Actually, the reason stories were so bare in the classics were to allow international marketing to vary the story and mythology behind the games (see Eggman to Robotnik, Kintobor and the ROCC). Now that the American and European continuities have been discarded, there's little reason for Sonic not to have complex stories in-game.

It always felt to me that the games were developed with the Japanese manuals stories in mind, and then the western marketing just took what they saw in the game itself and just wrote their own story and stuff. Or, like, there were some small details that the western side was aware of, but not much and everything else still ended up vastly different even if it paralled the Japanese story to an extent.

Ok this is what I have for the basic summary of the fic
>Sonic characters relax in the hot spring, starts off with tails inviting everyone to relax at the hot springs. With some reluctance from sonic and knuckles inviting amy and rouge. The boys side is pretty rowdy while the girls side is more quiet and relaxed but also has some antics going on (such as blaze envying amy and rouge’s bust size). Some time passes by and vector decides that this trip is getting boring. He suggest that they sneak on the girls. This of course is reacted with disapproval. Vector still does it anyway as he wants to get of that nekkid rouge. Vector manages to find a hole to peek on them. Amy and rouge are trying to convince blaze to take of her towel and join them in the hot spring. She is very reluctant to do so but does it eventually. Vector makes a lewd comment about blaze. This causes silver to go mad and he uses his telekinesis to pick up vector and throw him against the wall. Since the wall is made of wood, it breaks revealing the girls to the boys. The girls so crazy and label silver as a pervert. He tries to explain himself but it’s too late. The girls try to attack the boys and they try to get the hell out of the hotsprings. This results in a lot property damage and everyone makes vector pay.

Hah, yeah the Boom design goes a bit overboard in my opinion. Sonic does not need to be overcomplicated, or you'll ruin his appeal. I have no problem with the Adventure designs though, they feel like a natural evolution of what was present before. I also think that it looks better in a 3D space than Classic Sonic. Though that's just me, I can see why others might think differently.
