Put a table/chair combo in each of their rooms and they'll usually sit at it to eat.
Make sure you don't have a tavern either, taverns are AIDS that ruin everything and provide no meaningful benefits.

They will always eat at the nicest dining hall they are allowed to eat at. So, dig out a large stone area, smooth and engrave both the floor and the walls, put a stone door at each entrance, then load the place up with stone tables, stone thrones, and maybe some statues and rare animals in metal cages. Your dwarves will always eat there. You can then designate that as a meeting area via zones and maybe set up a control room nearby where all your levers are.

Waiting for winter. I neglected to install a bridge in my waterfall, so now it's flooding the cavern layer it feeds into and threatens to spill into my fort, but I have to wait till it freezes over before I can construct anything to block the flow.

Also, discovering the elephant men move fucking slow in fort mode. Like half the speed of my dwarves, if not slower.

I like being able to have exotic pets I can use in my traps or as part of my meat or leather economy. Not just here but when I used to shitpost at Bay 12 Forums. Well duh, everyone knows elf sympathizers vote green party.

But seriously though, I would be more tolerant of the elves if they weren't so god damn useless. Every spring I haul all my trade goods to the market, hoping for giant tigers or something cool, and every spring the elves bring a pair of larks and a bucket of wooden crap, so I offer them a lump of charcoal and hope it'll offend them enough to trigger an invasion.
>>
>>153705185
If the elves bring me something worth trading for, I trade. If not, I kill them. If an animal I traded for dies of old age, the caravan dies whether they bring me something nice or not.
The diplomats die every time, though. One does not give Fath Spiraloil, the Rider of Rampages, Duchess of Relicwebs an ultimatum and get to go home.

I'd trade more with the elves if they had more goods that were worth trading for. Exotic animals are ok but everything else they have at the moment is garbage. Literally all I buy from them right now is fruits and occasional animals.

I miss when elves had cloth to sell. That was actually useful for supplying resources for a clothing industry.

As they are currently they're almost useless trading partners. The only other thing they're good for is trap fodder and fodder for military.

So a while back I cleared out a necromancer tower, took the slab, gathered up all the books, and then carried them to a volcano and threw them in.
I just stopped by the tower again on my way to kill a cyclops and I found the slab and every single book was back at the tower as though I had never taken them at all.
The slab even still has blood on it from the night creature I killed with it.
What the fuck is going on?

There used to be a bug where trying to remove an artifact from the site it was created at would result in it being removed from your inventory and respawning at the site. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be fixed. What you're experiencing sounds related, as books and necro slabs are considered artifacts.

Rolled up on a big bunch of bandits I vaguely recall hitting with a different character, this time I've got four axedorfs I'm getting used to trauma, so I tell them all to yield and drop their shit, some do, some try to act tough, when I run out of new people to bitch out I let loose the dorfs of war!

(it was gruesome, I've been buffing and gearing these four actively, 5 vs ~15 with me just sitting back to chuck bolts around was a slaughter, stay in school and don't become bandits, kids!)

>>153714764
Oh, I meant:

gui/gm-editor df.global.world.fires should give you the list and you can then hit ctrl+d I think to clear the entries (not sure if that's the default hotkey or my own, hit ? to check in gm-editor) and it will remove the fires.

You know what I hate most about rivers?
It's not that you can't just fast travel across them if you know how to swim, or the river is frozen, or you can fly, or you're fucking amphibious.
It's not that they spawn fucking everywhere and there's no way to disable them from generating.
It's not that you have to be miles away from them on either side in order to fast travel, meaning that crossing them manually involves loading dozens of cells before you can leave.
No, what I hate most about rivers, is that every single time you cross one, there's a flock of birds or a school of fish or some other worthless pack of wildlife, and by simply existing in your vicinity you get inundated with pages upon pages of SUMMARIZE THE CONFLICT IN WHICH A RAVEN ATTACKED A RAVEN and SUMMARIZE THE CONFLICT IN WHICH ATTACKED YOU.

I fucking hate rivers.

Pretty good.

Ettin attacked me and got his heads caved in by the first dwarf he met, before the militia even got to him.

Dragon attacked me and started an embark-wide forest fire. Every tree on the map burned to cinders. Which of course the elves blamed me for, so now I'm at war with the treehuggers.
>>
>>153717832
That trips a "wait, it doesn't work like that" flag: trees which catch on fire don't disappear generally, just the branches and leaves and shit, the trunk and whatnot remains. That being the part elves jerk off over, it seems that even if this could happen, it couldn't happen like that.
>>
>>153719675
Well, I don't know what to tell you, but the elves were cool with me before the dragon, but they aren't now. Got a diplomat complaining to me about my mistreatment of the trees, then we're at war. Perhaps all the collapses from the fire counted as felling the trees?

I don't really know.
>>

>>
>>153720125

OH I think I just figured it out. It was all the saplings that burned completely. They disappear from fire, unlike multi-tile trees.

So much like they blame you if a bronze colossus kills their merchants, it seems reasonable that they'd blame you if a dragon torched a bunch of saplings.

Put the cursor on a tile and run the script, it will set a fire on that tile, view an inventory and run it, poof everything burns, view an item, just that item burns.

Whenever dfhack catches up I'll have to rewrite several scripts to fix new structures and shit, I'll make sure firestarter works in fort mode too, the item/inventory part should work but the "I want a fire here" part is advmode only.

In my opinion, it's a good thing that the food and drink industries are the simplest ones in the game, as it's the first one new players learn and the first thing you do in every single fortress. It's still a little bit too effective though, and could definitely make room for more complexity on the higher end of things

>Make dwarves require cooked meals, and make cooking give seeds. Plants that are edible raw are still edible, but dwarves will avoid eating them unless forced to and it will give an unhappy thought, just like booze and water
>Make meals require unique ingredients. No lavish meals of finely minced plump helmetx4
>Reduce the yield of unfertilized plots and increase the yield of fertilized plots. A 3x3 plot should be fine early on, but it shouldn't feed your entire 120 dwarf fortress without at least some fertilizer
>Make variety in food and drink more important. Dwarves only get happy thoughts from eating something if they have a preference for it or if they haven't eaten it within recent memory.
>Buff alternate food sources, so there's actually a reason to get a fish or meat or beekeeping industry instead of relying on plump helmets, chicken eggs, turkey eggs and guineahen eggs. Mead should be the most valuable drink in the game

Has anyone tried to enslave a demon in adventure mode by reading its name in a vault and later retire both companions in an old fort of yours, to live there?
If my experiments are correct, you should have that demon living in your fortress, being able to write books or serve in your tabern, and eventually he'd petition to be a member of your civ

Bili, my name is Urist-fiya.

I’m a 27 year old Dwarven Thitathi (Elf fan for you wanaras). I engrave trees and flowers on my smooth walls, and spend my days perfecting my art and playing on superior Elven string instruments. (Ici, Ova, Athi)

I train with my wooden sword every day, this superior weapon can cut clean through grass because it underwent photosynthesis over a thousand times before I picked it from the tree, and is vastly superior to any other weapon on earth. I earned my sword license two years ago, and I have been getting better every day.

I speak Elvish fluently, both ÿora and the Amalaefeye dialect, and I write fluently as well. I know everything about Elven history and their Esefatha code, which I follow 100%

When I get my Elven visa, I am moving to Cacameinire to attend a prestigious High School to learn more about their magnificent culture. I hope I can become an acolyte for the queen or a shaping tree operator!

I own several grown fiber robes, which I wear around the fortress. I want to get used to wearing them before I move to the forest retreat, so I can fit in easier. I bow to my elders and seniors and speak Elvish as often as I can, but rarely does anyone manage to respond.

Wish me luck in the forest retreat!

I found a real-life dwarf fortress
http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/09/bizarre-ant-colony-discovered-in-an-abandoned-polish-nuclear-weapons-bunker/

>The wood-ant ‘colony’ described here – although superficially looking like a functioning colony with workers teeming on the surface of the mound – is rather an example of survival of a large amount of workers trapped within a hostile environment in total darkness, with constantly low temperatures and no ample supply of food. The continued survival of the ‘colony’ through the years is dependent on new workers falling in through the ventilation pipe. The supplement of workers more than compensates for the mortality rate of workers such that through the years the bunker workforce has grown to the level of big, mature natural colonies.

Ant-fort when?

make the wall higher than one level

Not him, but I see a problem here.

Vamps all use false identities in fort mode. In order to find the vamp in the image creator, I'm pretty sure that you need the "true" name used by the hist fig, as opposed to the false name you see in-game.

I might be wrong, of course.

Actually not. If you type his name , image creator will show vampire true name instead and will describe him as vampire. However it could be bug and be fixed at some point.

>>
>>153770530
You can see it in adventurer mode, tavern keepers stop serving drinks for exactly two things: death and sleep, as in they won't serve a dead or sleeping patron a drink, and they won't serve drinks while dead or asleep.

If you pass out, barf for an hour, and manage to come out of a coma, they'll happily pass you another mug.

It was kind of annoying when I was first trying to collect dance forms and whatnot since spontaneous dances aren't as common as stories and poetry, so I'd set myself up with a bunch of crap in my backpack until I was moving at 0.099 speed and then just hold down right/left up against a wall so I kept bashing into it repeatedly to zoom time forwards faster.

Pretty soon half the bar is dead.

>>
>>153770530
As long as the dwarves are in the tavern, the tavern keeper will continue serving them drinks, whatever their activity is, which leads to idle dwarves and visitors dying of alcohol poisoning. That isn't the same as dwarves stopping work to drink, which they do with the same frequency as they always have. The purple uninterruptable needs-maintenance jobs don't last long enough for a dwarf to drink himself to death. Busy dwarves won't be in the tavern often enough for it to be a concern at all, as the green jobs are just things they do when idle. If you keep your dwarves busy you'll almost never see one of your citizens die of alcohol poisoning.
Alternatively, just don't have a tavern keeper. Dwarves can get their own drinks just fine when they're thirsty.

It was sheer luck that the one he picked was where another miner was stranded in a previous cancellation-related climbing incident.

Well, standing on a lava flow SEEMS to be survivable because unlike items which are destroyed instantly, living creatures are able to, uh... swim above them, as magma crabs do, so the game gives a bit of wiggle-room there?

I've knocked people into the open pits in the troll rooms under dark fortresses before and had them make a multiple-cavern layer 3 point shot down to where water was draining onto a magma flow before, and I remember being baffled at them just chilling out on the flow.

At first I assumed it was because of the water landing on them, but they ended up dying when they got too far from where they were standing.

I assume if I hang out down there on a flow long enough I'll die, hell, I guess I'll go ahead and test that real quick.

Incidentally here's some of the scaffold I was making, dropping an ice floor into magma with a structure in place clears the tile right above the structure briefly, dropping an ice wall the same way would produce a block of obsidian, so I use the walls where there is open space above a magma flow to clear those tiles (teleporting the magma up above where it fell from) and the floors to put walls on top of existing structures for expansion/cleaning up layouts.

I dropped on the same tile I landed on at first, was able to keep dropping water on the lava flow and hang out for a while without getting hurt but then it all burst into steam and I started melting, so I swam around to see what I could do.

I couldn't climb up out of the lava into the structure I had built, but you can see the smoke from where I was burning underneath it, so I went over to walls at the edge of the volcano and climbed out that way, went down into the structure, then climbed back up the stairs and decided to see if I could put myself out with water dropping, but apparently my blood puddle+water=block of ice so I killed the process and went back to building.

>>153789514
Eh, it's annoying in the sense that you've gotta track that shit now, but it's nice having that new factor to combat, and ends up being a difficulty boost which is something various anons and posters on bay12 seem to think would be nice.

Plus the 64 bit release is a big step towards a lot of shit, it's already faster in situations where the 32 bit version was lagging, just from my own testing I noticed it in world-gen, where 64 bit worlds ran to the same target year (300 in my case) completed a minute and a half or so earlier while having a couple thousand higher population totals, and running the same world gens for a set time period (I forget how many minutes I did it, 3 or 5 or something?) resulted in the 64 bit gaining a couple of years (like 184 vs 186?) with the same 2k or so higher population count.

Means it will help stretch out shit where your old favorite fort was running slower, giving more breathing room before you hit the same point where you can't keep going.

Are you able to make a QSP with a bunch of bins like finished FINISHED goods?

The trick is to always use a bright contrasting stone block for workshops. Microcline, cobaltite, serpentine, olivine, cinnabar and orthoclase are your friends here. If you somehow have none of these, then you can always use DFHack to change some rock blocks to them. It's not like the change will be anything more than cosmetic anyway. As far as I'm aware none of those stones are magma safe or worth more than other less colorful stones.

I see 29 cobaltite. Rock blocks turn one boulder into four blocks. Just tell your masons to make ~20 cobaltite blocks and you should have plenty for all your workshops.

The old fort they came from was certainly a lot rougher.

Not only were there constant hordes of a hundred or more elf or goblin armies that would promptly be knocked to pieces by mace, axe, bolt and fist (ironically mostly fist because I trained everybody as wrestlers for at least a year before giving them weapons), but there was constant turmoil in the fort with dwarves getting really upset over trivial reasons. It was cramped, crowded, and despite being enormously wealthy there was a dwarf beaten to death every couple weeks or so either by a tantruming dwarf upset that they didn't get their favorite food for a few years or said tantrummer getting their neck punched into ground beef and suffocating on the floor after the fortress guard came to punish them for disturbing the peace.

I would have wondered why they'd leave that fort but looking back despite it having a huge tavern full of visitors from all over the place, an unbeatable militia covered in steel, temples for every god and a grand library filled with the knowledge of the world, rooms for all dwarves and unceasing floods of food and drink, it was honestly a huge shit hole.
>>
>>153817246
Good luck, I feel like the new damage system will see them killed after about 15 dead goblins

Also what the fuck have you done to get sieged? And is there a way to get attacked within the first year?
I lowered the siege population requirement under goblin entity, so far nothing has changed.
>>
>>153818327

n-never mind, a few of them fell into the river fighting a random visiting crossbowman and drowned sending half of them sprinting off the map like pussies, then some more got shredded by a couple of traps and the rest of them sprinted off too. You know, Toady has talked about more complex relations menus, both in fort and adv. mode, where your short and long term opinions and thoughts on each person you know are represented.
In my perfect DF version, Hardcore experiences like this should really impact the opinion you have about somebody, and more than possibly give you traumas and mental problems

Making your military dwarf also a woodcutter will lead to problems down the line if you intend them to ever resume their civilian labor, or go off duty at all. Skilling woodcutter at embark is kind of a waste of points anyway, the difference in skill only saves you a little time and has no other effect on the outcome.

Spending points on trading skills is a waste as well, as your broker will get free xp when he enters the trade screen for the first time each season.

Cook and brewer can be important early on. Herbalist too if you plan on using fruit trees or other gathered plants. Having some smithing skills at embark is nice if you plan to start metalworking early, and gives you smith-eligible dwarves for moods. Architecture is a stupidly slow-to-train skill that has good value and time returns at higher levels, and isn't moodable unlike most other quality-creating skills. Gem setting can be slow to train as well, and skill level has a massive impact on the value of the final products. A second military dwarf to start training at the same time as your captain will speed up their progress considerably. Someone will probably tell you to bring a doctor, but you shouldn't.

I used to think so but I don't like having to guess value at the first caravan.

>Skilling woodcutter at embark is kind of a waste of points anyway, the difference in skill only saves you a little time and has no other effect on the outcome

Duly noted.

>Cook and brewer can be important early on

The farmer has points in both of these for when planting is done.
The miners also have some points. 1 miner has cook, the other has brewer. Just to give the farmer some backup and to give the miners stuff to do when there's no mining to be done.

The rest of the stuff I'll think about as I set up the initial items.
Thoughts on that?
Got some picks, an axe, 105 items of food, 105 items of booze, seeds (plump helmet, pig tail and sweet pod seeds were the ones i selected), some extra barrels, some rope, bags, some cloth and leather in case some asshole gets a mood before I can acquire stuff from caravans.

>I don't like having to guess value at the first caravan.
You don't have to. A completely unskilled dwarf who goes to trade gains enough appraisal to go up several skill levels instantly. Just make sure the dwarf you send is your broker. Any appraisal skill at all is sufficient, even dabbling, but the dwarf that goes to trade will be competent or adequate (I forget) just from being the first one to enter the trade screen. Skill level in appraisal doesn't affect the results of trading, it's entirely useless past literally 1 xp. Nevertheless, your broker will be a legendary appraiser in under 10 years just from the free xp gained by entering the trade screen.

The wiki says waves don't have flow, but if I channel a trench will the waves fill it up?
>>
How do you guys do your embarks? Do you excavate by mining z-level to see if your embark has decent stuff?
>>
>>153884118
No. The waves aren't water, don't carry water, won't make things wet, and won't fill spaces or be blocked by obstacles. The only thing they do that's like water is moving objects (but not creatures) that they pass over.

> suggesting tapping the ocean without putting in a depressurizer
tl;dr just read the fucking wiki
water pressure operates under north/south/east/west and up/down pathing that acts like a teleporter for water.

if a full block of water is resting on top of several other full blocks of water, ALL of the water on top of the lowest block will attempt to "teleport" to the nearest free space on that lowest level.
you can literally drain the ocean instantly the moment you open it up. the dwarf doing the digging will probably die horribly.

to prevent this pressurized water, simply make sure there's a forced diagonal movement in the corridor, as it would appear on your screen:
######
346###
###77< water flows in here
######

the same diagram in the pressurized state:
######
777###
##777< water flows in here
######

The first diagram the water can't "walk" through the diagonal passage, but in the second diagram it can the north/south direction in the middle... and thus teleport all attached water directly to open space, killing everyone in the fortress who's below sea-level.
>>
>>153828882
>that one bartender that makes last call 1:30
>>
>>153889503
In the diagram he drew the water doesn't need depressurizing, and depressurizing it anywhere would cause the scheme to fail. The pressure is the only thing allowing the water to rise through grate.
>>
>>153889503
>and thus teleport all attached water directly to open space
That's not how it works. Not even close. Maybe you should practice with water some instead of misinterpreting the wiki at new players.

Take lots of screenshots, you'll be glad later when you can laugh at silly shit you did.

Hit esc and go down to key binding, general is the parts of the interface that mostly apply all over like cursor movement and stuff like enter/confirm type stuff, dwarf mode is fortress stuff, adventure is of course the single player keybinds, then there are the world parts which only matter after you've already learned enough about how to play to know what you want from a world and advanced world-gen, then the embark keybinds, zones and constructions, and something else.

You can change them all, and they'll generally be listed over in the pane on the right side of the screen, you can hit tab to bring it up/hide the minimap/shrink the side pane/go back to it being hidden too.

Remember farm > still for drinks instead of trying to rely on water, plant gathering is super handy there too, lots of drinkable plants on the surface, but for me at least and several others it tends to be common for early forts to fall due to a simple lack of booze.

Also this.

Oh, and though you'll see them used differently in other games, and often used incorrectly here, there are specific terms in place in df. The big crisp text from that icon guide was this //tileset// which goes in df/data/art and you tell the game to use it by editing the relevant lines in df/data/init/init.txt from the [FONT:curses_640x300.png] to [FONT:VorpalCursesClassic.png] in this case, and the same for the FULLFONT/GRAPHICS_FONT/GRAPHICS_FULLFONT lines if you wish to set [GRAPHICS:YES] or not and use fullscreen or not, accordingly.

Graphics sets change how the animals and dorfs and whatnot are displayed, and go under df/raw/graphics with a copy in worlds generated with that set of raws, found under df/data/save/region*/raw/graphics where * ~ 1, 2, ..., 8, 9, etc.

More advanced graphics requires the use of dfhack and a plugin called text will be text, or twbt for short, which allows other displayed tiles to use overrides so a sword has a sword icon and a hammer is a hammer instead of both being a / tile.

How are the neighbors?

Shallow metal/Deep Metal means you're probably gonna be stuck with copper and silver or something, without a flux layer you can't make steel, and without shallow/deep metals the odds of getting hematite/limonite/magnetite ore to make iron is low.

If you're playing on a 1366x768 screen this is actually the right size, and is fairly close to the vanilla aesthetics while tossing in some stuff to pretty up the ground and engraved walls/floors. I thought I had one with the straight walls sitting around somewhere but I'd have to dig up the .xcf if it is wanted I think.

What size world did you go with btw? The option at the bottom where it said Legends, that is a treasure trove of info, but even if you don't know what to look for in there, before starting a fort it is nice to open up legends mode and ex[p]ort the populations/maps, you also get that option when world-gen ends but it is more up-to-date in legends mode.

It can give you a better idea of what the demographics look like, let you poke around at other civs and such if you're curious, but once you start a fort you need to retire or abandon it to pull up legends again (though you could copy the save and do it on THAT copy if you were interested enough) so it's kinda like a scoreboard of what went on around your fort while you were playing?

When you're making a stockpile there should be two sets of upper and lowercase letters, I think it's cC and vV for bins and barrels?

If you set the limit all the way down to 0 for both it will keep them out of that pile.

If you set a custom stockpile (under the edit pile options besides the food/armor/furniture/refuse choices, you can go for custom too) you can control exactly what you want for those types and it should stay when you paint them until you adjust the accepted stuff again.

Strength unquestionably has an impact. It increases the size of their muscle tissue layer, increasing their overall size and meaning they have an increased damage capacity.

So for example a max starting str (2x average) adventurer who then trains to the max (2x starting amount) has 4x the muscle mass and if he is of perfectly average size (60000 for dorf) he would presumably be size 94000 or so.

>its better to say that virtually all socialist parties in western countries are chin deep in identity politics
Western socialism hasn't been a thing since -68. "Socialists" in Europe and USA has since bought into the neo-liberal concept of marketing people as individual "brands". This is made manifest in modern identity politics. Actual socialism has been forced out into the fringes of the modern day politics: identity politic supporters even tend to brand the few remaining socialists as "orthodox marxists", simply because socialism values the bigger picture above some mere middle class decadence. It's pretty common for supporters of identity politics to argue that class doesn't even exist.

Yeah, doesn't seem too complicated: do you think public ownership of certain classes/types/categories of things/stuff/means/structures is preferable to private ownership of said things? Bam, you're a socialist.

I'm more confused on what identity politics actually means, I see it pop up but I'm not willing to go down what sounds like a shit-filled rabbit hole to find out.
>>
>>153927480

Tend to agree. Likewise, go too far in the other direction and you could be classified as something along the lines of a libertarian, minarchist or the dreaded arachno-crapitalist.

Identity politics is just what it sounds like, divide and conquer via getting proles to think of life in a purely tribalistic, us vs them mentality.

>If they identify
Personal identity is irrelevant, and if anything, a product of identity politics.

>fit the dictionary definition of socialists
I wouln't say most of them do. The majority seem to be in full support of a relatively free market(albeit with a few regulations), and value the freedom of the middle class to express it's individuality above the physical well-being of the lower classes. This is why the modern day left is largely disinterested in whether cab drivers lose their jobs because of Uber drivers, but lose their shit because there aren't enough "non-binary" toilets in the public schools.

On the political spectrum, the "Radical Left" of today actually stands where the moderate social democrats stood a few decades ago. There simply isn't any real socialist alternative in politics anyome, and as a result, more people are becoming reactionary.

Pic related, the big pretty black and yellow orb weaver or writing spider from our porch who fell and popped her abdomen open last week, sadly. Yeah, I've left her last web up so I can show how I worked out a method to transfer them, and to demonstrate the shit that an unmaintained web catches.

Basically though, big rake used to suspend the center of the web across the tines so it remains taut and the spider doesn't freak out, then you can move them if they were in front of a walkway or whatnot, then simply putting the rake near a better area and letting them move off, poking them so they scurry off onto the grass, or my preference: getting them to scoot off the rake so I can pick them up cause they're awesome.

Gotta be careful though so they don't fall, Valkyrie there was working on her gutter extension she had been putting out to lead runoff away from the web and ended up falling for some reason while crossing over from as far up as she could. T.T

Thanks, it sucked but yeah, they die each year anyways from the frost. I was still looking forward to her killing bugs and shit and leaving eggs for next year like we did last year.

Got the missus comfortable enough that she was wanting to handle her next time I needed to move her (sometimes she would set up between the wrong columns on the porch) and we're gonna grab a Euathalus Sp. Orange or Red for our first tarantula since she wants one after seeing how friendly they are on youtube.

We've been amused by the little spitting spiders lurking up in the corner of the room and how they head back to snuggle up in a little clump when we wake up and turn the lights on. Figure it's the least we can do after killing many due to their superficial resemblance to brown recluses which we get now and then too.

Though, leaving spitters around helps control those, since they hunt them down for us, rock on little snugglespiderbros!

Definitely way more scared of df spiders than real life ones.

But careful of closing the game without saving, ESPECIALLY DURING SAVES. If you corrupt your fort's save from the world save, then you could get the dreaded Fatal Nemesis Error crash. Your best bet is to have uncompressed saves and backup saving. Make sure you have set those settings.
>>
>>153935901
Also you can make autosaving more frequent if you have a fast computer or time to spare.
>>
>>153935901
>>153936204
Also if your game crashes, make sure to check if the saves weren't modified at the same time. If they were, load a backup. Lost my last fort because I forgot to enable backups and knew my save was corrupted. Even if the game runs, it will eventually crash later due to a corrupt historical figure coming to visit your fort.

Has anyone read the horror comic "Tomie" by Junji Ito. Its about this girl that men will fall madly in love with, only for her to eventually reject them leading to them killing themselves, or killing her and cutting her up into little pieces. The interesting thing being, each piece that is cut will eventually grow into a whole new Tomie, who will think she is the original and order the men under her control to kill all the other Tomies, which will be burnt to prevent regeneration. But the Tomies that survive will eventually be killed and chopped up into little pieces, which grow more Tomies, ect. And so the cycle continues ad infinitum.

The reason I'm bringing this up is that as Dwarf Fortress evolves and more stuff can be done with it, I would be very interested in the concept of combating such a creature. Do you think that when 1.0 rolls around in the distant future, the framework would be in place to create something so complex?

I've read it, but it sounds a bit too specific to be added into DF as a mechanic. Maybe the myth release will make certain supernatural creatures multiply when they lose body parts, but the romance system is far too simple at the moment. As it currently is, all love involves two people, and is always two-sided. Both parties always fall in love at the same time, and after that, they're both "taken" for the rest of their lives. While this is definitly a place holder mechanic(like most mechanics), it will probably remain in the game for quite some time.
>>
>>153959090
Well I assume it'd be like a mod or something. I don't expect Toady to add it in, I was just wondering if it could be done at all.

jk, it's just to dark for me, although most of his ideas are very interesting

All in all, I expect 1.0 to be a fair simulation of real life, with all the technical limits we can have.
But being realist, that particular mechanic doesn't sound that hard to implement
In fact, I remember that the ability of were-creatures to regenerate itself gave birth to an interesting 'feature' were a freshly bissected adventurer would transform and regenerate two different creatures, as both of them were roughly the 'main' part to be regenerated

I didn't check to see if it could, I was still too new, only had the candy due to learning about the thing where you can make the levels above layer 4 something like 60+ and get solid spires extending up into the caverns.

I assigned it to one of my militia captains and then saw her bashing a goblin with her shield, figured out she wasn't large enough to use the maul, then learned how useless candy is for that, oh and it was also my first planepacked success, to really rub it in.

>Having to play inferior older versions without the most recent bugfixes and worldgen additions in order to use dfhack and therapist

I'm feeling very conflicted. I've deleted my DF folder because I kept getting a wierd "FATAL ERROR" for some reason. Now I'm unsure whether I want to just get the stupid old version of the game to get therapist and dfhack to work, but at the same time I just want to get the most recent version and play like a pro without them..

The bugs in the later versions of the game that therapist/dfhack dont support are pretty juicy..

WAT DO?

Like, seriously. Does dfhack for 43.03 fix any of the shit that 43.04 ?

removing armor from wounded opponents seems pretty big.

allowing dwarves to survive better in worldgen seems pretty big

joint damage based on the momentum of incoming attacks is pretty big

visitors and npc warriors in adventure mode that actually fucking wear armor is pretty big.

Why the fuck wont the DFhack and Therapist fuckers just update to the most recent version? They've already made working versions for the 64bit mode but still haven't forwarded that to the most recent version. I dont know how i'm gonna live when it takes these mod devs longer to update their mod than it takes for the game itself to update.

I'm super paranoid about finding the perfect region for my dorfs though. for the past few months i've been playing these newer versions I've been stuck without therapist and dfhack and its stupid as balls when I spend an hour finding capable dwarves to put in my military and making sure none of the women get put into it when in therapist it would take 30 seconds.

its also super annoying when I cant find iron ores before embark or being unable to use the twbt mod when I happen to find what I need, but in very hilly forts.

Newb here. Just spent a good few hours on my first fort, and I have significant sentimental attachment to it.

however, i just discovered using DFHack that there are approximately 2 tiles of iron ore in the entire map, plus or minus 30% uncertainty.

Should I just re-embark? is there a fun way to trash my fort before I leave?

>>154023396
reveal > find a chunk or two of crappy ore veins > changevein limonite > do that in a couple of spots and then put the cursor in your fort and hit revflood, it will fix the reveal and any issues that may arise from it.

It's less satisfying than scraping your way up the hard way at times but sometimes you also end up with a case where a great site has awkward vein layout or just crap veins in general.

I do suggest hitting 3dveins before actually digging in anywhere, they're much nicer looking, but yeah if you're attached to the fort already then you could get some more fun out of it by hacking in a bit of useful ore veins rather than just dumping tons of steel bars on the ground or something.

Would you like negative levels of abilities, /dfg/?
Like we already have 'negative' levels of atributes, negative, or learning level people would usually fail at building something, wasting the materials, or create them, but with very bad quality(ex: chairs breaking after sitting)
>>
>>154045620
>fail at building something, wasting the materials, or create them
Sounds unfun.
>but with very bad quality(ex: chairs breaking after sitting)
Sounds fun.
>>
>>154045620
As you said, we already have negative levels of abilities, penalties and so on.
And really, whether you have 0 1 2, or -1 0 +1 doesn't make any difference as long as the rest of the game is balanced accordingly.

Now, things like wasting resources is interesting, but I can imagine a lot of players wouldn't like that too much (though I think it's fair game - if you don't want to lose resources, only let your experienced guys do the work).

The only real consequential change would be items breaking.

It's another source of possible FPS reduction (all that broken items cluttering up memory, calculating whether something breaks or not, etc), but in the long run I think it's gonna be part of the game.
And with it similar mechanics: cave-in physics, wear on weapons and armor (already made it in), digging invaders, destructible constructions, and so on.
>>
>>154046483
The main reason to do this, I think, Is that the way we obtain qualified workers in their respective fields is a little overpowered atm. In a moderately realistic world, not everyone has the same abilities to become a smith, or a bowyer.
this is fragmentally represented by atributes, meaning that any dwarf can craft any object, only taking different times to do so, but in real life, being able to craft a sword takes ability, risks(if you are a newb), knowledge and ability
Of those 4, only ability is fairly represented, using a formidable level system, but an experienceless smithcould lightly burn himself if he isn't careful, or could build a blunt sword by accident, or would need to learn more than a carpenter to work properly (negative levels and an apprentice/teacher relationships), and should come tired to home after a rough day in the forge
>Many players won't like that, and would consider it unfun

This is more of a personal thing, but I consider moderate challenges and added minor difficulties pretty fun, as they don't become unbearable, ofcourse

Sounds good to me. In addition, I wouldn't mind if the upper end of the experience level is bound to a favorable personality/attributes. I.e. almost everybody can become an experienced metalworker, but only people with enough creativity or willpower or whatever can become legendary. Except with moods, of course.

And a very small part is just not cut out to become anything but moderately skilled. The retards, basically.

With that however, comes a question of game design/taste.

Do you want to omit that from the player, and largely leave it outside of his control, or do you want him to know about their personalities? In the latter case, I think an improved interface to screen your population for favorable traits would be necessary.
At that point, if you're not careful you have a situation where the player just chooses the best option without conflict (for example only one talented dwarf for two important jobs)
And if there's no conflict, the game might as well auto assign labors based on personality, and then you might as well remove the mechanic entirely.

In the end, I think these things shouldn't have too much of an impact. They should be there to enrich the flavor and variance of DF as a storytelling generator, and they should give experienced players a means to increase the efficiency of their well greased mass production machine. But messing with it should not be necessary for the average player.
I guess that is a good guideline for most features in DF in general.

Your question doesn't have enough details about what you intend to do to give you an answer. You should probably just wiki and/or experiment until you figure out how to do whatever you're trying to do. Start with http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Water and follow many links.
>>
>>154053853
It's not possible to mod the game in such a way as to make that story possible, for a variety of reasons. The post responded to is correct, but didn't touch the most obvious of them.

Is the double slit method the fastest for getting through aquifers?
>>
>>154060095
Yeah. Vulnerable to building destroyers, though. Pretty dangerous when they're the only thing keeping your fort from becoming a reservoir.
>>
>>154061554
Depends on the aquifer. For a shallow aquifer the cave-in or chicken run methods can be faster. Double slit is still the best game in town for deep aquifers. Unfortunately it's hard to know what your aquifer is like until you start poking holes in it.

>New-ish to the game
>Want to build a giant forth this time around instead of my usual small fort that fails upon first invasion due to poor planning
>Send first team to dig it all out
>Dig deep and greedily right at the start, huge halway that spans several layers with a depot set up for easy and secure trading
>Massive rooms for all of my crafters and storage
>Big dinning hall
>Figure I'll carve out rooms when it matters
>Abandon then reclaim
>Initial 7 dwarves take literally years to move from surface to the first habitable layer of the fortress

Fuck

Is it supposed to be like this at the start?

Were they spending all that time just hauling goods to stockpiles?
>>
>>154072581
Yes
>>
>>154072773
There is your mistake. Settle the vacant hulk you carved in stages. First reclaim the bedrooms, kitchens, and food stockpiles, and get that sorted. The idea is to work towards expanding through the pre-carved fort while simultaneously maintaining a stable environment for the settlers. Every wave of immigrants brings more labor.
>>
>>154072198
Why did you abandon and reclaim in the first place?

I have a dwarf who won't calm the fuck down.

He's perpetually unhappy despite my attempts to make luxurious dwellings for all the dwarves, and every time he tantrums he punches somebody's head off.

He hasn't gotten anybody I care about yet but it's only a matter of time. He's killed like six people.
>>
>>154075868
You have a psychopath! Congratulations.
I recommend administering dwarven therapy through the functional head of a silver hammer.

What does his personal page say about his thoughts and personality? Screencap and post.
>>
>>154075001
It takes a lot less time to start with 7 miners and just go at it right from the start, since you don't have to worry about saving points for necessities.

Just 7 miners, 7 picks, some food and a whole lot of fun.

Typically a grazer value is provided somewhere on the wiki page for an animal. Only grazers need to eat currently, and they graze, Most omnivores and carnivores can be locked in a box for a decade and be fine.

Well, it's doable without the volcano tube glitch, but you gotta be able to swim in magma or deal with random jerkasses bumping into you while you build the top layers of entryway.

I swam down into a volcano and up through a nearby magma pool to gather lumber and build from inside the caverns so I don't get interrupted all the time, and now have a safe stairway down through the magma using planned dropping of ice floors to clear working space repeatedly.
>>
>>154081162
>swim in magma

that's a pretty big physics mistake by toady
magma is dense as rock so you should just float on top unless you're like a lead man or something
>>
>>154081258
Buoyancy isn't simulated yet. But anyway he didn't say he fell through magma, he swam. As in propelling oneself through a fluid. Buoyancy is certainly a factor in how difficult such propulsion would be, but one doesn't have to sink in order to swim. Nevermind that creatures do sink in magma as easily was water...

What are the pros of making a 5 yo world?
I mean, if I'll play the game in fortress mode, will the world continue to grow, write its history, will civilization continue to grow or not?
>>
>>154086486
If world activation works as it should, then yes. I've seen sites get founded during adv mode play.

However, I still suspect that the different logic that post-worldgen events use make them more contingent and unstable than the events that occur in worldgen. It's very likely that all worlds begin to slowly fall apart as soon as worldgen ends.

Toady at one point said that magic will be able to fuck up the world/terrain right?
>high magic world
>gods walk the earth and fuck each other up
>they shape the landscape with every battle
>civilizations with magic war with the others
>magic use creates gashes and craters in the land at battle sites
>biomes start getting drastically changed, whether from being frozen in a magical ice, scorched to the stone by flame, nature magic causing unchecked overgrowth, etc
>volcanos get rekt and streams of magma start forming across the world
>at particularly nasty battle sites, the planet core is breached
>demons everywhere
>demons pose a challenge to the wizards
>gods are mildly annoyed by demons, but smite them easily
>send out military squads to help your civilizations war effort against gods, wizards, and the endless demon hordes
>they all die
>caravans stop coming
>migrants stop coming
>tfw your fort becomes the last bastion of your race
>tfw something will eventually come to your doorstep
>tfw an unseen force casts a spell and a sinkhole demolishes half the fort and opens paths that bypass all defenses
>tfw last few survivors hole up in the caverns as the ground trembles with the screams of those left behind echoing through the tunnels
The systems probably won't be that epic, but I can dream.

You need to turn on an option to collect refuse from outside. Alternatively try linking the workshop and the stockpile.

Just trade for iron shit and make sure you prioritize that in your trade demands. You can get a fair amount of iron from melting down anvils and whatever garbo iron items they send for trade. You should be churning out enough crafts that you can easily afford them.

Wish sword dwarves would go after the neck on a downed opponent rather than the head. Head makes sense for blunt/pierce weapons but for slashing weapon opening up arteries is a better option - or at least a more consistent option.

Perfect. seems kinda weird though - you would expect it would be easier to haul shit down stairs rather than up, or take ramps rather than stairs. that kinda thing.

would be kinda cool if we could set up forts to be easy to defend using steep vertical stairs and maybe even spiral staircases designed to favour swordsmen attacking from the top like they had in old castles n shit

maybe for v100
