Op pic is kinda nice. I've experimented a bit with creating maps in GIMP, using the exported detailed maps, but I've always gotten stuck at placing the civ borders.

Also, having a separate mastershit thread is genius move.

Werebeasts are fucking annoying. It's even worse when they kill a bunch of people and then morph back and get away with it because no one chases them down and kills them.

>>
>>153283648
Werebeasts are no threat as long as you know what you're doing. Even if worst comes to worst, you can still use profession nicknames to keep track of everyone who got bitten.

Whether the beast gets away has very little impact, since most worlds have so many of them that you never kill off all of them in a single fort.
>>
>>153285403
It doesn't matter how much you know what you're doing when they decide to attack early in the first year. Unless you embark with weapons and armor and abuse danger rooms you're not going to have a military that can handle one yet.

>>

They weren't nearly as dangerous before gaits were introduced in 0.40. In 0.34, any mid-game adventurer could easily kill off a bogey wave without sneaking(which wasn't nearly as OP as in 0.40 and forward).
>>
>>153294035
>>153295138
>>153295443
They're a lot easier when you charge them to knock them down. Their speed is reduced when they're on the ground so you can land hits more reliably.
>>
>>153291283
Hell I can't even remember what the outcome of that one was, I remember one of them which was a hilarious wipe that took place after I had taken sleeping pills when another ls got claim but were unable to prevent rage, and I remember flailing everyone and getting murdered for it a few times.
>>
>>153295894
Yeah but there's still like 8 million of them and they usually just jump away from your charges unless you're a vampire
>>
>>153296346
Note I took the pills to actually sleep, not like "well fuck, they got claim, time for suicide!" which is how it looks without context and I just spit on my screen from laughing over that.
>>
>>153296357
There's like 4-5 and if you're letting yourself get surrounded you deserve to lose. They are quite fast, you're right, but they're never impossible to hit. Obviously if you're playing a weak adventurer you should just avoid them, but you don't need to be hueg in order to stand a chance.
>>
>>153296729
They spawn surrounding you though, and if you get out of their circle they teleport to you. The only way to keep out of that circle is to be a vampire or necromancer so you can stay on sprint without getting tired.
>>
>>153295443
A mid-game adventurer can still kill off a bogey wave. I was exaggerating to poke fun at the anon from last not-prematurely-dead thread insisting that bogeys were the hardest creatures in the game.
>>

Except hydras, webbing titans/fbs, inorganic dust/deadly syndrome titans, ettins, and night trolls. All of which are more of a threat than a horde of bogeymen, the problem with bogeymen being people trying to outrun them. I learned quickly in my first adventures to keep my speed down, use short waits to let them get close, pingpong them off a tree and dodge away.
>>
>>153299096
>use the multiattack->dodge exploit
Might as well just use DFHack to give yourself masterwork adamantine gear, legendary+5 in all skills and 10000 in all attributes
>>
>>153298536
Night trolls, any demons, angels, titans, or fbs that aren't made of soft materials, any armed and armored weaponmaster sentient, any creature that's been husked or thralled, and every megabeast are all harder to kill and more dangerous than bogeys.
>>
>>153299192
>night trolls
Only a threat if your wrestling skill is shit.
They'll murder you in an instant if you're a newbie adventurer, but once you do some combat training they're a little disappointing.
I'd say they're probably slightly more dangerous than an individual bogeyman, and significantly less dangerous than a full pack of bogeymen.
>>
>>153299447
>any armed and armored weaponmaster sentient
>wrestling

Humanoid angels are the exact same thing as bogeymen except armed and armored, with weaker stats, smaller groups and the potential to made of shit like water or whatever. They're the exact same size range as bogeymen and have lower stats, so unless RNG decides to fuck you with angels made of steel or whatever then they are literally just weaker bogeymen who also have weapons.

>exact same size range
No. Bogeys are always under 20k size, humanoid angels are often much larger than dwarves.
>smaller groups
No. Have you ever attacked a vault?
>armed and armored
Makes an enormous difference, especially considering that they're armed and armored with divine metal.

As for the weaponmasters, they have very high defensive combat skills as well. Their combat rolls follow the same rules as a player character's. You can't just walk up and grab their gear or start pulping their body parts any more than a random goblin could do it to you. Unless you use kisat dur exploits, but that's obviously not what this conversation is about.

Guys, I've noticed plenty RimWorld players play also Dwarf Fortress, and vice-versa. Since both generals are slow, and the games are in the same genre, would you mind merging both?

I mean personally I'm not opposed to merging the generals just because I don't like RimWorld. I was fine with Terraria/Starbound general even though I'm not a fan of Starbound.
It's just that usually when you merge generals one of them just takes over and the other one dies out.
>>
>>153299221
>>153300932
I see no evidence to think its an exploit. It comes at the cost of the unlimited fucking dodges of .34.xx.

It doesn't even make you unhittable or whatever, at a minimum night trolls, angels and of course bogeymen can still hit you while you're dodging away.
>>
>>153300070
"Bogeymen are hard" is a meme left over from .34, in which essentially anything can fuck you up with a good hit. In .34, you can be size 110000 and have a limb be rendered permanently nonfunctional by a fucking ordinary crab clipping you in the leg.

I see angels larger than dwarf size all the time, but there are no bogeymen of dwarf size or above.
>>
>>153306385
Sounds retarded. It would accomplish nothing other than confusing newbies and as a way to funnel more shekels into Rim... oh! I get it now.
>>
>>153307626

It's not strictly shitty, though it's also no the most efficient possible layout. It's efficient enough for most forts. I personally don't stockpile a lot of those raw materials, dye and thread for example, as I feel it just makes extra jobs when your worker could take them right from the shop. You may feel differently, and that's fine too. I also think high-efficiency layouts are boring after you've done it a few times, but if you haven't it's worth doing just to get a feel for workflows and production chains, and learn how to avoid (or intentionally create) bottlenecks.

After that, one should always dig one layer at a time, and make sure to separate the different levels from each other using hatch covers. By locking these hatches in case of emergency, you'll stop the demon hordes; even demons can't break a locked hatch cover from below.

I just had a dwarf see some crundle corpses in my corpse stockpile and get overwhelmed with horror, and it reminded me of one fort where I had a massive pit to drop invaders in that doubled as a garbage dump where I threw all my corpses.
For some unfathomable reason, my idle dwarves would go to the pit and just stand there screaming in horror at all the goblin and troglodyte skeletons laying everywhere. There was no reason for them to go there at all, and it was super out of the way so they had to intentionally seek it out. IIRC one of my dwarves died of dehydration because he was too busy screaming to go get a drink. It was the funniest fucking thing I've ever had happen in this game.

>" IIRC one of my dwarves died of dehydration because he was too busy screaming to go get a drink. It was the funniest fucking thing I've ever had happen in this game."

How was this even possible? Did you not have buckets or available water anywhere? I'm pretty sure dwarves get their discipline skill high enough (to stop being huge pussies) to make it across even the longest maps after getting horrified by death enough to make it back to anywhere to feed and hydrate themselves. I thought after walking past like less than a dozen corpses or something like that is enough to get them to stop crying about mortality
>>
>>153336462
I don't even know. I don't even know why they were going there in the first place, let alone how they were still getting horrified by it after the 80th time.

Typically you want to always aim for the legs/feet arms/hands first, whichever is the easiest to hit initially.

Once you get them to fall down, you can start wailing on the vitals.
stab -> upper torso for a chance at lung or heart damage,
attacking the lower torso to get them to puke and interrupt a retaliation is also good.

Only go for neck or heads if you know you can finish them off in one or two hits, otherwise repeat the aforementioned attacks until he passes out.

Goblins in cages are no longer part of siege.

I often get plenty after each siege. To bad it's little use for them.

Also is Giant Crystal Spider thing in DF or it's modded? (Made it pet anyway).
>>
>>153345879
It's my own personal mod. It's just a giant cave spider made of crystal glass. I wanted to make its webs have a fixed temp of 1000 like nethercap does, but I don't think it worked.
>>
>>153345379
Ok, just to clarify:
You did delete everything DF related on your machine, redownloaded the new version (64bit windows) right off the bay12 website (and made sure the download is not incomplete), and extracted it to a new folder.

You then turned of save compression and generated a new default world. No old save or anything.

You really did these things, all of them, completely and in that order, no cheating;
And you still get save corruption?
>>
>>153346229
I deleted the previous installations, turned off save compression and generated a new world.

The one thing in there I didn't do, is download the 64 bit installation, as I'm using certain DFhack tools (like TWBT which I also turned off for safety's sake), so I install with Lazy Newb Pack.

What bugs me, is that I had the original download put away for safety purposes. I re-installed the same version (this used to work up until at least a few weeks ago), and the issue persists.

What kills me, is that this exact installation from the exact same source (again, had the original download) used to work, so all I can think, is that some 3rd party software is interfering, and I hope someone here has recently run into similar issues.

Maybe I should give up on DFHack and move to vanilla new version, but that wouldn't really help figure out what I messed up in the system.
>>
>>153346501
Wait, which version are you even using? Dfhack doesn't work for the new version.

First of all, do what I said, with the version you intend to use (the last one DFhack works with, I assume).
Test for corruption. If it's all good, install dfhack, test for corruption again. Don't install TWBT, don't install the lnp, ONLY DFhack with nothing enabled.

If that works, enable the plugins you want to use one by one, test for corruption for each one (or do a binary dissection, but once it's fucked up, it might stay fucked up, so I'd advise against that).
If you enabled every plugin you want to use and it's not corrupted yet, you're good to go.

Also, just don't use the LNP - It's really not a good idea to introduce YET ANOTHER layer of possible problems on top of such a complicated install.

And while we're at it: NEVER EVER -- seriously, N E V E R -- extract a new df version on top of an old one, and never use init.txt and other files from old versions without comparing them first.
>>
>>153346823
>And while we're at it: NEVER EVER -- seriously, N E V E R -- extract a new df version on top of an old one, and never use init.txt and other files from old versions without comparing them first.
Oh yeah, no I get that.

What I mean is that when you download LNP, it includes the full DF installation, plus all of DFHack and etcetera.
I just unzipped that again like I've done previously after deleting the previous installation.
I didn't install a new DF version over it, I didn't install a new DFHack version over it, just the exact same files as I had when I installed it last.
Basically:
>Months ago: Download LNP
>Install it
>Play without problems
>Take a few week break
>All of a sudden save corruptions left and right
That's all that happened

But yeah, I guess it would give at least a bit of direction if I'd started from scratch like that.

Still 90% sure this has something to do with a windows update or something of the sort. I don't remember having these issues before.
>>

>>

>>
>>153347297
My current modlist includes
>A desert orc civ with access to steel and a shitload of tamed animals. Their ethics cause them to usually be at peace with everyone except the elves, who constantly try to attack them. Their caravans come in winter
>Weaver spiders, which are cat sized cave spiders with eggs that can be processed into silk
>Giant crystal spiders, which are giant cave spiders made of crystal glass. Their silk was supposed to be a fixed temperature but I messed it up and can't be fucked to fix it
>Cavesnappers, which are essentially just plump helmets reflavored as venus flytraps for variety
>Trollfur moss, which is a pig tail clone
>Ghostroses. The bushes themselves can be milled into spectral dye, or they can be processed into petals which can then be pressed into oil for soapmaking. Ghostrose soap is significantly more valuable than usual soap because who would choose to smell like crundle tallow when they could smell like roses instead?
I really like making mods. It's half the fun of the game for me. I have a few mods I plan on making eventually too. An alloy of adamantine that just makes it impossibly dense, some kind of elf-vegan metal derived from trees that only elves can work with, and a new secret type that grants dragonfire.
I also had an idea for rock-based creatures that would lay rough gems as eggs, but my first attempt was a disaster. I want to try again eventually though.

Please give ideas for building near a lake. Should I make my entrance on the lake or near it?

read the bug reports. It's a known issue, and basically nobody has any idea when and why it happens. It's not reproducible, so it most likely won't happen to you again any time soon.

It's reproducible in the save, happens every time, so I thought I would just compress the entire game folder to help out with debugging.

Web shooter titans/forgotten beasts

Against conventional foes they don't sit still long enough to do shit unless you have them hide inside fortifications.

Against web shooters they'll be the only dwarves that don't die nigh instantly, unless you cheat and lure the thing to a staircase so you can bum rush it.
>>

you just have to use them defensively, behind fortifications etc. making them fight enemies out in the open is just silly

Vampires are immortal, super strong, and they do stealth kills. They rack up a ton of kills over a long time.
>>

You need to put a roof on that shit. They can't climb out if there's nowhere for them to get out.
Also if there's no roof any flying faggot will jump right in.

Contrary to how the real world works, altitude difference reduces range no matter how high you are. It's best to shoot from the same z-level, so it's better to have a bunker rather than a tower.

Maybe they still have their original ruler, who has gone out on the warpath himself. You can alter creatures at will in an ongoing save. I suspect an orientation change falls into the latter category. If I'm correct, then you'll need dfhack to ungay the dwarves that are already at your fort.

Unless the bug has been fixed (last I checked it was not) the potential to be lovers and the potential to be married are mutually exclusive. That means dwarves who are capable of getting married have to do so during world gen or they effectively become asexual because you can't get married without being lovers and you can't become lovers if you can get married.
It's a stupid bug, but I'm all for anything that reduces fort-mode birthrates.

I've never really had dwarves get married. They're usually either already married or the age gap is too big among the people they're around.

always use the wiki and keep an eye on announcements, unit list, status/stocks and combat reports.

Make these things: Food, booze,

then: die.

Repeat three fortresses and get bored or get creative.

That's all there is to DF. No need for a utility.

DF is stupidly basic at its minimum.

Start with a ton of helm plums, an anvil, a copper axe, and at least one copper pick.
Brew helm plums to wine and plant more.
Have a carpenter make cages and a mechanic make cage traps.
Set up cage traps in chokepoint leading into your base.
you'll wanna make furniture etc. from that point, but that's all you need

Another unwanted report

The Pillar Men have perished, as has the entire fortress. Turns out drinking water from a well contaminated with wereiguana blood and mud is not great for one's health, as my dorfs died off 1 by 1 due to injuries subduing other dorfs that turned or dieing of starvation as I fucked up the farming and ran out of seeds AND THOSE ELVE FUCKERS NEVER BROUGHT ANYTHING USEFUL TO TRADE

Onto round 2, this time on a 4x4 embark tile with stone and not more fucking sand, the beginning of a brook right outside, and a young, savage world. My current main (only) fighter also seems to be stronger than the entirety of Australia, because when the Emus attacked he cut them down without mercy

Also a question, I made an outdoor farm plot only to realize I didn't actually bring any seeds for outdoor plants, so I'm trying to make an indoor plot without having to spend an eternity making my miners dig shit for irrigation when they could be digging storage and dorms
Is there an actual effective way to make an area muddy without going full on into irrigation? Just want to make some temporary plots but I tried digging a lowered area with ramps leading up and designating it as a pond (Actual 7 to try and speed up filling), but it doesn't seem to be working other than making the ramps muddy
>>
>>153470802

>Another unwanted report
I like reading them. Images would be nice too.
>>
>>153471358
>>153471467
Alright, I'll work on pictures (Honestly, most of my reports are written up when I'm at work away from my fortress, but have a few minutes to burn)

Tried doing the bucket setup described in the wiki, but then I actually went and read the farming page and saw an important piece of info
>Plots are very productive, so keep them small
That's where I think I went wrong, I was trying to get a max-size plot setup, and without actual irrigation I couldn't see a way that didn't involve a lot of time constructing temporary small reservoirs to prevent evaporation until I could get them filled and progressively break them down

I bet a little 2x2 or 3x3 area that's isolated won't be a problem at all

And another random note, I took a suggestion from the wiki in storing stuff in 3D as opposed to 2D and goddamn that's nice Got a mason, carpenter, craftsdwarf, wood smelter and regular smelter arranged in more or less a circle with a 2x2 of down stairs leading to a big storeroom for stone, logs, and bars.
I gotta say, it seems to be 100x faster than having a big storeroom on the same level
I don't think I understood blocks last time I played DF either, because when I looked up on the wiki what they were for it looked like the best thing ever for storage issues I used to fight with

IDEA

I want to use levers, restraints, and floor hatches to make gallows, so I can hang goblins. Here's my idea;
>place restraint
>surround restraint with floor hatches
>hook hatches up to lever
>assign goblin to restraint
>pull lever
I figure I have an 8/9 chance per pull of the lever for him to be on one of the hatches when they open. Will he fall at all? Will he actually dangle or will he fall all the way to the bottom? If he does dangle, will he be strangled?
>>
>>153485739
None. It's manually done by someone from the Cartographer's Guild (a map nerd forum).

There used to be a Photoshop or GIMP script that prettified DF maps, so you could do something like that, but it wouldn't place labels of course. And last time I checked, it wasn't in a usable state.

Only reason I used to ever keep .bmp was Toady had a weird thing where some of the libraries I use on Arch didn't see the .png normally, so I would edit the .exe to use the mouse.bmp and init.txt to use my tileset.bmp.

Now they work natively so there is no reason at all to use anything but .png.

Because the wiki offers bmp.

That isn't really a sound argument, the wiki offers whatever was available to be put up there. The .png format lets you use smaller files, full transparency options, and as of 43.05 works on all linux systems that I've seen tested.

Bullshit Microsoft Pictures are huge and pointless now, plus the format has lots of redundant crap and limits which newer formats lack.

Had a shitty fort with no military grade metals except tetrahedrite. It was attacked by goblins, so in a panic I set up a tunnel full of restraints and filled it with every nasty cave creature I'd caught, with a blind cave ogre front and center. He slaughtered goblins until he passed out from overexertion and bled to death, and almost immediately after he died my metalcrafter made a masterwork billon figurine depicting his death.

>multicultural fort
Do you really want a multicultural fort or just a multispecies fort? I ask because I'm not sure blind cave ogres even have a culture beyond being half a step above wild animals, so they would have to basically adopt Dwarven culture in order to be part of your society at all. Culture and race/species aren't the same thing, after all, you wouldn't say that every fortress that includes any domestic animals is "multicultural" would you? Even having goblins, humans and elves outnumbering dwarves doesn't necessarily mean that you've got a multicultural fort, so long as they've all been fully assimilated into Dwarven culture, if that's actually possible to properly do.

Q: In your feature in the New York Times, it was mentioned that you were into meth for a bit. How long? Have you gotten into any other substances, do you drink? How does one transition from a academic career in mathematics at Stanford into doing meth? Did you have trouble with stopping using?

A: The meth was a one time thing that happened during my first year at Stanford. I had hit a particularly low point since at the time I thought my brother was dead and there was somebody around to take advantage of me. When you are winding down you can tell immediately how addictive the stuff is, and fortunately I got myself out of that house before anything else happened. Another pic to bump, do wonder about some weird shit going on

The 5x5 outdoor farm by the entrance seems unable to grow anything (Nothing appears in the list for planting), while the smaller plots to the right have a huge variety of possible plants.
I assume it has something to do with biomes, but is there a way to actually see what areas are in what biome without just trial and error?

Also, past the entrance I was making 2 guard towers (Only entrance from underground path within the fort), but for some reason my woodcutters will refuse to take down the tree below the right stairs and the first one to the right of the stairs
I can mark them for chopping but they just get ignored yet my woodcutters will take down other trees no problem

And the rest of my fort
Second level I am planning to primarily be storage when I get around to actually making it decent, as well as military barracks and shit with paths leading to guard towers wherever I feel like putting them
3rd level is farms for now, I gotta say finding peat that I didn't have to muddy up first was nice, though I think something's wrong with my birds because non of them will claim nestboxes/lay eggs. Maybe it's because I tore down the nest boxes and moved their pasture down to here? Either way, they won't even claim new nest boxes so I dunno how to handle that other than try to buy some new birds from the next caravan that has them
The walled 2-story structure is going to be a small cistern, fills from the grated area (Just need to mine 1 block to hit the riverbed), and I'm prebuilding the tank and putting flood gates and hatches already in place so I hope later routing will be a lot easier
Step 1 will be getting those wells supplied, shouldn't be too bad since they're all vertical too

That or muddy stone, but there spots in most biomes where the underlying stone shows up, and if you've dug under where your farm is, the stones will probably switch from one type to another at the biome boundary.

How do you tame animals? I have a falcon that is only at the basic trained level but its level won't train. Worn clothes, trap components, and prepared meals. Those are always my staple exports because they're the easiest to cheese. If you don't want your clothiers and leatherworkers going bonkers, it's also the only sensible way to deal with worn clothes. Some years I can trade cast-off clothes exclusively, though not often.
I'll also export incidental extras, like totems and large gems, that come from pursuing other industries.

For some reason, animal training only gets scheduled as a job when the animal's training level is about to degrade. And animals which you captured as wild adults can never be trained to be fully tame.

In order to domesticate an animal species, you have to capture a breeding pair (or more), train them, and then have them produce offspring while actively [trained]. The offspring will inherit some kind of hidden domestication value, depending on their parents' status and your civilizatin's general level of familiarity with the animal in question. You then have to schedule these offsprings for training, and depending on their hidden domestication value, they may or may not become [tame], or fully domesticated. Sometimes this process may take multiple generations to accomplish.

In short, just buy tame animals from the elves.

That's not accurate. Children born from trained parents inherit the training level of the mother at the time of their birth (or at the time the eggs were laid if applicable), and it's not hidden. A child, whether it's born with a training level or not, will become tame after a single training session. There's no chance for failure, one training session will make the child tame 100% of the time.

Is there some dworf-y way to reliably catch fliers apart from just laying cage traps all over the map?

So I wanted to try ramps and I read the wiki but I'm still a bit confused on it. If I want it going through my entire fort do I set it up like this? I heard it's better for FPS than U/D Stairs.
>>
>>153617660
No, that diagram won't work the way you drew it. If you did tweak it to work it would be much less efficient and much more of an FPS drain than a stairway.
>>
>>153618053
Hmm alright. Guess I'll just stick to a 3x1 staircase for now, then. Dunno why I'm having such a hard time grasping ramps I feel like such a dumbass.
>>
>>153618171
Just experiement with them a little, you'll figure it out. Designing your fort to use ramps effectively is possible, your drawing just doesn't do it. Really, though, there's no difference in the FPS cost of a rampway vs a stairway that uses the same number of tiles. And doing things just for FPS efficiency is a boring way to play.

Oh yes, especially stockpiles. And I make sure to get rid of ALL my stockpiles when I do, because I hate having my lowest numbered stockpile being 74 or something. Stockpiles with more than two digit numbers don't display as well, so it's important to make full use of the first 99 numbers. In my current fort I did a stockpile wipe about half a year ago and I'm going to do another soon. Maybe then I'll get my shit in gear and not have everything such a mess. The fact that I won't need as many temporary stockpiles for building my walls will help.

>plump helmet spawn storage cancelations due to no reason
The reason is probably the glitchy way containers work. I've taken to forbidding barrels in my seed stockpiles, since it seems that there can be only one active job per container at a time so if more than one dwarf wants to put seeds in or take seeds out of a barrel at the same time, all but one will have a cancellation, and possible other problems. I think this is also a leading cause of having dozens of bags with only a couple of seeds each, even if you've only got a few types of seeds.

I'm currently playing a sort of paladin devoted to a god of sacrifice.
He's a pikeman who has been running around exterminating night trolls to prepare to clear out a vault created by a goddess of disease, deformity, death and suicide.

I just discovered a necromancer tower, and now I'm conflicted. On the one hand I'd love to be a necromancer so I never have to deal with eating, drinking or sleeping, but on the other hand this guy is a night creature hunter who has a personal quest against the goddess who sponsored this tower.
What should I do?

first the moon/star/night sky vault had no swords and now I'm clearing out the vault of depravity and lust, which is filled with vomit guards. At least the vault of lust has transparent leggings, skirts, and robes.

Stay strong brother, do not fall to temptation and purge the heresy from the land.
>>
>>153632557
I've managed to kill the bulk of their undead army, though I was forced to steal an iron carving knife from one of the zombies and use that to fight them. Pikes are not particularly effective against undead.
The necromancers themselves however have been little match for my pike. I've killed three of them so far, and there's still another eleven remaining.

>>153634045
I chose pikes specifically because my last adventurer died in the vault and I knew they used pikes. Also I've never played a pikeman before.

I've only been playing for a few years, but I think that's been how it works since day one. Part of me wants to say that makes sense, like say you're in a car crash and your head jerks back enough to fuck up your neck, and it's pretty cool gameplay-wise.
But it's just a fucking weredeer, that can't be larger than thrice the size of a dwarf like a truck is to a person in the driver's seat. Or in this case being able to supply enough force in a swing to adequately destroy a dwarf's spine.
Like if it took more than one good hit then yeah, but the first hit shouldn't be able to outright ruin someone unless the creature is massive compared to the victim.

As much as I like being able to obliterate some dude's arm and take half his body along with it or snapping the lower spine with a lower leg hit, it's pretty annoying when a glancing blow to the head can implode your upper spine.

I happened to catch the cusp of the mortality curve too I think:
40172 dwarves in 179-01-01
32796 dwarves in 179-07-15
27713 dwarves in 179-09-03

I embarked in a terrifying site and I've managed to survive so far, I was thinking, if one of my dwarfs die, is it safe to bury it or should I either pulverize it or dump it into magma and then make a memorial? Is there any way to bury them in a regular coffin?

There's no way to bury dwarves at all except by dropping cave-ins on them. Kind of begs the question of what you meant by burying them in the first case if putting them in a coffin isn't what you meant. You can indeed build coffins and inter dwarves in them.
The part of your question that's sensible to me: whether or not you need to destroy corpses depends on whether you're in a reanimating biome. Find out, and if you are then destroy corpses, if you aren't then deal with them however you please.

Better yet: dig a ramp, build the coffins, get the bodies placed in there and then put a floor over it, leave them howling down there forever, go all Charles Dexter Ward and shit!
>>
Hey /dfg/, I have a question. It's probably a stupid one. I have a really hard time managing a fortress past more than like 50 dwarves. Now, the obvious solution is to set that as the pop cap, but then I won't get sieged. Do you guys have any tips for keeping larger number of dwarves busy? Is it just a matter of assigning them to an industry and contiually expanding your industries? Right now I have about 80 dwarves and pretty much one of everything except the farming labours where I've got a mob of like 15, and a 20 odd man military which is where I've been dumping people I couldnt find a use for.
>>
So here's an interesting thing. The captain of the guard is apparently a complete slob and keeps getting the fort flooded with miasma because he keeps letting food rot in his personal chest
And the best part is, no one will even clean it up until I go and find the rotten turkey leg or whatever and mark it to dump.
Will they not auto-dump shit like that or am I missing something?

I'm also having a dogsplosion and not sure if it's a good thing or not since I'm training 80% of them as war dogs and every time a grizzly bear shows up they sprint out of the fortress and mob the poor bastard. Should probably butcher some until I'm down to 2 dogs per dwarf or something, is dealing with excess dogs through butchering as difficult as removing cats?
>>
>>153668636
The cool thing about it is that it's actually caused by a personality trait. Some dorfs will simply have slobby personalities which make them leave shit on the floors in their room.
>>
>>153668636
no, dogs don't automatically acquire owners like cats do.
>>
So I'm trying to follow the wiki's guide to getting marksdwarves to train, and I've run into a problem.

The guide says to issue multiple orders of "train 1 soldier minimum" to force the whole squad to train archery, but I can't figure out how to do that. It seems like the only orders I can issue are burrow protection.
>>
>>153668636
>>153668926
Leaving food to rot in rooms isn't caused by a personality trait, it's caused by a uniform conflict related to http://bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=1451. A dwarf with one of the conflicting civilian labors who goes off military duty will store his food in his room (usually in the backpack that's part of their military uniform), where it will inevitably rot. Every dwarf who is in the military and has one of those labors will do this regardless of their personality, as the food is considered their property when they claim it for their rations.
>>
>>153670042
Maybe, but leaving clothes on the floor is definitly caused by a personality trait.
>>
>>153668926
>>153670042
And here I was planning to relocate that fucker into a room behind airlocks
Would just removing his civilian job (Coincidentally he's a woodcutter too, and I'm having issues getting trees cut down) and just having him be military/hauling only fix that?

>>153668998
Korea-mode activate, I bet I'll even be able to make enough bags to hold all these damn seeds
>>
>>153670526
no. But there is a known bug that causes military dwarves to leave food laying around. Something to do with issued food and uniforms. That may be the problem. Remove food from his squad's supplies, see if it stops.
>>
>>153670526
Yes, removing the woodcutting labor will solve the issue. Don't make him a miner or hunter either. Those are the civilian labors that conflict with military uniforms, and cause them to remove their entire uniform when they go off duty (including owned rations) regardless of uniform settings. Any other civvie labors are fine.
>>
>>153670854
Will try, not like it can hurt anything since they can get to food easily enough anyways

>>153672337
I wonder if that's why my hunters are so shitty at hunting too, since they're all in the military too but there's really just not many animals to hunt so I haven't been keeping an eye on them

They make good dog trainers though
>>
>>153674407
If you have as many spare crossbows and quivers as hunters in the military, as well as enough bolts that some get assigned to hunters after military ammo assignments then your hunters will still be able to hunt. It's a lot less efficient than just pointing a squad at whatever animal you want dead, though.
>>
>>153675084
I rarely get the opportunity to do that, the dogs tend to get there first plus at any given time 99% of the wild animals roaming around are ravens
>>
Beekeeping.
Worth it? Or too much trouble for the products?
>>
What do you guys grow for food?
>>
>>153678957
I tend to grow each available underground plant.
Except dimple cups cause I don't really care about making dye.
>>
I need some help, fellow dorves. I have a bad tendency to get really overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff I have to keep track of when a fort is starting to make its way up. Either that or or get bored and delete it. I've tried savage biome but I've just not had anything interesting happen at my forts. What do

Dwarf Therapist if you aren't using it already

its almost essential when you get more than 80 or so dorfs to manage

Smooth the boulders, build roads out where you want it to go to.
>>
>>153682034
Yeah I do use therapist it's more of an "oh god how many new clothes do we need? How are we almost out of drinks we have 80 seeds?" I also seem to run into an issue where some items will just straight up be forbidden for a some reason so I have to periodically check the stockpiles screen.
>>
So I've been playing for a few hours.

I'm used to the graphics, but the one thing that is REALLY fucking me up is the labor allocation of my dwarfs. Because every dwarf looks the same, I find it incredibly difficult to keep track of who's doing what. After a while I just gave up, and now I don't bother changing my dorfs' labour assignments - i just leave it at the defaults they come with.

is that going to be a problem in the long term?

It can help to give them unique nicknames or professions. A, b, c for names or something.

it's okay to use therapist, but PLEASE stop pushing the notion that the game would be impossible to play without it

>a white sand road
You mean dirt. It's not a road, it's just dirt.

You don't actually need a road, and caravans aren't any more likely to use one than any other passable path to your depot. If you have a ton of trees growing on your map then it may be worthwhile to build one on the offchance that they grow thick enough to block every possible 3-wide path from a map edge to your depot, but it's not very likely even in heavily forested biomes.

It's not THAT necessary. I don't use it and regularly have forts at around 80+ dwarves.
