I miss victory dancing and the XP pool. I also miss Ice Storm. And Paralyze, the spell. And Enchantments. And AC being stupidly powerful. And choosing a specialty of Ice/Fire when playing Wizards/Conjurers. And Freezing Cloud being in the Book of Conjurations [Ice]. And the Cheibro giving free resistances in addition to the high stats. And the huge number of options you used to have for starts.
I'm honestly considering playing Linley's Crawl.

So how are you meant to handle threat assessment in these types of games? For example, the troll in ToME4's starting area, or ADOM's vortexes. Outside of playing with a wiki up, is your only option to just chance it? Oh, instantly minced, I won't do that next time?

Everything hits you for dickballs of damage and everything. EVERYTHING offensive is melee ranged. Any elemental damage requires you to split your stats 4 ways. same with debuffs. If you stick with str based skills you still have a whopping cunning.

All told, Dark/Debuff Vodun's mask is going pretty good. I've been going all-in into cunning so I can land hexes even if it's gonna kill me later. Hex makes sure we affect anything not immune. weigh sin lets me chip in for the heal effort. Tried to fish up some more slash moves for headless with the red cap so I have a physical buffer Headless with a light fuse for resist that applies pariah and can heal itself. a mostly infection based leecher malingee with an ice fuse for resist, the red cap is a swap front liner until he dies off. I got a gand for a mana battery. A huo Sho i'm building as a fire/poison ignition stacker. i'll get a healer somewhere down the road.

I dunno what the dev changed but demon's early game is a lot more accessible now.

Abyss scumming isn't as easy as you think it is. You need several things to level depending on several factors (race, class, skillset, spellset) before you can comfortably do that and even then, some risks are still present. The fact that you need to cherry pick in Pan clearly indicates that there's risk involved and you need to back off occasionally.

Elona simply has zero. You want something specific in X shop (ex. cure corruption, potential potion, weapon/armour X)? Then wait for several days outside the town for the shop restock. You still don't have it? Rinse and repeat until you do.

Now tell me if there's a single risk in there. You are on the world map just a single tile beside the town, probably taking it easy and jacking off to your little girl pet every single day of waiting or whatnot.

That specific longsword is actually very good for a prelair-midlair dude. The brand is actually great for that stage in the game, the strength helps with damage (+5 str is a lot) and armour, and the other items will help snowball. That chainmail is pretty good too. He'll obviously replace it with a better, branded weapon later but it'll hard carry him for a good amount of time.

Kind of makes me wonder, do enemies get stabs? Or is that purely on a "we want this enemy to have stabs" basis, like shadows? In any case, I was actually very worried about the poison in this case. They both had venom and would have easily taken me to red in 1-2 turns, and petrification can potentially last about 10. Maybe I'm overestimating the danger, but I've had very bad petrification cases and feel its better to be wary than try and wait out a somewhat dangerous petrification. Even with dumbass minotaur stats.

If you're pumping magic or cunning, you will never be able to be in melee range with nuStrength. Pick up the first ranged ability you can find and disregard your melee abilities. If you really want to be in melee, pump vitality or overpowered nuStrength. Strength is getting nerfed in the next update, so you won't take extra damage from no str, and the benefits of high levels of str are reduced. I asked on the forum and the dev said you can't do a fusion if the demon won't have any weaknesses. How did you get a cold resistant malingee? Was he a random spawn? Also check on the forum for a dark healer build, it's pretty fun but a little slow to start up. Also ability copies are insanely cheap now so that might make the build start up even faster.

If you want to play debuffer, vodun mask with pierce/pierce is really good, just stack on a ton of debuff passives and spam needles. Regular debuff attacks are kinda shit honestly, since most only apply one effect at a time, and the better ones have moderate/high sp costs. Passive debuffs don't cost anything extra, which allows you to spam the needles and apply multiple debuffs at once

Depends on your species. If you're a troll — unarmed first. If you're an Op — transmutations first. If you're a Te — enough transmutations to use spiderform, then dodging. You get 30+ EV on d4 this way.
Spiderform is awesome. Blade hands are even more awesome but expensive. So get spiderform then combat skills.
