There are reports of warriors using twohanded "longswords" all the way in the early dark ages.

It wasn't something that was common. The fact that people mention it as something remarkable is enough evidence it was rare.

But it existed.

Same goes for 2h axes. There was bound to be at least one dude who said "Gee, I wonder what happens if I get rid of this woodsplitting axehead on my woodcutters axe, and put this waraxe head on top of the handle."

In fact, I imagine coming up with a 2h axe is easier than thinking "You know what, I wish my sword had an extra long hilt so I could use two hands instead of one to swing."

2h axes such as the danish axes aren't heavy at all, the blade is consistently thin from edge to haft
but like i said both have strengths and weaknesses, a halberd can be used further away while the axe is shorter but both of those are advantages or detriments depending on the conditions of the fight

Had a ~200 man army of almost exclusively top-tier units, mostly knights of casterly rock and vet westerland archers. Hostile AI never broke through the chokepoint at the end of the 1 (one) ladder they had, and got positively BTFO by my archers from the sides.

It has a few shortcomings and very strange design decisions but overall I'd say it is a good pirate game.

The ship combat isn't as good as AOP2
The land combat is of course better it is M&B after all.
AOP2 has trading but no resource or port/town management so B&G: Caribbean! beats that easily but it isn't as good as Port Royale 2. Though that is understandable since Port Royale 2 is a trading/management game.

As far as being your own faction B&G: Caribbean! beats Port Royale 2 and AOP2 as neither of those games has it.

PR2 lets you have your own port but I remember correctly you have to belong to one of the 4 nations or you are a pirate. There is no "independent//player" faction. AOP2 has even less as I think owning a port makes you hostile to everyone and dosn't really let you do anything ith it besides free docking and maybe taxes?
