RimWorld follows a number of survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of known space. Inspired by the space western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, the epic scale of Dune, Warhammer 40,000.

I'm tempted to start building tunnels through the mountains near my base and setting up rooms inside of there. Does anyone know the temperature range that megascarabs and megaspiders are comfortable within? I'm tempted to try setting up heaters to cook them to death for when they spawn.

Yea I got fucked. I only had 3 shooters out of six colonists and one of them got one shot early, the rest were non-violent/brawlers. Also my trap placement was shit, I should've built them around the ship instead in front of the sandbags like an idiot
>>
>>153357893
Probably the safest way I've dealt with those ships is someone with a sniper rifle. That gun outranges scyther agro range as they patrol around the ship, letting you plink them off.
>>
>>153357325
>>153358060

>>
>>153358153
I wouldn't trust the mortar to hit the same fucking map that it's on, nevermind a crashed ship.
>>
>>153358060
You have to micro that shit like crazy, though. One false move and your sniper loses a limb.
>>
>>153358672
It'll hit just fine... as long as the raiders are using it
>>
Fuck, mods aren't updating fast enough. Do you guys still play A14 or have you moved to A15? Also, favorite mods?
>>
>>153358731
Nah. I would literally just sit on the very edge of the aggro range and go do something else until the sniper needed food or some joy. I don't tell the sniper to attack the ship, I just have them moved just far enough to engage whatever comes into range.

Another neat thing is that they outrange centipede weapons, so you can never get hit by them if you micro them.
>>

>>153376064
Infections and diseases that have severities (e.g. minor, major, extreme) will kill the colonist once it progresses past extreme. It stops progressing once the colonist reaches 100% immunity. Immunity is gained over time, gets a bonus if they're in bed, and has negatives if they're old, hungry, tired, or missing a kidney. Progression can be slowed by being treated, and I believe it slows more if treated with a skilled doctor and better medicine.

Some animals can be trained as haulers, which is pretty useful. You don't want them running around outside your defenses, though.
>>
>>153377923

Keep animals that can be trained to haul, other skills are useless. Pigs seem to be quite good at that.

eggs and hay has to be under a roof bc it detoriates. Animals won't care if they're under the sky or under a roof, so I usually don't bother and just build them a room with a sunlamp that grows hay.

Ehhhh thats kinda dumb, anon.
Animals can get hypothermia, so yes you want a roof.
Just set up a stockpile inside the animal room with kibble and hay or whatever as the only allowed items and set priority to important.

And personally I only bother with 1 or 2 animal beds for healing purposes. Its doubtful all of your animals are suddenly going to be injured.

Get a few of the centipedes and they'll friendly fire the fuck out of one another. Otherwise, just pour fire into it. If you have someone disposable you could run up and have him hit it to prevent it from firing, but he'll probably die. They are surprisingly effective in melee. Charge rifles do well against them, since they're so fuckin big any decent shooter will hit them a majority of the time. Fully bionic men with power armor, brawler, and a very good weapon/power claw, can take one in melee somewhat reliably.

Mechanoids also get BTFO by bugs. In fact, through testing in dev mode, I can say bugs are some of the most powerful enemies in the game if they get big enough. A bug colony with 15+ hives can destroy a 8000 point mechaniod raid, since scythers are fragile and megaspiders out class centipedes in melee once you get a few of them. The only thing that will really ruin a big enough hive is fire.

Rooms gain the spacious buff at....7x7 I believe?
>>
>>153418646
That depends on a lot of factors. Each colonist consumes ~1 nutrition per day (variable depending on injuries, moods, etc.). A single tile of strawberries on 100% quality soil will produce 0.07 nutrition per day and cooking it into a simple meal will increase value by 50%. So if you have 3 growing seasons and a chef, you should probably have at least 13 tiles of strawberries per colonist. More in the event of disasters.

Room size will be variable depending on what you want out of them. A 7x7 room is enough to give a colonist happy thoughts on space, so if you don't have mood boosts coming from anywhere else, give them some room to breathe. If you're letting them use social drugs or have fine art everywhere, or you're making fine meals, or you're shaping your environment to be beautiful with flowers and trees, you can afford to have smaller rooms. Try to give everyone a double bed and a heater/cooler to survive harsh temperatures though, so at least 5 tiles of space.

my megatherium keeps eating my roses
why can't it just eat grass?
>>
>>153428701
Aim for maximum efficiency with food production. That means turn everything that you can into either pemmican or simple meals. Pemmican uses 0.5 nutrients worth of materials and produces 0.9 nutrients worth of pemmican, simple means are 0.5 to 0.85 nutrients. Don't tame animals. No animal has a good nutrient conversion factor and they're only worthwhile early on if you're having them graze on wild grasses, essentially converting wild grass into milk/meat/eggs. If you can get ~100 tiles of crops going you should be able to subsist well enough until you're more setup. Otherwise hunt everything in the area into extinction.

Do you really think I only grabbed the ones nearby? Learn how to play the game. I literally got chunks from the whole map *before* actively mining for chunks (I didn't want to spawn infestations too early).

>when did you manage to then turn that into sandstone blocks and then make the entire base
Learn how to play the game. Specialize your colonists, so they get skills faster and build stuff faster.
Also, since I planned everything since the beginning, I didn't need to waste material building and then demolishing.

(And it's granite. It looks NOTHING like sandstone.)

>when did you manage to mine 2000 steel
Do you really think mining is the only way to get steel? Learn how to play the game.

you have barely done any mining, only to open space for what you have pre designed, unless the game decided to give you mechs with no functioning AI so you can get steel you dev moded that shit in, traders dont casually carry 2k metal that early in the game unless you completely randomly got lucky enough for that to happen, just like they carried gold and plasteel for your multi-analyzer i guess

you gave your dudes speed suits from the glitter tech mod so they can run around and collect all the chunks and then turn them into bricks and THEN make all the walls ?

its a darker shade of sandstone you colour blind retard

trading with what ? the dev moded in items or did your colonists equip their speed suits to make your tradeable goods after your researcher/miner/farmer managed to unlock the entire tech tree for you

If you do want to keep on that argument, then COUNT the amount of granite blocks in that picture and do the math, considering each chunk is enough to build four pieces of wall.

Because I totally got the 2k metal at once, I totally didn't get some here, some there...

Regarding the bugs: I actually made a small "room" to force them to spawn there, pic related. I usually don't bother farming them when food is plentiful - I might do it on a seasonal map.

And again, I'm going to repeat: those are very easy settings. Food grows through the year, I chose a place with granite because it's considerably harder than the other rocks, this is NOT on permadeath, Chillax Rough... get it?

Wasn't sure if this would actually work since I didn't know the comfortable temperature range of bugs. Glad it did, this means I can run tunnels everywhere in relative safety. I'm also tempted to try out a mountain base now and make it modular so I can just roast any given section at a whim.

Woah. That's sad. I thought that's a nice little touch.
>>
What's the best textile to make your clothes with, considering cost/effectiveness? Devilstrand takes ages to grow.
>>
>>153447186
Alpaca wool. Good insulation values, you get 120 every 15 days, Alpacas only eat 0.5 nutrients per day (10 units of food or just over 4 tiles of grass) and it's decently valuable for the work put into it. You'll need about 5 tiles of haygrass per Alpaca you intend to keep that isn't grazing. Comparably if you were to invest those tiles into Cotton you'd get ~100 cotton in the same amount of time, so quantity wise it's not bad.
>>
Dining chairs are pretty good if you have access to wood. Stools require a very high quality to be able to provide the 10+ luxuriantly comfortable mood bonus.
>>
>>153447382
Nice, thanks.

What about muffalo wool? I'm aware they produce less, but do you think they're worth raising?
>>
>>153447525
I usually spam them everywhere colonists sit. The best ones go to workbenches, the okay ones to the actual dining room, the worst ones are deconstructed.
>>
>>153447382
how do i get more alpacas for breeding if i can only find one on the map
>>
>>153447724
Not him, but buy them from caravans/trading ships and always give a look at the borders of the map. You might want to kill some carnivores too, to avoid them hunting the alpacas.
(After you got two breeding pairs, you're set.)
>>
>>153446380
Can you build things around infestations while they're sleeping?
>>
I don't know if an a13 or 14 addition, but I really dislike how everything needs components now - they're costly as fuck both in time and steel. Also making the component bench require components is silly.

>>153446380
It works better than fire - you can relocate the heaters when done. The problem is the relative cost of it.

Yes, you just need to set your colonists to do nothing instead of fleeing or attacking hostiles. At about ~180f the hives were producing enough megascarabs to maintain themselves and produce glow lights and royal jelly before the scarabs would succumb to heat exhaustion. I took my eye off of them for a moment though and a colonist walked in and killed a batch and then the hives decayed from lack of maintenance.

>>153447591
Here are my notes on animal products. You'll notice that Muffalo wool isn't much better than Alpaca wool at anything and it takes 30 days to get 100 wool. You end up spending more nutrients per wool.
>>
this transfer from 14 to 15 is making me sad

keeping the game at 14 was simple enough, but some mods will update to 15 without leaving an archived alpha 14 available, and some mods are on workshop only and when they move to alpha 15 thats it i can't

i had to have snatched all the mod folders as they were the day before alpha 15's release for things not to get detached

even if i went through the rigamarole of tweaking my current save to get into A15 i bet there's gonna be compatibility eras in the other direction, i think we're still waiting for CCL to update right
>>
>>153448509
Yeah, I'm much happier with heaters in this scenario than molotov fire. I'm going to be leaving them in the tunnels set to -2f so that they consume the passive 18W instead of the max 175W to maintain heat levels. Whenever an infestation pops up I'll set them to 300f to handle the infestation for me. I don't mind the energy cost or steel cost. Saving myself pathing time is a valuable investment.

>>153447724

A few notes, milk is 0.05 nutrients each, eggs are 0.25 nutrients each, and only chickens can lay unfertilized eggs. You'll need to specially set stoves to use fertilized eggs as they won't cook with them by default.

Here's a crop guide to help you manage the animals. Note that 70% is gravel, 100% is soil/lichen covered soil, 140% is rich soil, and 230% is hydroponics. I've been trying to update my values for v15 but some values are still missing for the new drugs and I need to test hops and hydroponics still.

>>153449638
Nah, it's the opposite. You will never get more nutrients output via milk and meat vs just growing the food and cooking them yourself. Milk is almost useless unless you send to gaze the map's grass. On the other hand, since you will always be waist deep in corpses on higher difficulties, Carnivores are incredibly easy to raise

Animal Husbandry is only for 2 things, silver and meat production. For silver, the bests are raising cobras and Yorshire Terriers/Cats as a pet industry. Alpacca wool is also incredible valuable for some reason. For meat, pigs are undoubtedly the best to butcher but chickens reproduce fast enough given a surplus of food.

On extreme conditions map, you might want to buy Alpaccas to get wool production for your clothes but it might be difficult to raise them since there's barely any growing room.

You can turn milk and eggs into simple meals too, so they both benefit from the conversion equally. That said, you are correct, animals are not an efficient way to produce nutrients, but nutrients aren't really a problem once you've established yourself. The added benefit of animals, especially early on, is that you can trade them for bionics and other high value items as exotic goods traders and other traders take them. I think only bulk goods traders and tribal traders buy raw foods.

You can't grow devilstrand in a hydroponics basin. You need 38 uninterrupted days under ideal conditions in order to grow devilstrand. The easiest way to do this is to place a sun lamp in the center of an 11x11 room with a heater and cooler keeping the temperature at 70f/21c. It'll cost you about 2,000W to set this up but it'll let you grow 100 tiles worth of devilstrand (or any other crops). Note that crops will not grow between the hours of 19.5h and 5h. They'll start growing again at 6h sharp. Also don't try to grow crops in the corners of the room. They'll only be at 60% light, which permits 20% growth, which means your crop will die before it ever can yield. Just use the 'Create Grow Zone' button on the sun lamp to get an ideally shaped growing area.

Big bedrooms are a waste of space really. The only reason people should be in their bedrooms is to sleep or meditate.

Of course you can. You can just recruit your other colonists and have them all shoot her. You can also perform an operation to euthanize her. You could down a panther/cougar, rescue them into an enclosed room with no food, and have said colonist confined to that room (perhaps even wall it off). You could have them just go punch an elephant. You could imprison her and sell her off to pirate traders, or have her smoke Flake until she OD's. Not only do they maul the shit out of any retarded natives trying to steal the fucking ice from your freezer because heatwave is killing their backwards asses, they also maul the shit out of any dumb animals on the map. Yes, wolves, wargs, all that crap is on the bears menu. Why would you want that? Because they kill the annoying shits murdering your livestock, and you can butcher anything they don't eat. Not only you don't need to feed them, they produce meat for you. And them being capable of hauling 161 units of hay is just an icing on the cake, because with their advanced intelligence they can be taught to haul. Why? Got it.

Pigs will be slower (from 3.6 to 3.0) because they're lazy and fat. However, they'll have larger litters (from ~2 to ~4) and get adult slightly faster (from 0.5 to 0.4). Do you think this is enough?

Also, I might as well do some changes to wild boars, to make them better haulers (increase their carrying capacity from 53 to 75).

I'll release the mod tomorrow. It'll have the following contents:
* Livestock balancing - to make them more attractive. Muffalo, pig, wild boar specially. I'm considering to make cows milkable each two days but yield the double of the milk for hauling reasons.
* Food preserves - they'll stack up to 150, nuff said.
* Batch cooking - 5 recipes at once.
* Lavish meal rebalancing - instead of 10 veggies + 10(meat or animal product), it'll require 5 veggies + 5 meat + 5 animal product. So it's a bit cheaper, but it requires three categories. (Milk and cheese will be considered animal products for this purpose instead of veggie food)

>>153505291
IRL pigs get adult sexuality-wise after six months old; the game is faithful in this regard.

However, one can claim Rimworld livestock was enhanced by artificial selection to mature faster. I'm doing it 20% faster for the sake of balance, but if needed, I'll do it even faster.

>larger body, but same speed - now they can haul a whole stack

HOW TO: download the zip and move the folder inside it to the "Mods" folder.
This should work with older saves without problems.

AFAIK cover is only effective if you touch it.
>>
>>153513446
Read the cover tool tip about. As long as your colonist are adjacent to it and it's between them and the person shooting at them is acts as cover which makes you harder to hit.

So what crop is the most efficient in this build? Corn used to be the way to go, but it apparently got nerfed and now it takes so fucking long to grow. I'm not sure it's even that efficient anymore, and the longer growtime leads to bigger risk of being fucked by blights and solar flares.

Rice?

I don't do hydroponics, it's a huge resource and energy drain for little gain, and solar flares will kill all crops regardless of outside temperature. Better to use greenhouses with normal soil, imo.

But rice seems to be best even without hydroshit.

Igor the Surgeon needed help because he was chased by tribesmen.
Surgeon, wow. I thought he will be good in Medicine.
What I got was a below average Medic with well developed drug adictions and pretty much no remarkable talent in anything.
So he is basically my cleaning lady now.

Btw, I forbid the entry to the drugroom. The interaction with the door is prohibited. Will this hold him away from the drugs? Unfortunatly I got a little of what he wants there.

Trying to improve my Devilstrand productivity.
I was farming 1000 per year and it was not enough to even sustain my own need.

So this should be able to give me a harvest after 30 days and damn do these lamps eat much Energy. 1600W is immense. This hightec farm is now 60% of my Energy consumption.
>>
>>153522814
Are they inside the home zone? Do the colonists have the "repair" work enabled? If yes, just wait until colonists decide to repair it or click on a colonist, right-click on the turret and force him to work.

>>153522973
None. You might as well check their skills before recruiting, though. If they're shit, leave them to die.

>>153523074
A trick I've found useful: connect all the lamps to a single switch, turn them off and remove the roof. Only rebuild the roof when needed (toxic fallout).
>>
>>153523074
Plants need to sleep so turning on the lights at night is useless. Since you're playing in baby climate, there's no need to put a sunlamp or roofing the place unless its a coldsnap/heatwave.
>>
>>153523253
>>153523349
It grows faster with the lamps. Because it gets dark already at 18h. I don't know for sure when the Plants have rest time my guess is from 24h-6h.
This way I get 6h more growing time. This is around 1,5% more per day which is an increase in productivity of roughly 30%.

Is it worth it? I don't know but I will see.
>>
>>153524167
