So, I have started over with a far more minimalist style, and am trying to use the lighting advice from >>153235017

The small side at least hides the terrible art slightly. This is the right edge lighting. I also did a both edges lighting and a left edge lighting.

It still looks like shit, but it is getting better. I think this is good enough to work off of.

Trying to find free music is suffering. Either it doesn't fit at all, or it sort of fits but doesn't loop. I just need music for this ludum game

Game development encompasses more than just 'programming'. This isn't the daily programming thread. This deals with anything that may or may not show up in your game.

If your game features the sound of you pissing into the toilet. Then recording your piss is literally game development.

There is a big giant market for JoJo games because the latest ones have been underwhelming, so go make some JoJo games

Go read the manga as well so you can steal ideas for it
>>
>>153268246
I fucking hate this shit. Non-commercial 'free assets' makes it fucking annoying to look for actual free assets since a shitload of people don't seem to realize the asset they put out for 'free' and 'anyone can use for any purpose' licensed under share-alike or no commercial use means no, you cannot use it for any purpose.

Your asset is not 'free', it's available for limited use, you fucking twats
>>
>>153269098
Also Jojo is a hyper recognizable franchise with a very tight grip on their royalties. So good luck not getting a S&D if you try and go commercial.
>>
>>153269047
I dunno, I guess if you release it and they heard of it, they're not entirely sure if it's 100 but they feel entitled to it so would try to fuck you over by looking up any metric of your game.

Yep that's a good source to reference. On top of that, they're a Japanese indie developer, not an American one. We've skirted around names to make sure they don't get sued by the various artists the series references.

I don't want my game to feature Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price.

Download blender, mmd_tools, some good mmd models, import them in blender and study how they're made. (convert the tris to quads to have a better idea about how the topology works, your normals may be fucked a bit but it doesn't really matter)
You can also watch this
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvgIVNDU-Dxjb3eukDF5W0l0-6ShO9OiM

Get the mmd tools from this repo, the original author stopped working on them

what could cause this?

The script checks for the angle between the player's up vector and the ground's normal and rotates him on the orthogonal vector to the up and normal vectors.

It's basically working but when you look north it will rotate you any way it can to make you look back south/west/east
>>
>>153269678
Not necessarily true, plenty of non-commercial games that use non-licensed IPs get C&D/taken down, especially if they have online components

You should skim through your code and all your functions and anything that could even be ambiguous. I'd go as far as even comment where the function gets called from.

I learned my lesson when I made a function with a bunch of local variables are aptly titled i v j t u and uu. Then have a shit load of operations happen and return uu
Then simply comment it //Some math shit for enemies

What the fuck did I mean by this.

I have a story about that. Also, general /what motivates you to do what you do?/ post. Was going to reply to a what motivates you post, but thread was archived before I could so here it is.

I spent four years learning and working on a project with a friend. When it was time to pay he ignored it and then stole the code and ran off with nothing to say. It was a very hard time for me. He also sent my personal information to everyone, which I don't care about because I'm an adult so it's not like anything is going to happen, but it's just the principle of it. It's just a dirty thing to do on top of everything else.

I didn't have backups and I lost all of the work I had done when my hard drive failed. I could have recovered it, but I didn't care.

Recently, I started back up with a new solo project to do what the original set out to do.

If I can lose everything I worked for for four years and then come back to do it again, clearly I care about the project so much that nothing can stop it. Motivation is fleeting, but for me I've been motivated for four years and even after that, the same amount, if not more, when I started.

I'm motivated by pure hatred, people saying I can't do it, by the fact that it's so difficult to do that no one has done it and when you look up how to start game developing everyone instantly crushes your motivations by telling you to make a simple 2D game.

I don't care about people stealing my idea because I literally had everything stolen and I still kept going. Besides, maybe I'm arrogant, but I KNOW that I'm the only one that can do it properly and no one else can or will, even when they literally have my shit.

Get rid of toxic friends too. They are a major source of your self doubt. Don't fail because someone else wants you to. This is one of the only, if not the only, mediums where you're able to fully express yourself and do ANYTHING you imagine. Don't hinder your potential because of other people.

Honestly, never trust "friends" no matter how much you like them. Business is business, always make contract and such but well done.

For example, my own brother want to make a game with me, but even so I am hesitating to do partnership without a contract because he has a GF and people with GF always listen to their snakes.

If in-game it does a really good difference in terms of damage, you can guess that 2.0 will be a huge boost

I have no experience but how I would design it is design one base room for each area.

Then populate rooms towards each area. If I feel like while making rooms that it is too close, I push the whole area farther away. Work on connecting one area to one other area. A > B > C > D > E > A.

Once you have that path linked, think about shortcuts from one area to another. Like C >E or C > A. Think about clever ways to make these shortcuts only accessible when you want it to. Maybe C > A is a one way path via a huge drop. Maybe you need a certain upgrade to go from C>E.

Then take a look at the rooms between areas. If there are any two rooms that are pretty close, consider connecting them and again limiting access via an upgrade or similar

etc..

I need some Unity audio help
Is it possible at all to have 3D reverb in Unity?
You know, like reverb that actually sounds like it's coming from a direction in 3D space.
Is there any hack or something to add a spread parameter to SFX reverb or something, so that it acts like it's actually coming from the audio source...? Because right now reverb has absolutely no directionality which in my case kind of entirely ruins the point.
I really don't want to do something like make wet reverb copies of all the audio clips which might be affected by reverb just to do this, since I've got a ton of them.

Try your best not to reinvent the wheel, seriously this is something most people don't seem to understand. You make games to be original not to show people a tech demo of what they already know (I'm looking at you 2D plat-former #234), think your game is original enough? Try something like Killer 7 and ask yourself how truly devoted to being original you're being. The wonder is in the art not the mechanics, you know you've truly made something new when someone can't tell if it's broken or not.

Also, is anyone taking good heed from this advice posts?
>>
>>153281972
Both would be best. I'm not an ideaguy, but being 1MA I can do both but neither really well.
If I had an extra coder I could focus on the art and if I had an artist I could focus on the code.
But yeah having both would be ideal so I could do a bit of both and leave the complex stuff to other people that are better than me.

Nah son. I'm making a 2d platformer because no one will make the game with a story I want.
>>
>>153281661
Yeah but that wouldn't really give the reverb effect I want.
To be more specific, my game takes place basically in a bunch of hallways. There's one character that wanders around and it's important for the player to hear his sounds without actually seeing him. So I'm doing all the audio spatial FX right now. For example, there's audio occlusion, like behind walls the sound becomes more muffled.
But I also need reverb, so, for example, the player can hear when this guy is in, perhaps, a hallway of a different material. But when I put reverb in the guy's audio mixer, the reverb just plays equally in both speakers and it doesn't consider the direction of the actual sound whatsoever. It kind of defeats the purpose of my game.

There's the obvious "protection" element to things like Torso, legs, helmet and gloves but other stuff has a long tradition in games like the aforementioned rings. I think I am making the choice tougher than it needs to be because I don't want to go back on the busywork that is inventory setup.
>>
>>153285668
Piercings aren't rings even if they can be ring shaped, they need full contact with flesh on their internal surface which piercings don't have. If magic rings are magic enough to give effects when worn as piercings then you could just wear 2000 of them in a backpack and get their power. Or 5 per finger.

there's essentially two types of gear slots - cosmetics and modifiers. ask yourself what type of cosmetics and stats/abilities/procs you want to tie to items and make a decision from that. i like fewer slots (less than 10) in a list or grid format, beyond that i caring about gear gets too tedious
>>

I want a game where all the slots are rings, and you can wear as many as you can fit.

Rings also have adjacency bonuses if two of the same rings are on the same finger. And obviously some rings are enchanted to never come off, or to slice off your fingers. Luckily some rings can make your fingers longer. I suppose some rings can neutralize the effects of neighboring rings too.

Three parts is the default starting point.

> Head
> Torso
> Legs

Doing one slot ruins the mechanic and removes focus on it. Good if you want to have inventory or something, but your game doesn't revolve around it.

Three slots is a perfect spot for most games.

Five slots (Head, Chest, Arms, Legs, Feet) can be the sweet spot if the game is more focused in that type of direction.

Six or more slots will destroy the mechanic unless done REALLY carefully and properly.

Also, never break them up. Don't have left and right sides of items. It almost never works out properly and just annoys the shit out of players.

Unity is primarily a 3D engine but it has some decent 2D functionality. However what might make it interesting for you are its Network capabilities. I don't like the elements being diagonal to each other. It's more annoying than I thought it would be.

Make them horizontal on top. I think that would make it perfect. Vertical would look weird and horizontal on bottom might work, but since this isn't an FPS game and it's this type of style, I think having them on top will be better. They're out of the way and it's easier to see the bottom of the screen, which I'm sure is more important than seeing the top.

Great looking game by the way. HUD fits perfectly with the style.

Is it okay to make manager objects in unity? Like to check if the player is ded, or if the room is cleared, things like this.
>>
>>153293728
No it's illegal.
>>
>>153293797
oh shi--
>>
>>153293728
No. Hieracrchies and Structure are Anti-OOP. In idiomatic OOP, each object has to handle all of its interactions with other classes itself. A manager class breaks the symmetry between an object and its dependencies, which can lead to spme weird interactions between classes.
>>
Recap man pls
>>
>>153293965
what?
It seems confusing af to have each object to handle its interactions.
>>
>>153293728
Both of those sound like functions to me, though. Don't turn verbs into nouns without very good reason.

Global state is generally bad, but it's somewhat necessary in Unity since you don't have a whole lot of freedom when it comes to code structure.

I was thinking of a manager object because it would keep checking and triggering other objects like : the room is cleared? ok then open all the doors, the player choose a door, ok , now move camera to new room and move the player to the center of it, things like that instead of every object check for a different thing they just send "messages" or set booleans..
>>

>>153292432
As this guy said, it looks like a carpet. You need to make it looks like a table, dunno how to word it rightly in english
>>
>>153294259
That's why it's called object oriented. Each object in the scene has to be oriented towards all of the other objects that it interacts with

I made a little screen for when you reach the end of the level.
I want to add more stats like how many dumplings you collected and how many you wasted.
Also how many secrets you found and how many out of x big coins you collected.
I made a timer that counts how long you take to complete the level.
The hud is now hidden unless you get hit or press back. It also visible when u enter a room.
I made a little world map.
Ledge grabbing is now slightly less buggy and I made a secret underwater passage.

>>
>>153294759
those are perfectly fine, they have a specific and narrow purpose that exists outside the scope of any single object they control. they could also be named appropriately instead of "manager", like "doorLocker"

the problem is when the "manager" object is actually managing other objects instead of the objects doing it themselves
>>
>>153295030
Please senpai explain me.

I would have to make each of these objects check for all the possible interactions with them? Like the player check if he is dead then HE calls the game over screen ? This looks confusing
>>
>>153295203
Not sure if you guys call it, but put some legs on it and define shadows in the texture so it looks like "3D" instead of a flat carpet
>>
>>153294759
>the room is cleared? ok then open all the doors
Yeah, I suppose you'd be hard-pressed to find a better way of doing this in Unity.

>the player choose a door, ok , now move camera to new room and move the player to the center of it
Why can't the player do this?

>>153295030
That's not right at all. Object-oriented means you are orienting your code around objects.
>>
>>153294238
DELETE THIS
>>
>>153295531
I mean you can do it the other way but then the dependencies aren't declared. Like, you don't know if the player object even CAN interact with anything else. If you give the manager class any responsibility, you're splitting up your dependencies and the player object isn't oriented towards all of its dependencies.

I'm also a fan of the Chrono Trigger-esque head/armor/weapon limitation, provided the armor bonuses are stats alone. If there is a visual aspect to it, then I like three armor slots over two. Better customization that way.

Anything above three is Morrowind-tier. Good at encouraging exploration, but a bit obnoxious and far out of the scope of a 1MA.

Guys I can't decide where I should go with my game's art style.
I'm making a game that uses low poly models, but when it comes to texturing I have issues.
So when I started I really wanted to make a game that used pixelart textures like in Megaman legends, so I tried making a model in that style (see pic related, very early model the final will be way different)
but somewhere along the line it ended up looking like YIIK (this is for reference: http://yiikrpg.com/)
I really don't wan't my model to look like this, the flat shading just doesn't work for me and it might conflict with my art direction later on.
However it seems to be a bit easier and would allow me to put out a concept demo faster.

Do it every day, even if you don't want to.

Start with a small project. FAR smaller than whatever you are thinking of right now. Pong is good. Breakout is good. Snake might even be too complex.

I don't reward myself with any of the things I like doing in my downtime unless I've devved for at least an hour every day, even days I've gone to work and pulled an 8 hour.

What is the common name for a logical grouping of game Entities?

For example, I imagine that each game state would have it own grouping and potentially more. I've seen Space thrown around. As well as Scene, but I think Scene has more implications coming from a Unity background? I'm not really sure.

I just want to make sure my vernacular is standard enough so people aren't confused when reading my code.

Does Unity have a limit as far as creativity goes? For example, can you create sex games, such as 3D SexVilla or whatever it's called. I looked it up and it seems fine, but I just want to make sure.

I know they have a weird thing about gambling, but I think that's in reference to real life gambling, not a game that contains gambling within it. Like how Grand Theft Auto has it, but a full gambling game wouldn't be allowed? I guess or it is, but requires special licenses.

Also, theoretically is one engine better than another? Does Unity have a limit in terms of power? Would you be able to make a Crysis 3 in it or a Witcher 3? As in a huge open world?

>Also, theoretically is one engine better than another? Does Unity have a limit in terms of power? Would you be able to make a Crysis 3 in it or a Witcher 3? As in a huge open world?

A general purpose tool will always be worse at performing a task than one built specifically for it. RedEngine3 was built specifically for Witcher 3's open world. Unity might be able to come close but it definitely won't hit the same framerate. (i.e. might be near unplayable without nasa hardware)

But that shit doesn't matter anyway because you're never going to make something on the scale of Witcher 3 or Crysis. Those games were made by hundreds of professional developers. Try making a pixel platformer first.

I'm trying to make a 2d fighting game but i've run into a little bit of a problem
I have an X,Y coordinate representing each player's location on the stage, but I'm not sure where I should be drawing the sprite relative to it
SF2's sprites seem to be "anchored" to the bottom left of the sprite, but I'm not sure how I'd deal with drawing the sprite when the character is facing left
I tried putting the coordinate on the bottom center of the sprite but that makes the sprite's feet go back during certain frames and fucks with animation. Any suggestions?

hard
there needs to be SOME form of authentication

I think what I'll do is have a recap form on the site, people can upload images and webms and write recap lines. Instead of "monthly" recap, the recap page will simply show the most recently updated projects first.

If I implement a form, then I can do a lot of things easier, like searching by title / dev, filtering based on tools used or languages used or genre, etc.

Form could be:
- Create new recap game
- Add entry to existing game

When you make a new game on the recap, just make a password, and when adding new entries supply that password. I won't implement password recovery.

Hi again, here's my progress update for the day. A quick list of changes since my last post:

- There are now doors, and they open/close when enemy waves start/end
- I also made arrows to point out where the doors you can go through are, in the final game there will actually be a door there in proper perspective
- Improved my wave spawning algorithm, now there's a 'randomize' function that makes enemies come from a random spawner between two spawner id's
- Behind the scenes, I implemented a secondary wider-view camera to zoom out for a map (not functional yet)
- Also added a function to delete a spawner after spawning, just in case i need to do that to create another with the same id

My game is starting to resemble a real video game now, I'm excited.

the game that the player is actually playing (jumping around as a box and hitting other players with boxes) should be completely divorced from what they see.

>>

Thanks! And don't worry, the only reason I'm working this fast is because I have no social life to speak of.
>>
>>153316575
Well, the reason I don't have a game yet is that I decided on the RPG features of my game before anything, and implemented them. I'm just now getting to gameplay, and I'm new to this whole netcode thing, so it's going pretty slow.
>>
>>153316243
I thought about doing that but was worried it was a hacky solution, I guess there's no other way though

>>153316308
Currently my engine has a point (representing the player's location) that all hitboxes and and sprites are drawn in comparison to (that little point under naoto in the image)
I was trying to find a way to draw sprites in OpenGL without having to have a large region of empty space around some sprites so that all sprites are the same size and can easily be drawn reltive to that point
>>
>>153316712
I am the opposite way haha, I started putting in my gameplay systems before I even knew what kind of game I wanted it to be. Different strokes, I guess.

Normally I would do that, but I had such a clear vision of how the gameplay should be that I didn't feel I needed to, and I was tired of how doing that, it almost felt like patchwork implementing the RPG system later, so I just did it first and hooked it into the action system.

Well I'm okay with doing something like Shantae but I have no idea what. Can\t even come up with an original theme where it would make sense for girls to be half naked. Shantae looks right, you don't question that she wears skimpy clothes, it just works and I don't know why. It's also not too lewd for some reason, I mean it's freaking 10+ rated and the girls pretty much run around in underwear in the game. That's something I would like to do, make a lewd game that's not lewd at the same time just like shantae.

That was pretty fun.

I was expecting the villagers to b able to step over that puddle that I couldn't.
Was kinda bumbed to see they couldn't either.

Losing points on death seems silly and confusing.
I *have* to die a set number of times before receiving my final score,
either start me at -400 or at 0, but don't demerit mandatory activities.

What's the Detective's kill animation?
Is that his face? Is that a lantern? I have no idea.
Getting staked by him on life 0 would be a nice touch.

Why do I distinctly get killed by the sun?
Getting partially crisped then running away on lives above 0 would be nice.

>- Somehow I broke obstacle's procedural generation
I assume this significantly altered the gameplay.
I pretty much only dragged the detective above the river, then spawn camped the villagers.
Making them spawn at whichever door is farther would make that way the hell less exploitable.

When I managed to grab 2 villagers on my way to the door I usually ended up with >25 villagers for the round.
Got 31 once. Never grabbed 2 on the way on level 5, unfortunately.

Anything with support for coroutines, either built-in or done yourself with delimited continuations (lambdas). Well, that's if you want to have animations and stuff on top of the purely turn-based logic. Otherwise, anything, really, but you want control over the main loop no matter what.

The boss that has always triggered me in Ys is Pictimos. I don't have issue with him anymore and I don't understand why I had so much trouble, however the second half of the fight was a nightmare the first time I played and I've never been so angry and stuck on a boss for so long in Ys because I couldn't deal with the bugs starting out. So whenever someone links Ys I immediately think Pictimos.

Cooperative multitasking. Essentially, they enable you to write the game logic so that it looks synchronous while it actually operates asynchronously, i.e. "blocking" while waiting for an animation to finish.

You can do the same with threads, but it becomes needlessly complex.

>When a shit opinion is reasoned out for you, you can generally know it's ok to throw it away because their reasoning isn't sound.
That's not how it works with anonymous shitters. They'll give you an opinion that seems perfectly reasonable while simultaneously trying to claw the eyes out of any dev or artist using pixelart, and you (usually) have no idea it's the same person. You can't trust the people behind anonymous posts but some of you act like anonymous posts are insured or some shit. It's just naive, stupid, and wrong. Well, once I have the basis I need, after a few simple practice games, I'd like to make a lighthearted Diablo-esque dungeon crawler. I've already vastly simplified the idea to reign the scope in a bit, but all the same, I'm marvelling at everything I'm going to need to learn. You guys are really incredible.

You start to appreciate a lot of different aspects of video games you didn't appreciate before. Especially of older games.

Everything besides progress posts is chaff here. There are no valid or honest opinions, opinions on 4chan are worthless, so arguing that this is some great source of honesty is a joke and makes you sound like wide eyed newfags who think 4chan is magical and everyone here is your friend. This is why you cry about normies and redditors and really want to believe you're on an island.

Glad you enjoyed it!
A lot of the issues you had with it have been worked on since that demo and the next one should be ready for Demo Day X
- Losing points when you die will no longer happen, Now score will start at 0 and there will be screen showing you your score and how you earned the points,
- Hunter's animation was supposed to be him holding garlic but it was pretty unreadable, So I already changed it for him holding a cross. I'm liking your ideas for the sun burning animation too
- There will be two houses and Villagers will spawn randomly between them now, to avoid exploiding their spawnpoint. Will work on wich door they will use to get out too.
- Procedural generation will only make the levels a litlle more varied and less repetitive. Bridges on the river and some of the obstacles will be at random places on each level. Hope I manage to fix it in time for DDX.
Thanks for the feedback!

The art is actually what I'm most trepidatious about, though very thankfully I have a talented artist friend whom I can get to help lighten the load a bit. I'm actually rather looking forward to fiddling with music and seeing if I can do that on my own.

As for coding, it relieves me a bit to hear you say that, though I'd honestly rather the coding be tough and the art be simple. I guess I'll tackle things as they come.

quaternions are pretty easy, its not like you need to touch the math behind them. you just need to know the basic rules

even then you can get a good intuition about how they work by looking at the unit circle and understanding that imaginary numbers can be used to represent rotation around a plane (quaternions just extend that concept)

I think the coolest thing OoE did was letting you equip two different weapons and rapidly alternate attacking with them, it was satisfying as all hell. But yeah I love when games add little touches where if you fall a long distance, the character reacts a different way when landing.

I am not a musician but my friend is a musician. Generally you want to have a pretty firm set of rules when creating music.

He charges by the minute and if the creator decides to change his mind and completely scrap a track and make a new one. He is still charged for the previous track even if he is not going to use. If he made 2 minutes of music to your specification, you are charged for 2 minutes of music.

You should really do something similar and make this known before he even accepts you. It's important because making 30 minutes of music and then having to completely scrap it to go in a new direction is not only a low blow but a waste of your time.

So /agdg/ I just got a job that pays a shit ton at facebook.

How much money should I save up for 2D art assets, for example if I wanted to make Prison Architect style assets, and as much art assets.

My sign-on bonus was like 60k (so i'll keep like half of it). Should I start to get assets now? How long would it take?
