It is year 2300. Game started on 2101, so we're 199 turns into the game.

I'm playing as University. I control the continent I started on. Early on we made the Peacekeepers to the north bend the knee, and become our diplomatic servant on a leash. The Hive was wiped out by the Spartans. We've allied with the Morganites due to our inclinations towards Free Market economics. The Believers have been getting their shit kicked in by the Spartans, after The Hive was taken down. The Gaians have been relatively untouched by anyone else, and so have thrived more than the other AI's, in the continent next door - we're currently engaged in a Vendetta by them, of their own doing.

All that said, however, University has maintained a steady lead on every aspect of the game this time. I started learning the basics on how I should exploit my formers, and how to use Supply Crawlers at a basic level. I also learned more about balancing funds betweern Econ, Psych, and Lab. It's at 30/30/40 right now and it seems to be working out great. Helps a lot managing the drones. Have been grabbing a bunch of the useful Secret Projects, and I have fairly nice main cities with a few secondary ones that are either for prototype building mostly, or coastal.

About 50 turns ago we first got acccess to the Needle Jets. Holy shit, they're a tide turner. Since I started experiencing major troubles at home with indigenous lifeforms, I got the idea of prototyping jets with 1/1/12 but with bonus Psi Attack. I keep two at every base and the results have been majestic. I really love this prototyping mechanic.

Since we're in a Pact with Lal and Morgan, we almost have the votes to be elected Supreme Leader in the council, but not quite. Need 2/3. So I guess I'm gonna keep riding the tech lead and see where it takes me. Probably a Transcendence victory but we'll see. Really excited.

Witches indeed one of the better classes, but I'm mildly disappointed with their low Magic value. I have 6 of them (including an Orc Witch and a Baba Yaga) and only 1 has higher Magic than 5. (They're between level 6 and 9.)

Inventor, however, surprised me in a positive way. She might be a little fragile without additional protection, but she's really versatile and can easily be a jack-of-all-trades with a few trinkets and whatnot.

I don't understand why everyone complains about it being cartoony. Civ has always been cartoony, Civ V is the odd one out and had the most realistic-looking leaderheads in the series.

That's not to say that I wouldn't prefer them to keep the same style as they had in V, but it's silly to give them flak for doing what they've been doing for almost every single previous Civ game.

I don't know what all the hubbub about it is, I prefer the new art style as it has a clear defined direction. Civ 5 I felt the Leader Models were really just caught between cartoon and realism and ended up stuck in the uncanny valley. I think a more cartoonish is style is more appropriate for Civ anyways.

I've been meaning to give a huge earth map with real start locations a go for years now but I never got around to it. Maybe one last game before VI comes out. It's in my opinion way better than Stellaris.
First, research isn't random.
Second, you research by building stations, but you don't have a lead scientist monopolizing all the research by himself.
Third, you can also build resort station that can give you so many brouzoufs you don't know what to do with them.
Fourth, you can add research laboratories on frigate, put some advanced sensor on them, and use them to spy on your neighbour while research how to make stuff deader (that requires some tweaking with the fuel).
Fifth, unlike Star Ruler, a ship going out of fuel won't kill it. It'll be just fucking slow.

It's not bad, I just feel that it's a step down compared to V. Most of it is because they got rid of having detailed backgrounds and opted to just having the leader model imposed over a static image. They lost so much personality compared to the leaders in V:

Yeah I know, in the base game they're not really all that different from each other compared to SMAC and stuff, that's why about 5 of the mods actually make it so they feel a lot more different and play differently. That's the entire point I was trying to make, I applied a dozen different mods at the same time to make the game actually feel fresh again. At least temporarily.

I try running a single mod and not even that will work.

For example; I try using Triumphant Heroes (which only adds some custom-made heroes) all by itself. I place the .taf in UserContent and the Launcher detects it and puts it on the list, as well as placing the .taf inside a folder with some .acp and a .xml files, yet when I run the game none of these heroes appear.

I also try running Age of Wardrome, yet I still can't choose whatever clothing I want when creating/editing custom heroes.

It's pretty frustrating, since I can't find anything on the internet that points to other people having this same problem.

What is it with BE health? Huge swathes of the game remain uncolonized because health is so hard to get up. Each city has positive health but the global health after a little warring and expansion is like -40.

in BERT health is too easy to get and there is too much land to settle and too little competition for the best spots. the 4 health per deal trait can give you an easy 20 health really early, and paean can mostly erase unhealth going into the mid and lategame. even without those you can nearly erase unhealth early on with a few of the prosperity virtues.

Spawn is not the best expression. Crafting materials not only influence the quality of a building, but certain ones have bonuses to attract specific creatures (e.g. Sandstone / Clay = Beasts, Gold = Dwarfs, Enchanted Bone = Demons, Dark Wood = Goblins, etc.)

Every turn there's a possibility that somebody join your town - you can influence this through planned building. The Cabbage Field has +1 Attract Children (and might +1 Attract Human) even with the worse materials, but you can easily pump it up or customize to your liking.

Keep in mind, you "only" has 10 slots. I prefer buildings that unlock extra classes, minus the Archery (Hunter) and Manger (+10 skill to children-turned-to-Gatherers, +Beast attraction). Blessed Tree Symbol / Blessed Paths is useful but there's better options, it's mostly extra comfort.

I'm 239 comfy turns in without any problems on Normal. Just finished my hardest fight, lost my first man against a bunch of Shades. I haven't even bothered with crafting that much (which, as I see now, can be powerful), only got it into lately as I almost ran out of building slots. What was your problem?

I find it challenging mostly because the wandering monsters making it risky to gather, knowing what to gather, knowing when you are powerful enough to reasonably complete a quest, how you advance and get better stuff in general. I mean you can research a material, but how do you get a party out and gather it without everyone dying?
Also how do I balance parties so I'm ready for all sorts of encounters?

First of all, make sure to pick a suitable Deity (mine is Veles), Warrior as unit focus at start (new players tend to live 2× longer with this) and make sure to get the most out of your starting environment. Always consider first what's near and available (e.g. you have constant resupply).

As for risks, skulls above enemy's meant to represent difficulty: 1 / 2 starts are a walk in the park and even 3 is usually a safe win. Actually going out either to discover or gather is extremely rewarding, I barely spent any training points to materials / items until I had 9 unlocked buildings.

Why? Because loot got me covered in every way. Weapons, armour, crafting materials etc. My discovery party consists 3 Warriors / 1 Medic / 2 Intellectual / Hex types. My Gathering parties (who tend to stay near Ostoya) follow a similar pattern, only fill these roles much more loosely.

When it comes to quests, I suggest saving right before entering a building. Usually, you can come back 3 times to a house / dungeon etc., though the MQ tend to have 1-shot locations. Certain tasks need specific parties (e.g. to cure a Baba Yaga you need a lot of Hex), but that's rare.

Honestly, once you understand the how the card game works (especially that alternative methods are always preferred, the worst that can happen is that you have to fight). For me, it was also important to not rush the game and have a healthy supply of everything but it's not mandatory.

Shit, meant to say in the last line: once you understand how card game works, it'll be a lot easier to feel your limits and build up a strategy. Also, here's my starting location: I believe I was lucky, as I have several valuable materials close to my town. I have dedicated parties to them.

We're living on Mushrooms and Wood since day 0. Then as it was in 1-turn reach, I started using Clay / String to build shit and Fish / Seaweed / Fruit (all were unlocked by default) to diversify both my crafting options and food supply. Wicker was the first I unlocked if I recall correctly.

There's also a Granite / Iron deposit up North (couldn't fit in the pic): the first was useful as an alternative to Clay but since I needed access to another metal I unlocked Gold and started mining as you can see. During this period , Leathers (esp. Scaled) from loot served me pretty well.

Next step was switching to Elven Wood for extra options then lately Ancient Wood as a base of superior weapons b/c it's extra poison damage. All of these because they were relatively close, so I can always resupply. Meanwhile extra materials from loot were fantastic to craft single items.

Space combat should be more refined than death ball vs death ball, especially more control over the fleets, like why can't I tell my ships to fly away when they are faster than the enemy fleets? I actually would like to be able to micromanage battles... Imagine if you could destroy jumpdrives and weapon system and then board + capture ships.

Planetary sieges should offer an orbital bombardment which just wipes out every POP on the planet over time. Literally a genocide, but only for xenophobe/militaristic. Should have a chance to block tiles with nuclear wasteland. Should be able to surrender planets which are under siege to avoid damaging them, like cities open the gates to invading armies IRL

Economy is extremely simple with just credits and minerals. I wish there were more resources that actually matter (crystals for laser/shields, nuclear material for nukes, generic minerals for constructing ships and buildings, some consumer goods which will boost/decrease happiness based on how many you have, etc). Food should not be as big a deal and surplus food should boost happiness on the planet or 50% of the surplus should be distributed to other plants.

The AI just needs to get better. Sector management AI, everything the AI empires are doing etc.

More meaningful diplomacy, like espionage. E.g. finding out the enemys ships config before you go to war so you can change your ships to counter them, stealing research, getting vision over their units, support rebel movements, etc.. Better trade deals and research agreements.

War demands and peace negotiation should be reworked. Should be a mix of EU4 and Hoi4 peace conference.

More internal politics, especially multiple species empires should be able to set policies for every species.

More freedom with the ship designer. Ships should just have a size = amount of module slots and you can put in engines, power gen, weapons, shield, armor, sensors, aruas

Yeah this is something that would improve the game a lot I think.

Would help trade a lot.
Like how you can sell a lot of more basic minerals for crystals so you can build lasers.
Simply having Mineral X, Mineral Y, would make it better imo, but you can do much better than that.

I'd possibly want something like production from civ5.
So you can have a mining world, but then you have a different manufactoring world which actually produces the stuff.

I like how fallen empires no longer prevent playstyles. But I'm not sure about the whole idea where they had Fallen Empires not doing anything at all. Whenever they talk about the development process surrounding the game it creates this mysteriously disorganised, rushed atmosphere. Wiz seems really passionate for the games, and even if you think his direction is bad its better than the boring-bad that other project leads try and push.

He still suffers from that "EU4/CK2/HoI4 had this mechanic so it should be in!." mindset that usually ruins gameplay.

The idea of them making requests/demands of you is really neat and sounds like it's going to be loads of up.

I'm just still butthurt that I can't build ringworlds. They really need to add more end-game tech, like buildable ring worlds, stuff like Dyson swarms and Death Stars, etc.

lets see if I can push out some tips:

gathering is most effectively got the first character in line only, the following ones only contribute 50% (same for crafting)
for that reason I prefer to send out small groups of 3~4 people to gather resources... **IF** the area is safe, depending on your gatheres and equipment they could easily protect weaker creatures
so what I ended up doing in early game is clear out my village surroundings, nests and whatnot, this makes it mostly safe
then I walk and explore during day and camping the whole night gathering resources, this is mostly safe early game until the big monsters start to appear

its always useful to craft and build stuff, research points are the most valuable thing in game, after your characters of course...
always try to craft meals, as they are more cost efficient and lighter to carry, always try for variety too, the food variety bonus are huge
crafting of jewelry and special items is pretty good too, specially because those are rare to find loot, they give pretty varied bonus and also valuable research when crafting

the tower building is pretty useful, specially with good materials, as that sight range goes through the night as well, other buildings are useful too, some seem to carry their bonuses to everyone, not only the village

so for your main explorer party, always try to be varied with people, I carry my warrior, hunters, medic, sage, and even some gatherers to help out,
like the other anon said, challenges besides fight are usually the way to go (though I think fight gives more loot), and that is, considering if you have the right people for the challenge in question
once difficulty rises (I think it tops at turn 100), the big monsters start to appear... and yeah >>153285594 they are horrific

the galaxy is very small. Just about every other species is Humans-with-a-mask. Every other planet is a different US State instead of something alien. Even robots don't even go on barren planets. That said, I like the idea that fallen empires will be so advanced that you'll never really be able to catch up in 300-500 years of playtime, but tech is so boring and unambitious.

Yeah, it's a bummer there's no up-to-date Wiki(a) to see what do you need for different results. Even the devs' own Wiki (at their official site) is totally unreliable, so your best bet is to try to figure out the best outcome from what you have in stock.

As I said, I only relied on buildings at early stages. Now that I have a few weapon / armour options unlocked (simply because I ran out of slots), I see that Research Points can be reliable acquired though crafting too. High-end stuff often gets 15-20 (!) RP to the table per item.

BTW I haven't figured out what triggers the appearance of higher level creatures. My tip is beaten enemies - I found a 3-skull nest in an area, destroyed it, then in the next turn another 3-skull nest AND a 5-skull Raider Lair appeared in a few tiles away from it. I'm sure they weren't there before.

I actually don't want these things to be buildable desu.
Stellaris already suffers too much from all star systems being generic, and there being no real reason to go to war other than 'muh 40% win condition'. Partly because there's no such thing as 'a really juicy system that you want to control for strategic purposes'.
The only exceptions to this are maybe strategic-resource systems if you don't already have one of that kind (although the bonuses aren't actually that good), and ringworld systems that are just nice to take for meme purposes.
Now if you let me BUILD ringworlds, I have even *fewer* reasons to ever DoW anyone for territory-control reasons.

As an aside I kinda dislike the idea for flavour reasons too. I like there to be giant, awe-inspiring "How did they do this, we can't comprehend it with our current technology" stuff in the galaxy even in 2500 when you hit the top of the game's tech tree. Fallen Empires are supposed to be millions of years old, aren't they? Seems kinda dumb that you could get on senpai's level in just 300 years.

The space layer in BERT is indeed underwhelming but I could never see the space layer being a thing when there is ground and sea already. I mean, for one, putting resources or tile effects into space sounds pretty stupid.

In any case, satellite coverage around every Firaxite tile plus the teleporter has allowed me to pull off some silly victories by putting LEV destroyers within striking distance of a rival planetary wonder. It's very niche, yes, but when you have the resources to abuse it, ooooh boy....

The government which governs the land and enforces the laws, such as not stealing other people's legal property, would then, hopefully, enforce the law and force the person who stole my desk to return the desk, and then they would be punished for breaking the law of the land. This then provides incentive for other people to not steal my shit, because if they get caught then they get punished. Hence, I own my desk.

Someone in Canada could see a picture of my desk and claim to own it. There is literally nothing stopping them from doing so, but as very, very few people would support them in this claim, and they have virtually no way of enforcing this claim, they don't have ownership of my desk. Perhaps to them they do, but that is irrelevant, because they are delusional. If, however, they were to fly over here, come into my house, kill me, take my desk, and go live in a cave with my desk, the desk has become theirs, in a sense, as they now possess it. However, the law doesn't recognize this as legal ownership, and the nation has the backing of tens of millions of people who have a vast amount of power compared to one guy in a cave. Ownership does NOT imply something cannot be taken from you, that's a ridiculous claim.

Take it from someone who plays Pdox games regularly. Stellaris isn't going to be good until we're several DLC's down the road. This is the way every single las one of their games has worked, with maybe the exception of EU2, CK1, and Vicky1, which each only need one or two expansions to be decent. Since EU3, Pdox games are shitty, buggy, messes, with loads of potential but little substance. After a few years I think Stellaris will be a real gem, but having to wait to get there sucks.

Looks like I'm FINALLY getting the hang of it. Sending a gatherer with the warrior really helped, I have a lot of iron and coal.
Going full screen and being able to read the villagers' stats really help. I don't know why, but the game worked in a small 1024x768 window.

I could see that working. They could start with like, 5 strength, so they're basically scouts but without the ability to scout. They could become stronger as you got key technologies, like bronze working could increase their strength to 7, iron working could put it up to 9, when you get gunpowder maybe up to 13 or something, 18 with rifling, etc. Course I put like 10 seconds of thought into that so that's probably not actually balanced, but you know what I mean. They could be slightly more expensive than normal workers too, and become more expensive when they get upgraded maybe. It would certainly be a nice civ bonus to not have your workers get captured by a 90% dead squad of spearmen when they could just be carrying around guns and at least have a chance to run one hex back into town.

Early game warmongering AI on higher difficulties are insane. They'll have 40 units, 8 cities, positive gold and happiness, be ahead of you in tech and the only thing you can do about it will cripple you in the long run.

Best case scenario, you pull a military win out of your ass and keep pushing until Rome stonewalls you and you win a diplomacy victory in the atomic era while Woozy is building spaceship parts.

Yeah not sure how you could mod that in a satisfying way.

Maybe a weird way you could mod it is where you landing an army on a planet, spawns a "fleet" in a hidden empty star system(could just paint the background grassgreen even) where the defending force also spawns.
Not sure how you can work terrain and such in.

There are nebulas with slower movement, but that's the galaxy map, not the star map.

Reworked construction ship could function as a combat engineer, then you have a few "planets" you can attach defensive stations too. The planets could be named strategic hill or whatever.

Second, at the RTS level, RoN has "good" diplomacy, some are just FFA or defined in the match configuration, RoN at least allows you to interact in between war, peace, alliance and defensive pact (if i remember right).
Third, you should also keep in mind that the Thrones and Patriots expansion (if i recall right, the vanilla does not have that part) you can play a semi GSG with slightly better diplomacy where you have points gained acording to you empire and need to spend them for improving your provinces, do diplomatic actions (like going to war) and buy cards to use agains your enemies.

I went up to 5 worlds pretty quick.
Then I started placing frontier outposts for resources once I reached cap influence.

A lot of improvements can be done there.


On my first game I had a few worlds that were specifically for producing troops.

Uplifted Earthbound(+20% Army Damage) and added Strong(+20% Army Damage)+Thrifty to them.
So their worlds were military/energy worlds.

Now that Very Strong is only 3 points you can get up to 60% Army damage from traits with uplifted earthbounds.

Some other slight army bonuses would be nice.
Like if Hostile Fauna increase Army Health by 5%.
Bleak gave +10% Morale Damage.

If tropical troops fought better on tropical worlds a large empire could aim for getting a military world of each type.

I think I'd rather want some of those modifiers to work like auras though.

Yes they are, you're just too simple to see it.

Players use roads in war to transport troops, that player has to use military units to protect them or the opposing player can snipe them and halt the advance.

You can hurt other civs in the early game by taking out their workers, or even stealing them for yourself.


You're acting like civ is a game of sim city and therefore you are unable to see the fairly obvious ways workers tie into war.

I've played maybe 2000 hours of Civ V, and I guarantee you at least 400 of that was telling workers where to go. And maybe... 5 hours of that was using them for clever tactical purposes sniping city states or moving them back from the border before a DoW. Rather than "Select. Pan map. Farm icon. Click tile. Next. Pan map. Mine icon. Click tile. Select. Nothing to do at the moment, skip turn. Repeat x10"
The fact that there are occasional tactical uses does not make up for the immense, tedious, artificial-game-length-mechanism they are for 95% of their lives.
I'm not asking to remove improvements. I just don't want to have to be dicking around with a pseudo-army of teamsters every single fucking turn of my game in order to place them.

Big planet modifiers to buff specific species types, maybe something like "Giant thermals, +25% happiness to avians, -10% habitability to everyone else", or "Hypnotic magnetosphere, +25% happiness to synths, -10% habitability to everyone else"

More set-piece special systems to fight over. Basically just more places in the style of Sanctuary. Maybe an "Antimatter star" where every body in the system has like 20 energy and 20 phys research or something. Or a "naked singularity", a once-a-galaxy star type that gives mad events. I'd also like "wanderer planetoids": systems that don't have any stars in them at all, but have special ejected-into-interstellar-space planets where you can research special physics techs because you have access to a world far from any stellar background noise. Basically I want more very rare techs that are tied to your territory control, not just the strategic resource ones.

Well, it kind of makes sense, if you think about it. Supreme Commander goes from 150 units per player to 1500. If the buildings didn't count, you could just turtle all you want and the others players wouldn't be able to penetrate your defense.

I was in a normal war with the Pelx-Cradonians, and then during that I got a rebellion by the Ozkox, who I had annexed a few years back and they were getting uppity.
But because Paradox didn't bother to playtest, I infer that the rebellion tried to trigger by creating an empire of every possible government type, simultaneously, in the same place, which then just nullified itself so nothing actually happened at all. Apart from the 500 million popups.

Hold on now Anon, I'm going to have to disagree. When I march for war I usually rig up a couple of battlestations with those interdiction modules. I usually keep a fleet in reserve during the start of the war to catch enemy assaults before sending them on to the front, and whilst the stations can't kill the enemy they can hold them down long enough for a proper ass-kicking. I find them invaluable for fights against hyperlane-capable ships or to catch construction ships trying to build wormhole generators.
I also notice that a couple of those stations are 5.4 instead of 5.5. Not being rude, but are you remembering to upgrade them?

Here, you have five ENTIRE FORTS coming to clean an independant Frythan lair :

Independant frythans lair are a pain in the ass because they spawn with a few units in them that are passive. Therefore, they very quickly outrain you, which means that any attempt to destroy them means fighting 5-6 frythans with a maxed combat experience.

Interestingly enough, you can set the game so that destroying (or assimilating if you're playing as a frythan) these lairs is the main objective.
For humans players, killing frythans gives you money and reputation, which attracts heroes.

I can imagine it was Ed Beach's decision, because she's right from the period where both of his amazing board games are from, and also she's tied into the whole age of exploration theme that he says the game has.

She also provides a different sort of gameplay for France based more on diplomacy on espionage rather than culture and military. We'll probably get both Louis and Nappy though, even if it's as DLC, so it's not that much of a worry.

Not always possible, but send merchants to places ADJACENT to your home node and redirect trade to that node. Use ships to boost trade power in those nodes and your home node. You automatically collect from the home node so merchants are not necessary there unless you are a very small nation where every little bit of extra power counts.

Depends on the year. When you just get artillery it's rather pointless in actual battles, having two or three in a stack for sieging is mainly it. If you can afford it you should be using 10 / 4 / 4 builds early on. Cavalry is extremely powerful during the shock phase but doesn't do anything unless it can actually hit the enemy. Later artillery (3-4 pips in fire and above) are strong and you should have a healthy number even in non-siege stacks - the 10/4/4 build I posted is only if you can afford it, if you can't early on just use 5/2 stacks and multiples thereof. If you have spare dosh but not enough for artillery having a stack of 4-6 cavalry to obliterate enemy stacks is useful. Keep reserves, don't throw everyone into battle at the same time - at the end of a meatgrinder, fresh troops can be a huge difference because wounded regiments are weaker than their number suggest - a 70% regiment actually fights at something like 55% of its power.

Offensive, Defensive, and Quality are all valid early choices for a boost to your military power. Administrative and Economic are also good all-around.

Here's how a combat layout looks from your side given the 10/4/4 build on 10 combat width on both you and the enemy:

A = Artillery

Cavalry is extremely expensive early game and generally bad at taking hits. They also get a malus to damage and defense if they don't have enough supporting infantry, the actual ratio varies from culture to culture - Euros need 2 inf for each cav, the Mongols and steppe tribes need none at all. Cavalry needs to be able to hit the enemies and has 2 flanking range, meaning it can hit the person in front of it and two to either left or right: the cav in positions 1 and 10 can hit up to 3 and 8, respectively.

Early infantry is inferior in damage to cavalry but can take hits better and is much cheaper so you can field far more. They also don't have any malus if too many cavalry die. As you can see, there are reserve infantry in the back line so even if equal amounts of cavalry and infantry die you'll never get the malus for cavalry. Infantry only has 1 flanking range, meaning the infantry will never be able to hit the cavalry in positions 1 and 10 until their own cavalry has been completely defeated and their infantry reserves come in.

Early Artillery is poor at defeating enemies, but has the exceptional ability to fire from the back line unlike both infantry and cavalry - in essence, artillery adds to the combat width. It also can't be targeted in the back line, even by enemy artillery. It only does damage during the fire phase and helps to reduce the damage done to infantry in front of it during that phase, which becomes important when gun-wielding infantry show up who have fire pips. You don't need too many because when artillery first becomes available, they're too weak to kill many and gun-troops aren't extant.

If too many infantry or cavalry die and there are more artillery than the total of infantry and cavalry, artillery goes onto the front line. They take double damage and do much less when they're on the front line, so you need to avoid this at all costs.
If you're losing a battle badly it's not always a bad idea to order a retreat, because weakened units do far less damage than normal and are more vulnerable.

Morale is VERY important in early battles, because lethality is generally low. Higher morale also means higher morale damage to the enemy and low morale troops will flee before they're dead. Morale is affected by a bunch of factors including army tradition, discipline, technology and idea groups.
Discipline adds a multiplier to morale and damage dealt while tactics adds to damage dealt and reduces damage taken. Tactics can't be affected by ideas or anything as far as I remember but is increased with technology - since it affects both defense and offense, it only comes into play when two sides have different values for them.
Good leaders are very important throughout the game. Terrain is also important and terrain that lowers combat width is ideal for holding out against larger armies with shoddier troops since very few can attack at a time - you might lose but you've bought time.
Armies that have been flanked, meaning their total width is less than the enemy's total width, take more damage on the flanks and can often collapse from the flanks mimicking the historical 'roll the carpet'. This is why it's important not to engage enemy armies that are significantly larger than your own on very open terrain.
River and strait crossing penalties are significant but can be bypassed if you have a higher maneuver general than the enemy. High maneuver also lets you move a little faster.

It mostly has to do with % chances to get higher techs. Since you're not guaranteed to get the next level of your weapon the sane thing to do is focus on things you have reasonable chance to get.
Like those UV beamers you're researching, Hivers only have 40% chance to get them so you got lucky. But after that it's only 50% to get phasers. Hivers have the best % for ballistics of any race so usually you go for those.

There are actually substantially fewer AI types than there are possible ethoses, even in vanilla Stellaris.

In fact the things you would EXPECT to alter AI personality - ethics and type of government - don't. Those just give opinion bonuses/maluses to neighbours who share them. AI's personality is just that "Fanatical Purifiers", "Honourbound Warriors", "Federation Builders" stuff.

I distinctly remember the dev diarys saying they did that to make it "clearer" to the player how an AI empire will behave, put personally to me it's highly unintuitive that a neighbour with the same philosophy and politics as me should nevertheless hate me due to some magic set-in-stone reichgeist that spawned at the start of the game and is totally impervious to change.

I really want to like Stellaris but the limited AI types is kind of a bummer. At least with this mod I could play as space hippies who get super butthurt at other nations who have unlimited bombardment (because of ecological damage, not for pacifistic reasons). Shame the AI may not behave the same way.
