So, Spain looks pretty awesome!

It's cool that they've incorporated Portugal's ability from Civ V. Spain has bonuses to Faith, Gold, naval combat, and Science. I'm really eager to play them.

So, I've heard that Greece might have two leaders -- does that imply that all civs will, or have I heard incorrectly?
>>
>>152991084

as far as we know it's just Greece in Vanilla, with inevitably the rest coming via updates or more likely (((dlc)))
>>
>>152991472
That seems weird.

The inclusion of 'leader abilities' makes me think that they would include more leaders per civ at launch.

It might just be a last-minute surprise.
>>

>So, I've heard that Greece might have two leaders -- does that imply that all civs will, or have I heard incorrectly?

Two different civs afaik.

Sparta and Athens.

Two different versions of Greece?

Why?
>>
>>152992642
One could say the same thing when looking at the celts and england.
Why two different version of united kingdom?

Greece wasn't a country back then.
Neither was the united kingdom.

Modern greece covers the geographical area of Sparta and Athens today though.
Just like the UK covers the geographical area of England and the Boudican Celts.
>>
>>152991084
>So, Spain looks pretty awesome!
It was weird to me that Spain only hit Civ V in a DLC pack.

In a list of the top ten most influential nations to have ever existed, Spain would rank... what? 3rd or 4th? They held dominion over most of Central and South America and had one of the largest empires the world has ever seen.

Could be nice as a setup mechanic.

Even having a few different UUs to pick from and such, like slots.

Say you're america you have the leader slot that you have a few options for, you have the district slot where you have two options, and so on.

>More options are better than fewer, yes?
Not necessarily.
Quality over quantity, depth over width.

With too many options you might just feel overwhelmed and don't pick anything at all.

Finding ressources is a pain, though.

Hey guys, after playing about 40 hours of Stellaris on the first patch, I set it aside to wait until it gets fun.

Has it done so yet?
>>
>>152997743

>>
>>152997309
>Finding ressources is a pain, though.

yeah, that game has a tendency to put resources comically far away. I have to say though, the amount of play choices and the lore is really nice
>>
>>152997954
Is there actually any good mods yet? I got probation from Paradox forums but it seems like the ones on the Workshop are all kind of shit, and the archive is just a bunch of numbers.
>>
Tried playing my first Stellaris game the other day. Thought I was doing okay until I encountered eight other races in quick succession and they were all listed as overwhelmingly more powerful than I was. I made some dumb choices early on for my species, like being generally unlikable, so everyone hated me too. A few hours later I'd managed to equalize in the middle of the power scale somewhere, but that's about where I stayed since I was boxed in and couldn't expand without warring and the game basically stopped moving entirely for the next four hours.

Any recommendations or tips for good traits and flaws for the race? A good way to play so I don't fall behind the curve? Should I lower the number of races in the galaxy so the map isn't a cluttered, squashed mess of tiny empires?
>>
>>152997982
Maybe. But so far I'm having problem finding each villagers are wounded, because the gathering/crafting screen doesn't say which one is wounded.

And expeditions are really shit at gathering ressources. Unless I'm playing wrong.

Are expeditions supposed to just murder shit, or going around and gathering rare shit?

are you using the right type of villager on the right resources, for example gathers on wood? Also if I'm not mistaken you can build tools that makes them gather more

>Are expeditions supposed to just murder shit, or going around and gathering rare shit?
depends, if there is a billion monsters spawning right outside the village you should clear the spawns so you can gather in relavtive peace. Otherwise I prefer to explore ruins and such

That's what we're getting. Multiple leaders have been confirmed, and even if they hadn't everything about the game implies it.

Thinking of playing as space elves.

Then modifying my elves ot become the perfect leaders.

Also planting Dwarves and such that can be modified into perfect miners/soldiers and so on.

May not need unique baselines for all of the others.
Only Goblin is done so far, but it shares the baseline with Humans and Gnomes at least.

Total Racial Points can go up to 4.
So dwarves and elves technically have 1 trait point to spare.
Maybe charismatic for dwarves, to boost happiness of halfling farmers on the mining worlds.
Having 1 spare point is nice for changing world preference though.

>>
>>153003064
Shame high tier units are too good.
I think the powerlevels between tiers would be more okay if you could have more units in each stack so you can overwhelm the stronger units.

Having a swarm of goblin musketeers with a few flame tanks was fun, less fun knowing that I could win much more easily if I just grabbed a stack of juggernauts.
>>
>>153003313
My problem with the tiers is that you tech up way too quickly so there is no room for any t1 or even most t2.

Something like this I think.
Shame when I genemod the main species(elves), they won't count as the main species anymore.
Otherwise I could use the "only main species as leaders" to keep the leader pool cleaner.

1 Spare points on non gobbos, so I can change world preference I guess.

I want mixed planets so nomadic is useful.
Ideally I'd colonize with a halfling ship.

Collectivist-Xenophile probably.
Collectivist so I can purge if necessary, xenophile for the happiness bonus on the mixed planets.

>>153034578
Depends on what you want out of it.

It's pretty simplified compared to other 4x games, but I don't consider that a bad thing.
Combat is automatic or real-time based on what you choose, and for some guys this is a deal breaker. The presentation though is top-tier since they were able to hire a bunch of big name voice actors for the faction leaders. Mark Hamill, Robert Englund and the guy who played Q in Star Trek all voice faction leaders. The GNN broadcasts are full voiced too. Oh, and Michael Dorn(Worf) does the narrating, but a good chunk of his stuff sounds pretty phoned in.

Don't feel bad about pirating it either, since Wargaming makes more than enough money of that shitfest that is World of Tanks.

So a few major things have happened. One shipyard has reached a slipway capacity of 100k which is quite impressive. The second commercial shipyard finished a second slipway and is now working on a third while at the same time constructing additional freighters.

Since Mass Drivers work exceptionally well with Automated Mines on comets, the board has decided to exploit this functionality. At the moment our industrial queue is overloaded with other facilities but when the time comes, a fleet of freighters can haul the mines over to be constructed and act as remote, always-on sources of resources.

In the meantime, various other empire activities have been going on, nothing of terrible note. Apparently an officer was diagnosed with terminal cancer.

A couple research labs are open, and after some deliberation and a bit of math, the director's have ordered research into stronger EM sensors. The outcome of better sensors increases would increase the range of every suite used on our ships by nearly a THIRD as opposed to increasing just the strength which would allot a mere ten percent increase.

Meanwhile, the rest of the empire putters along soundly. Yet another commercial shipyard is under construction in anticipation of a hopefully vast private network of freighters. It is an investment into the future.

The director's had a 'brilliant' idea; why not re-organize the army, and train a few construction brigades to set the basics up on Mars first?
In hindsight it is an obvious solution, which I have put into motion. First it will require some Brigade HQs and research into Divisional HQs but that will come in time. Right now, there's still the issue of Uridium and Gallicite depleting in just over five years.
I expect asteroid mining with mass driver delivery will maintain our production for now.

However, my ambitions are set on Venus. A cruel world, but it can be tamed with time and effort.

I just hate everything about the UI and the art style.
Yeah it's early 3d but jesus fucking christ does it have to look like I'm playing an N64 title?
The UI is before 'UX' was really a thing so its understandable that's it would be clunky but it is really, really atrocious.

I know its false, but I do like to shitpost about Civ3 being better anyways

I've subsidized the only private shipping industry quite a lot over the years but they haven't built a single ship.

Do I need to put construction brigades on Mars for them to actually move the parts there? Or am I retarded and still missing something?

Nothing reddit about it, Gandhi went nuclear in civ 2 because of how aggression levels were programmed (he was so peaceful his aggression level went negative in the middle of the game, which caused it to actually overflow to the maximum possible amount, making him the most aggressive AI by far), and they just kept him like this afterwards.

I spent 10 turns bombarding Rio with 3 trebuchets and when that wasn't enough I got so desperate I started throwing longswordsmen at it (supported by siege towers) and I still didn't get any closer than this. I had to abort once I ran out of melee units to protect the trebuchets with.

No, seriously. I'm a huge fan of the haunted house kind of horror movie, and I loved Dead Space's first minutes. Haunted houses, haunted ships, haunted spaceships... I like it.

Plus there's something refreshing when supernatural is mixed with sci-fi. It's spookier, because even with all the scientific progress, you still can't avoid or destroy ghosts. Spooooky.

And then the writers go full retard and explain the ghost are actual beings from another dimension or they just spoook people to save them from ghost or some shit because the writers don't understand some times leaving stuff unexplained it better

Strategy Wiki has very good articles on Alpha Centauri, including strategies for all of the factions:

http://strategywiki.org/wiki/Sid_Meier's_Alpha_Centauri/Factions

Some named landmarks should be prioritized for base building, since they give very important bonuses. Resource bonus squares and monoliths are always useful as well. You can build a lot of bases before running into the overexpansion penalty (I think it depends on map size), so try to place your grids so that you aren't wasting any good terrain.

Forests are going to be your greatest terraforming asset in the early game. They are quick to set up, can expand into fungus, give 1/2/1 yields regardless of how bad the terrain is, and ignore the early game max resource penalties (therefore, you should immediately plant forests on all squares with resource bonuses.)

Later in the game, there are various ways to really exploit terraforming (supply crawlers are used heavily) and demolish the AI's basic terraforming routines. It's up to you how much you want to minmax it at that point.

Some basic tips:

>Use your starting minerals to build a second scout patrol. Have the starting scout patrol to grab any nearby unity pods and then plant it in your HQ. Since it doesn't require support, you'll want to keep it alive as long as possible.
>Get formers ASAP, they're unlocked through Centauri Ecology (it's an Explore tech if you're using unfocused research). Tiles can support both a farm and either a solar collector or mine, build Farms+Mines on rainy tiles or tiles with mineral bonuses, and Farms+Solar Collectors on moist or arid tiles, tiles with rivers, or tiles that are 1000m above sea level.
>Once you unlock armor design a garrison unit using the strongest armor you have and put them in all your cities. Don't bother putting weapons on them, attack strength is useless while defending (and vice versa). Also give them Hypnotic Trance or Non-Lethal Methods (former increases psi defense, latter reduces drones).
>Mind worms don't give a shit about your weapons or armor, attack them first for that 3-2 advantage unless you have something else that helps psi defense (Like sensors, Trance or Perimeter Defenses).

As for favorite faction, Consciousness all the way, transhumanism is rad. For custom rules I generally use all the victory options, No Unity Survey, Look First and whatever the option that lets you pick what you're actually researching because fuck that unpredictability shit.
>>
>>153101237
How is a fleet going to help me take the city when it's 3 tiles away from the coast? In any case I only had galleasses available and they couldn't cross the ocean. As for the screenshot, that's what's left after I threw the rest of my longswordsmen at the city in a final attempt at breaking through.
>>
>>153101505
You know nothing. Hell is only a word. The reality is much, much worse.
>>
>>153097496
I'm not really endeared towards shitposting, friend. If I wanted that I'd go to /v/. Sins is a fun game and a fun one to try and learn, and the fact that it's been out for 8 fucking years and its still getting content once in a while says something for its aging. I just was wondering where sins discussion would go and this general's the closest thing sin's got to a home.
>>
>>153101938
I actually kinda like the *idea* of Blind Research because that's how Science is conducted in the real world. For huge breakthroughs, you can't really predict what you're going to get or how you're going to get there - you just research in a general area and then away start popping the discoveries.

But in a gameplay sort of sense, I agree with you that it can feel kind of crippling.

I just liked that they thought of adding it in. It's a very nice little detail.

>No Unity Survey
Why though? I mean from a canon sort of sense I thought it would make sense that you would get a general idea of the location of continents and oceans when approaching the planet and then making planetfall.

>That starting scout is free support.
Nice

>Tiles can support Farm+Solar or Farm+Mine.
Woah. I didn't know that. I thought it was one improvement per tile. That's huge man, thanks

>Weapons don't matter when defending
That's kinda weird. I mean of course I get armor helping defense, but you're killing them too when they're attacking you. It's not like your armor has spikes or anything. Huh, I guess it's a quirky mechanic

>Attack mind-worms first for advantage
Also didn't know that. Thanks a lot mango

But yeah, could you answer that question from above about No Unity Survey please? And anything else you could tell me would be awesome, apparently I don't know almost anything about the game's mechanics.

I was trying out University first, playing with the classic factions. What can you recommend for University in the early game, and what should I aim for? Should I play SMAX even if it's just the classic factions? Does it bring plenty of improvements? How about the expansion factions, are they interesting apart from the transhumanist one you like?
>>
>>153073782
Haven't seen it myself, maybe a screenshot.
Pretty cool.
>>
>>153104009
Yeah, pretty cool.
>>
>>153103942
>No Unity Survey
It's mostly because I'm used to having fog of war in every other 4X game I've played. It's just a matter of taste, maybe I should try turning it off at some point. I too like the idea of blind research but from a gameplay standpoint I just can't stand it, especially when your early tech choices are so important.

University isn't a bad starting point, but in my opinion the best faction for the inexperienced is probably Spartans, can't really go wrong with them. They get a lot of generally useful stuff like extra morale across the board (helps a ton against the constant mind worms and those inevitable early game wars against Miriam and Yang), better police, free prototypes and IIRC a starting scout rover? I don't remember, was a while since I last played Spartans. Point is, they get all of this at the mere expense of a +10% mineral cost for base production, which is a pretty great deal. Plus if you're lucky with unity pods and find some early tech you can build an Impact Rover or similar which can single-handedly go on a conquering spree that early in the game.

As for anything else, uh, let's see:

>Tile yields are all capped at 2 until you research certain techs (This is why you wanted to build F+Ms on rainy tiles to start - Mines give +1 minerals but -1 food, which lets the tile stay at 2 food with the farm.) or if the tile has a resource bonus (which ignores the yield limit for that resource only). The techs that remove these caps come fairly early, but not immediately.
>Bases will start losing energy to inefficiency the more cities you have and the further away from your HQ those cities are. This can be reduced by increasing your Efficiency score in the Social Engineering table and/or by building Children's Creches in those bases. By contrast, having a low Efficiency score will cause you to lose more energy to inefficiency. At -4 Efficiency you will lose ALL ENERGY produced in all bases outside your HQ so don't do that.)

Sure there's overlap, but would that be better? I could even buy out to the wonder.

Shit.
Somehow suffers MORE from the "You have to micro every goddam unit at all times and places" shit thay GalCiv2 did. Games rapidly degenerate into a bloated mess.
>>
>>153108830
Ooh, that's a pretty good spot too.
You're losing a lot of tiles to useless water and mountains though.
>>

Well, it'll have to do. Animal Husbandry spruced up every spot you picked. and the one we just discussed has horses on it, so, yeah. Imma go with the mountain.

What's the best way to bring divergent pops back into the governing ethics of your empire?

Going full Individualist so purge is a no-go.
>>
>>153108865
>>153108825
well that sounds depressing

a-at least the ship maker is fun? r-right?
>>
>>153110741
Only if you want to be creative
>>
>>153110679
I don't think you can directly change a pop's ethics in any way, so your best bet's just to make sure it doesn't happen. If you get the xenophobe ethic you can build a monument to purity to reduce it a bit, but if you're going individualist there's no really good way of making sure pops don't diverge.
>>
>>153096351
>Which custom rules / map modes did you like best / hate?
I liked turning off goody huts and "look first" that lets you choose your first city site.
>Which factions were your favorites?
Yang and Morgan.
>What did you try to do in the early game (crazy expansionism, or play tall?)
Expand and spread forests, roads and coms stations everywhere and beeline for the tech that gives you Wealth and Crawlers.
>What were your priorities as the game went on?
Yang: Fill the world with more Yang. Morgan: Build a crawler part of legendary proportions.
>And more importantly
>How did you decide where to place your bases and where to terraform?
Yang: Every two tiles, same as the boreholes, with farms with condensors everywhere else.
Morgan: widely spaced, very small cities with 100% specialist pops, supported by vast numbers of land and sea crawlers.
>>
>>153110679
It don't matter.
Ethics divergance doesn't do anything particularly bad, and is basically inevitable until you get mind control lasers at the top of the tech tree, so you should just resign yourself to it.
>>
>>153103942

You should certainly play Smax, and the use the unofficial patch version that fixes a bunch of bugs. the new factions are terrible but you don't have to use them, you can play with the far superior original set and still benefit from the improvements of smax.
http://www.4shared.com/archive/RCvV6AeQ/SMACX_with_UnofficialPatch1.html?

^^This should run fine from any folder, remember to use the smax.exe and not the smac one.

>Blast. Planning on going full Allahu-Ackbar with religious zealots on my next playthrough. So to be faithful to it I'd have to treat the spiritual aliens as alright but purge the non-spiritual?

Well what kind of spiritualism do you have?

A specific religion? Is your leader god-emperor? Do you have a god or gods who are the only true gods in the universe?

I think you can go at it in different ways.

Picked back up after some sleep.

The army is starting to look more organized and sensible. The little mining outpost on Machholz has a decent number of mines now but it barely produces a tenth of what Earth can manage. It needs some more when it comes around on its next orbit.
I'm tired of waiting for the private sector to move the terraformers to Mars. It is time to take it into my own hands. I will construct troop transports for the construction brigades required to build them on the red planet, and transport them all myself. The director's are too patient.

Well, I've been playing SMAX for a few hours now and I'm feeling like I'm fucking up big time somewhere

I'm on Talent (Normal) difficulty, furthest I've played yet

What should I do? Lal is King of the World and a bully friend. Yang, Santiago, and Morgan all have vendettas on me and Lady Deirdre is my only friend.

Faction colors shown in this map. I have the most territory but I feel very aimless. I dunno what my goals should be as University to win this game.

Any tips? Am I fucking up something big time? Should I restart? I'm the white space on the map
>>
>>153125610
Have you got fusion power yet?
Until you're a minmaxing 1337 gamer you shouldn't really expect to accomplish anything until then. Fusion Power is to SMAC as Industrial Era is to Civ V.
>>
>>153125610
University does very well at transcendence victories since it's effectively a science victory. They can be pretty effective at UN council shenanigans too since their inevitable tech lead can give them a nasty edge in war to get the population boost and your goals and ethics tend to coincide with the gaians and peacekeepers turning you into a triumvirate of faggotry that the other factions can't match since they all hate each other.

Especially the believers. Believe me after a couple of games you'll see why EVERYONE hates her. Even the fucking peacekeepers tend to war her within 20 turns of making contact with her.
>>
Why do almost all space 4X games released lately have average or below average reviews? e.g. Distant Worlds, Stellaris, GCIII, StarDrive 2, Endless Space, Star Ruler 2, yadah yadah. Are the 4x games being released lately actually bad or is 4x just an unpopular genre?
>>
>>153128364
I killed her within the first years. Bitch only had two cities at the time. No one else even got the chance to get her commlink.
>>
>>153128479
4x is an unpopular genre and recent releases on the space front have been decent at best. That a lot of the more recent games have been follow ups to cult classics like galciv2 and the MoO remake doesn't help a lot of them out either.
>>
>>153128479
The last good space game I played, that actually had staying power, was Haegemonia Legions of Iron, in like 2002.
Space strategy has been shit for more than a decade.
SoaSE was alright, but large maps took 20 yours of samey gameplay to clear and after 3 skirmishes you'd seen everything.
>>
>>153128479
Some people just aren't good at the thinking needed to play a 4x game and win.
>>
>>153130942
Yet most grand strat games have >90% reviews, they're not really mindless button mashers either.

I got a new chair today for playing games in. It's super comfy and makes me feel like I'm sitting at the head of a space empire.
What I ask of whomever here is to suggest some galaxy settings for a game of Distant Worlds. I tried uneven clusters and found the isolation intriguing. It was a bit dull at points, however.
Pic related, it's the commander chair.

Just realized I have never played SMAC before, I've played all the Civilization games though. Is there anything I need to know before I play it like 'install this patch to make it 2000% less painful' or anything? Seems like business as usual.

It's difficult to tell if you're fucking something up justs by looking at the map here, you've expanded pretty far so at a glance I wouldn't say you're doing too bad. Just reinforce that tech lead and don't get your ass kicked, as long as you have a decent military you should be able to repel any inventions. Get Fusion Power like that anon said plus Needlejets if you don't already have them by some chance.

Distant Worlds is good though. The reviewers just had no clue how to play the game.
Stellaris is basically an alpha.
Endless Space is very lacking, but at least it was the first game of the studio and they're improving rapidly, Endless Space 2 should be good.
I didn't play the rest because they all look mediocre.

>>
Is anno domini a good mod for Civ 5 ?
>>
>>153152927
Seven Kingdoms 2.
It's fairly old and pretty clunky (opening an information slows down the game), but the game mechanisms are so fun I end up still playing it despite it coming out 17 years ago.
Maybe I just have bad tastes.

It got a HD release on Steam and GoG.
>>
>>153153125
Nah, you don't. I played it back when it was released, it's the RTS with the best mechanics out there. I never found a game with diplomacy as good and the population mechanics of cities is pretty good.
>>
>>153153554
Honestly, I don't like how population works in SK2. That, and the AI are probably the two things I don't like in that game.
That's why I always play Egyptian.

The rest of the game perfectly suits me, since I'm a slow player.
>>
>>153153685
Yeah, I'm a slow player too, but I like the population mechanic. It kinda feels wrong that all RTS don't have something like that and actually developing your cities instead of just rushing somewhere feels nice.

the game of Civ 4 I played recently I built the Manehatten Project and then the UN. I figured with UN; 'hey this is an easy win if shit goes south'. I had the largest population so naturally I assumed I'd be holding a majority vote. Boy was I wrong. Not only was I short, but I underestimated how much of a slut Catherine was--she owned the fucker until I deleted Napolean.
So the lesson learned is; build nukes BEFORE letting the AI decide what you can and can't build. Then kill them and take their shit, or just win by score.

About ES2, from a dev on the Steam forums

>AI will be functional, although very basic in many regards. It will create fleets, expand, wage war and push against the player. If you're playing poorly, it could definitely mess you up and overrun you.

>However, there are several systems it doesn't understand/use as of now, and it has no meta-game vision yet. Therefore, it won't ally with others against you, or try to catch you in a pincer move, or generally try to outsmart you.

>If it comes at you, it'll be head-on and with all its might.

>For context: for Early Access we aim for the AI to be comparable to the Easy mode of our other games. AI quality should however improve rapidly, as we have several programmers and a game designer who are fully dedicated to the game's AI.

I am done with this bullshit. They're reusing the UI, they're reusing the races, they're reusing the engine (Unity), they're reusing the music guy (I'm sick to death of FlyByNo, all his music sounds the same).

btw isn't this part of https://youtu.be/LY0lLcz3Qis?t=15m15s a song literally from the Endless Legend OST?

It's a fan-made update that completely overhauls the civ v system, rather well if you ask me. Rebalanced social policies, new units and upgrade paths, tons of unique features... it's a very good mod. I can play vanilla pretty comfortably on Deity, but CPP is challenging on Emperor.

In honor of the news of an earth-like exoplanet being found orbiting within the inhabitable zone of the star Proxima Centauri in the Alpha Centauri system, I encourage you all to come revisit the classic that was Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, now that it may actually come to pass in the coming centuries.

Here are some quotes to woo you into the mood.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIUb66Q6abQ

And also, for modern computers: GOG version works wonders. It works out of the box on Windows. On Linux, you only have to set Wine to use "emulate virtual desktop" at your desktop resolution and you're good to go, so that you can easily alt tab.

It is strongly recommended you apply two patches / unofficial mods.

First, apply this one, called PRACX:
http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=14308.0

And once you have patched it with that, overwrite it with this other patch
http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=291

And there you go. Now you have nice looking Alpha Centauri at 1080p, with your scroll wheel being able to zoom in and out, with extra terrain layout views (like faction, elevation, rainfall, etc)\

Enjoy!

If anyone needs the GOG file and doesn't have the money, just ask and I could upload the installer to MEGA or something.

in a way, there aren't.

As it is in vanilla, you have 4 types of units
Melee/Ranged/Mounted/Siege

but in CPP you have 5
Melee/Ranged/Mounted/Seige/Mounted Ranged

The problem is when you have chariot archers, and they have to upgrade into knights. You get poor cross promotion synergy because the ranged attack promotions do not help melee attacks. Additionally, the game is severely imbalanced when you bring Camel Archers or Keshiks into the picture. Why should only 2 civs have the benefit of these units? Archers that can move 4 tiles and 3 range?

CPP adds a ton of new content, it practically reinvents the game. It's difficult and new, but overall the changes feel necessary.

some ones that I like:

Contextual Unit Names - names your units based on what type as well as when and where it was built, for example "1st Recon of London" would be your first scout's name instead of just "Scout"
Promotions Expansion Pack - adds tons of new unit promotions
PerfectWorld3 - a random map generator, I like the results I get from this
Barbarians Unlimited Exp - cheesing it a bit, but I like this because I always play with raging barbarians on

That said
Good fucking god, the AI loves war in CBP
I went as britain pissing off my neighbours
Got in a few wars that made sense
Then I decided to lay low and take in the broken Babylonians and Chinese in as vassals
That didn't go like expected
The Netherlands, who was a friend up until then, decided to attack me
France decided to join the party
I kicked their shit in a bit, nothing much, just penal expedition stuff
Either way, the Swedish and the Celts ddecided I was too belligerent and attacked me
After showing them a bit of skirmishes and what the Royal Navy is capable of they surrendered
I wanted to lay low once more, because war is hell and I wasnt out to be Hitler, but the Dutch wanted a round two, joined by the French again
After a few turns the Polynesians joined to fuck me over
Korea who was at first place started to dick me over in the World Congress, and was hated by everyone, so I gave him a visit soon after
Naturally as the AI always likes you when fighting a common enemy, they decided to all see me as a common enemy and joined Korea's side in a weird League of Cambrai-esque fashion
I havent experienced peace after that, the Persians, who were real nice to me up until that, declared war, and short after Dido did too, Sweden started to like me again after I forced , but after a short while he declared war once more, so I conquered his heartlands. Finally I had to eradicate everyone except my vassals and a few people who could still see the better side in me
Darius is pretty swell guy though, and my vassals were really chill with having me as their sugar daddy

What difficulty should I play it on if I've never played it before?
>>

What was the problem? The difficulty is totally scalable, there's usually multiple options to approach tasks and you can take the game in your own pace. Was your Deity and starting area weak? Or maybe you didn't understand the card system at all?
>>
>>153196896
You will occasionally start with two colony pods, it's fairly frequent. In my many years of playing this game I have yet to figure out what condition you need to fulfill for it happen, though. I think it might have something to do with the general quality of the landing site (e.g land in a shit spot = get an extra colony pod for your trouble), but I'm not sure.
>>
>>153198673
Citizen is braindead difficulty
Specialist is easy, but will teach you the basics
Talent is normal, and will quiz you on the basics
Librarian, Thinker, and Transcend are sort of similar to Emperor, Immortal, and Deity on Civ 5

So to answer your question, either start on Specialist not knowing what you're doing, or start on Talent after reading up on some tips online

I'm playing on Talent right now

I decided to immediately take Lal's second city because it was super vulnerable and I didn't want him to forward settle me. So right now I'm in the good ole' 1-1-1 era wars. Trying to figure out what to do with this Former in Sunny Mesa. Forests everywhere, or what? Anyone wanna chime in? I'm still super clueless about Former exploitation.

Also, I got super lucky and got my Scouts cloned twice, so right now I have 3 independent scouts walking around. Pretty sweet. I plan to use them as garrison for my first 3 cities.
>>
>>153196724
>>153196896
>>153197214
>>153199304

It depends on difficulty and start location. On Transcend, you'll pretty much always have 2 pods. If you're playing lower, it'll evaluate your landing spot and if it's a disadvantage, you'll get compensation in the form of a second Colony Pod, more Supply Pods, or a Unity Foil if your start has little land mass.

Forests are generally good if you have lots of super shitty arid tiles or similar (or plan to build Hybrid Forests in each and every single one of your city). Your starting location isn't amazing, but it's not bad enough to warrant spamming forests everywhere. For Sunny Mesa I'd go for Farms+Solar collectors everywhere to take advantage of that altitude.

Above all though you should focus on settling that Borehole Cluster because three boreholes for ABSOLUTELY FREE plus rainy terrain plus a fuckton of monoliths is really fucking grand.

I found out yesterday that if you uplift, then later genemod, the species list will still show the icon for "Uplifted, happier on their masters' planets", but they won't actually GET the +20%.

Since SMAC is being posted it occurs to me that - although I, like you, am triggered by terra nullis in Civ V and BERT - I never was in Alpha Centauri.
I think it's because the maps were so big and the borders were so inconsequential (both from a gameplay and interface perspective) in SMAC that you never felt the obligation to map-paint.

I think I would've wanted more empty land in beyond earth.

The frontier feel is nice, but spamming cities is better so that feel goes away quickly.

For a civ game based on history I'd like empty land that was claimed.
Like if civ5 was 5 times as large, and cities were also further away from eachother, but your borders would cover much much more.
>>
>>153214241
> I think I would've wanted more empty land in beyond earth

I get - and agree with - the idea that you want to feel like a frontier colonist when you first land, but by the end of the game the world is supposed to be some sort of Master-Of-The-Universe ecumenopolis that can re-invade Earth with cyborg spidermechs, and it feels decidedly odd to be doing that when half the planet is still unsettled.

But yes, I get that avoiding this is more important in Civ, because in Civ we KNOW that the whole world is settled, rather than in BE where I just sci-fi speculate that it should be.
>>
>>153215126
>because in Civ we KNOW that the whole world is settled
Well we know it's claimed at least.

Green are my planets(sixth one will get uplifted any day now), purple are my outposts.

Pink is a good tomb world.
The uplifted are built for physics research and are Irradiated.
They're also ocean preference, I am continent preference.

The purple circle near the galactic core covers a large ocean planet.

The blue circle covers two large ocean planets and another tomb world.

Brown circles covers two large continental worlds.

I don't have enough influence for the Pink tomb world currently, will get 500 when I uplift, but I'll get more than the cap and effectively waste 100 that way, so tempted to start building a frontier outpost in the blue circle instead to save on influence.

Not getting a lot of core world techs, so thinking about switching to a core world government instead.

Maybe even the +10 and go for a bit of rabid expansion.

2(tomb)+4(ocean)+2(cont)=8, would let me take those planets now, but cripple my tech for a while.
Have prole presentients I can uplift within my territory.
Earthbounds are sadly too far away, but maybe I can reach them if I get the pink circle.

Not him, but I'm noticing a couple things.
It's 2271, which means if he's running a 10-year election government, and is meeting election goals, that's 7 elections worth of influence gains. It's possibly also why he has enough leaders to fuel all those science ships.

Between first-contact influence rewards, election rewards, passive income, and other small rewards from various events, it's not really that unreasonable.
>>
>>153217550
>but aren't you WAY spread out?
The green circles are all pretty close to eachother except for the one up top.

>How is your influence so high if you've been dotting out your planets so much?
I've colonized 4 planets.
Do you stay only colonize 3 or what are you talking about?

And my influence was like 990 when I created the frontier outpost that I needed to uplift irradiated.

this

>city is starving

>>153218481
It's just that colonization costs shittonnes of influence, moreso when the planets are far from your borders.
Although desu you don't tend to be low on influence in the early game; because there's nothing to do and you play on fast speed it accrues pretty rapidly. I usually find myself with plenty at early game, plenty at late game, but a yawning chasm of purple poverty in the midgame (unless I'm going full Culture xeno enlightenment)
>>

Yeah I don't automates them from turn one, just when all my cities have been mostly improved. In any case all of them represent a good idea let down by ridiculous micro requirements. Fighting large-scale wars is utterly ridiculous because it takes 20 turns for your fleets to get from your factory starbases to the front, by which time the front has moved, so you have to micro them all AGAIN, and the same problem reoccurs.

It's like the devs were just going for a very abstract tool to teach Zeno's Paradox.

>>
>>153221516
I'd rather manage my workers earlier on than leave it to the AI for the whole game.
>>
>>153216690
I usually go for tradition and have a relatively small number of cities so I just manually control my workers, I don't really find it tedious unless I have a lot of them. After a certain point I stick most of them on auto, which is usually when I have maybe 5 or so cities that have large borders, or I go liberty and pump out like 10 cities and empty tiles start getting captured every couple of turns or so. I find that the automatic workers are actually pretty good most of the time, so if you have them set to not replace improvements and remove features then you don't have to worry about minor details like whether they want to put a mine or a farm on the hill next to the river on a size 20 city with 50 output. You can usually fix stuff if you really don't like what they do anyway.
>>

Why is the option to make a DoF in civ 5 not there? I've been friendly with sweden for fucking ages and it won't show up. What influences a DoF be available?

Just putting this out here.

If you have the xenophile trait and a few migration treaties going on the best way to colonise en masse mid game is to shoot off Droid colonists to planets. Droids don't give a fuck and by mid-game you should be having a decent energy supply to populate even without migration treaties.

Early to mid-game is best spent expanding your borders to include as many habitable planets as possible, then mid-game you have droids colonise them. With adaptability techs, frontier clinics and visitor centres those worlds will be populated very quickly. Beyond that just chuck them in an sector and you're golden. Generally the AI doesn't do an awful job of developing the planet if you ensure they respect the base tile resources.
>>
>>153223835
Does the AI build things that use influence or planetary uniques?
>>
>>153223948
Seeing as Sectors only indicate an energy and mineral stockpile, and that I've never seen them build anything that required influence, I would say no.

There aren't any workers at all in CTP.
Cities produced public works points, and then you picked tile improvements from a menu and just plopped them down on the map yourself. They took X number of turns to complete and then boom, you're done.
>>
>>153223835
>If you have the xenophile trait and a few migration treaties going on the best way to colonise en masse mid game is to shoot off Droid colonists to planets. Droids don't give a fuck and by mid-game you should be having a decent energy supply to populate even without migration treaties.

As someone in the middle of a xenophile game I must disagree.
Because migrants are fucking stupid. Colonise with droids and you'll end up with your pristine new desert worlds filled up by arid and tropical preference xenophobe dissidents who all flock to what they think is a racially pure new homeland, except they all arrive at the exactsame time so send each others' happiness plummeting, and then the planet's just a breeding ground for spastic-ethos-holding refuseniks instead of a productive world full of peeps with the right habitability.

You should always colonise with the right species, holding the right ethos. I literally don't colonise a planet type at all until I've got an 80% pop with my empires' ethos, making occasional exception with my founder species in the early game.

That's why Migration Treaties with smaller empires (that sort of align with your ideals) are the superior choice. Of course you're going to get racial puritans hoping for a new aryan planet flocking to you if you have an immigration treaty with a massive empire bound to have a huge ethically diverse pop.

You know when you're in system view and there's all the arrows pointing to other systems? For warp to work, the game looks for a legal (in the sense of open borders) network path between the start and destination system, and if there isn't one, you can't make the trip. It's like an under-the-hood hyperlane network (and is the same way the game computes adjacency allowances for sector formation).
So if greens closed borders on you recently, or expanded over a formerly neutral star, that's why it doesn't work.

Can somebody explain why GalCiv3 is bad? All I hear is that it's terrible, but it's supposed to be a facelift for GalCiv2, what's bad about that?

Also, why is new MOO bad? I hear it's shallow, but if we consider that that's what it wants to be (a simple game) - is it bad at being, well, a game?

I played Stellaris and that game is broken - victory conditions are terrible and general gameplay is a slog. Never finished a game.

Are MOO and GalCiv3 similarly broken?
>>
>>153237185
>>153237993
just some QoL i've found really help;
there's an option to turn private (corporate) ships to half transparency, i use it or else it becomes a mess when looking at a system
also i don't remember what starts as default but you'll want the empire influence to be more like the stellaris map rather than the "shade whatever star system is in my SOI". i believe it is "Show Empire Influence (ON)" on the furthest right for the map

taxes and happiness are inversely related. i think happiness is what affects population growth. however, there's only a few things other than taxes which affect happiness (holographic universe wonder, for example).
one rather cheap but effective strat is when starting the game, keep your taxes low for a few years to massively boost your birthrate - and then raise your taxes in a year or two. really helps.

you can incentivize migration by keeping high pop worlds with high tax rates and low pop worlds with little - 0 tax rates. pops can freely leave your empire to another empire if they have more happiness (provided the ai doesn't put the 'do not accept' option')

when you start the game (if you're a prewarp) you'll want to build a small station and and exploration ship immediately, and begin searching your system for the ruin that gives you prewarp

you pretty much always want to use custom start rather than any of the preset timeline starts

corruption isn't a problem at the beginning (it scales by population and distance from homeworld), and it only affects your tax income

some wonders are shit - some are really strong (species-specific ones, the ones with empire wide benefits AND high speed shipyards, 200% construction speed at one planet is good)

oh and a cool strat is you can literally just set the entire empire to automatic and watch the ai play to understand what to do
>>
>>153239024
and then slowly transfer more functions to you once you think you know what you're doing

as i said, you probably want to keep design on automatic unless you want a specific ship (with weapons) you can create on the side

carrier-type weapons (fighter bays, etc) are probably the best weaponry

Okay, I found the button, it was hidden under PREFERENCES in the GAME MENU, as the second option. Very hard to find, no wonder I missed it. I don't know why anyone would want to have this option on, half the time it gives you units that are literally worse than what you already have.
>>
>>153244181
ah, well that's really annoying. It says you can put it adjacent to your territory. Thanks
>>
>>153244651
I think you can do that if the land is not claimed.
>>
>>153244721
You can put it on claimed lands too, the mod he uses just changes it

New dev diary for stellaris, fallen empires getting an upgrade

Did you or they at some point before this turn down an offer for DoF?
>>
>>153245912
Nope. I was DoF with 2 other civs and remember the option being there. Now some time later the option to ask for a DoF wasn't available for other civs, and then they DoF'd me a few turns later. Weird. Was just wondering is there some mechanics that remove the option for some reason. Even tho I was friendly status with them.

That's why you don't ally with anybody. There's literally no point to diplomacy in this game.

He goes into it in more detail. The pay feature is a special kind of superpower war of extermination event. I think woke FEs can still get into conventional wars if you don't shell out yer sheckels.

GC3 is mediocre BECAUSE its only a facelift of 2. They didn't break any new ground form what I heard.
There are some problems with 2, top tier being too much micro with few tools to manage it. Rally points are decent but clunky.
The AI is painfully stupid and war happy. Civs that are supposed to be 'peaceful' like the Torians and Arceans are the most aggressive empires in the game, partly because they expand so far and build so many 'decent' ships.
And they don't pay attention to what you use and build to counter like in ES for example. Admittedly I was only on normal so its likely they're so stupid when that low they didn't for ~40 turns.

Other than that, its alright. I just cleared a game in about 5 hours. The best part is early game when you're traipsing around the galaxy plunking colonies down and poking anomalies. The worst part is when the AI decides to fuck your shit up because its a retard and you have to throw your trade empire into a fuck-you empire.

the paraducks decided that we don't need alliances anymore

so either a defensive pact between you and a single empire
or a federation with you and two or more

I'm not sure how wounds work. Basically, if you let them rest, they recover all damages.
>>
>>153251871
yeah, if you have a healer or get them to your village they heal, but there is always a chance for them to die (two of my guys died) if they are wounded (have a drop of blood in the corner of their portrait)
