How would you feel about PLD getting a Sword and Board mechanic in 4.x? Certain abilities would swap them between sword and shield stances, these stances would allow for different effects or somthing more simply like higher potency on attacks in sword and higher potency of defensive skills in shield.

No, that's not what I mean. The process is tempering, but as confirmed in a Live Letter, each one has a separate elemental name for their process. Ifrit uses a blue flame to temper. Leviathan's process is drowning and the victims are called drowned. Odin sunders, and he can only have one Sundered at a time. Check Live Letter XXVII.

Crit > SS > Det.

For progression focus on piety and crit. You want a nice MP pool until you feel comfortable with the fight. After that you swap out pieces for more crit.

The reason why spellspeed is valued more than det now is because of the dot tick changes and the fact that broil exists. It also makes your life a whole lot easier in raid.
