I've been re-watching early Bleach episodes and what really struck me was how fucking good the dynamic between the two main characters was.. The interaction between Rukia and Ichigo was really the heart of the show back then. The Fullbring arc showed that he was bored with his life without his Shinigami powers (he even broke down over it). It pretty much proved he liked to fight more than anything else. Protecting his friends was just a bonus.

So his characters is even more of an empty void than what general people think.

Deidara literally took the the full-frontal assault of Uchiha eyehax and plot armor. No matter what he did he got Sharingan'd. Any halfway competent writer would have spent more time developing Neji before killing him off. The anime team actually did better with that, by building on the quasi-sibling relationship between him and Hinata, which payed off when he ended up becoming a body shield for her. Kishi had to bullshit up something about Neji dying for Naruto because Naruto called him a genius; everyone called Neji a genius, though. It was nothing new to him.

Funnily enough, I found Obito to be far more interesting because he subverted many of the griping points that I had with the Uchiha. He had a greater emotional range; that's a huge one. It made it far more interesting to listen to his rants, in which he often didn't believe half the shit he said, and made the amount of time spent focused upon him feel more justified, simply because there were more layers to explore. He was conflicted about Kakashi and what he had become, and though physically powerful, possessed a pitiful, broken core to him, that made it feel less like we were simply supposed to be an awe of how great his clan is.

Naruto managing to Talk no Jutsu Obito actually made sense since the later hated himself and acknowledged that he was trash. Far more so than for say, Nagato, who genuinely believed in what he was doing and who had been fighting for an ideal for more than a decade.
