Playing grapplers in KOF. Enemy jumps nonstop, everytime I throw out a normal it seems to get stuffed. I've never delved deep into a KOF game before, just tinkered a bit, so I feel like I'm really missing some fundamental rule of gameplay. Can anyone give me some advice on what to do?

Clark. And, every button I suppose. His only feasible anti-air seems to be his heavy kick, but it's a bit slow and goes out at a far 45 degree angle as opposed to a proper above-the-head kind of hitbox. Getting in to do command throws feels nearly impossible, his running throw is a strike-hit so it's blockable. I just can't seem to get close to people, even to use normals. I definitely don't think Clark is bad by any means, I just know I'm doing something wrong but I don't know what it is

You should probably be pressing st.A for hop anti airs and if someone is jumping at you, you should air to air with j.B or j.D. You're also going to get a lot of mileage out of sweep into step. St.D is more of a preemptive check rather than your normal AA, you're more trying to fish for knockdowns than just blatantly running into someone's face and throwing them.

Hmm alright, I didn't even think about cancelling sweep into step. I couldn't figure out what step was even good for since rolling exists. I guess it didn't help either that I fought a guy who used Choi and Tung so I was constantly whiffing moves that I thought should hit up close, such as standing heavy kick. I'm a frame data monster in sf so not knowing any of that here is leaving me at a disadvantage. The gameplan on wakeup is make a read. There are too many options in KoF for there to be any one answer. Typically grappler gameplan in KoF is imposing your normals on someone so they turtle up so you can throw them. With Clark, meaty sweep is gonna be a pretty strong tool for you since from max range it will keep your opponent in check and should be pretty safe against wakeup DP.

Also, be sure to test your advantage in training mode with 1 guard jump, it's a really valuable tool. In the few seconds I was looking at clark I see that cr.C is maybe -1 or -2, Vulcan Punch is like 0 on block and far B looks to be like +3 on block.

Clark is my main and while I'm by no means good, my general gameplan is usually being patient while the opponent jumps around like a crackhead on a trampoline, then do running grab/roll into them and heavy punch into throw. Use the absurd reach on his heavy punch to poke

Typically how KoF DP's work is C DP is invincible but slow, A DP is not invincible or has very little invincibility but is fast. You can use that to your advantage with wakeup situations.

Probably late, but the crounch input for your medium punch is not the reason you're doing a srk.
It's the forward input before doing your qcf.

6236 is a common "shortcut" for doing a srk motion.
If you want to trow a fireball while walking as Ryu you should do for example:
6 (maintain to walk) 5 236 P

if you do 6236 you will fly into the air.

XBlaze takes place 150 years before Calamity Trigger and basically sets the backround for the Black Beast. There are some other things but they're generally minor. Side works like XBlaze are just supplementary material for people to get into if they want to know even more in-depth things about the story.

If it has any major influence on the main story, we won't know until CF comes out, since everything up until now has worked well enough as a standalone.

Feel between 98 and 2k2 is definitely different.
cr.B cr.A feels totally different in both. In 98 you take it slow tap break tap and in 2k2 it's more of a tap tap.
Also getting combos off jumpins feels a lot harder in 2k2.

Buffering in any game is just hiding the start of inputs while you do other inputs. The only thing that changes ever is when you buffer what. For instance Kyo does cr.B cr.A QCFx2+A as a BnB, instead of trying to do a whole double fireball input off of cr.A, you can do cr.B QCF cr.A QCF+A and still get it to work. Same thing with ranbu motions, just do cr.B QCB cr.A QCF instead.

To put it in brief terms, Advanced mode can do EX supers outside of MAX mode, Extra mode was buffed and gains Quick Max, and there's a new Ultimate mode where you can make a custom groove with the options that you want from either Advanced or Extra.

In more descriptive terms way the hell to much to list the entire game plays differently, everyone was rebalanced and the meta changed a lot with the new changes.

Possibly missing the pure down input. KoF only recognizes the cardinal directions for motions bigger than QCF, so if you're going from diagonal to diagonal it doesn't work. If you're doing the rekka that is QCF+A HCB+P you can try doing the input as QCF+A QCB+A and I think the F input from QCF will make it work but I don't remember if that's reliable.

If you never bought ultra then just start your "ultra" up on steam and it will be ssf4aev2012. Capcom just renamed everyones library entry because they cant into computers.

They kept rebalancing the game so that LoL players could play and win. All of the original characters are the scrubbiest mash the auto combo and win idiot magnets, all of the stolen characters are basic as fuck because any complexity they had was taken from them, anti airs got way worse over time unless you have an invincible DP, pokes got really shitty, the pay to win and freemium elements got really shitty to the point where you had to grind to unlock supers and stat bonuses for your character, and in general everything that they changed from KoF is worse than KoF.

Also I wouldn't even bother playing anymore because they made the game only partial peer to peer so even playing Americans will sometimes connect to the server in China and will be unplayable. It's not worth the effort to play a shitty KoF clone when you can just play KoF. It used to be a fun novelty when it was more of a direct rip but the balancing and general ruining of the game made it lose that charm.

Practice your mixup options alot. He's one of the harder characters in the game to play so it's likely going to take a while to get used to him. The Dustloop threads are pretty useful since Valk is top-tier in CPEX so there's alot of information about him there.
