Yeah, I think something broke in them when they were working on Ultimax, except in P4D's case it actually makes sense thematically.

Teddie is just more of an interesting character than Morgana.

His design of a fat zipper bear is more unique than Morgana who is just a cartoon cat. Teddie also transforms to attractive blond kid which makes him a dream come true. Teddie just has way more personality than Morgana. Morgana can turn into a bus, but Teddie will always be the more loved and more memorable character.

God I hope they give Ryuji's VA some emotional lines. He's genuinely fantastic.

In Chie's case, she's supposed to be energetic and goofy, so the acting actually matches the silliness of the character. When it comes to Yukiko, you don't really need much acting and the VA sounds like a grandma. For Naoto, you don't need that much acting either. Erin was the best VA after Rise's and Kanji's.

It'll be more precise with the current AI we have now, but I always like to have developers try newer things instead of just doing the same thing because it works better *now*. Take Dragon's Dogma, it's fun, but in the beginning the pawns (your AI helpers) are silly as hell, but give them awhile, and they are doing some crazy shit by adapting to your playstyle, sometimes holding enemies down for you and following up with your attacks by roping enemies out of the sky or giving you appropriate buffs on the fly. Same thing is happening with FFXV, with giving the player context moves, but the AI also sets up links for you to follow up or diving out of the way of spells.

Basically getting closer to actually fighting together with your party members, instead of just using them as drones. Of course than you have to mitigate it even if AI gets to that golden point of being able to follow along with you completely, but also keeping the challenge up and making sure players don't become complacent. It's a tough thing. But I never want developers to stop trying to improve the concept.

I've never played smash and I don't know what tripping even is, but if you think I'm arguing that any design decision that works as intended is good, I'm not. I'm saying that party member AI was a design decision made with the intention of using game mechanics to paint your party members as people with individual wills. This design choice might've been cool if only it had worked as intended, which it absolutely didn't. Fortunately, Atlus realized in time for P3P that party member AI wasn't working and it just wasn't worth it to them to stick with their original intentions. So they gave the player direct control back, as you said.
