I want to have buildings that are destructible dynamically but don't know how to code such a thing. Do you think it's good enough to just do the good old trick of replacing the building's mesh with a segmented prefab? I have a targetFPS = 60 constant, which is my GM macro.
On begin step I get delta, which is delta-time relative to my target FPS. It returns 1 if FPS is 60, 2 if FPS is 30 and so on. Just so I don't have to deal with tiny number delta_time returns every time.

global.deltaUnscaled = 1 * (targetFPS/1000000) * delta_time;
global.delta = global.deltaUnscaled * timeMulti;

Then this delta is used for all movement shit. I use timeMulti if I want to tweak game speed and unscaled delta is just for things i don't want to change when i tweak the speed like double keypress timer.

Just look up a tutorial or something for this shit.

You can make the original mesh prefractured with sleeping and jointed rigidbodies. Attach them to eachother with low breakpoint rigid joints, remove gravity and then reapply gravity whenever they wakeup.

That way you don't need to replace any mesh when things are hit.

That's why I add unique little things to my songs, such as a weird percussion instrument thrown in there, or some wonky-ass synth pad flowing in every once in a while. I also always have at least one live instrument. That helps stave off the feeling of generic electro.

I think by definition, a non-party game has to allow some 1MA type shit in order to be playable.

Say you're a warrior, and you're fine at tanking or deflecting damage from a single big enemy, and can deal a lot of damage to that enemy. But if you encounter a swarm of enemies you'll get overwhealmed because you can't kill them all fast enough.

But then say you're a wizard, and you're fine at dealing with swarms of enemies because you have AoE attacks, but you get dumpstered every time you try to fight a boss.

But if you're a warrior with some AoE attacks you might be able to muddle through. Or if you're a wizard that can summon a meatshield minion of some kind you might be able to handle bosses.

I guess you just have to test it and reach a balance that feels right. That said I have no idea what your game is about.

Is Path of Exile a good example of the kind of thing you want?

Finally getting started on the first boss for Dungeon Break: The Pit Lord

He's a necromancer of sorts, who uses the scavengers of The Pit to harvest the flesh of The Forgotten.

I'm thinking he'll have a two phase battle.

First, you've got a two-way platform above a pit of flesh and gore, which you can drop safely into. His first phase consists of him appearing and disappearing around the area, summoning zombies, and casting dark magic. It doesn't take long to best his scrawny self.

In his second phase, he pulls the flesh on the bottom of the stage into himself, forming an abomination of flesh, much larger than his original form. With the flesh and gore now on his person, it reveals a layer of spikes at the bottom of the stage, removing the player's option to dodge attacks by dropping down.

Got whips working a bit better. Attack speed was boosted a bit and the hitbox was made smaller. Still haven't implemented the homing mechanic.

The combat is functionally identical to games like SotN or playing as Zero in MMX4+

Ground attacks are stationary, while you retain mobility in the air until you land.

Anybody have an idea of how to do an infinitely scrolling repeating background? The first example of this that comes to mind is Megaman Legends, but I've seen it done in a lot of games. I'm having a difficult time grasping how they did it in an elegant way.

The only way that I can think of doing it is to have three duplicate images lined up that scroll in some fashion, then when an image goes down far enough, it moves back to the top (off screen). It'd appear as one single thing sliding down infinitely, but in reality it'd be three images that are constantly being shuffled back to the top, but this sounds really messy to me. Do you have a better way?

Metroidvania. You will get new moves that have multiple purposes in combat and out. That boss for example is supposed to be the room you get the Ice-Block, which can be used as a stepping stone, hit enemies with, and block projectiles. The 3 weapons also modify your fall rate, like using Ice attacks makes you fall slower, and using Lightning attacks makes you ignore gravity, so using aerial attacks to avoid attacks is a thing.

Well the game idea for it is that there are these creatures that normally only come out at night, but lately they have been coming out earlier and earlier, hence the sunset. As you proceed throughout the level, the sun goes down more and more which makes the enemies more difficult. Some basic combat and puzzles.

You will need to split somehow with people if you're not just straight up hiring them. And many people aren't willing to work for just a tiny %.

People dream big, they imagine that if they all 12 work together on an amazing game, that it will make millions of dollars. That will just not be the case.

Even if the game made 1 million dollars, splitting it over 12 people would only give you 80k.

I've got this .gmk Game Maker file from an old game I made. The current version of Game Maker uses .gmx files. The current version feels like cancer and when I converted the .gmk to .gmx, it fucked up all the coding and it can't run.

chiptune: vopm for mega drive stuff, for 8 bit chiptunes I just use single cycle samples and a sampler.

Orchestral: too many to list, but basically get yourself kontakt and a bunch of good libraries, cinebrass, Spitfire strings and berlin woodwinds (+ a few percussion libraries) is a good place to start.

If you're planning on making your next big game, you don't go to fancy parties every night. My lifestyle is ok, i guess 10k a year is not that great when i think about it, 13k would be much more alright and realistic (so 6 years then when you plan to make your game in 4 before thinking about funding and stuff)

You probably already paid your tools (like engine and shit) or you're a good programmer and already made them yourself.
I can do music and FX, so i won't need to pay someone for that.
I can do art to some extent. But maybe in that department i'll need to hire an artist, it'll cost for sure.

Because if you think about it: assuming you'll have 5 years (to round it down) living with 13k to 15k a year. You can make something in 4, finishing to 80% of the project. Assuming your gameplay is awesome and music/FX serves the game very well. You art is not perfect, but that's where you can make a campaign to raise fund with the incentive of hiring a good artist to perfect the placeholder art.

Doesn't it sound like a good plan ?

Is there a standard for how you should do things for kickstarter? Is it best to just promote your game while developing it on blogs and shit until you reach a certain point, and then throw it on kickstarter?

I just want to mess with my old project, fix some bugs, add some shit. It was decent for one of my first projects and I want to make it what I truly envisioned since I have more knowledge.
It was a game about getting your friend out of jail, but it turns out all the guards are bullet hell bosses. Enemies would spew out streams of bullets, but you could counter with three weapons of your own. Rocks, which destroyed the bullets but did very little damage to anything. Shurikans, which reflected bullets and did medium damage. And your switchblade, which had a short range but almost always insta-killed.
It was a game that I made just to see if I could actually make any games at all.
Shame I hardly have made anything since.

How's the performance of Lua? I have prior experience with JavaScript, and I know that if it's a little bit complicated, it can take it's toll on the resources. My game written in C++ usually eats 2-3% of CPU, while Firefox can take a good chunk of 10-20% usually when I run my JavaScript game. I would like to know how Lua affects performance like this?

As I see the Lua API, it basically opens, reads (does something) and then closes a simple text file every time I want to run a script. But this would happen in every time step, wouldn't it? Isn't it also a performance killer?

Basically I would like to know what experience do you have regarding Lua implementation, and if it's worth it or not.

it opens the script file, processes that file into bytecode for the lua VM and then that bytecode in memory is reused over and over to execute the script

Lua is known for its performance. Are you using Love2D? Because I'm not sure about Love2D API's performance specifically, but I assume it's pretty dang fast. You can also opt to byte-compile Lua, but it just means faster load time, not execution time.

I'm trying to add a main menu/title screen to my game. The problem is I wrote a bunch of code that automatically creates your characters and assigns all the input and stuff immediately when the game launches, so now I have to figure out all the different places that handle that stuff and move them into a function somewhere.

I got it so it actually looks through the camera instead of spawning a character that ends up falling immediately, but I can't quite get the mouse to work yet. And all my keybindings are still doing stuff, so if I hit escape it opens up a second menu.

Depends on the type of game and your personal workflow. In General, a one-man army will do better this way, but this is not always the case. Flip-Flopping between the two is how most indie devs do it.

If your game is procedurally generated however, yes in 99% of cases.

Are you trying to spawn in within the menu and after the menu loaded you hit a button so you are in the game which causes the menu to re-appear while you are in the gameworld?

If that's so, just make it a custom function and dont put it into void start(), or better.. disable the menu on button click so that it wont be loaded.. like disable the component script.
