and no, i have no plans to do VR at this time.

its time to do some AI that's not retarded now.

In an attempt to make the player know that a projectile can be reflected, it flashes. Also if you reflect the projectile at point blank, you get hit by its explosion, but so does the boss. This combination attack seems to have no issues at all [in a set of 2], so that is good.

The scary thing is, getting a game greenlit now is easy as fuck.

I know 3 people who have done it, and not one of them made a particularly good game. According to steamspy one of them had their game sell 1600 to 2600 copies. Which is basically nothing.

You can fly and was flying before, trying to fly back home while carrying a good shirt you found to eat.
But couldn't because some flying jerk came along (an owl or bat) and tried to eat you.
You escaped fortunately but injured one of your wings and lost the shirt you was going to eat.
You end up crash landing in a unknown location with a broken wings, an empty stomach and no known way to escape.
You now have to journey across this large world in order to re-encounter said jerk and win back your dinner and dignity.
But that's just my opinion.
>>
>>152607331
>"we evolved and our bodies got too big"?
Nah, you could say that they aren't technically wings, or they're derived from wings but now serve a different purpose. What I'm thinking is communicative purposes, like showing off beautifully-patterned wings to the opposite sex or spreading them to look intimidating or tucking them back as a submissive gesture to make yourself look small and non-threatening. But especially the thing about large and pretty wings being attractive, sexual selection is a powerful evolutionary force and most features that are cumbersome or are significant but serve no survival purpose are a result of sexual selection.
>>
>>152610563
Then that is a personal issue. You got to overcome your laziness.

>>152610731
Do you need to have a caret? I would have it hidden until a numeral is placed because while it says, "Enter 4 digits", it is practically useless to even have it shown.

If you must have a caret how about a default value that is not shown but is removed once you enter the first numeral. Then have it re-added if they're are no characters.
>>
>>152610731
you just need to reduce the initial text so that it doesn't occupy two lines like it does now
>>
>>152608320
Thanks anon.

>>152610589
I can't do that. I'll have to learn how to draw, even if it takes years to get my artistic skill up to a suitable level for the game. Might end up doing a smaller scope project eventually though.

jumping looks perfect, you better make a ledge grab. i love games with ledge grabbing mechanics.

my only complaint is the turning is a bit stiff. i only noticed it because the rest of the movement is so fluid. maybe make the characters torso gradually lean into the turn with a bit of jostle/bounce in the knees when it stops turning or stopping after the walking animation. i think the smaller movements in animations really sell the a character design.

check out Jak 2 aniamtion or ratchet and clanks animation. i think those are kind of the gold standard for non physics based animation.

You can still use the wings to jump and glide you know, they are now just too damaged to ascend and fly properly.
You don't even need your wings to jump, just use your legs.
And simply spreading your wings open without flapping them can let you glide.
Have some imagination will ya?

What is the best way to handle/deal with "tiled" maps? At the moment I just have my map loading in from a 2D array that contains strings ("0", "1", "2', etc) to tell the game what kind of tile it is, but I feel like that's kind of an amateurish way.

I'm using the program "tiled" to make the maps, then exporting and reading the map as JSON, but after that I'm just shoving it all into a 2D array. It works, but maybe there is room for improvement?

I got an email from an anon last night about using my music which reminded me I should post this every once in a while

I have a diverse collection (4+ hours) of music that I always offer for free to /agdg/

https://arcturus.bandcamp.com/

Browse through it and use whatever you want. No one has released a game using it yet, much of it was made for games by anons or a small video game company that never got released. If you release a game using my music, I will take it down from free download if you give me credit in your game.

Feel free to ask me for recommendations for tracks that would fit well based on atmosphere or some adjectives

Without sounding pretentious, become code literate. Making a vidya is out of your scope until you learn how to program (well, that's not strictly true. Toby Fox made a mint from Undertale and he did that all in game maker and doesn't know how to program - but that's just one of those things.)

But for the most part, start with writing simple little programs, learn your basics (if's, loops, functions, etc) and go from there.

I don't think you need justification on why she can't fly. Those wings look like they can support flying very well. It is more of a cape.

Also if you still want to have a lore reason the quotes posts are still valid. Just because it is damaged doesn't mean you can't jump or glide.

Don't make a design document. If your game requires a design document, it is probably too complicated for you.

Just make a simple idea with a simple genre. Something you'd find on newgrounds and try to complete that before you work on a bigger project.

If you can't make a newground esque game then your TPS/FPS is gonna fall apart before you ever finish it.
>>

>>152617447
Depends on your perspective

It might seem pretty convoluted and makes no sense at first. Digest all the tutorials and beginner training stuff you can. Eventually you will realize that GameMaker is absolutely fucking primitive in comparison.

I used to love GameMaker. But then YoYoGames decided to put all their resources into stupid bullshit like a shitty asset store and what is basically Steam for games made in GameMaker. They're more worried about maintaining and improving support for fucking Blackberry when they should be updating their ancient GUIs, the absolute garbage room editor, and improving GML so that it can hold a candle to C# or Java. Fuck that company.

Meanwhile Unity has a slew of advanced 2D features and a superior 2D physics system built-in. Also there exists no better tool for UI development then what Unity provides you with. If that's not enough, also consider the fact that C# is actually a real programming language, and the skills you develop while working with it in Unity will be more beneficial to you in the future.

>I used to love GameMaker. But then YoYoGames decided to put all their resources into stupid bullshit like a shitty asset store

Also, the room editor is hot garbage. But most of that can be modified through code...

The room editor is, hands down, the absolute worst part of GML. For something that's so crucial to developing a game, you'd think they'd do better about it.

From what I understand, most people just code their own editors.
>>
>>152618735
Having experience with GML is utterly worthless in the long run. Switch to Unity, learn C#, study real programming and design patterns. GML will teach you nothing about polymorphism, inheritance, etc. That experience is valuable because you can take it with you outside of Unity. This is why the guy who made Undertale will be stuck making GameMaker games the rest of his life.

Ultimately it doesn't matter if you switch to Unity or keep using GM because the end result is what's important, not the tools. But if you want to grow as a game dev or as a programmer in general, you'll have to leave GM behind eventually. Especially since it's obvious GM and YoYoGames are going nowhere and only care about how to maximize their profits.

Not too bad really.

However, the anon who is doing the recap currently is doing alright, and usually shows up.

this would be really hard to do well. it would be hard to convey things generally and a completely top down view of a character is always weird.

hotline miami pulled this view off well because everything you needed to know was conveyed intuitively in really well made densely packed micro levels that you learned the layout of quickly due to the nature of the insta death. people only complained when the second one had you dealing with loads of shit off screen and the levels were twice as big.

so find a way to do all of that with an RPG or skew the view.

Honestly I would recommend against reading any straight up monogame (and by extension XNA) tutorials that are end to end or a 'my first game' sort of deal; they teach a lot of bad habits. Start with baby steps and then every time you don't know how to do a specific thing, try and find a tutorial or explanation of that exact thing. Limit the scope of the tutorials you're looking for or you'll get lost and frustrated.

Start by creating a blank project.
Run it, understand how the game is being constructed.
Then, implement a basic game loop with a sprite showing until you press esc.
Then, implement keyboard movement for that sprite.
etc

You know, I would love to do all of the things you have described, but (it's kind of embarrasing) I have absolutely no idea how to do it.

I have finished multiple (multiple hour long) videos on C#, I understand them but and do what they do step by step and repeat them if I dont understand.

I just can't wrap my head around what I should do next. When I read something what I could try to practice, I have absolutely no idea how I should go on about doing it. I read things like "implement a basic game loop with a sprite showing until you press esc" and I have no idea how to even begin with it.

Any suggestions on overcoming this?

Yes. Make sure you don't allow your anxiety of the unknown to halt your progress. I guess the first question is, do you understand how to program?

If you don't, you should start by understanding basic programming fundamentals, or you should switch to a complete engine quite like Unity or UE4.

If you do, then the first thing you should do is familiarize yourself with some of the most important parts of the Monogame framework -- which is easier said than done because the documentation on the site sucks, so you'll basically have to learn by buying a ticket to the intellisense bus and riding it til its last stop.

First, make a new project, then look through what is automatically generated and find any objects instantiated from a monogame namespace (it might also be xna namespaces). Try and follow the logic along to see how a monogame program is started, how a window is created, etc.

Then move on to Spritebatch, google around for how to use Spritebatch to draw a sprite to the screen.

Do I understand how to program? I honestly don't know, watching videos everythings seemed very clear and logical to me (and I even have a little bit of experience in web development). I started reading a book on programing as well.

I dont want to use an engine like Unity or Unreal because I want to learn how to program and not how to be fluent in an engine. I chose C# because everybody says its a good beginner language.

Thanks for the help

They are tiles like any other, their shape doesn't matter at all to Tiled since all the logic related to that is handled by the game. I do pixel-perfect collisions based on masks so I can have tiles of just about any shape.

Yeah I'm planning to do something like that, once I've figured out what sort of attacks there'll be in the game in the end.

They were actually supposed to be pinecones, but I'll change them to something that's easier to read in due time.
>>
>>152628267
I wouldn't really pick a project and try to do it, I would pick a topic and learn about it, then try to implement it. Just go through a university's syllabus for a few courses and pick topics and read a little about them - depends how much you know already. Read about overloading and implement it in a subclass where the parent class has a function with the same name, and then add an == operator to the subclass. Learn how to modify the linux kernal in a virtual machine, and then add a custom system call. Learn about threading, and then write a program that forks itself and passes data between each process. Learn about scanline rendering and write a program that renders a triangle on screen, pixel by pixel. Learn about free-form deformations and implement a small program with play/pause/rewind buttons to deform an object over time.

Granted not all of this stuff will help explicitly with game development, but it will help make you a good coder. I think game development is much easier now that I can choose my tool out of several to solve a problem, rather than having to figure out if a tool exists to solve it.

Depends on who you know, I'd guess. I asked a friend of mine once how much he'd charge for a couple songs and it was on the order of about $200 per song, depending on length and complexity. If you're hiring freelancers I'd guess at least double that price for quality work, or it could be free if the musician is a friend and just wants exposure and you're not making a profit on the game. There's a lot of factors to consider.

If you meant licensing pre-existing music, I'd guess on the order of thousands per track.

It's definitely something where you just want to do as many different things as possible, and as much as possible. You want to know everything there is to know, and you want to have the experience from having tried (and failed) everything. It took me years of professional programming, after graduating university, to become good enough to use Unreal Engine without having to worry about whether I can do something or not - now it feels like I can do anything as long as I think critically about it.

This is my last music post of the night, but I went ahead and uploaded a 10th album of all of the music that's been sitting around for years without a home

https://arcturus.bandcamp.com/album/broken-bits-unreleased-incomplete-2012-2016

You may find a place for it, especially if you've checked out other albums and haven't found anything. A lot of these were just unreleased or incomplete, but suitable for background music. I have a ton of music up for grabs in all of my albums, if your game gets released anywhere just credit my artist name, email me the track titles, and I will remove it so it's not downloadable

i only play a few games of overwatch a day (20-80 minutes) a day, i still feel like its too much. its honestly a waste of time and isnt enjoyable most times. people who play single player games to completion on a regular basis should just kill themselves.

if you need stimulation, you can do a hundred things while you dev some are more distracting than others

watch a tv series( no subtitles )
read a book (when youre not devving)
music(duh)
podcasts ( personal favorite )
nature sounds ( never tried it )

if youre playing a game, it has to be some type of release of stress or relaxation or research. seriously dont play single player games to completion. competitive games are good because you can play in short sessions and work your brain a little

I'm curious how games like Oblivion and Harvest Moon implement daily routines for NPCs. I was going to have the NPCs tied to the map like a lot of games do, but then I realized it couldn't work that way. Does it keep track of where the NPC's location and where they are going in the RAM, even if you're not in the same map or what?
>>
>>152633689

you cant play single player games for 20 minutes.
you can hop into a game of (not moba) for a short period of time. have fun (maybe not) and move on to your art/programming/music

single player games require too much investment. and the point of online games in this respect isnt to GIT GUD its just to have some gaming in your belly. if youre playing fucking final fantasy whatever for the 3rd time or fucking uncharted or some dumb shit like dark souls consider your entire week gone heck maybe even a month. i bought dark souls 3 and mgsV recently and barely put any time into them. theyre fun games but i dont have the time to sit there and fuck around. theyre not games i want to research either. if i was going to pick up a single player game now it would be devil may cry or some crazy beat em up. because it relates to what im working on. otherwise. a few games of 3rd strike will do me well in the long run

It's a weird change of events developing. Aside from guilty gear the last 30 games I played were on either itch.io, some sort of ludem dare or demo day event, or were posted in this thread.

I don't really play games that aren't really classified as indie. The last game I bought on steam was made from someone who posted here (Uncanny valley).

I think it's one of those things you take pride in the work people put into it and you want to support them and you genuinely find these games interesting.
>>
>>152633689
In some cases, the position and state of offscreen NPCs can be recreated from just a schedule of where they should be and some bitflags tracking what NPCs are still alive, but for something like Oblivion they just store it all in your save file. It's not actually that much data since they don't need to save the meshes or voices or anything.

software engineer here

It's probably a mix. There are set "routines" they go through, probably with branching paths. Their locations and/or relevant information are updated cyclically in RAM but only in a non-memory-intensive, and when you are nearby they use more resources because you can see them or they do the actions on screen.

e.g. a merchant does sales and it is all behind the scenes computation each day, but when you are nearby you see them going through the motions and they may take more specific actions

Sure if by single player games you mean wRPG's and by online games you mean casual stuff like TF2. Meanwhile industry standard playtime for single player campaigns is 10 hours and more and more online games are being made so you can't actually have any "fun" until you invest 50 hours into learning how to play.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying an online game casually once in a while but single player games are the only way to get unique experiences.

I finally got around to making collision detection in my engine (C++/sfml). I thought of making a sort of "collision layer", which is built of nothing but invisible rectangles, right triangles, curves, or whatever else, and their sizes can be whatever I want.

Would it be wiser to keep those collision shapes separate from my general-purpose objects, or keep them as being the same?

This calms my autism.

There was a guy back a month or two ago who had this idea to make what he called a "line game" where the player plays a city builder sort of game, but the twist is that their city builds waves of combat units that have their own AI and walk in a line to the enemy base until they either join combat against enemy units or can fire on the base. Apparently this was a niche genre back in the day that disappeared.

With that AI maybe you could make a game like that except set in space?

Pretty much, I started at the legs with a 6-sided cylinder and built my way up. The style is shadeless + low poly, so even manually smoothing it, it'll still look enough like the concept art.

It has idle, walking and attack animations currently.

The walking animation is kinda crappy, but holy shit animating this ain't easy. My artist is busy with irl stuff, but he has done rough sprites for bosses so I can start to code those in later today/tomorrow.

I hope we can make it to demoday.

Guys, I'm trying to make my own platformer collision code and I got my engine to find out which "solid" tile was closest to the player's bounding box in relation to the direction they were facing (up, down, left, right), X/Y handled separately.

However, when I implemented jumping, I noticed that there is one frame which the engine is checking if there's a solid tile above the player the moment they start jumping off the floor. This causes the player's y position to be set exactly under the floor, which is not what I want to achieve.

Is there a particular order I should be doing these checks? It's been causing me headaches for the past month now.

I recommend reading the book Morgan.Kaufmann.Real.Time.Collision.Detection.Jan.2005.ISBN.1558607323

you can easily find a pdf googling.

Also I would take a brief look over the source code for bullet and get some idea of how a physics engine is organized (not too in depth, just browse through the dynamicsWorld and CollisionWorld and CollisionShape classes and the main functions).

To answer your question simplistically, you usually have a broadphase layer made up of simple shapes (AABBs, oriented bounding boxes) generated from your more complex geometry (eg. meshes or physics collision hulls). Your broadphase detection would generate a pair list of colliding entity IDs and you would iterate through the pair list to do a more rigorous and computationally intensive collision test on the contained geometry. Your simple bounding shape proxy will probably hold with it a pointer to the original shape for quick access during the pair processing stage.

What I did is have the game create collision in the same function that creates visuals, with a subset of the same parameters. I store the collision boxes in an array which is stored in the same structure that holds the visual information. I did this similarly for level geometry and enemies; I might end up doing the same for enemy attacks when I implement those.

Well, it's sort of an array. Lua is weird about data structures. Any sort of collection of data can be treated as an array or an enum or a struct of sorts or a union with some work or indeed a class with any level of inheritance. It's like the philosophy of weak data typing applied to data structures.

imo, instruments aren't everything. Focus on composition first.

Consider starting out covering some of your favorite songs either using General MIDI or FamiTracker/NES waveforms. Try to balance forming a style absorbing things you like with studying the "anatomy" of music known as Music Theory.... Like approaching improving at art, you know?

If you can't make a composition sound interesting with cheap instruments, I don't think you'll be able to get much to sound good with better instruments (unless you're strictly going for ambient sounds, then study up on sound design).
>>
>>152644154
that looks very solid for a game that's only a day old, with good animations and nice tweening considering it's programmer art

>>
>>152645342
>>152639067
As far as writing a theme.... Try to approach the song more like "How do I want the player to feel at this moment" rather than "what does the scenario look like."

I guess this approach how we ended up getting music like Ice Cap Zone from Sonic 3 and Let's Go Down The Wine River from Super Mario RPG.

the biggest problem with your AI right now is they don't avoid eachother so they have L4D2 syndrome.

consider either distributing the swarm behaviour differently or different enemy types with eradic movement.

faster red enemy that rushes you and explodes unless taken out at a distance

blue enemy that also teleports

yellow enemy that when shot breaks up into smaller yellow enemies that figure 8 around the player

small weak mutant purple enemy that latches onto green enemies and increases their health and movement speed so you have to kill before it does.

large slowly advancing enemy with large breakable physics barriar/shield thing you have to chip away at that weaker enemies get behind when it spawns.

the purple enemy latches onto the player and reverses the controls for a random amount of time(mash X to get off).

etc.

look at other games enemies and adapt them for your mechanics.

So far what I wanted to do and what i'm doing keeps wildly switching around. But the core of the game would be more or less what you said, minus the diablo part. Just an arcade-y action game. I guess crimsonlands would come to mind, if someone was twisting my arm to give an example of what i'm going for.

Ye this is what I was thinking about aswell. Showed the progress to a friend and he suggested I just use boids for this kind of game, to have more interesting behaviours. Thinking if I should do it.

As far as enemies of different archetypes, I wanted to implemented the large slow ones, blue enemies and red enemies. Again I just need to practice abit more with actual AI behaviour. In the webms I posted the enemies mostly just clump up. Had a few implementations where they charge and do other stuff, but it looked awful. I'm having a hard time with the unity navigation, but it's because of my lack of experience.

Well good for him. There was nothing stopping anyone from downloading assets from the asset store and calling it a "game". He had a good idea and implemented it with free stuff.

The thing is, people don't care if you spent hundreds of hours on your own model, or if you got the model for free and animations from somewhere else. The whole point is placing it into a niche idea and then marketting it as the best shit ever to a very specific market. He targeted the weebs AND the youtube clickbait shitters with one game. Surprisingly, weebs have alot of money to throw away, while the clickbait youtubers give you reach and publicity.

And so this is how he will make millions for zero effort. There's no reason to be upset about it. If you really want to do the same, then think of an interesting idea that appeals to the demographic and just implement it.

It should be already common knowledge that to be a successful indie, you have to go for pandering ideas, since it's the only way you will complete a game and earn money to continue. You shouldn't do huge serious projects, unless you do them completely for fun, have the resources or just enjoy torment.

Make fun small simple games, target a niche market. Stop being afraid to use open source and generally free shit.

Surely you're talking about the other guy (who I'm not familiar with) and not Toby, right?

Toby did pander to a more casual audience recycling assets and design ideas, but the way he did it was so novel that it basically became its own thing. Video games are an art, and Toby used his inspirations to form a new "style" of gameplay. (Shmup RPG, 4th-wall-breaking by remembering stuff most games normally wouldn't, etc)

Check this out if you have time. https://youtu.be/OkDnEe6og0w?t=8m29s (I happened to be watching this when I saw your post)

>>152647801
"Different reasons" being what makes you part of 2 different fanbases, as opposed to being the same fanbase, i.e. Bloodborne and Souls. Even if the name and setting was different, BB was obviously aimed at the same players as souls. (Of course if some players liked one more over the other, or some preferred the faster version of BB that's an entirely different matter.)

>>152648080
People think they deserve something because they put hard work into it. Everyone should realise that you need to put any kind of work and focus on a specific direction to get results. Again, yanderedev being a good example.

I honestly believe almost ayone here could be successful, but they have a bad mindset on what they want from a game (or a good mindset and they simply do not care about money and just want to gamedev without pandering).

You want money? Then make a game that makes money, not a game that is good.

>>152648685
Right now all my skills are just defined with an enum. Then in my HUD class I hard-coded a name and description for each enum value. The skill-checks themselves kind of have to be hard-coded and they're scattered all over. Chest's Interact() function takes in a character and checks their Disarm Trap skill. The status effect Tick() function, when having the In Water status effect, checks the Swimming skill. The GetWeaponAttack() function checks Sword skill, etc. My spells are also stored as an enum, but they map to an array of function pointers. So I just call general CastSpell() function that automatically calls the map and triggers the appropriate function. You could do it with a scripting language, or try an object-oriented approach, but honestly I don't think it really matters unless you want people to be able to mod in spells or something. I do store NPCs, Enemies, Items, and a few other things in Data Tables though.

Serviceable enough.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I love character creators and always wanted to make my own with 2D art. Similiar to portraits in JRPGs or VNs, and I was wondering: what program would you recommend to make quite the detailed character creator in?

I only know a bit of Ren'py that's all.

Should have rolled it into the trash.

So how do you guys deal with making temporary assets? Lots of Boxes? Or just do a bad attempt at art?

Are your family being shitty to you because your "life plan" is to be neet and make games?

You could learn programming and get a decent job in webdev or something, move out, and then make games for fun.

Don't let your life revolve around shitty games.

How much programming experience do you need? And do people really pay to have someone make a website for them?

Unhide. It.
>>

It's hard to quantify programming experience. But go to >>>/g/wdg to learn about webdev.

I started off making games for fun, now I'm shitposting from my desk at work, at a webdev job I got with no degree or commercial experience, getting paid more than anyone else I know.

Making games is a hobby, and fun if you're not hoping to earn a living from it.

Burn the wings. Give it a visual reason if why you can't fly. Maybe even implement it into the story.

Shaders can do that, too.
