Does anyone else feel like the extremely high level of emotional intelligence and insight into character provided by extensive reading of visual novels is starting to negatively influence their own human relationships?

Every time my friends tell me about their feelings my first instinct is grimace slightly, because so often their feelings are more simplistic and base than the most shallow of visual novel characters. I seriously had a friend rave about this girl he met, and his dialogue was word-for-word the stuff every dating simulator protagonist has ever said about anything. Needless to say, I called him stereotypical and he looked pretty hurt. After explaining how everything he's feeling has been felt a hundred times over, and is really as banal as the hunger one feels for breakfast, he seemed to cool down but I dunno if he's gotten over it. Another time I heard my parents arguing (I still live with them) pretty hotly, and it was obvious the subject they were so fervently disagreeing over was trivial and they were just letting emotions control their behaviour like children. I spoke up and explained how to resolve the problem (using some integrative complexity) and the fighting stopped, though they didn't seem to pleased with my intervention. Shit like this is really making it hard to maintain relationships. It's like I'm a hundred years older (and thus wiser) than everyone else, which makes all this feel like I'm attempting to maintain friendship with elementary schoolers far below my emotional intelligence. All my "real" friends are fast becoming those of similar intelligence to me, which frankly are just the characters written long-dead authors and eroge scenarists. I feel like this is a dangerous road to walk though, what do you think? Should I watch some hollywood movies and cut off books/vns to dumb myself down? Or continue to grow in maturity and intelligence, isolating myself from my boorish peers?

The game's reviews seem fine enough, but one has to wonder what expectations Frontwing had for the game.

The complaints are somewhat legitimate too. This can't be a runaway success like Nekopara since it doesn't have anything to set it apart yet (aside from LOLI NIPPLES), and the episodic nature of a completely new series will probably turn people away until the other parts come out.

I dunno. Maybe Frontwing has too high expectations for now, but the game does need better word of mouth, at least.

When you get used to it, it's really not that bad. The main thing that's lost to an amateur's eye is that each kanji is composed for the same 100-some radicals so it's basically the same as an alphabet system with four times as many letters. No matter how you look at it, having a different symbol for every word is just stupid. We're not talking about letters in an alphabet here, it's completely different. I know about radicals, it still doesn't make sense since you have to learn every separate kanji AND its meaning AND its readings by heart. And of course you can't exactly figure out how to read them based on the way they're written, either you know it or you don't, whereas even if you find an English word that you've never seen in your life, you'll most likely be able to take a guess as to what it sounds like. German or Italian are even better, the worst that could happen is you get the stress wrong. In French? You WILL be able to read it perfectly, stress and everything.

Learning the 2100 commonly used Kanji is a snap because they're used so often they're get ingrained in your heart. Not a big deal. The shape isn't a big deal because radicals make it as easy as remembering letters in a word. The meaning isn't a big deal because you'll be learning a lot of words with it which is easy hints. The readings are admittedly somewhat of a challenge but just by learning common words and having experience it'll work out more often than not. Not to mention, there are such things as radicals which determine how a kanji is read, so it's not uncommon to know how to read a kanji you've never seen before. The words people fail to read correctly is really about as meaningful as someone mispronouncing a word in English - not a big deal in regards to fluently conversing and understanding a language. Like I said, anyone who has experience with Japanese won't think of kanji as any issue at all, they work fine. If you wouldn't get so heated and instead actually learned about the language and thought about it calmly then you'd see that too.

This is all putting aside how beneficial (not essential, but beneficial) kanji are when it comes to distinguishing homonyms and well they work with a particle based grammar system.
