I want to make a game that runs in a terminal emulator. Is ncurses my best bet or is there some other way I should do it?

Definitely J-Pop, but leaning more towards the cutesy Bubblegum Pop that some J-Pop artists are known for. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu does songs like that from time to time, compare Lonely Rolling Star to Kyary's song Tsukema Tsukkeru. Yukari Tamura was also pretty well know for making "dreamy" sounding cutesy J-Pop before she got into voice acting more.

I would like to create some sound effects with FamiTracker, but the last time I touched music and sheet music was ten years ago. Which notes would make a good jump sound, arriving to the ground sound, getting hit sound, and I probably would need a typing sound when the text is being written.

I added a bunch of enums to blow out the list to see what happens and it's the best case scenario. Scrolling isn't even annoying because it waits for you to click the arrows to move the list.

It's probably not a good idea to do this unless you're making a bullet hell though

He has a point. Most movies and games don't understand women. Most women characters are just men with tits. If your character can be male and it doesn't make any difference, then you are just baiting for semen. But the same goes for men: most of the time no "manly traits" are examined in the story. The characters are just empty shells for your imagination.

My favorite good example on this subject is Alien 2. The main lead has to be a woman, because then the whole "being a mother" subplot would be meaningless and non existent.

However on the opposite side, Fight Club wouldn't work with women. They are just not the type who wants to revolutionize things, since they rather seek comfort and safety in the things they know.

Female sexuality revolves around a feeling of security and safety rather than pure aesthetics... hence why there are so many >tfwnogf threads on /fit/, the only extra attention they get is from fat girls and gay men.

So as sickening as it is, you'd actually have to make a game WITH A STORY that reads like a shitty romance novel (also known as porn for girls), in which the average-looking male would somehow make the girl audience feel all soppy... which is way more effort than just drawing some tits on your character.

There are licenses you probably have to take care of at corporate level and what not, particularly if you use specific decoder or encoding technologies. It's mostly America-only stuff, though. I recommend using .ogg or something for gamedev purposes because it doesn't have similar headaches.

As far as I know, MP4 is free to use (though not sure about exact conditions), but using patented H.264 technologies is gonna cost you.

Thanks anon. Additionally forgot to mention that if the hookshot hits a ceiling or wall, the player character will stick to that spot. Yet to implement, but he will also snap to grab ledges if you shoot near one.

After I'm done with base functionality for the hookshot, I will also test a twin-stick shooter setup (with mouse+keyboard support, too) and see which one works better for the game.

This is bullshit. The problem most writers have is that they try to shoehorn 'woman's issues' or try to 'write a woman's story' with a female character instead of writing them like a regular person.

The track editor is partially working. It can spawn track pieces and align them with the track piece the player is standing on, this will allow me to build tracks very fast, which will save me shitloads of time.
Now i have to fix a bug where the player gets stuck between track piece colliders even if they are perfectly lined up, but so far the project is progressing well.

Try and find an era in fiction where a male character being mean to a girl wasn't used as a tool for establishing him as a bad guy.

After coming away from the thread for a few minutes I have reconsidered my position a little. The competitive/supportive difference between men and women does come up in certain situations: picking a mate; larger, life encompassing goals etc. However in normal every day interactions the differences are negligible. You got variables, they store values that you can use later for stuff.

You got arrays, which are lists of values under one name.

You got your if statements, which let your program do something different depending on what the variables are.

You got your loops which let you do stuff lots of times without writing the same shit over and over again.

You got your functions which are just a bunch of code that you can run whenever you want and feed in different values.

You got your objects which are just a bunch of variables and functions stuck together.

You got your classes which let you make templates for objects so they have all the right stuff in them and you can create them easily.

You got your interfaces and abstract classes and all that other shit which stop you forgetting to put stuff you want in your classes when you make them.

You got your libraries which are basically just code that someone else has written that give you a bunch of useful classes and functions and shit to use in your code.

You don't even need most of that shit to get started. You can do plenty with just variables, if statements and loops.

Mouse to move, left click to shoot, right click to bomb. Because it's time consuming to restart when you're just trying to see the levels I've also enabled a couple of cheats: press 1 for free extra lives and g to skip the wave. I recommend not touching g for a more authentic experience.

When there's an orc, people know that they are watching an orc. It's a made up character. But when you look at men or women in film, you will imply things. Because you don't see orcs in real life, so it's the film's task to establish for you what an orc is. But when you see a girl, since you have seen girls before, you have assumptions and prior knowledge about how women work. Just like physics. If things don't fall downwards in a film, they have to explain why that's happening, since that's something out of place.

Thus, when a woman acts manly or a man acts womanly, that's usually the focus (or at least a sub plot) of the given story. If it doesn't serve the story like this, it has no point. It's just like having one black guy to stay PC.

And these things fucking matter.

Look at Mario: typical fairy tale story: knight saves princess from dragon. Why? Man usually spend their lives to impress women. It's an every day thing we see adapted in a childish environment.

Now let's change it: what if the princess saves the guy? It can happen, of course, no doubt about that. But tell me: could you sell this story without anyone saying: "the twist of this story is that they have changed the roles"? You can't. Your story will be interesting because it's something we usually don't see, but we are interested in it to see how you explore this idea.

Now let's go full liberal: what if the genders doesn't matter at all? Your hero is not a girl because you want to explore this idea of changing the roles, but just because. It simply doesn't matter to you. But then, if it doesn't matter to you, why are they even people? You can just replace them with cubes if their gender roles doesn't matter.

Progress
Rewrote the weapon and arm scripts.
- Arms now move/aim correctly
- Weapons move/aim correctly
- Weapon script is now more modular
- Can't shoot while dodging/dashing for muh balance

However for some reason the bullets now explode in mid-air unless I aim at a specific angle. Which is super weird because I didn't touch anything that could cause such a change( bullet prefabs, layers tags)

Also added some low-poly roads I found in the asset store to give everything a sense of scale. Didn't work.

This is why so many female characters are shit, especially in video games. Men and women act differently, have different cultural expectations and different life goals.
Treating female characters as gender swapped male characters is precisely why we have so many ridiculous, one note female characters, especially in video games. You have to strip out all the cultural, sexual and behavioral elements that are only appropriate, but you can't usually replace them with female attitudes and behaviors, because the core outlook and social standing of the character is male. So you end up with a bland, personality-less stereotype that is either tediously butch or overcompensates with superficial, over the top "female" idiosyncrasies, while still being a male character at the core.

The reality is that in the context of video games and action oriented movies ARE BORING, because they can't fit into any of the primary character roles without taking on male characteristics. Or more to the point, people who like video games and action oriented media think that women are boring. Realistic, layered female characters fit perfectly into non-action genres like drama and mysteries, but these sorts of genres don't translate to video games and aren't as popular with male audiences, ergo we will continue to have male-female characters.

I drew some enemy concepts for lewd jam The one on the left is the common enemy and the one on the right is an elite enemy.
I'm having trouble coming up with a good color palette though, the only thing I know for certain is they're wights so they'll have light blue skin and white hair.

There is no project. This isn't my 'idea' project, I want to find some people and think the project up with the team from scratch. It's for the sake of practice, and maybe having something to sell/put in our portfolios at the end of it.

Here is a mockup of the battle I made.
The game would be about a girl and her dog falling into an alien world, then they get those shadow monster thingies (called Wraiths) that they use to fight other people that also have them in that world.
Enemies don't attack your character directly, they hit your HP bar, hence why it is damaged the more you lose HP (I'll add numbers to the bars later)
There will be timed hits for combos and defense and other stuff too, making the battles more active.

Why the hell am I a guy and not a girl? How did a group of internet friends, from across the world, that I have been hanging out with on IRC for years, recently turn out to be, to everyone's surprise, made up of like 60% gay people?

There's no reason in real life and there should be no reason in stories. This is actually a way to build verisimilitude, or at least worlds that feel real to people who know how varied and batshit-weird real life can be. If you make a character a boy/girl/etc. to explore something exclusive to the experience of being a boy/a girl/etc. then sure. Otherwise, after you've got the narrative purpose defined, come up with the character's traits before you come up with their personality, and justify the personality later, maybe by toning it down or intensifying it a little. Actual incompatibilities are extremely rare; humans can be really fucking odd.

You don't get featureless green cubes when you remove genders, you get personalities and interests and drives and flaws and dislikes. These are all slightly distorted through the mold of nonexistent-to-medium physical/chemical differences and major social rules. If you limit personalities and roles to specific attributes to 'not break suspension of disbelief because otherwise it'd be out of place', that's not verisimilitude, that's just you pandering to a public that feels uncomfortable when stories get as varied as real life without some nonsense "justification".

Except it isn't. When you're writing fiction, unless it's a very realistic piece of work, societal norms and rules aren't as important. Especially if you're writing a story that takes place in a fantasy universe. Yes, in our culture women being aggressive is very frowned upon, but in a fictional world things like that don't matter unless you write it that way. Even if you're writing a work that takes place in reality, if it's more comedic or less serious women can be as violent as anyone else: see, every tsundere ever. In the real world that would be domestic abuse, but in fiction it's just a joke.
Thus, when you're writing a character, this shit doesn't matter unless you're trying to be as realistic as possible. A female character can react to situations as a "typical" male character would with no problems, and vice versa. The important things is that you write a good character: gender is irrelevant unless you've made a setting where it is relevant.

If these are true, how do you explain the facts in that post? Physical violence against a partner -- especially if it's initiating and one sides -- is obviously extremely aggressive. If women aren't supposed to be 'like that' and don't behave in 'that way', then how do you account for this?

I know lot's of you aren't willing to say anything negative about your lord and savior but enough is enough, Josh has blatantly abandoned his backers and supporters and gave us all the middle finger. I'm sure a moderator is going to either delete this thread or lock it but I don't care.

I've been following this game for the past few years and I thought Josh was a pretty genuine guy and was a breath of fresh air in the sea of garbage being pumped out by developers on a daily basis, but it seems like Josh has no plans on ever updating the community that practically worships the guy and it's pretty disappointing and frankly shameful. I know Josh had some mental issues a while back but that doesn't mean he gets to never say a word to the community again and especially the backers that gave him money in advance.

I hope some of you start to realize this and face the facts that hope is fading away and I honestly think Josh pulled a fast one on us. Anyways, I guess there's no point to bookmarking this website anymore and moving on.. I was really looking forward for this game and I truly liked Josh a lot but, he knows what he's doing.

In the same fashion the 'fantasy' warrior woman trope is equally formulaic and abstracted. Fantasy warrior women are another notoriously two dimensional rote stereotype that have been accepted because of repetition and the lack of interesting female archetypes in the fantasy genre.
If your character isn't a completely generic stock-character (e.g. tsun-dere, warrior woman) with a bunch of cliched behaviors guiding it, then no you cannot defeat cultural moores with a fantasy universe. A female character that doesn't fit the warrior woman cutout, but is verbally brash, emotionally insensitive and physically inclined will be viewed as a negative character by your audience, while a male version could easily be a virtuous hero. You can believe what you want to believe, but you will never be a good writer unless you separate ideology from how audiences actually perceive characters.

Testing out how combination attacks work right now. The idea is that the boss does different attacks depending on if it uses the core, or hands. In higher phases it uses more than one segment at a time. Fire Pillars + Right Hand seems a bit too hard to manage right now so I'll have to adjust it before I move on. However regardless of the x value, it will return without reading the code. If I put the second block of if statement before return it will work but return is still being ran somehow. ECS are nice, because of how modular they can be. However, you can easily make a game with inheritance and OOP, and it'll run fine. ECS is a fairly modern way of handling entities. Older PC Games, Indy and not, probably did not use ECS, and just stuck with memory pools.

2hu and Cave Story come to mind when I think of Indy games that were developed with OOP and Memory Pools over ECS.

When an enemy is destroyed or goes off screen, my removeEnemy code marks all information about that enemy as nil (so I can reuse it later).

However if createBullets is ran for an enemy that no longer exist it will crash, obviously because the enemy doesn't exist. The solution I found so far are either:
Check if the enemy exist, if not, create the bullets at coordinates outside of the screen. Which seems like a terrible solution.

The other is to check if the enemy exist BEFORE running createBullet which is fine but now I have this if statement before every single fire function.

If I can't figure out how to get this to work I'm going to just go back to having the createBullet function not ran by the levelScript but the enemyUpdate, which is less convenient.

I used to work as a programmer from home, i basically worked 1 hour/day and slacked off the rest.
I was only payed minimum wage but it was like being paid for being neet almost...
I thought it would be the best thing in the world and it was great but after couple of years i grew more and more depressed as i sat at home watching anime and playing game while i watching my 20s slowly slip away realizing i was literally wasting my life... but at the time i knew i will never be able to do things i would actually really wanted to do in life so yeah.. you will lose either way

I've been having this ethical dilemma in my mind for a while now. I know I want a musician to make music for my game, but I haven't even started programming my game. But music also inspires me to work harder.

Basically, at what point in development should I get a musician? The earlier the better for me because the music will inspire me and help me make artistic decisions, but at the same time most musicians will probably only want to work on a fairly well polished game right? Not an ad for musicians I'm just genuinely curious.

usually musicians need to get a feel for the game to be able to produce the correct kind of music and impart on it the right quality. AAA studios achieve this through concept art and highly documented story/features which gives an artist enough material to go on.

Therefore, I'd say you should wait until you have something playable and with the right mood to provide the musician with the required materials for that musician to know how to focus his efforts.
