It makes sense for Capcom to do a multiplat portable plus console release like all the other hunting games on PS4 and Vita. 3DS is now being dumbed down to a spinoff console just like PSP before it.

There's a 50-50 chance this year's MH is going to be on PS4 and Vita with the 2 million target. The other possibility is MHXG which /mhg/ doesn't want, but I wouldn't mind since it will be free.

It makes as much sense for them to do a PS4/Vita multiplat release as it does for them to do another 3DS/WiiU release; the Vita has no more life in it than the WiiU does, and the 3DS is a better 'successful' platform for Monster Hunter than the PS4 is.

Neither the Vita nor the WiiU make any realistic sense, though. 3DS-exclusive, PS4-exclusive, and every-living-platform-simultaneously are the three realistic options, assuming that we're leaving NX off the table (which I'm okay with; that's a different conversation).

3DS-exclusive makes the most sense of all; that's where the fanbase has been for five years now, that's the platform where they have a shitload of ready-to-go assets to recycle without worrying about whether they need to be spruced up for a more powerful platform, and that's the only realistically viable extant platform for a Japan-focused game. The only disadvantage to it, really, is that the 3DS is nearing the end of its lifespan, and is in a pretty big decline, particularly outside of Japan.

Multiplat-everywhere is the next most likely, but runs into a number of problems. The main one is that the game's baseline has to remain the 3DS, which in turn means that all the other versions are going to look like high-res 3DS games (with a few extra lighting/shader bits and bobs, if you're lucky), which in turn means a pretty depressed reception on any platform that expects a higher visual standard. The second is that it splits the userbase, which could lead to dead communities on at least the non-3DS platforms, which hurts the franchise, and could well not even make back the multiplat development investment.

PS4-exclusive is the dark horse possibility. That would rely almost entirely on being able to more than double the western userbase in a single installment, while basically pissing off a large, guaranteed market in Japan who want it to be portable. That's the long and short of why that's unlikely to happen.

PSP -> 3DS was a lot more palatable to the Japanese audience, even if I'm sure it annoyed some of them. Japan liked the PSP, but they liked the DS even more, the PSP was ending its life and the 3DS was beginning. The other option would have been to stick with the PSP until they could jump ship to the Vita, and to be perfectly honest I think that Capcom saw the writing on the wall for the Vita long before it released (it never really had much of a chance).

I'm a little bit skeptical of an MHXG, but to be honest that's got less to do with me actually having an argument against it than it is with me being a little bit of an autist about the franchise's release patterns and being kind of skeptical that the'd release four mainline games in a single generation without just going straight to MH5.

I don't really have a strong opinion one way or another on whether I'd prefer MHXG or MH5. I didn't say that I don't or wouldn't accept MHXG, just that I'm a little skeptical of it. I can see either that or MH5 releasing on 3DS to a tepid 2m sales figure, if Capcom is being pessimistic about how much the 3DS market is going to contract by the end of the year.

The other possibility, though, is MH5 on the NX. The report saying "Monster Hunter Title" is dealing in fiscal years - specifically, the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2017. That would fit with being an NX launch title, and the relatively low 2m sales estimate would fit with what they would expect out of a game launching for a platform that would be starting from a userbase of zero - and those lower sales might be palatable to Capcom if Nintendo is offering them a sweetheart deal for helping to push a new platform. I'm not saying "This is definitely what's happening", but it's at least as plausible as a PS4 release.

Regardless, yes, 2m shipped copies of a game in the launch window is a pretty big upward stretch. It's a similar, if not greater, upward stretch to imagine those figures coming from any form of PS4 release.

At the same time, 2m shipped copies is a pretty big downward stretch for either a 3DS MHXG or a 3DS MH5 - the only reasonable accounting for that that makes sense to me is, like I said, if Capcom is anticipating a large contraction in the active 3DS userbase this year. I haven't been following sales trends enough over the past year and a half to really speak to how quickly it's tailing off in Japan (and personally, no, I'm really not tired of the 3DS as hardware; I'd probably prefer a 3DS release to anything else because I'm not in the mood to buy any more branded video game boxes).

The OTHER other possibility (that I don't know actually is a possibility, but I admit I haven't read Capcom's financial report in full to know if this is off the table) is simply that the 2m figure is their estimate for Monster Hunter Stories. That's in line with the (pretty intuitive) idea that Stories is going to sell significantly less than a mainline title, but also significantly more than a low-rent spinoff like Monster Hunter Diaries.

People always talk about this report as though Stories couldn't possibly be that title, so I assumed that it was definitively ruled out, but if that's not the case, that would actually fit more with what they're saying than any of the other possibilities being tossed around, whether they be NX, 3DS, PS4, or whatever. I would imagine it is, though.

If not, then I stand by my previous post: They're most likely either being pessimistic about a 3DS release, or optimistic about an NX release. I don't see room for PS4 anything.

I've been saying the entire time that those are the two most likely explanations, with the only other remotely plausible one being an NX launch MH5 - and I've also said that I'm not hitching my wagon to that one or wishing on a star that that's what it is, only that it's the only reasonable option outside of a 3DS title.

MHXG 3DS or MH5 3DS are perfectly reasonable possibilities. I'm fine with them as far as making financial sense on Capcom's part. God Eater was in JP so I didn't get far in it.

Freedom Wars was SOOOO GOOD but I played on deployment so couldn't grab dlc or online multiplayer.

Toukiden was shit at the start and killing 30 monsters for 20 quests made me drop it.

Ragnarok Odyssey Ace was fun, but the level up system for monsters was odd and I couldn't see my equips far ahead in leveling as they were super rng different.

Final Fantasy Explorers was good but had heavy fps drops if you had two players. Can't even consider four.

PSPVita is way better than 3ds as a system, but the games are just worse.

They're right for this one, though. Getting white from blue is like 12% more attack. Compare it to AuL which for most top upgraded weapon, adds only 10% of raw. It also need only 15 points compared to AuL's 20. Leaving it like previous version is just overpowered.

If we were back at the beginning of the year then the chance of MHXG to PS4/Vita MH will be 95-5, but being this late into the year, MHX being localized, no MH title announced yet this late, Nintendo not attending TGS and Capcom didn't specify that it's a 3DS title like they did last year, then it knocked the chance down to 50-50. It's the same thing they pulled back in 2011.

Sorry if most vita games are bad overall? I spent about 800 usd on the vita series and got maybe 80 hours gameplay with 35 on Disgaia, 5 on Curry game (I love mystery dungeons), 30 on Ragnarok ACE, 2 on GE, 2 on Toukiden and 50 on Freedom Wars.

Now on MH4U I have about 250, 3U is at 500 (I lost the game and rebeat the whole thing), 180 for Rune Factory 4, 140 for Pokemon X etc etc. I spent maybe 600 on 3ds games and I own 4 3ds (pft)

You can get Sharpness+2 easily with mixed Esurient R and Storge set, which one of them couldn't be gotten yet because it's hidden behind DLC. The jewels are irrelevant once you get those sets. And if anything, the skills is much better than AuL, since you got not only increased attack, but your attack will no longer be bouncing on most monsters. It makes sense for it to be harder to get.
