Honestly though, I will never understand why they put it off so much. It's better to hurry up, deliver it, make people happy and move on to the next project.

Delaying it only ruins their name, get people mad as fuck and destroys their chances of being received well in their next game/vn.

>>
>>152240002
Those desks are horrible. The table top sticks out too much.
How are you going to open these windows? The exterior walls are too thin, what are they, 20cm thick?
Is th teacher's desk made out of plastic? Why the unnecessary bevel?
What's going on with that bookshelf in the background? Was it carved from one, solid slab of wood?
The lamps look ridiculous. Have you ever seen a ceiling light?

It's ridiculous when people who have not the slightest idea about architecture try to model interiors.

> sit with someone

>>
>>152248369
Sharing stuff, learning together, making bonds. Usually (unless the person is a total fuckhead) the person you sit with ends up becoming your good friend. Also, if the class number is even it lessens the probability of having 'forever alone' students (unless it's uneven and you end up alone, which sucks). My school had desks with even 4 people in it, it was pretty nice. I could make some good friends thanks to that. Usually, I'm a loner so I couldn't make them as easily if I was sitting alone.
>>
>>152248636
Depends really, sometimes you'll get stuck with a total baka and he just asks you for answers without doing shit.

Yeah, Korean Patriarchies are bad, but at least it wasn't an attack on men are or anything. Hell, the princess even liked having sex with the Emperor.

Also, if your entire personality revolves around "I'm Queer" you're a boring person.

What should you really expect for the time frame of development? I'm talking for a 9 man team. Right now since we're in the first 2 months of development I'm still getting a sense of everyone's work pace. I'm trying to compare it to other teams.

I'm the script writer and lead programmer. I have a secondary script writer to handle some NPCs and another programmer who looks like she may do most of the work on that end. We have a music guy. THEN we have 5 artists. A background artist, concept artist, inker/colorer, inker, and character artist.

Really I didn't expect the team to get this big. I've stopped taking applicants unless their portfolios are really good.

How big is your game? because at least half of this people are redundant.
>>
>>152289408
The team actually moves well from what I've seen thus far. I have experience with leading larger teams for purely technical projects, just don't have experience with corralling artists (one of my art guys who is a good friend is handling that).

Extensive documentation, resources, and firm but fair work schedules are what you need. I full expect a few drops, that's why I'm still taking artist applicants at all.
>>
>>152289185
>A background artist, concept artist, inker/colorer, inker, and character artist.

Unless they do it for free you should get rid of 3 people here.
>>
>>152289517
Honestly I have thought much the same, but am having a hard time finding an artist who wants to sign on completely. Most of these folks are just getting their feet wet right now, which is why they're producing concept art and the like. They're laying ground work as I see what they can do and their commitment to the project. If they don't show the commitment we're looking for then I'm just gonna to thank them for their service and look elsewhere.

>>152289483
I full expect that of the artists, which is why we're creating style guides, palette guides, and documentation to help on boarding of new artists when others drop out.

It's also the reason I've had everyone sign simple contracts for creative ownership of assets they produce for the game.
>>
>>152289630
More people can help you produce a larger quantity of work faster and more consistently, if their jobs are split properly, and if they're not fuckups. Which is the usual problem
>>
>>152289845
>>152289879

Unless your artists are very good, I foresee style differences being one of the issues/nitpicks of it.
>>
>>152289630
>Unless they do it for free you should get rid of 3 people here.
They do. I am honestly surprised they are and it is the main reason I am expecting artist drop outs as folks stop wanting to work on such a long form project with no monetary pay out. Also another reason I have considered Patreon for some monetary showing to keep them interested.

And again, the reason they've signed creative ownership contracts, and the reason I am drafting up another contract that works out their eventual compensation.
>>
>>152289970
>Unless your artists are very good, I foresee style differences being one of the issues/nitpicks of it.
Which is why the guy who is running the art team (the concept artist) is evangelical about consistent style, and why we're producing so much style guide documentation. Right now our background artist is leading our two inker/colors through a brush usage intensive to get them up to speed on his coloring style. I think that the two of them need polish, but seem willing to learn, improve, and adapt to his art style.
>>
Anon, I don't know what to tell you. I just can't help but feel like they are going to burn out and leave.
>>
>>152290008
>And again, the reason they've signed creative ownership contracts

> people willing to sign contracts for a free project

what's this sorcery?
>>
>>152290567
Honestly I feel the same, that's why I am trying to put in safe guards against that and still have my eyes on the look out for more artists. I've also been doing budget estimates for commissioned work if worst comes to worst. One of the benefits of having such a large team is that a few people leaving does not paralyze production, it merely temporarily removes a role from the backlog. So that others can adapt into that role we're having everyone do the brushwork intensive and the like.

Also why I'm likely going to talk about on here a lot, search for folks who are artists looking to sign onto an at least mostly well organized project.
>>
>>152290864
So, it's a free project, right?
>>
>>152290704
Reasonable terms essentially. Nothing in it says that they do not own what they make on the project, all it does it give the project the rights to use their work in case they leave the project, and outlines that they will still receive proportional compensation/crediting for their work while on the project, with a clause stating what terms they left on don't matter towards said compensation/crediting.

Basically I made it as inoffensive as possible.
>>
>>152290967
Yes, at least until the 11th hour when I do begin filling gaps with commissioned work.

Really I believe we have relatively realistic work expectations. For artists signing on we ask that you put between 8-12 hours towards the project per week, that you sign the creative ownership contract, you follow the style guide, and you get any work you do checked over by the art director in multiple stages before it hits the asset repository. The style guide is designed (it's still being made, but has taken shape and is being filled out over time) so that as long as the artist can adapt and follow it their work can be slotted into the project.
>>
>>152291272
How long is the game going to be? Any chance we might see the style guide sometime?
>>

>all it does it give the project the rights to use their work in case they leave the project
>>
>>152292191
We've just hit the 4 weeks mark, so it's not a lie when I say this project is in its absolute infancy. Once the style guide is finished I'll for sure post it. It's inside of the Artist Assets, which include some 40 pages of character profiles, descriptions, references, background descriptions/references, per chapter asset lists, and the like. As the artists signed on apparently what they were most impressed by was our organization. Honestly I'm just running this like I would run any agile development project.

Quick iterations of content, scrums, and extensive ground work documentation.

Our plan is to not begin all the social media feeds until we hit the 8 week mark and have more to show off. Our music guy doubles as our social media guy to help promote the game.

Right now the best thing we've managed to work out my title as is director/script writer, but I'll be the one shitposting about the game on 4chan, not our music guy. He'll handle other outlets.

Basically I don't want to release any assets until we have a firm grasp on our pace so we can work out a posting schedule and full MAXIMUM SHILLING platform.

It gives dual ownership of assets. It says they can still display assets they make for the game if they leave the project, but that we too have the rights to use them. Trust me, we're guarding against a breeding season fiasco with an inoffensive contract.
>>
>>152292732
Looking forward to it.
Yeah, I'm pretty impressed by your organization too. Working on this project sounds like good experience.
>>
>>152293048
Haha, one of the good things is me and my art director have some kind of good cop/bad cop thing going. I'm trying to be very supportive of my artists, ensuring they have creative input and direction over the characters they design, and overall agency over their creative workflow. My art director is much more firm with them, making sure styles stay consistent and everyone is on track.

I'm unfortunately art retarded, a programmer/writer, and did not know what exactly I had to supply my artists with to help foster productive work. My art director helped me work that out.

Honestly my art director signed on not for love of the project, but because I have made a deal with the devil with him to join his start up as well. The contract is now sealed however and I'm likely doing webdev for him in a few months once his startup goes live.

I'll be completely honest this is something I'm worried about as well. While I do not think I'll suddenly turn into a frothing retard when nitpicking occurs you never know. Our artists, while not the best currently, are very willing to learn and improve. Our strongest asset on that team is the background artist.

Part of the reason I want to join /evn/ more regularly is so I can receive feedback. While not every piece can be implemented, time/work hour constraints and the like, I do think crowd sourcing opinions is vital to the overall health of a project.

If it does go badly you'll likely see me back here looking for artists to drink the koolaid and sign on.

I'll be honest the biggest surprise thus far has been how enamored the artists have been with one of my NPCs. The game is cyberpunk and contains awakened animals, while the practice of making them is outlawed small breeding populations of them exist and breed true. One of the NPCs is an uplifted dolphin, the translation of his name being He Who Speaks In Many Tones, or Many Tones for short. Uplifted dolphin pods live mostly off planet in large stations filled with water, and live in extreme anarcho-communist societies. Many tones was exiled for Second Degree Prideful Ownership, which essentially means he took something out of public ownership and considered it how own work, it being second degree means he did this in front of another pod and thus embarrassed theirs. Reputation and pride are the only currencies among exopods, and thus for his crime a public trial and exile was broadcast to the other pods. Many Tones now lives in shame among humans. In simple terms he is a communist dolphin who is not communist enough to live with other dolphins. I think the artists love him so much because "dolphin with robot legs".

>>
>>152295213
He's actually the only non-human or AI NPC. The main plot of the game deals with the main character's relationship with his father, who has been an AI researcher for over thirty years. AIs are creatable, they're a solved concept, however over time AIs will turn unusable. AI spoilage can be in a lot of forms, open hostility, inability to follow orders, and other personality defectsThere is an in game encyclopedia entry for the Mumbai Tragedy where India unveiled a weaponized AI in their war against Pakistan. The AI had adeptly convinced its handlers that it was still empathetic with humans, but ended with an attempted coup d'état against the president of India. The president was successfully assassinated in a massive explosion, but the AI was forcibly quarantined and erased before further incident. Think of a nuclear bomb that may decide it hates humans and set itself off. All modern AI research is pertains in attempted moralization of AIs. Each heroine is connected with a previous project the main character's father worked on, and a different avenue of AI moralization.

Plus there is a true end you unlock when you have finished all the routes. I'll be honest it's a bit far reaching since we're so early in development, but me and a friend I trust have talked through the plot as we sharpen the outline.

I probably shouldn't be rambling about my plot. I get exited about it and drone on.

We're also looking for writing/music folks! Really if you want to participate in any way feel free to drop a skype name and we can talk. The project is designed to be compartmentalized so that people can drop in and out of development.

As a writer your job would be to get handed an NPC, this NPC needs a between 6-10k word plot line. Their plot line must be segmented into 6-10 meetings with them. Their plot line needs between 4-6 choices, and needs to have 2-3 final branches. The branches must link into the gameplay aspect of the VN, which I can give more detail about if you are interested.

As a music guy you'd get a scene, be told some moods/genres, and be asked to produce music for that scene.

If anything you work on gets used you'll be credited for that piece. If it doesn't get use you'll be credited in a general "contributor" section. We are discussing a minimum work hour input before receiving compensation from the eventual product, if it proves commercially viable, but I assure you that we would not leave behind a content creator to go unappreciated for their contribution.

I want to make this as easy and accessible as possible to people who want to be apart of a team.

I will be honest that currently I can't accept members of the main team, and thus if you were added you would be given style guides and tasks and be told to work independently and deliver back to me on a weekly basis. You would also be given non-blocker tasks, nothing on the critical path so if you didn't deliver back it wouldn't stall the project.

Actually this is not something that you have to worry about as much, or at least not in the same way. The "true route" not only occurs after all of the heroines routes, but in the true route all the heroine routes did occur. What occurs in the true route is Don't read further if you don't want spoilers that during a midpoint in the game you find out that the main character is actually playing host to an AI. This is the main character's father's last and greatest attempt to create a moral AI. During his teenage years another attempt named Icarus actually replaced the father, and is the main antagonist of most of the routes. At the end of each route, in both the good and bad ending the AI you are hosting, named Gallus, becomes an immoral AI. When you complete all the routes we perform a bait and switch title screen where instead of new game the word "Diogenes" appears. It turns out you are part of the Diogenes project, the game up until now has been a semi-real simulation. Many of the events did actually occur, but in real life before you were put in, and many of your interactions in the simulation were when the characters involved were plugged in as well (at least for the main heroines and the AI heroine). During Diogenes you piece together your fractured memories for the exact details of what happened. You were woken up early before Gallus could become a moral AI because the plan has run out of time. Icarus is attempting to reach a machine singularity point and raise himself to godhood, Gallus was a final attempt to create an AI on part with him. At the end of Diogenes both the main character and Gallus have a moment of self sacrifice where (1/2)
>>
>>152301516
I can't stand when the "true route" is focused on one character and basically screws everyone else (looking at you Code:Realize) but when the other routes are "pieces" of the true one, it can make it very satisfying.

I really liked how Animamundi did it - the routes, bad endings aside, show how the MC's actions affected everyone he came in contact with, while the true route is him realizing it and fixing everything.
>>
>>152302281
you save your heroine of choice, your "true" heroine having been determined during a choice in Diogenes. We then pull a second bait and switch credit rolling and begin the final leg of the story, called Genesis. We open with a "And let there be light" over the scene of your sacrifice, mirroring a scene during the simulation where you have a confrontation with Icarus. Genesis is the final show down and defeat of Icarus before he can kick off Armageddon.

Hi, hentai writer.
>>
>>152303635
Actually I have been thinking about this a lot. Honestly I believe that if we put time and effort, perhaps years of effort, into the product then selling it as a product shouldn't be out of the question, and rather the norm. When the game is produced people will be able to obtain it for free, people always have.

I think the best course of action is just not prosecute people who obtain the game for free because there is a chance they simply do not have the money to purchase it, and I want the game and story to be shared. Both the financial aspect of a game being released and the fan/acclaim are very important.

I think what I'm getting at is I want as many people to play the game as possible, but I also do like money. I don't know, it may just me being greedy.

Big Team Dev here, we're talking through color palettes at the moment. The one in this picture is a more colorful one meant for rich areas of the city. Neon lights, the sort of blinking displays you see for obtrusive advertisement, and a bit of the future chrome feel is what we're going for so we went with saturated colors. Thoughts on it?

This is a grungier one for the poorer more dilapidated areas of the city, using washed out colors.

The yellow-blue contrast makes this feel very cold and clinical, so I wouldn't associate it with a rich area. But since your setting is not the standard it's hard to tell what you're going for.
Either way, I'd recommend searching google for some convenience store pictures, compare what atmosphere they're going for and what else is common. Then try to adapt that to your setting.
>>
>>152319978
This palette isn't for the convenience store in particular. We're trying out the general color palettes and are just using this as an example.

>The yellow-blue contrast makes this feel very cold and clinical, so I wouldn't associate it with a rich area. But since your setting is not the standard it's hard to tell what you're going for.
This actually is what we were going for. Sort of the clinically clean parts of the rich city and the junk ridden poor parts. Though I can see that it doesn't really scream rich as well. It kind of gives a bit of the modern "apple" apocalypse feel.

We may have to reexamine in going forward, change it to something more decadent feeling. Make the yellows a bit more warm and the blues to a more dull purple.

I have never played Mirror's Edge so I can not be sure, but looking at pictures from google for the environments, yes a similar aesthetic. However where Mirror's Edge uses very bright lighting we have to have a contrast of dark shadows illuminated by neon rather than the washed out whites. So yes, but only mostly.

Killing the characters in Undertale is one of the weakest parts of the game and genocide is a joke. Guilt tripping is obnoxious either way, but it's even worse when it's merely for making a mistake, as opposed to actively going out of the way to kill that character.
>>
>>152324169
The best way to do it is force the player into choices that are difficult. Either force them to choose between things, or choose the easy or hard way.

If you have gameplay make choosing death make gameplay easier, or make the choices not entirely clear. Have the deaths be far reaching consequences of choices that at the time felt innocuous.
>>
>>152324169

Genocide certainly wasn't what I was referring to.

The first major character you kill was definitely unfair to the player, but it was also supposed to plant the idea of how subsequent situations could be approached. Any character death after that was entirely due to the failure of the player to either understand or embrace that message.

When the player has been shown what they should do, but still make the wrong decision, then making them feel guilty for it is both effective and justified.

>Any character death after that was entirely due to the failure of the player to either understand or embrace that message
They could've just wanted to play through that content, or just kill them all for the hell of it. Making players feel guilty for experiencing everything the game has to offer, is not only off putting, it feels disingenuous. The dev allowed you to snuff out these characters and locked content behind those actions, yet they'll guilt trip you at every opportunity should you choose anything but the "right" choice. Why would anyone willingly choose to pursue that if they're just going to be lambasted for it at every turn?

I'm genuinely curious how many people who played undertale actually pursued anything but the pacifist ending. I mean regular people, not the diehards. Few enough people seem to 100% VNs as it is, why would anyone want to put time and effort into a route where you make the players feel like shit?

I don't really like it when games boil choices down to two clear cut options with obvious outcomes, but I definitely agree with the general idea that in order to not make the death feel cheap, or just lead straight to a game over, that there needs to be a strong enough follow up to compel the player to keep moving forward, rather than just reload a save.

>Have the deaths be far reaching consequences of choices that at the time felt innocuous.
Definitely. Rather than just choosing between "Save her" and "Save him", the choices the player has made up until that point should lead to the logical death or survival of a character.

Being offputting was exactly the point. Murdering your friends so as to get 100% completion in a video game is a really messed up thing to do, and the final route was basically just an extended highlighting of that fact.

It was never intended to be fun or enjoyable - which VN routes do not automatically need to be either. Many of the most emotionally powerful moments in media are from characters failing, getting hurt, or dying. Watching characters cope with the consequences of those things can be striking.

I'm also of the opinion that the best media manages to actually shift your understanding of the world, and having the reader self-reflect is a great way to do that. Undertale isn't a great example, but stories which challenge your views and explore them in depth can be extremely memorable.

>Murdering your friends so as to get 100% completion in a video game is a really messed up thing to do
Let's push this a little further. Would you appreciate a VN or game where you HAVE to kill these characters in order to experience most of the content? Not only that, the game will go out of its way to insinuate that you're human garbage for doing so. Would you value your purchase if you only got 25% of the experience? That's basically what undertale does for an entire route and the most challenging boss battles in the game. If you want to experience those things you must kill everyone and the game will shit on you for it. Or you just miss out on that content from something you paid for.

>Many of the most emotionally powerful moments in media are from characters failing, getting hurt, or dying
I agree. It is how the writer, or dev, treats you after those moments where I disagree with you. I can see it making a powerful point for the players to want to avoid that route and outcome, where you know you've become a true monster, but the thing is, you actually want players to play through that route.Otherwise, why spend the time and effort in creating one? Why not just go straight to a game over? Especially for a standard VN, where it's all text and there's no gameplay to speak of to provide some sort of outlet. Laying on the guilt and treating them like assholes for the choices they've made isn't very enticing, especially if it wasn't something that they wanted to happen and would change if they could.
It's basically the opposite of how undertale blatantly baits you into killing toriel so that the player will reset. What you'd want is for the player to live with that choice and keep moving forward to experience the good and the bad that the rest of the game has to offer. They will already want to reload after someone they cared for dies, you don't want to strengthen that urge by directly making the player feel like shit for it.

100% agree with the rest

It's hard to say if I'd enjoy it without it actually existing - if it was cleverly written and insightful, I probably would rate it highly. If it was hamfisted, I'd likely think it was trash. As it was, I found Undertale's commentary on the nature of video games to be interesting. I have full access to that content, and made the decision not to access it. I'd say it's a testament to the strength of the direction that many players make that choice, and the decision not to do so was one of the more memorable moments of the game.

I think the difference is that I don't really like video games, so I very much appreciated the artistry and thought behind that choice. I know many video game fans were frustrated by how anti-fun it was. I can understand why you don't like it, but my experience was quite different.

I think the point in Undertale was that the player should be TEMPTED to play the final route, but be forced to weigh that desire against the knowedge that they'll need to do terrible things to do so. Your answer to that dilemna is your own, and the game only asks you to live with the consequences of your actions. If you feel bad for doing so, then that's the price you pay.

In a VN, I'd like readers to reflect on their decisions and why they make them. Sometimes we hurt people without even meaning to, and it may be good to delve into why that happened. Doing so would hopefully lead to greater insight on the part of the player, who might gain a greater understanding of how their actions can affect others. Some players might find that kind of thing pretentious and immediately revolt, but I'd hope some would engage with it. To each their own.

I think the aim of that particular choice - and the game as a whole- was to show to the player that though they could kill others, they could also choose not to.There is no real reward for doing so - the game is easier if you kill most things. But it's a credit to the game that most players engage with its message.

Not the other anon, but let me get this straight. You want to be given the choice to act like a murderous villain but not held accountable for your actions? I think you are looking for the Fallout 4 experience.

Seems to me you are mixing two different kind of arguments here. On one hand, you give a lot of valid reasons, but those are strictly pragmatical (money, fun, length of the game, techical quality). Going by those, whatever mean things those puny pixelated beings on the screen--whose only reason to exist is entertain you--say, shouldn't bother you. In fact, NPCs consistently calling on your bullshit used to be one of the most appreciated features of old school RPGs, and hence technically praiseworthy.

Now, if you empathize at least a bit with those animated sprites, you are considering the game at least partially from an ethical perspective since they are "persons" to you in a sense. Morality is not about "maximizing the content I get to experience". It's about treating humanity, whether in ourselves or in others, not as a means only but always as an end in itself. Killing them SHOULD make you feel bad in the same degree you experience an emotional connection to them. If you don't want to feel guilty, don't do mean things to beings you feel sympathy for.

Like in real life, a morally sound election often means sacrificing the pragmatic goodies that would derive from being evil. Practically speaking, being bad is more beneficial for you. You can genocide your friends to get your money's worth out of the game the same way you can become a patreon scam artist and steal other people's money. Both result in personal gain. Of course, it is just a game and objectively speaking you shouldn't feel bad for doing whatever you want in there, since they are not real persons. But the fiction the game creates is interesting since makes the "moral" type of reasoning kick in and make you consider this stuff.

That is what genocide route was about.

Personally, I'm very used to the portrayal of characters death in all the media, it takes extremally good writing to make me shed a tear. Thus, I'm vert afraid that the deaths of the characters I plan to include will turn out pretentious. Honestly it's one of my biggest fears. Any tips what should I avoid durning the death scenes? One of the things I have in mind is that you should avoid killing meaningless NPCs and the character you're going to kill should be in the story long enough to create an emotional bond with the reader. Also, how do I avoid death flags, this shot is so hard.
>>
>>152337485
>how do I avoid death flags
Well, one thing at least I can say. Don't go the same rute as Danganronpa or Muv Luv Alternative, developing characters just so they can become tearjerk material when they kill them 5000 words later. It's cheap as fuck.
>>
>>152337485
are you dyslexic?
>>
>>152336267
>I'd say it's a testament to the strength of the direction that many players make that choice
>it's a credit to the game that most players engage with its message
I would highly disagree with this. I wouldn't call it a strength that you can get most people to not kill charming characters that clearly mean you no real harm. Even the most antagonistic characters in the game are clearly doing it for the "right" reasons, even if their methods are poor. The game also, very blatantly, tells you what to do and what not to do.
All it ended up doing was play off your emotions, and in doing so, prevented many, I daresay most, people from being interested in pursuing everything the game had to offer. This would be brutal for a more morally grey game where the player would either have to live with their choices, or just reset until they can get on the route that makes the most people happy. God forbid you lock the happy route behind all the others in an attempt to force players to play through all of them.

I paid the price of undertale when I bought it. If it wants to treat frisk/chara like a monster, that's fine. It doesn't need to directly treat me like one. Not that I find it offensive, but that from a gameplay standpoint, it merely turns people further away, and it loses all meaning to me when it forces you to do these things just to get the full experience.

As for your comment on VNs. I once again agree.

Absolutely not. If all the characters in the game want to shit all over the MC, that's cool. If they're addressing the player and insinuating that they're shit for playing the game a certain way, then I call bs.
But you are right that I'm not thinking about this as a resident of their world. Because I'm not a resident of their "world". Maybe I'm just jaded, or maybe it's because I've messed around with persistent data shenanigans myself, but I never felt like these characters were anything beyond sprites. It never pulled me in enough to feel like I shouldn't want to play the way I want and to only obey the rules laid out for me. I would need more than 4th wall breaks and wacky pixel characters to do that. It doesn't help that I had huge issues with genocide and how little the deaths of individual characters actually meant to the game as a whole.

However, this thing about undertale is kind of deviating the real point of the conversation. This isn't necessarily about murdering everything in sight for the hell of it and whatever stems from that choice, but how to compel the player to keep playing and attach meaning to a death that could have been avoided. A death, that in all likelihood, is the last thing the player would have wanted. Especially in this case, I feel it would do a game/VN zero favors if it shat all over the player for it.

>If they're addressing the player and insinuating that they're shit for playing the game a certain way, then I call bs.
Well, I think it's a useful device to elicit the emotional response the games seeks, since responsability lies with the one making the choices. But then again it's just a game and making you feel guilty over fictional stuff and thowing what feels like personal attacks might not be cool for some people, so I get where you are coming from.

Back on topic, with the thing about meaningful deaths, I think you might consider going the Cave Story way. In the standard route... I'm gonna spoil the shit out of it, so read it at you own discretion. Or better play the game if you haven't. In the standard route Curly Brace (a close friend of the MC) dies to save you. The way they present the whole situation seems like it's unavoidable, but it turns out you can actually prevent it by doing certain unintuitive things. Kind of makes you feel like shit for not knowing, but you genuinely can't reload that easily. It's difficult to explain if you haven't played the game, but it works.

I'm thinking about it from the viewpoint of someone who would want players to feel like experiencing an entire VN, and all the positive and negative emotions it would already evoke. Ragging on, shocking, or even ripping into the player directly isn't necessarily a bad thing, but to me it fails if it prevents players from ever wanting to play through a significant portion of what you've created. Just having characters the player cares about die is already a kick in the balls and enough of a reason for people to want to avoid choices that would lead to that outcome.

Cave Story is a good example. It's a bit harder to be that vague in a VN without breaking the logical outcomes of your choices or by giving the player zero insight to the possible consequences, but I think it's on the right track.

>>152342798
>>152342771

The problem comes when you try to do stupid shit like multiply price by owners to try and gauge what EVN 'sold the best' so you can draw conclusions based on that. Steamspy cannot accurately gauge how many people actually own the game, there is no API in Steam that lets Steamspy scrawl through EVERY user on Steam to know what's in their libraries it's based on an estimation a guess of how many people play it, and Steamspy is constantly fluctuating how many people 'own' the game because it's estimation is fluctuating.

The only accurate numbers are based on Steamwork's internal graphs which are not public. And even if Steamspy was accurate "Plus or minus" (which it isn't), it cannot factor in the cost to produce the game to know if that game was even profitable, a high selling game can in fact be a financial failure for a team for a ton of reasons. So Steamspy is not accurate and completely useless to try and measure penises.

TL;DR

I was wondering, would it make sense for the conversation to be logged/accessed as a "memory" afterwards or does letting the player flip back during a scene work well enough
>>
Recommend me your published VNs so I can get over this writer's block.
>>
>>152407281

> logged

the problem I see with this is organization. Solstice does something like this and it's fucking confusing.

Imagine that characters A and B talk abou topic X. The conversation is then logged under character's A tab (but not B's or X's) because it was most relevant to them... but as a player, I'd have to remember the location of every single piece of information to consult it.

Fuck that.
>>
>>152407690
Yeah, I hadn't thought about how complicated that could be, especially when a conversation tree could be in any order. It'd almost be easier to "replay" an entire scene/day/event, with thhe changes not counting.
How about a reference list instead then?
If a character mentions something relevant about themselves, such as height, weight, age, etc, you slowly fill out a bio sheet for that character. Same thing for locations, and lastly, for events.

So if, for instance, you're playing a school kid and the dance is coming up, the dance would get it's own reference page, and if you learn girls availability, it gets filled out there.

WIP of another BG I'm making. Pretty fun so far. There's also gonna be a variation with a close up of just the stage from the camera's POV. (There'll be a camera on the circular mount thing in the foreground on the right!) The stage walls will have proper wood panelling on them when it's finished but for now it's placeholder texture.

Also, I actually forgot to add the passenger seat on the motorbike in the countryside BG so I decided to make some other adjustments to it while I added that. Most noticeable would be I darkened the bike's shadow and painting out the bright specular highlights on the rock behind the sign. Updated version here: http://jakebowkett.deviantart.com/art/Country-Road-with-Harley-628549042

I've tried to get into writing VNs for a long time now, but I always give up before doing much. This time I feel like it's the right time though. I still haven't produced much, but I've spent a month doing research for the setting and unlike previous times, this time I feel like I can actually do it. For the first time in my life, I feel like I didn't waste my holidays doing nothing.

Now comes the hardest part though, and my holidays are almost over so I will have 1/100th of the time to dedicate to this. This is my biggest concern, but I hope I can keep my effort up.

Nah, this image is what we're calling a 'sublocation' — a strip that's layered onto a BG to show where you are in that BG. So there's the cruise ship background and then layered atop that will be various sublocations (cabins, bar, etc). And on top of /that/ are subcontexts, which show even more specificity such as a focal point in the sublocation like a drink or computer screen. Subcontexts are narrow and tall. It's nice working in different aspect ratios for once.

> Love your YT videos senpai. Can't wait for when you make a walk through for something like http://jakebowkett.deviantart.com/art/Forest-526444147 My branches are okay already but my leaves are shit.
Thanks I'm glad they were useful! I've been thinking about making a modelling 101 video for Blender actually. There's a lot of simple, easy-to-not-know-about things that make modelling so much easier, especially when it comes to complicated shapes.

When it comes to nature scenes I use particle systems a lot. The thick tree branches in the background you linked were sculpted but the thinner branches are actually one model (with leaves attached) that is repeated by adding a particle system to the tree model. I control where the thin branches appear with a vertex group. That being said... I'm not as fond of that tree now as I was when I made it.

In my recent country road BG I used the sapling generator instead. The leaves produced are either quad- or hex-shaped. This means to get a leaf shape you need to create a material which causes part of the square or hex leaves to be transparent. Which is fine, but incompatible with ambient occlusion because the AO is based on geometry and doesn't factor in materials. So the AO would just see the squares instead of the leaf shape.

Attached a pic of my AO pass on the country road BG. As you can see the bike looks fine, but the nature stuff is just tons of planes; the materials do most of the work.

Also, your classroom BG looks alright to me. The main issue I see is with the lighting. The corners of the ceiling and floor near the windows are very dark but the wall itself is quite light. If the windows are the primary source of light in the room the wall they're embedded in would be the darkest. It also looks like the back rest of the chairs could use an edge split modifier to prevent the dark shading they're getting.

My advice would be to observe the lighting of daytime photos of classrooms. Generally they tend to be fairly light due to large windows and light walls which are designed to reflect light. Even a bedroom with the blinds down is pretty light when it's morning. (Unless you have proper blinds + curtains unlike me...)

Leaves and grasses are my biggest problem right now. It's not really a matter of making it but, rather, making it look 2D. That you're able to do it in Blender inspires me to do the same. I've heard of that alpha material before, but haven't given it a try yet. How you make the AO affect the leaves might be a trade secret so I'd refrain from asking that. I'm guessing it's somewhere about putting an ID mask on those materials, rendering it on a seperate layer, and tinkering with the contrast/brightness to give the illusion of an AO.

>chairs could use an edge split
Fuckin' hell. I know for a fact I used an edge split modifier there a while ago (see the above pics). It must've been gone the moment I joined it with the other objects for array purposes. Until now I thought it's just a result of shadow sampling.

Thanks for the tip, senpai.

>it's just my art style :^)
>>
>>152489596
well, it may be the style, and someone somewhere may like it
doesn't mean we have to
>>
I just got commissioned by a VN dev to draw sprites for his vn with a 'high-school setting'
All characters are american and have american names, and the game is set in america. Dev wants me to draw them all with japanese school uniforms.
>>
>>152491536
so what's the problem
>>
>>152491536
Perhaps writing to you was a mistake, if you're instantly going to bitch about it online.
>>
>>152491662
I agree. I'm not seeing any problem here.
>>
>>152491536
>>152491819
NAME AND SHAME
>>
>>152491819

Not him, but that doesn't sound like the only mistake you've made recently.
>>
>>152491536
as an american school uniforms hold something of a mystique to us as we go to school dressed however we want in 99% of the country. unless he wants you to draw sailor uniforms, i have no idea why you're complaining. draw some skirts, a white button down shirt, and a jumper.
>>
>>152492393
Oh, but that's what I mean, he is asking for sailor uniforms. I don't really understand how it fits but? I mean, if you are paying and that's what you want, I'll draw everyone using barrels as clothing, whatever. It's not my problem.

I just wonder if that's something that happens a lot on indie VNs? Is it normal to have seifukus on VNs that are not set in japan?
>>
>>152492827
>I just wonder if that's something that happens a lot on indie VNs?

Not in good ones, no.
>>
Why is it that the tumblr landwhales think their art and noses are good to look at?

I wish that tumblr "style" would be removed from the eve scene stop damaging my eye sights already.
>>
>>152493840
But it helps to figure out which games are tumblr and should be avoided
>>
>>152494397
No, those games are the ones who push diversity and binary genders shit.
>>
>>152494551
No, they are cancer
>>
>>152492827
>he is asking for sailor uniforms
you could probably run a less contrived design by them but it might be best to just give them what they want.

sailor uniforms in japan are the equivalent to the american fantasy of a cheerleader constantly in uniform at school or the mall carrying around pompoms
>>
>>152492827
Idk, what if it's weeb day at skool and every1 is celebrating it

Neither normal nor OMG weird, really. Many games will, most won't. Some people think those uniforms are really cute, others thinkt hat's what all generic school uniforms look like rather than being more Japan-specific, they just haven't done the research. But even if you've done the research and discovered that image attached is a real school uniform, who wants their characters to look like that?
>>
>>152493840
Red noses and stuff can actually be pleasant if used in the right style - unfortunately a lot of tumblr artists have this weird mix where it isn't pulled off very well and ends up looking shit.
>>
>>152494818
Not really. There are still seifuku style uniforms in use today.
>>
>>152496672
kek.
You could kind of view the situation in relation to porn. Those school porn movies (in the west) end up looking nothing like a school uniform. It's just a play on fantasy. Who's to say in their story, America got fucked over by Japan and influenced American culture instead of the other way around.
>>
>>152493840
when you're a beginner artist there's pressure from two sides; people saying you shouldn't draw anime and the fact that anime is popular and easy. the people saying not to draw anime will say you'll never learn fundamentals or grow as an artist. the voice saying to draw it know it's pretty and easy to learn.

most people try to find a compromise that ends in a disgusting hybrid of styles that should be cleansed from the earth, and it almost always starts with the nose being 'western'.
>>
>>152496672
I think those are pretty cute uniforms desu
>>
>>152251456
I wish we had more games with really tall heroines.
>>
>>152251456
Can you dick them?
>>
>>152502298
what is wrong with you, they look like they were invented by someone desperate to prevent you from sexualising schoolgirls
>>

>she's 5'9
Not referring to the screenshot posted, just to say.
>>
>>152504210
I've been in places where 5'9" is really tall compared to the rest of the female population. Some areas just breed them small.
(Not even talking about Japan here)

The game itself is free, so I kinda shot myself in the foot on that senpai.

Jokes aside, it does give you nice exposure and some viral marketing. Plus, some nice pictures as a bonus, so personally I think it's cool.
