Just how does your looping code look?
I take it your pew sound is just a single pew. Maybe you're trying to do timing on the sound rather relying on something more accurate like letting all the samples play out and then setting your play-cursor to the start of the sound (or whatever)

Reposting from old thread:

Yo niggas, any of you familiar with SDL-mixer?

Basically, I'm making a small shmup in SDL2. The engine is almost complete. In the last days I've implemented sound and music with SDL_mixer. Everything works as intended.

BUT!

There is one problem. Every time I fire a bullet, the game plays the relative sound effect. Now, this is not the problem, of course. The problem is that if I keep firing bullets, every 2-3 seconds I can hear a small skip in the playback. Essentially, I hear something like this:

pew---pew---pew---pew---pewpew---pew---pew---pew
A
||
(skip!)

I tried messing with every part of my engine to try and fix this irregularity. I even built and ran the game on differents OS (w7, gentoo and void linux). So far, the only thing which improved the situation was changing the SDL-mixer buffer size from 2048 to 1024. This reduced the skip, but it's still there.

I'm going mad if I don't solve this problem. Can anybody help?

Thanks for replying. My looping code looks like the one on this page, where it says
>constant game speed with maximum fps

Keep in mind that I tried changing my looping code to the one used by the vast maiority of games out there (the "fps dependent on constant game speed" option in the link above). It didn't change anything.

I'm using any Timer function whatsoever. Basically, when I press the space bar, a bullet entity is created and a message is sent to the sound system, telling it to play the relative effect with Mix_PlayChannel.

I'm using Game Maker, and I store my tileset info entirely in a ds_grid. Then, based off that information, I draw portions of the background to the surface dynamically (so the entire map isn't drawn at the same time, and only draws what the camera needs to show) and do collisions based off my grid coordinates in relation to my tileWidth/tileHeight.

Top-left most tile is (0,0), by the way

I forgot to mention too: My levels are created in PyxelEdit (although Tiled is also a good alternative) which exports a raw text document containing an entire array of tiled level data separated by commas and linebreaks. Once I get my text parser to read that information, then it gets stored in the ds_grid.

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong docs. All I can find is http://wiki.libsdl.org/CategoryAudio mix_audio.
Looking at SDL source on github I can't find playchannel..

But mixaudio seems like a very basic function that does the same thing pretty much. Maybe try that?

Alright. Just keep in mind that I'm just an intermediate GM dev, this implementation may not be the best but it should work (and that's what matters, right?)

1) Keep track of score and multiplier somewhere. Here, I'll go with a 'control' object where I'll put:
global.points = 0;
global.multiplier = 0;
when starting a level.

2) Figure out whether your score boosts are static or percentage based.
Here I'll go with percentages: 30% bonus for matching weapon and 20% bonus for point blank. I'll and apply them at the same time instead of in sequence.
That way, a matching point blank kill on a 100 points enemy gives 100 + (30 + 20)% bonus = 150, instead of (100 + 20% bonus) + 30% bonus = 157.5.

3) Define your boosts, along with the multiplier cap, using the constants/macros window (e.g. SCORE_POINTBLANK_BONUS_PERCENTAGE is 25).
Also do this for the point blank threshold that defines just how close is point blank..
If you want these values to change somehow just use regular variables in the control object.

4) If you want different enemies to grant more or less points, give each of them a 'points worth' variable.

Here's some actual code for when obj_enemy collides with obj_bullet:
http://pastebin.com/NEEhbZjj

Tell me if you need to know anything else.

Same desu. I think it's just that as you get more experienced, making things like tutorial-tier platformers, moving sprites around and jumping them and such, doesn't humor you anymore. You need something of substance to feel accomplishment. I don't think it has much to do with choice of engine.

I actually used to be a novelist.

I am making a VN because VNs can have gameplay that require a degree of skill, and also the ability to make choices towards the narrative that effect the narrative is important for a more personal experience. Both with in dialogue choices and choice of what NPCs you want to advance the stories of.

it's a little late for me to be telling you think but the design on this thing is pretty weak
-even balance of proportion makes the form boring. favoring one element over the others size-wise would make the form more dynamic.
-lack of detail: the form lacks small details. if you look at a real gun, camera or drone you will see a lot of small shift in the form, material, piece transitions etc that sell the realism of your design.
-poor use of color: use color to accent the most important parts of your design. if this is an enemy, it's probably important for the player to be able to quickly distinguish which way it's looking and what sort of weapon it has. use brighter colors to draw attention to these pieces of info.

If the references overshadow the characters/things themselves.

If they don't feel like yours, then that's when you need to stop.

also excessive references can make you dependent and make you a shitty writer/world builder.
>>
>>152157562
They'd have to want to be making the most mundane RPG in existence. I guess now I know what to do if someone ever asks in the future. And at the very least, working with other people in the past has conditioned me to keep my code commented well and not-spaghetti in advance, so that's the saving grace there.

>>
>>152166064
A reference becomes obnoxious when someone can notice it without knowing the source.

If it's just a name or some imagery then it's fine. It gets annoying when people can notice 50% of the shit you're putting down is reference.
>>
>>152166064
I think the occasional reference is fine, but if the majority of your characters are named after other works, it'll get very embarrassing very fast. Consider using them for inspiration, rather than direct reference.

>>152166298
In the future you should probably just ask what kind of code snippet they would like, and how much.

They don't feel that way, at least to me. They feel like the reference add understanding to the origin of certain personalities/appearances/roles, but are not needed to understand them.

The Ship of Theseus character for instance is a person looking their sense of self as portion of their body are replaced by machines, and they are approaching 100% mechanical.

>>152166589
Here are some examples.

One of the character's appearance and obsession with the occult is in reference to Aleister Crowley.

Solomon's Demons is the name of a research project.

Diogenes is the name of another research project.

The Ship of Theseus is mentioned >>152166589

Meh, unfortunately, your opinion means shit. Objectivity is hard to maintain and you need outside opinions.

Your example though, could go either way. Just need to release samples and see what others think.

>>152166597
None of the characters are directly names after other works except 2 of the 18. That would be Aleister's first name being reference to Aleister Crowley. The other one is a guy who has named himself Nero after the mad roman emperor.

Most of the actual direct names are in reference to Research Projects, certain technologies, or AIs. Basically things humans named and the name describes the project.

>Resolution
>Scale
>Time Scale and Framerate (I think unity has this by default, but in game maker it can fuck you in the ass later on, read: hyper light drifter)
>Music/SFX Volume
>Difficulty

basically anything that should potentially be tinkered with by the user and that you'd otherwise need to rewrite completely

If he wrote his replies here the same way he wrote novels, he'd sound pretentious as hell. It's like how people on some TV shows don't speak the way we do in real life.

Especially Hannibal. Holy shit, I liked the show, but the stuff that came out of their mouths sometimes was basically poetry and complete unlike anything anyone would say in real life.

A game where you're playing a videogame with a girl you're trying to stealth-bang. It's split screen with your character's perspective of the room on the left and a view of the girl on the right. You have a button to mash to concentrate on foreplay with her, and a button to mash to concentrate on the TV game you're both playing. If you're too good/bad at the game (varies based on difficulty/girl you're playing with) then her suspicion meter goes up, but her tension meter goes down if you don't pay attention to her as well. Do it correctly and as the foreplay escalates you don't need to concentrate quite as hard on the TV and you have more control over the flow of the erogame.

I've always thought about making an actual game with that concept, but I've never really found a lot of appeal in 'actual' porn games, not enough to invest in doing a vertical slice at least

A person who is responsible and utilized their funds correctly. You can try to deliver everything, but of course some stuff might fall through, but as long as they're not core features that are missing, I think people will understands. It's best to be as honest and transparent about Kickstarters as you can. People are less likely to be pissed about delays or fall-throughs when they get regular updates that display progress. I mean, they still might be mad, but at least you'll have something to show that says "yes, I have been working on the game."

Why? It's segregated from any actual community, unlike Tumblr. Please at least follow tags on Tumblr. Even if they don't always like or reblog, they'll still see your stuff.
>you can have the blog in the same place as the project's website (e.g. www.yourgame.com/blog)
You can just have your site redirect to your blog, like any person with five seconds to spare would do. Also, as far as I can remember, you can change the domain name for a Tumblr blog so you might even be able to do that, anyway.

You CAN time the market when it comes to nostalgia. Eathbound, not Mother, is usually what people talk about with their inspiration. That was released in 1994, Homestuck (not a game, but Earthbound inspired) started in 2009, Undertale released 2015. So 15-20 years is the nostalgia sweet spot, then a million clones follow and destroy the market.

Start cloning or being "inspired" by a game from 2000-2003, depending on your intended release date.
>>
>>152171230
I think the only people who dislike patreon/kickstarter are devs themselves and they are the loud minority about it (probably from jealousy?)

The truth is that the average player is going to back or donate to a project they like no matter what other games flunked from crowdfunding in the past. Just look at the breeding season team, they are back at it again.

It's not that it's in RPG Maker, or the fact that it's metafiction. Like you said, a ton of RPG Maker games use meta stuff to great effect, like OFF.
But in this case, it's more about the combination of the player/character meta aspect, the talk-to-enemies system, the incidental dialogue for "talking" to a tree that feels like it's trying really hard to be funny, and the fact that there's a sad ghost enemy that you cheer up by telling jokes.

I'm not sure if knockoff is the right word, but I'm really getting a "we liked Undertale so now we want to do the same thing" vibe.

>but people can still post about your game on tumblr if they're interested enough
But then you have to wait around for them to do it instead of creating the posts and putting the content out there yourself. Why start a blog and then have it sit around, hoping people will look at it, instead of making one on a site with all the same features + a social networking aspect? It doesn't make sense.
>also, what kind of game dev community does tumblr have, anyway?
Doesn't matter how large or smaller it is, as long as it's there. When you're an indie dev, you need all the help you can get.
>I've yet to see a single reason to use tumblr - for anything at all (except porn)
You've given no logical reasons not to use it. If it accomplishes the same thing as a solitary blog on your site, with the added advantage of being able to connect to others more easily, why on earth wouldn't you use it? Because you're scared someone from the shittier part of Tumblr might reblog your stuff? Because the site has a "reputation" and for some reason that keeps you from utilizing every shilling weapon at your disposal?

The thing is a lot of people who can't code ask the wrong kind of questions, and do not take "that is the wrong kind of question" as an answer. Often when explaining these questions you'll get into the technical side of things that simply does not matter for their end.

When I go to my non-tech folks now I give them specifications for how THEIR bits fit into the code, and just say fuck explaining code because they won't get it really. You don't want to hear about me doing compression algorithms.
>>
>>152174595
>if their interested enough
Tumblr and twitter and other platforms let people see a constant feed of content, with next to 0 cost (time cost you dummy) to read or share. Real blogs don't have 1-click follow (I know RSS exists but come on man). There are 1-click twitter and tumblr share buttons on blogs. A non-tumblr blog will always be a destination, not something you scroll past

Have you heard of the concept of inferential distance? http://everydayutilitarian.com/essays/why-its-hard-to-explain-things-inferential-distance/. You might have a huge inferential distance from that article.

The things that coders actually think about when coding are high level abstractions, and having to explain the equivalent of 2+2 = 4 when explaining their code is mentally exhausting. A program COULD be coded in a straightforward procedural way, with no high level abstractions, and be more intelligible to laypeople. If you did that you're a shitty coder though. The value of good code is an abstraction that reduces work

>MySpace and Geocities
They're both mostly dead communities that don't offer blog customization to the extent that Tumblr does. If you're talking about the webhosting features on the latter, go right ahead. But they still offer a wider reach than a single blog floating on the internet with no connections to any social media, which is what you're suggesting.

It's not unreasonable to say that Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook are a good start for Shilling 101. No idea why you're so against setting up a blog on Tumblr if it does the exact same thing a regular blog would do except with more social features and a wider audience. It costs you nothing and could help a ton.

It has a wider reach than the places you've suggested. Also, it's got the kind of community that's more likely to react to your content: 13-30 year-olds who play games. Thing about how much more popular Undertale is because of Tumblr. Imagine having a hub directly on that site, instead of routing everything through your disconnected site-hosted blog.

If it's a small detail that isn't common knowledge in the field, but specific to their implementation, then yeah I agree it's a shitty explanation. A problem codebases can have, especially if only one coder is making it, is that small details can become part of common knowledge TO THAT CODEBASE, but not in general.

You just sound like someone making excuses to yourself because you're afraid that what you can make can and will never be popular. There are niches for everything, you are just making it obvious that you know you can't produce enough quality to be popular so you lash out at fandoms and niches you don't consider legitimate (they may not be, but that isn't the point).

That's one of the worst things about /agdg/. No one wants anyone to actually leave this place and become acclaimed or successful. Everyone makes excuses and forms an echo chamber that it is ok to fail. Everyone drags each other down.

Honestly I'm glad I don't prescribe to that particular movement.

it depends on whether automation leads to a socialist/basic income state, or to an even more unfair capitalist utopia. my money's on the latter, but I really can't tell.

95% of people will just plug into maximum pleasure VR porn sims.

the "art among friends" will probably be limited to whatever is left of the cultural middle class.

Look at the name of the general: amateur game development general. It's about development. We want to see your progress, your struggling from start to finish. We want to feel, that in the end, when your game sells thousands of copies on Steam, or gets billions of downloads from the Appstore, that somehow that's also partly our accomplishment. The same way you root for the guy at the Olympics wearing your country's flag, even though it's his hard work why he's there.

When you just come here, saying, look at my finished game, we don't give a dime. This site is not for advertisement.

>as long as the game is good
This can't be stressed enough.

You can retheme things like chess, monopoly, poker, risk, etc. You can write stories around the mechanics. Or change the playing field/pieces to suit your style. But the core of the game is so timeless, the setting is irrelevant.

The story/plot of a campaign is not 'the game'. It's the window dressing that keeps you engaged in the mechanics. It's all juice for the mechanic of bopping a ball against a paddle or balancing two numbers so that yours is greater at the end.

I'm sincerely curious about the kinds of games you find interesting. Not to shit on you or anything, but actually, genuinely interested. Do you dislike "silly" and heavily stylized games in general? Do you dislike Sunset Overdrive, which had a similar approach? I feel like gritty or serious stuff is often just as try-hard, on the other end of the spectrum.
>>
>>152178607
Not what I was getting at at all. Treating story as meaningless or window dressing is retarded. It's like doing the same thing for film, discounting a section of the production (sound design/script) in favor for another (cinematography). Actually that is a good way to liken it. It's like calling the script and acting window dressing because you're supposed to be interested in the cinematography.

While story isn't important for every game story is a big part of gaming. Story, Sound Direction, Voice Acting, Gameplay, Game Feel, Music, Graphics. All of these make up the whole. Making a game concept that needs one and just saying "fuck it, that's window dressing" is retarded.

Seconding the advice here: >>152178749 I'm a fucking dumbass and would never have learned how to code had I not gone to school and been surrounded by tons of people who could explain things to me in greater detail. Tumblr is just a hosting site. Your personal boogeyman using it doesn't mean that's all it has.

>>152178551
what? If I had to predict the future, it would be more of the same: the lowest classes are an active drain on society, there is a small and shrinking class (currently middle class and up) of people who are mostly secure and can have fun and waste time on thing like vidya, and a select few mega rich elite. Tech makes those last two classes smaller and richer, and the lower class bigger and less employable.

The result is a HUGE number of people that, if they dissapeared, would make the country net richer. It's unethical to kill them all, of course.

I don't think that a socialist state will happen, but in case it does, everyone has a lot of free time, and they plug into VR or make art.

and to clarify the VR vs art thing, which is the main point:

Assume a hypothetical basic income state.

NEETs are an EXACT slice of the future where 90% of people are unemployed and on welfare. You have no living costs and a small amount of spending money (basic income). You can do anything you want with your lives. Some choose to get high, hang out with friends. Some choose to make art that will be unseen. Some choose to immerse themselves in TV and vidya and VR. 4chan skews antisocial but you bet there are NEETs who go out with friends all day.

In the hypothetical basic income future, we're all NEETs.

Would you agree that this is subjective? What seems forced to one person might be organic to another. I haven't played Borderlands but I can kind of get an idea of what you're talking about. It's kind of why I can't watch some gag anime or comedy shows.

How about the numerous cases of socialist regimes that went communist and dissenters were either killed in the fucking millions, or fled to a country where they're able to achieve based upon personal merit instead of accepting their lot in life and dying in poverty despite their potential.

The notion that capitalism is 'unfair' is some next level retardation. To think that a system that lets you starve to death if you don't want to work, or get rich if you do, is unfair when the only determinant factor is your own ambition is dangerous mental laziness.

People can talk about crony capitalism, but I'm not going to entertain the legitimate argument from someone that actually thinks a socialist basic income is viable, preferable, or even inevitable. There will be massive civil unrest for a hundred years, little to no scientific/medical/engineering development. Because there's no fucking incentive to do anything other than masturbate. unfair is a loaded term, and I shouldn't have used it. I was using a mental shorthand

I should have said that it magnifies different inputs, and therefore magnifies inequality. I don't have any moral complaints about this.

I agree with you about historical socialism. Total dumpster fire all around. The difference between historical socialism and a HYPOTHETICAL basic income state, is that there is a level of wealth, no matter how high, where it IS possible to pay for basic income.

Or, to put it in capitalist / market terms, imagine a reducto ad absurdium world where one person owns everything and makes everything with robots, so no one else is useful to him. Instead of killing everyone else, he just pays them to not revolt. That's an insane scenario, of course, but you can think of intermediate scenarios where 90% of the population is useless, and a few corporations own all the relevant capital.

You are not acknowledging human greed, and the power of might makes right.

Why would the guy that owns all the robots not kill everyone that's useless? What's to stop him? The gibbering masses have been trained to accept being worthless and every year, get less and less until they're too weak to dissent or too stupid to coordinate against the robotic work force.

Why would there be income at all? Do you know what income is or why we use it? Why not just hand out food tokens to the gibbering masses? Oops, Farm sector 2 underperformed this year. You get half your rations. Oops, someone in your community did some nonsanctioned action. You get no food rations this week.

Socialism doesn't fucking work because it doesn't leverage the human condition and cannot scale with dissent. That's why it's failed literally every single time it's happened in the past, and why instituting it in the fucking future will fail yet again no matter how you want to explain one thing or another.

It's faggots like you that get entire families ground up by the government watchdogs for not openly supporting the regime. Because you useful fucking idiots will just masturbate all day. Millions have fucking died, over and over, and you still want to pursue a system that has caused millions of people to die while the opposite just lets lazy fucks die.

Low-scale paddle/ball game where the player's paddle can check for the returning ball within its range. If timed poorly the paddle is left see-through and the ball can pass right through it; if timed well though the ball is effectively frozen in 'pre-launch' mode and the player can redirect its angle of movement rather than relying on physics. Handy against screens with bumpers or other moving obstacles. The paddle also has a cache of less-powerful, non-bouncing bullets that weaken obstacles if they hit them and reduce the player's score if they sail off-screen instead. Video related is the game's automated How To Play screen.

What exactly are the limitations of blueprints? What sort of things CANT they do?

Mostly curious if there is core elements a game would need that Blueprints wouldn't allow.

Ideally, your inventory screen wouldn't take up the whole screen, but rather be semi-transparent and take up only a portion of the screen without obscuring vision. And pause the game obviously.

As for your question, not really. It looks like hot garbage if your pixels are different sizes at any given time.

He's memeing. Some guy posted pictures of his blueprint code once and it looked like actual spaghetti (lines going all over the place in a big mess)
However that is not the norm, that is what happens when you don't know what you're doing. It's completely possible to make blueprint code that is clean and easy to read.

Not bad, although the topology is a bit crazy on the stock. Also take a look at what the real deal looks like from the front, like how the top housing slopes downward. When I started out with weapons I often looked at other models on sketchfab to get an idea of the depth of the model I wanted to recreate.

Also another point - low poly can be just as hard as high poly stuff. Just because there are fewer polys doesn't mean there is less to worry about. Actually every polygon has to convey a lot more information than on a high poly model so its just as important that the general shape is conveyed.

To be honest there are loads of designs I want to sprite, but they'd require hundreds of levels to space out all the designs.
I wanted to add another sprite based on this drawing I found on Twitter since I dig the hairstyle, and then I wanted to do a sprite based on Bakugou's mom, one for a girl dressed like a boy, one for a sort of cyborg girl like Marina [Mischief Makers], a brown mom in a yellow jumper, a red-haired schoolgirl, a girl wearing nothing but a short white dress, a girl dressed like a cross between a nun and Kasumi from DOA... it's a big list. I have to limit myself or the game would take years.

Talent doesn't exist. It's a vague simplification that exists to explain complexity in human development.

Anyone who appears "naturally" good at something they haven't practiced, in fact demonstrates that they have already developed many of the skills that are prerequisites to this new skill. Skills like drawing or coding are composites composed of smaller skills.

These people that assume people don't need to practice and begin as gods are dumb though.

Saying talent doesnt exist and everyone learns at the same pace with the same effort, or saying everyone is able to learn everything if they just try hard and long enough is bullshit.

It's like denying retardation and low intelligence doesn't exist, talent is just the opposite of retardation, it's being genetically superior in certain fields. It comes from that mindset telling kids if some they are worse at something, but look, you are really good at that other thing. Some people are just not good at anything.

this is only partially true. look up channel talent vs. fluid talent. some people are neurologically wired to perform better at certain tasks, and learn how to perform those tasks faster.

some people are objectively worse at tasks and will not improve with practice because they did not inheret the genes that allow them to excell at that task. please stop instilling false hope into inferior people, genetics dictate success in life not hard work.

That's neat! If you find a colour that compliments the skybox purple better than gray, all the better. Often it all comes down to combining multiple themes or moods - Donkey Kong Country had a lot of desaturated snow levels but the lack of decipherable foreground and the use of snow particles gave a strong impression of a 'mood' - being caught in a raging blizzard.

Genetics provides advantage or disadvantage for the most basic and instinctive skills, the building blocks. If you want to be good at a complex task, you need to work hard for it, that's a fact. Of course some people are going to learn individual things a little faster, an extremely rare few are going to be able to blaze through learning certain things. Some people have better innate pattern recognition, problem solving, computation speed etc. But no one on the planet has the genetic instructions hard coded in them for being an amazing artist or programmer. Saying you'll never be a good artist because of your genetics is literally no different than a fatass saying they'll never lose weight because of their genetics. It's a bullshit excuse.

no they can't. im so fucking tired of hearing this.

i went to gifted highschool (while not being gifted myself) and have seen whats possible with 3 standard IQ deviations above the norm. the AVERAGE IQ of this highschool was 135.

the absolute worst mistake the teachers made was telling me i was on the same level as these gifted children despite this obviously not being the case.

some people are simply useless wastes of rescources that take up valuable space on this planet like myself. it would have been better for society as a whole if my inferiority was recognised at an early age and i was properly euthanized. but no, instead i have to struggle through life like a fucking salmon swimming upstream while high IQ faggots tell me i can achieve anything that have no idea what its like not being able to solve any problem simply by looking at it for 3 seconds.

i'm shit, people like me are shit, and society needs to cut its losses. we can't afford 5 billion average people anymore.

Many things are not exposed yet, but nothing that relates strictly to gameplay. For example when you host a multiplayer match, there is no way to set your server's name through blueprints. It defaults ot machine name. Another thing is that you can "expose" functions from C++ to blueprints. A lot of free plugins exist that do just that.

So yes, blueprints are equal to code in terms of possibilities, because if something lacks, you can turn a c++ function into a node.
