>In 1982, one of the MiG-25PDS (reg. #7011) was fitted with ECM equipment to provide individual and collective protection from enemy radar- and IR-homing air-to-air and air-to ground missiles. The equipment comprised the Beryoza-LE radar warning receiver (RWR), Geranium ECM system and KDS-155 flare dispenser. The flight testing was completed in 1983. Later, another aircraft was converted for the same purpose. It was designated MiG-25PDSL (reg. #94). It was equipped with the Beryoza-LM RWR, Gardenia-1FU active ECM system mounted in the external pod, as well as chaff and flare dispenser. Its flight testing commenced in 1985.

For plons, either Phantom or MiG-25
For choppers, Apache
For other, a T-72B

I'd pay like maybe double normal module price for any of those if they were done well.

Also I'd pay mucho pesos for some WWII armor. Like, at least one allied and one axis vehicle, a Sherman and a long-barrel panzer IV or some such

Ditto on Phantom. I'd pay $100 for a pack with an early Vietnam variant where it still didn't have a gun, a later contemporary to the -21bis, and the F-4G. Wild Weasel is not optional.

MiG-23 (of any kind, really, but preferably one of the easier models to get ahold of obviously) would be neat as well, I just really like variable geometry wings and it's a shame that Leatherneck is going to find a way to break the only module that'll feature them.

Finally, F-16A. I know the chances of getting any kind of Falcon are low, but it'd be nice to have an early variant for a change of pace from BMS ops.

gee, I wonder if there's a certain couple of generations that I like..

I recognize that design philosophy, the P-47 was quite literally built around the P&W R2800 and the accompanying ducting for the rear mounted turbo-supercharger.

A2A is relatively simple

A2G is a little bit trickier

I suggest starting on A2G because it's a lot more forgiving. Also consider watching supanova's tutorials on BMS, they're on the planefag pastebin.
>>
>>151888893
I've just been out for 6 weeks while most of my squad's been busy with work shit. I've been spending a lot of time dealing with getting my shit together and prepped for grad school, so haven't had much time either.

As of this past weekend my squad's lead is back and we're slowly working on getting the gang back together again, got on and did some weapons-cold 2v2 dogfight trainan against another group wrapping up a couple minutes ago. I flew like hot dog shit due to being sleep deprived and a bit drunk, but would've gotten a kill or two at least it looked like. Fucking Osas on the Basis server kept ruining it for us, though. We were supposed to be calling out when we saw smoke plumes coming from the ground, but it's hard to keep track of that shit during a dogfight obviously.

>>151910364
>>151910512
The P-47 is my favorite WW2 fighter, so I guess it makes a lot of sense that I dig the mig.
>>
>>151913338
Okay, thanks. Getting the plane set up properly eluded me until I watched a tutorial, read the manual, and tried and failed a few times. Just wanted an idea of how deep the rabbit hole goes.
>>
>>151913735
The F-16 is extremely straightforward compared to everything else when it comes to starting the plane up.

Same goes for the weapons and other systems. Being a multirole aircraft, the pilot wouldn't really have time for doing in depth shit like, say, setting up a weapon profile in the A-10C, so the way setting up weapons go is as straightforward as it can be to minimize pilot work when he's actually doing multirole shit, like throwing some bombs and then turning to face a fighter threat.

Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity
To go faster than you ever wanted
Would you capture it or just let it stall?

Yo

His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There's vodka on his spacesuit already, Stolnaya and Cherry

He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready to go mach

But he keeps on forgetting what he wrote down,
The whole Party goes so loud
He opens his throttle, but the thrust won't come out
It's choking how, Nato's joking now!
The clock's run out, time's up over, bloah!

Snap back to reality, Oh there goes gravity
Oh, there goes Tactilly, he choked
He's so fast, but he won't give up that easy, no
He won't have it, he knows his whole Parties back's to these ropes

It don't matter, he's fast
He knows that but he's splashed
He's so stagnant, he knows
When he goes back to his Babushka, that's when it's
Back to the Yak again, yo
This whole rhapsody
He better go capture that mach number and hope it don't pass him

You better lose yourself in the mach, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go (go)
You only get one shot, do not let your engines blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime (yo)

High because energy

Low level memes is exactly that: A meme. Modern radar can see you even if you literally touch the grass because you go fast. You need to slow down to way past crashing speed to avoid detection.

I think lower threat deck is like 10,000 feet, below that is the death zone of manpads and AAA.
>>
>>151924552
Largely depends on the target, munitions carried, other flights in the area, aircraft doing the sortie, threats etc.

For example, a target with a high SAM threat might be better attacked from down low with a popup or loft attack while a target with lots of AAA around could be safely attacked from altitude outside of the range of the guns.

It's slavboo delusion. I'd rather not give harmtard the (you). They never flew over the Soviet Union because they were afraid of SAM's and losing pilots just like the U-2. But here have this little Gem from a pretty interesting guy.
>Soviet pilot Viktor Belenko, who defected to Japan in a MiG-25 on Dec. 6, 1976, confirmed it in its “MiG Pilot” book.

“American reconnaissance planes, SR-71s, were prowling off the coast, staying outside Soviet airspace by photographing terrain hundreds of miles inland with side – angle cameras. They taunted and toyed with the MiG-25s sent up to intercept them, scooting up to altitudes the Soviet planes could not reach, and circling leisurely above them or dashing off at speeds the Russians could not match,” Belenko explained.

However, according to the Mig pilot, Russians tried to intercept and shoot down a Blackbrid, but they always failed this task: “[The Soviets] had a master plan to intercept an SR-71 by positioning a MiG-25 in front of it and one below it, and when the SR-71 passed they would fire missiles. But it never occurred. Soviet computers were very primitive, and there is no way that mission can be accomplished.”

“First of all, the SR-71 flies too high and too fast. The MiG-25 cannot reach it or catch it. Secondly…the missiles are useless above 27,000 meters [88,000 feet], and as you know, the SR-71 cruises much higher. But even if we could reach it, our missiles lack the velocity to overtake the SR-71 if they are fired in a tail chase. And if they are fired head-on, the guidance systems cannot adjust quickly enough to the high closing speed”.
>>
>>151924552
In general, high up because it puts you out range of the really nasty stuff that you won't even see like MANPADS. Sometimes a mission calls for low level cowboy strikes, but as I understand it that's a minority of the actual combat missions that get flown.

If air to air is involved, radar has gotten so good that flying high is almost always preferable. The F-22 for example was designed with thrust vectoring in mind so that it could super cruise at very high altitude and sling AMRAAMs while still being maneuverable in the thin air. That thrust vectoring also makes for high maneuverability at air show speeds for air shoe maneuvers is a nice bonus.
>>
>>151926074
>Modern radar can see you even if you literally touch the grass because you go fast.

Provided that terrain doesn't mask your approach, sure. You also have to consider the curvature of the earth. Radars can't see lower than the horizon due to the planet being in the way. While the horizon might seem very far away to a stationary observer, jets can cover the distance in a fairly quick time, giving the radar operator not an awful lot of time to react.

Still, with good SEAD and EWAR packages in support and precision munitions then why not bomb from 20k ft and stay out of AAA/Manpad range?
>>
>>151918596
So we may get a PFM su-33?

Eh i can live with that.
>>
>>151926550
Which is why they made the 31

Viktor's a pretty cool guy tho, shame he didn't believe in the power of the proletariat :^)
>>
>>151926947
>Provided that terrain doesn't mask your approach, sure.
>Radars can't see lower than the horizon due to the planet being in the way.

Which is why modern AWACS fly very high and can cover half a continent with one plane positioned correctly
>Its pulse-Doppler radar (PD) has a range of more than 250 mi (400 km) for low-flying targets at its operating altitude, and the pulse (BTH) radar has a range of approximately 400 mi (650 km) for aircraft flying at medium to high altitude

That's for the E3, which they stopped producing in 1992. We're now 24 years later.
>>
>>151927402

Yea, flying under air-based radar can be a bit tricky. Had assumed ground-based search and SAM fire-control radars
>>
>>151927504
Low level is dead in modern battlefields. Iglas everywhere and shitty 50 cals on Toyotas that can ruin your day.
>>
>>151927573

Depends who you're fighting. Low level 'show of force' against insurgents is very much alive and well.

I realise that's not dropping armaments on people but still a tactic used
>>
>>151927269
Yeah to intercept low flying cruise missiles, F-111s and B-1Bs. The MiG-31 has a lower top speed and no increase in service ceiling over the MiG-25.
>>
>>151927269
Yea I like the Foxhound. I'm glad it has such a nice model in DCS.
Here is some more interesting stuff.
>On January 31st, 1986, MiG-31 pilot Captain Mikhail Myagkiy achieved lock-on onto an SR-71 from a distance of 120km at an altitude of 52,000 feet. He did not engage the Blackbird though, because it had not violated Soviet airspace.
>June of 1986, six Soviet MiG-31's staged a coordinated "all angles" intercept of an SR-71 over the Barent's Sea, also locking onto it (but not firing on it for the same reason - it had not violated Soviet airspace). That particular intercept resulted in the USA cancelling Blackbird recon flights near/over the Soviet Union, because it showed that the Soviets had the capability to successfully target the spyplane, and it was believed their R-33 Amos long-range missile fired from the Foxhound could bring it down if fired in anger at it.

Imagine being on a ship that gets bombed or missiled or whatever FUCK

That's one of the most terrifying things I can think of. Not knowing if you're going to drown, burn or die of blast/shrapnel. Or being locked below deck by some sort of damage to doors.

Well during the Falklands War most of the deaths of the sinking of the ARA General Belgrano were pretty much instant or rather quick due to the second torpedo explosion ripping up through the decks. Some of which were rec areas that were filled with sailors relaxing while the ship sailed back to port.

323 people died but that's only 28% of the ships total crew.
Then you have to take into account that it's a WW2 light cruiser with a bunch of modern upgrades thrown on top.

Modern warships tend to have less crew and have much better materials, I don't think it's nearly as scary or as dangerous. In fact, on some ships, like an aircraft carrier, you are probably in the safest place in the world as you'd be surrounded by your supporting fleet.

I'd love to join the Navy, I work in an office that is in an old dockyard and I also live near by, I fucking love the maritime scene.

I put down Belenko's """biography""" halfway through. The part where he realizes he knew/felt all along something was wrong with the soviet system after reading a bunch of Solzhenitsyn books the yankees brought him into this cell was VERY cringy and unrealistic IMO.

Pure yankee propaganda and I thought I'd read a good aviation book about an interesting episode of history.

For the tankfag pastebin maybe include a complete list of the fully modeled tanks (3D interiors)?

Finding which tanks are playable was already pretty confusing, but the new 4.0 release notes muddle things even further. So I know they added the BMP-2, but is the playable T-55 or Isreali Centurion fully modeled now?

t b h the playable vehicle selection in SBPro is kind of limited

You have basically every major Abrams variant (including the IP model and the upgraded USMC model) up to the A2 SEP1 model, you have the Leopard 1A5 (Danish service model), you have the Leopard 2 up to the A5/2E. You also have the M60A3, which is actually a really fucking good tank for its age.

and then you have some versions of the T-72, none of which have the ATGM gun-launcher, and all of which are quite easily destroyed by any modern Western MBT from the front. You also have the T-62 (and maybe the T-55, don't remember if it's fully 3d or not) which are basically meme tanks because of their age.

The ruskies even kind of get fucked on the IFV side of things. the BMP is low and has ATGM launch capability, but no laser rangefinder and it's pretty easy to kill.
>>
>>151985890
It's not a game made for Slavaboos.
>>
>>151985890
Western armies and whatnot use SBPro for training, which explains the western vehicle selection being broader than the eastern.
>>
>>151986021

It's not, but against M1s or Leopards in any numbers, the models of T-72 we have in the game require at least a 3:1 numbers advantage to have a chance at succeeding.

A playable T-80 or T-90 might assuage this a bit given that they're more modern tanks with actual thermal imaging systems and more modern FCS- they'd still be pretty fucking easy to kill given that they're just hopped up T-72s. Might reduce the required numbers advantage from 3:1 down to 2:1 or so.
>>
>>151986350
As I said, it's not a game made for slavaboos. Stop complaining about the lack of playable Russian shit.

Missiles of the era were EXTREMELY unreliable, as in one in four would fall right off the rail without igniting and their tracking was sketchy at best, and that's all the F-4 was armed with for A2A. When they finally supplemented it with a a gun-pod, before they had one built into the airframe, it was always fairly inaccurate, and went further off-bore the more G's the plane pulled, so the method was to use it's rate of fire to put a wall of rounds roughly in front of the target.

All of those kinks and angles in the airframe? Those are all bandaids for poor aerodynamics. It had monstrous power, mostly as a symptom of having to carry it's own weight, and while it maneuvered barely enough to defend itself the only thing it really had going for it was it's speed, dive and zoom capability. It also guzzled fuel like a mother fucker, but hey it was the 60's. As said by it's own pilots the F-4 is a very big, very powerful bus.

It's cockpit is both large and somehow tight, the dash and HUD feel like they're brushing the bridge of your nose.

Still want one, and my dick can't even handle the thought of a 5-BRRRRRT Phantom.

Keep in mind that the F-4 was designed to fly far & fast to shoot down Soviet bombers, it was never meant to dogfight because the thinking at the time was that missile technology made such combat obsolete. It's pilots weren't even trained on fighter maneuvering & tactics, which was why they had such terrible losses over Vietnam in the beginning. Those experiences are literally the reason why Top Gun was created and why every American fighter since then has had a gun.

It was big and heavy, but it could also egress practically at will and nothing even had a chance of outrunning it until the Mig-25 ten years later.

After maturing both the plane and the tactics it became an excellent multi-role fighter, it's still the only aircraft ever used simultaneously as the mainstay of all 3 of the USA's armed forces branches. A ton of NATO countries used it like they do with the F-16 and F/A-18 today.

Also fun fact, the land speed record set (and still held) today buy the Thrust SSC was powered by a Phantom's J79 engines.

Did the US have any dedicated air superiority fighters at that time?

It's my understanding that planes like the F-105, which were designed to be fast penetration bombers, got co-opted to other roles. Was it the same for the F-4, where it got pressed into service fighting migs for air superiority when it was never meant to do so? Or did designers believe that such a missile platform was the way to secure air superiority ?

The F4 has such an odd shape, with angles which I've never seen duplicated. I'd be interested to know how this band-aids the aerodynamics.

It was designed as an air to air fighter, but the military did indeed have such confidence in missiles that they didn't even consider dogfighting would ever happen, so it was a massive shock when they discovered that missiles were not only unreliable but could be defeated, and their pilots had no idea what to do when their missiles failed. There's still a running joke today that goes they're called miss-iles, not hit-iles. Aero-fixes like those are deigned to counteract specific flight problems mostly with high AoA; For example the reason why the wings are canted near the ends is because wind tunnel testing showed that there was high roll instability in flight, solving which required that the wings have a 5 degree dihedral instead of being flat. But to save having to redesign the entire center section, they just bent the outward quarters enough to average 5 degrees across the span's length. The notches in the wings counteracted pitch-up during high AoA. It has a long keel because the tail had to be kept short to fight Carrier requirements, and as such it had poor directional stability due to the smaller tail, hence why it's tailplanes are angled to that triangle in the rear.

The AoA issues coming from fouled air moving over the tail surfaces are a lot of the reason why fighters have a high mounted wing, and it's especially important on carrier aircraft due to the high AoA landings & takeoffs.

/simg/ confessions time.

The F-15 used to be one of my favorite planes until I moved to rural Virginia (more on the appalachian end).

Now I have to deal with the cocksuckers screaming through the air with their hair on fire at ~1500 feet above my house for a few hours, every couple days. You'll just hear one go by and then every dog for a 5-mile radius goes apeshit for the next 20 minutes.
>>

>You'll just hear one go by and then every dog for a 5-mile radius goes apeshit for the next 20 minutes.
Awesome. Probably one of the few places where noise complaining people that decided to build a house near an active airfield/racetrack/dragstrip are promptly told to go fuck themselves.

When I lived in Florida I was right across the lake from Fantasy of Flight and almost every day, a couple of planes would brumble about. Aside from warm beaches it is quite literally the only thing I miss in CA.

>85-100 zoom out

works great
>>
>>152028526
This. Would recommend not setting it to a linear slide as it gets caught between two points and your view spazzes out
>>
Honestly, what's the point of jammers in DCS? They cease to work by the time you get into the range to shoot anyway, so unless you have like 50 planes just spamming the enemy radar screen so full of shit that they can't position the cursor precisely enough to get a lock onto the desired target, I really don't see what purpose they serve.
>>
>>151999493
iirc the US Navy managed to mitigate some of the problems with their missiles with better training (ie TOPGUN) and never really needed a gunpod to improve their kill ratio

This is factual. US fighters cannot achieve air superiority against Russian pilots. ESPECIALLY over Russian airspace. Somehow deluded reddit F-15aboos believe that real life is like a video game and their aim-120s could actually hit a Mig25 or Su27 (false). People like to throw around fake numbers put out by the IDF but most of those "air to air" kills against planes on the ground, taking off or flown by pilots on their first time flying ever. When flown by Russians the mig25 is undefeated against the f15 but American propaganda just counts those loses as accidents or surface to air kills. America lost air superiority during Vietnam and never got it back.

What is more likely? That russian pilot is too drunk to fly or that American pilot is murder by race riots on way to airfield? You know what is real answer. Also Russian pilot is fly better drunk after years of training. New Mig 31 have sipper tube to vodka coolant for pilot built in.

Just did Op Kaman 99, an Iran-Iraq war scenario in CMANO, autistic planning pays off wew

Did marshalling and time to start's to make every strike synchronized. Every plane was terrain hugging and EMCON restricted, took out all the radars and runways of two airbases within the same minute

40 out of 47 targets destroyed only 6 planes lost, the exact same loss by airplane type in the real op https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Kaman_99

Question /simg/:

How realistic is IL-2: 1946's flight characteristics? Would the shit I pull of in this game work out if I do it on a real aircraft?
>>
>>152107693
They haven't implemented path plotting pre-takeoff yet, you have to do it as they take off for each group. Just FYI at each breakpoint you can hit F2 to tell a unit/group to change altitude or speed and F9 to turn on sensors. e.g. you can fence in at 300ft at cruising speed then pull up to 1000ft and hit the afterburners and turn the jammers on for a bombing run. Also remember to set terrain following so the altitude you set corresponds to altitude above ground not above sea, if you want to avoid flak and stuff.

For the timing you calculate distances between airbases. If theres 150 nautical miles between two airbases with aircraft going for the same target, you take cruising speed of the aircraft (e.g. 480knots) and say that would take about 18 minutes to travel that distance. So you delay the start time of the aircraft in base closer to the target using Zulu time, not local time.

Also if you want a bunch of aircraft on different missions to form up at a certain point just make a support mission with a single reference point and assign them to that, when they meet up you can re-assign them to their respective missions.

By this you mean each waypoint created using F3 right? Do those settings apply to the leg of the route before the waypoint or after it?

Yeah the settings apply after the waypoint. In the help tab at the top it shows you all the hotkeys and links to baloogan's tutorials.

Tips to remember:

- To make a patrol mission with a prosecution area for say for AAW/CAP, Ctrl+right click then click define area then click and drag a box to make 4 reference points in the area you want the fighters to loiter, in the mission editor where it says 'patrol area' you add points currently highlighted (ctrl+end to unselect all reference points before selecting the ref points of the control box) then define area for a wider area where you want to engage any enemy fighters that move into it then assign those to prosecution area. Make sure the mission is set to engage fighters outside the patrol area for this to work.

- You contrail above 26000 feet and are more easily detected visually. You are detected more easily the higher your speed so for example if you're flying a stealth aircraft through enemy territory it helps to go at loiter speed to reduce the range EO sensors and binoculars spot you at.

- If you want to strike an airbase or naval base but you don't know which parts are housing aircraft/subs/ships you can save bombs by: Getting an ELINT aircraft to check for SAM types and search radar ranges. Make a support mission with a recon aircraft, set transit altitude to high altitude and station altitude to low altitude and draw a path with reference points that starts outside the white radar rings so you duck below the horizon

- You can map cursor visibility in options to 'show on cursor' and you'll get a black box next to your cursor showing terrain elevation (and a bunch of other stuff) which can be very helpful for plotting paths to avoid radar detection

- You have to be really autistic when planning strikes and check the launch altitude restrictions of each weapon and check for clouds that can prevent laser guided bombs from being used at certain altitudes.

Yeah the micromanagement shouldn't be necessary and they've said they would make it much simpler in the future. If you check warfaresims.com every few weeks they bring in a bunch of new features. They're talking about an advanced strike planner which will probably sort a lot annoying stuff out.

Also one of the main things to look at when planning strikes is check if it is hardened or underground which means you need a higher yield bomb or a penetrator. Also check Damage Points(DP) - click on weapons to see DP and then click on a target to see its DP to see if your weapons will have enough DP to destroy it. This is so you don't try to destroy a dam with a maverick.

Oh yeah. Saw how the automated thing tends to waste a lot of payload on targets that doesnt require it too.
Another question. What do I need to make a successful SEAD patrol? I assigned some Phantoms with rockets to a SEAD patrol to take down the enemy defenses but they'd just loiter around without doing anything.
>>
>>152082538
And why does that mean the CIA wouldn't have gotten rid of the aircraft? If anything they'd maybe have kept the aircraft until the 80's when there were enough spy satellites capable enough to mostly replace the SR-71. Based on what you've just posted they'd have put even more emphasis on this than the Air Force. And the Air Force got rid of them in 1990, reinstated them for four years and then got rid of them in 1999. In that four year period where they were reinstated they were not used operationally. Probably because the U-2S and KH-11s could do the job just as well for cheaper.
>>
>>152120841

I need to have a think about where I'm going to put the screen 2bh. My main monitor sits on a small shelf but that's only 4-5 inches above the desk.

I'm thinking some kind of tilting bracket might do the job so I can lay the screen flat and put it under the shelf when it's not in use but I think the angle of the screen would be pretty shallow when it was up. Will have to do some measurements when I get home tonight.

Do you just have yours sat underneath your main monitor(s)?

Alternative is to buy 2 x 8inch screens and mount them on little brackets

>For the first six years of the war, the Soviet press barely mentioned the war. When they did, it was in terms of happy Soviet soldiers building hospitals and orphanages. The Soviet combat role was not mentioned, nor was the fact that the Soviets filled more hospitals and orphanages then they constructed. When General Secretary Gorbachev's glasnost policy was implemented in the Soviet Union, the true casualty picture slowly began to emerge. Of the 620,000 Soviets who served in Afghanistan, 14,453 were killed or died from wounds, accidents or disease. This is a modest 2.33% of the total who served. The rate of hospitalization during Afghanistan service, however, was remarkable. The 469,685 personnel hospitalized were an astounding 75.76% of those who served. Of these, 53,753 (or 11.44%) were wounded or injured. Fully 415,932 (or 88.56%) were hospitalized for serious diseases. In other words, of those who served in Afghanistan, 67.09% required hospitalization for a serious illness. These illnesses included 115,308 cases of infectious hepatitis and 31,080 cases of typhoid fever.(4) The remaining 233,554 cases were split between plague, malaria, cholera, diphtheria, meningitis, heart disease, shigellosis (infectious dysentery), amoebic dysentery, rheumatism, heat stroke, pneumonia, typhus, and paratyphus.(5)

Stealth isn't an on/off state, it's a function of a huge number of parameters and is never designed to make you invisible. It's a tactical aid to reduce the range at which you are detected by the enemy. Unless radar is completely replaced by some other detection system there will always be value in low RCS stealth designs reducing the distance at which a plane can be detected and engaged.

Sprey is an imbecile who seems to think Stealth is that 'the radar can detect you, or it can't'. He also thinks IFF is useless, the MiG-21 is more maneuverable than 4.5 & 5th generation fighters, and that the F-20A was ruined by putting A2G capability & a search radar on it.

If he had his way, the USAF inventory would consist of thousands of up-engined F-5As and the A-10A (AGM-65 capability removed).
>>

What you're saying sounds right, it just seems odd since this man seems to be a pretty celebrated figure inside of American aviation.

>What are the major compromises which planes like the F-15/F-16 and F-35 make to be "multi-role" and have A2G capabilities?
They are heavier, is the main one. But since it's not 1950 and electronics are very lightweight, this is not a big deal. In-fact many previously A2A airframes have been retrofitted to have A2G capability.

>>152173091
>are there any good videos on the F-35 which are not completely biased
No, they're mostly either F-35 hateboner circlejerk or JSF paid shill media.

You have to look at all the coverage and come to your own conclusions based on your knowledge of aerospace and defence. I'll give you a hint though, if this development process was all much more secret like in the 70s and we only saw the F-35 when it was a finished product then we wouldn't be having this huge fracas over questioning the success of the program

They haven't really figured out how to do tonnes of stuff. Guided weapons & custom HUDs are a mystery to most modders. Only the top sekrit private mods have figured then out.

And since the DCS modding community is the most spiteful, jealous bunch of assholes you'd ever hope to meet they have never released any guided or documentation on how to replicate their modding work.

He was an analyst and did number-crunching for the A-10 project. Definitely not a 'co-designer' in the way that most people would think of the role but that doesn't stop clickbait shit from exploiting it in that way
>>
>>152178234
Articles that claim he "designed" the F-16 give him too much credit. He was on the committee that wrote the requirements for the Lightweight Fighter program, the program that spawned the F-16. The F-16 has since become one of the most successful multirole fighters in history.

The ultimate irony of that though is that all Sprey wanted was a lightweight fighter with guns, great maneuverability, and a couple Sidewinders. He actively fought against the inclusion of a radar or radar guided missiles because he thought that would just weigh the plane down and prevent it from doing its job. That alone should tell you how outdated his thinking was.

Sprey would hate what the F-16 has become. If he had his way, the F-16 would've been nothing more than a hotrod F-5E like the one we have in DCS, and the F-16 would've been retired after a decade at best because it would just be hopelessly outdated, too niche, and lacking in capability.

Interesting, interesting.

Was this dude involved in the F-5, because from everything you're telling me it sounds like it would be right up his ally. As far as I understand the F-5 successor was passed over for the F-16 for exactly the same reasons Sprey doesn't like in planes. The F-5 is fun to fly but it would be blown the fuck out the sky by a F-16 I'm sure.

Read up on the Fighter Mafia. Sprey was a key member of it. They were pushing for a good old fashioned fighter after the real world (read: Vietnam) results of USAF fighter design of the 50s and 60s focusing on high speed super advanced interceptors and tactical nuclear bombers. They were a reaction to the problems faced by the Phantom and its reliance on fancy gizmos like missiles.

Any CMANO players here or just sub guys?

I'm doing a mission where I have to track a sub off the kola peninsula, 1983 in a USS baltimore without being detected and I just get detected every time with mission failure. It's crawling with destroyers and ASW aircraft dropping sonobuoys everywhere.

Can you remain undetected from passive sonobuoys by being at the right depth and speed? I was 20knots (no cavitation) and as deep as possible when a passive sonobuoys got me.
>>
>>152195617

I assume CMANO has thermoclines modeled, so if you stay below the boundary between temperatures and stay slow you should be able to remain undetected. Only problem is you won't be able to use your own listening gear for much unless the sub you're tracking is underneath the layer as well.
>>
>>152195617
>>152196592

That being said, sonobuoys can be dropped beneath the thermal layer, but there SHOULD be a degree of time between the buoy being (very loudly) deployed, and the buoy actually going live. That should give you some time to reposition and such.

I dunno, when you're closing near them, you should try to remain underneath the thermal layer if they're above it, and above the thermal layer if they're below it. The change in water density will render their sonar useless (active may still work? I dunno), but it'll do the same to you which is obviously no bueno when tracking an enemy.

I dunno, my expertise is with fleet boats and unterseeboots, not modern SSNs.

Is there anything to do in FSX other than free flying and the provided missions?

Recently I've been considering the possibility of getting back into playing it again, is there any way to add some sort of goal to the game? Say, like flying shit for an airline or cargo company, in an addon?

Sure you can just go Jester Logbook and do like the autist but I'd really appreciate if there was some other way.

I'm one of the biggest Foxbat fans there is, but everything in this image is false.

You could have made an actual one with real facts and sources, and it would have been awesome.

FACT

The MiG 25 was poorly designed rubbish strapped to cheap engines that didn;t work and the aircraft was a complete waste of space that never did anything of note. However, this doesn't stop the that the faggots in this general have shitposting it and every other dodgy third world MiG design to death to the point where it's not even worth posting here unless you're one of the three shitposters in the MiG circlejerk.

Meant only full fidelity RUSSIAN plane, sorry.

It just makes no sense to me.
What will the I-16 do. Literally what will it do in this game.

What will it fly against? What kind of single player content can you make with it?

I understand MiG-21 because it was probably the most accessible Russian fighter jet to make, and its a good starting point.

But when every single WWII plane is unclassified, accessible, and well documented, why would you choose an I-16 over almost any other Soviet WWII plane?

Yak1,3,9?
MiG-3?
La-5,7?
>>
>>152220182
It's good that they chose the I-16 because then they will have to balance it with an earlier variant of the 109 which will set a precedent of not just releasing the final revision of each aircraft and rather stuff that's relevant to historic battles

they should choose variants based on which saw the most service not whether it has the most thingamajigs in it
>>
>>152220670
>because then they will have to balance it with an earlier variant of the 109

This is the most fucking naive thing I have ever read in this general.
>>
>>152220670

I don't know if I agree.

They already have a good number of WWII planes in the sim.

Why would they choose one that literally can not fit in with the others?

Besides, relevant to historic battles doesn't make sense because soon every WWII fag is going to be flying over Normandy. Why would an I-16 be there?
>>
>>152220967
Why would a BF-109K be over Normandy when it wasn't even delivered yet?

When they start bringing in more theaters and autistic people start complaining they're going to have to think about why they keep modelling variants that saw basically no service just because they're more advanced
>>
>>152221389
Oh my god, it's like this is the first time you've visited this general or heard about DCS at all.

Don't hold your breath.
>>
>>152221617
So you're telling me they're just going to have the completely OP 109 variant against that shitty soviet plane from the early thirties? Even though people will never stop complaining about it?
>>
Image limit reached, so I made a new shitty general.
