If the artist takes more time than me as the script writer I will be surprised. Even if I write at a quick pace I'm looking at 200 days minimum for a full first draft, and that's if we scale back the overall size. More likely gonna be 10 months or so of script writing, and another 6 of editing.

I also, as the script writer, am unsure if /agdg/ would at all be interested in my updates, as they would come in the form of massive text files of dialogue trees.

I do know one thing that /agdg/ is interested in. I am delivering the character profiles for the five heroines to my artist tonight (there are done, just have to send them after work). I am guessing /agdg/ would be interested in waifus at the very least.

Game Maker user here. Having issues with upscaling the resolution of my game:

The code itself works fine, but when the window size changes it creates a blank copy of the window that doesn't actually exist on the desktop (since you can drag another window over that blank one and the space under the dragged window disappears). I'm not sure why it's doing that now, unless it's due to an update in GM:S, and I'm not sure how to stop it happening every time the player changes the game's window size.

I know, i know, i have a dozen models like this some slightly different with different technics and starting points.

Gameplay is already hammered out in my head, and i'd prefer to go in Unity or Unreal working out coding while having a mostly functional model to use.

but they're not MY rigs or animations, i go in staring at a billion different control points and options having to figure shit out through trial and error, and even then at some point i'll have to use my own models anyways.

I still haven't fully wrapped my head around gear changing in terms of technique when it comes the model/rig. Not to mention the lack of tutorials on this matter.

Would i just segment this model into the pieces i want and export them separately? Using blender can i just put them on different layers and they'll xfer over?

How many different items do you plan on having in inventory? If not many, you could go for a selection wheel + slowdown of the game while the inventory is open, instead of full pause. Like I said, I'm using a fixed delta time variable for all the movement. I'm also calling sleep(), with the variable delta time value as the argument. I don't know how game maker works, but draw the orb at the player's X coordinate, but alter the Y coordinate. You can use a sin wave to alter its position if you want a floating effect. Then get the angle of depression from a point in front of the player related to the center of the orb and then spawn the bullet there facing that direction.

Humans are the hardest things to model. Our brains are very adept at detecting incongruences and things that are "off", so some good attempts at humans end up landing in uncanny valley.

Animu girls might be easier to model, because they're not real, and also they're stupid and gay.

In any case, modelling is a logical challenge, you're solving 3 dimensional puzzles in real time, and trying to be creative while doing that very difficult, or requires a high level of mastery of the tools.

So its very easy to take the path of least resistance when modelling, and just subdivide and extrude your way into a shitty looking model. The geometry of the mesh ends up dictating the shape, rather than you dictating the geometry of the mesh to achieve the shape you want. This is because you can't really solve logical problems wrestling with 3d geometry while also being free to be creative. This is why you have to draw a reference and model to that reference, not just fire up Blender and start extrruding faces.

Also I recommend doing some tutorials if you don't know what you're doing at all.

This game still has my heart, and looks very Capcom-Disney in a good way. I hope you don't mind me giving some feedback on the game design, but here I go nevertheless:

Nice window-shutting transition, by the way. Do you think you could put a timer on the score tally before it starts, so there's enough time to process each piece of the score individually? (Skippable at the press of a button, of course, but it's a bit counter-intuitive to have the score separated into pieces if there isn't enough reaction time to read them)

Is the HUD a WIP? I noticed you got rid of the score/villager count, and I thought that was very useful while I was playing before.

Thanks for adding (what I think is?) a health system, too. Are you sure you want to give the player more score for time than grabbing more villagers? I've been playing the latest demo on your itch.io for a while (I got to Level 6, Hi-score 6308) and I realized that it might be more fun to grab as many villagers as you can before the timer runs out. In fact, I wonder if you could make the timer score worth more the closer the timer is to 0 instead of the opposite, because then there's a tradeoff for finishing too early versus trying to rack up points and risk running out of time, and I think that could make the game even more interesting.

(I'm also curious about the lives counter in the score: Somehow I feel like multiplying each life by x1000 is too much, especially given that it racks up for each level you beat... Do you think you could make it significantly smaller, like x50? It would be very subtle, but would become more apparent as the levels go on.

... Of course, this is assuming the game is heavily score-focused, at least, that is the impression I got while I played/looking at the .gif you posted last time (with the score tally)

I love the secret "Thanks For Playing" screen, but I also noticed that waiting on the title screen cuts off all of the audio until I completely reboot the game. (That is, closing the window, cleaning the cart pins with some rubbing alcohol, and re-launching it)

Is there some "snap to armature" magic that can happen in unity somewhere?

These and things along those lines are the things i need to find out. Saddly, I've yet to find a video that explains this part in detail or I simply don't know what it is i'm looking for.

modular character models could be tough or quite easy depending on the variation you're planning to have. If the arms all lead into the same sized shoulder then you could just split up the mesh, and find some way to deal with the smoothing issues. If you've got giant muscley arms that have much bigger shoulders then it'll be hard to make that work, but you could do a lot with distorting to be different sizes and shapes...

I dunno, its a very involved subject.

I could just be lazy and aim for Megaman Legends style game giving me the option to just swap the arms with ease.

Another way lazy way is to just make a generic body model. make parts of armor and connect it using empties and texture swap (probably one of the only tutorials i've seen come close to subject did it that way).

Hi, sorry I didn't answer you before, probably missed your post and the archive hasn't been working for me.

You are right about the level clear screen, I'll put the timer on the score tally. The count is already skippable, so don't worry about that.
The HUD is more close to what I have in mind as final version, with more graphic elements than text, compared to the previous HUD I had. Score doesn't show at the HUD anymore because having the score at the end of the level plus the score on the level all the time seemed too much to me.
The drops on the HUD are the villager count. Amongst the received feedback, some people wanted to see the amount of Villagers needed to clear the level all the time, so I decided to go with that (old gif, but shows how it works when you catch one). If people finds it confusing after Demo Day I'll go back to one drop and numbers.

I doubt I'll add a health system, but I might add an enemy that stuns you without insta-killing you in the future.
I'll check and rebalance the scoring too, you have a great point about giving more priority to villagers than the timer and the amount of lives. That's the kind of stuff I have been doing in a hurry and without thinking too much, so the more feedback I get on them the better.
I'm guessing that sound bug is related to the demo mode not having sound. Since the demo that's on itch I changed all the way sound is managed so I'll have to check if that bug still exists or not. I usually test the game without any sound I'm probably missing a few things here and there regarding that. Another anon pointed out the level music didn't loop correctly sometimes too

Right screen has better value contrast (easier to tell the level apart from the background, and the various floors of the level are mostly easy to tell apart) but the colours are too desaturated - they seem rather washed out. You'll find a good balance of saturation and tone as you go along though. Just take a screenshot of your level layout every now and then, filter that screenshot to Greyscale and see if the values are still clear and convey what you want the player to see.

You can take your art assets and crank the saturation up to 100, but it won't make you a master of colour like mid-to-late 90's Capcom. You need to make sure your tones and values don't bleed into each other.

what input would make sense to swallow. Normally down would swallow but since this is top down that wouldnt make sense. I'm thinking either space or left click. Then once the power is absorbed right click is attack and left click jettisons the power up. Does that seem to make sense?

Day 27 of trying to make video games

Finally finished the rough and am now working on the final animation for the aerial silk drop, but it's taken me forever just to do the first frame because I had some difficulty drawing the head at this angle and making it seem the right size and shape. I did. Gravity is the only real constant around (there's the bounce speed too I guess). And multiplying vvelocity by 60 in
vposition = vposition + vvelocity*dt
fixed the problems I had. I could also multiply gravity again by 60, and same for the bounce so it becomes -360.

But in the end I feel like I'll end up sticking to vsync. This is just experimentation anyway.

The RPG genre is really shit, like a bad joke that just keeps going, it only started because at the beginning pretty much everyone who made games also had played D&D and with how limited computers were it was the only way to present a complex reality and narrative, the problem is that we are decades past the time when you literally had to choose between text or graphics, but still those outdated "game" mechanics persist plaguing the industry and infiltrating other genres.

you could not be more wrong. Rpg players do not seek better graphics. We can play even on paper. Computer RPGs are not real RPGs. Because your range of interpretation is limited to few choices. Still some games can give you such range of choices that the depth of the narrative makes you love the game. I cant remember how many times i played baldurs gate and fallout 2. The tabletop experience was surpassed already by a relative old game called SS13. its a multiplayer roleplaying game (this one is a real rpg). And to back my argument im going to show you how great graphics only makes the RPG worst. Take for instance the time it take to code a game. add to it the time you have to do the 3d models and animate them. this is a waste of time. now make shittier art assets and improve the story and the plot, and you can deliver great games like skyrim for exemple, that delivered shitty 3d models on the first release of the game and a solid plot and gameplay. the FPS players complained about the lack of polys and post processing effects low quality textures. as funny as these guys are to control i think i'm going let players choose between this biped movement and a more traditional omniball "robot on a stick" style movement until i get the biped movement exactly how i want it. i don't want to force anyone to use something that's not perfect. if i make a version thats only slightly but still objectively better what can i do to incentivise players to use either one apart from just entertainment value?

I hardly doubt that. Playing a video game is still not as main stream as watching a Hollywood blockbuster. Other than that, you can only sell a game once, while with a movie, you get money from the theaters, then from the DvD/BR releases. To even this, you need shit ton of merchandise, or micro transactions, season passes, monthly subscriptions etc. It's good money, nevertheless, but I don't think it's as much money.

They are as real tiles as any other. I don't see why slopes would matter to Tiled, all it needs to do is save the level. It's up to the game to handle whether they're slopes or something else.

A lot of people are skipping out the polygon modelling stage and jumping straight to Zbrush.

3DS/Maya is mostly used to create base meshes, and then post-sculpt.

There are smoothing modifiers in polymodelling, and more poly + smoother placement. Ultimately, if you make a jaggy lowpoly base mesh, you can just subdivide it in Zbrush to smooth it out if need be.

You always retopologise post-sculpting anyway so... (unless you only work with lowply and skip zbrush altogether)

Classes are up and running now. I could theoretically add a character creator now, but that'll probably be saved for when I'm near the end. Also I would need to generate templates for each class like starting equipment, starting skills, etc.

Anyway, classes don't really do anything except manage what skills you can learn and how much you can master each skill. For now I just grabbed the 6 classes from M&M6, plus I added Adventurer as a hidden debug class that can unlock Master for every skill. Maybe in the real game, once you beat the game you could do a bonus quest to switch everyone's class to Adventurer. I didn't set it up, but class upgrades would be trivial (just add the upgraded class to the spreadsheet and change 1 variable and it all works) - would have to link it up to a quest reward somehow though.
