To expand on this, just in case the implications aren't obvious -
Only CCP are able to claim what was and what was not a goal, meaning that only CCP are capable of determining if the concept was a success or a failure. Since there are no third-party checks (say, credible leaks of pre-implementation discussions), CCP is entirely capable of endorsing whichever version of events puts them in a more favorable light - so even if they did say something, there would be no reason to believe them one way or another.
To sum up, it is impossible to know without a shadow of a doubt if dailies "failed" or "succeeded", so there is hardly a need to discuss it further.

I'm guessing the game has fairly radically changed since I last played in 2012. If possible, could you please give me a brief rundown on major features that have changed, or point me to where I can see key features from major expansions since then?
The last major update I remember was switching to DX10 with I think it was called the "Trinity" update. The game got a fresh coat of paint and it looked great at the time. I played past that time but I don't remember what came after that.

This is what I appeared in when I logged in. It had me in 1.0 space with the tutorial opportunities telling me how to target enemies and what-not. My guns couldn't hit the little fuckers so I just wasted my cruise missiles on little tiny rats to complete the tutorial stuff.

heads up that the opportunities have been updated several times since they first came out (when they were terrible).
Now the opportunities are linear (not haphazard) and steer you through things in increasing complexity. They give you isk on completion, and each one is multistep (fly to the roid, target the roid, activate your laser, fill your cargo, fly back to station, unload your ore to item hangar, put ore on market). This is compared to the tutorial agents, which tell you things to do but not how to do them. On top of all this, the opportunities now point you to the tutorial agents when you get to the end of them - they aren't hidden under the F12 menu any longer.
I no longer recommend that newbies skip the opportunities.

Well first of all before you go learning about fitting is to get your engineering skills to max. This really helps with actually fitting modules.
Once you've got them queued to level 5 each then you gotta learn how to fit certain ships. The ship tree shows what each factions ships exploit e.g. armour and drones for gallente or shield and missles for caldari etc...

A). The ranged meta is always more efficient for target selection than brawling because you can get away if you are fast enough / maneuver properly. Brawling gets shit on by blobbing.
B). The simplest method of learning how to maneuver the ship properly is to not ever use the click commands (approach, orbit). The piloting AI is inefficient and even plausibly bugged (to stop the ship before switching directions), so double clicking directions is basically always the best idea. Agile brawling ships with dual webs and such can click orbit, but they still benefit from manual piloting to get into position.
C). Pick a niche, even a single ship fit, and train for that. Spreading SP through 4 frigate factions, cruisers, and whatever else takes literal years to make all of them decent. Furthermore, if ranged is going to be the main playstyle, that's probably only going to be a ship or two per class -- Slicer or Tristan in frigates, Stabber and Omen and maybe the Caracal in cruisers, then T2s/T3s (interceptors for fleets, etc.). It's possible to do ranged with less speed and agility, where the ship just sorta gets within firing range and backtracks while getting chased I guess, but the point is that SP is very specialized even per ship.
D). Making ISK is basically either PLEXing or sitting in FW complexes. There are a bunch of passive ISK-making ideas that can be done, like Planetary Interaction and market trading, or even getting a character into a niche and selling its extra SP. It's not immediately obvious how productive these can be per how little game knowledge players might have; and even market trading takes lots of capital for a decent return (not to mention how boring a lot of it is). Even more advanced newbie ISK, like 50M/hr, is some $1.50/hr vs. just PLEXing for 1.2B (literally hundreds of ships).

Remote and quiet for what? Null is all blob shit. There are whole chains of systems that have absolutely no activity, especially with Fozzy Sov. I find fewer players in null than in FW space somehow, with null supposedly having more PvP.

Define "crowded".
Having a few people per system is hardly crowded as compared to high sec which much more closely fits the bill (or it would but missions mean that they can support nearly infinite population per mission giving system).
The only really crowded lowsec/nullsec systems are the pipes or HQ systems. Everywhere else by this point is a ghost town. Even jspace probably has a higher occupancy rate per system than low/null.

Put a cloak and a microwarpdrive on a frigate, then fit as many nanos and speed rigs as you can. Break your gate cloak by clicking in a random direction that isn't towards the gate, immediately cloak and then hit your mwd. This should get you clear enough to slowboat out of the bubble.

Get a corp mate to make a load of tactical bookmarks off the gates for you, you can just warp to the bookmarks and then slowboat to the gate while cloaked. This will take a long time.

When you suspect a gate is bubbled or when there is neutrals in the system, warp to a different object near the gate, some gates have asteroid belts, planets, moons etc on the same cluster.
Once you are close enough to d-scan check if there is anchored bubbles.
If there is a large one you will get stored by it but from a different angle from where they are expecting you if they are shit and you might be able to burn to gate.
If no anchored bubble but you see a HIC or dictor, assume they bubbled it the moment you became visible on d-scan out entered system and they will most likey chase you through if you make it to the gate.
Keep in mind that if you waited from a different angle and they never saw you because of cloak, you can easily slow boat to gate because most campers are shit at the game and won't have cans placed towards every possible object in the system.
If no HICs or doctors and no anchored bubbles, go ahead and warp to gate.
If the gate had no close signatures, you will have to cap drain yourself.
Initiate warp to a random place and stop it immediately, keep doing it until you have no cap.
Once you have very little cap warp to far gate and you will most likey stop mid warp at a d-scannable range.
Make sure to stop the automatic re-warp.
Alternative is to have tactical bookmarks above and below gate, specially if it's a route you use a lot.

Citadels are meant to eventually replace player owned stations and be easier for ccp to work with because they aren't made of spaghetti code. There aren't really any significant disadvantages to them beyond functionality, but they will eventually be able to do everything a pos can do now.

First, get rid of the fucking active shield booster, unless something has changed suddenly those are still garbage on the Drake.
Next slap a shit load of shield extenders and those fancy smancy resist boosters (the active ones)
Lowslots are as many of those shield recharge thingies as you can fit and still actually turn on your mid slot modules and maybe some of those power diagnostics and a damage control.
