My game crashed during a civilion rescue mission.

When I booted it back up all my save data was gone except for my moe as fuck character pools.

Did steam cloud synching cause this? Or the 125 mods I have that have no conflicts whatsoever?

Should I put my power relay under my gts so I can put a gremlin there when I build a workshop, or just put it next to the awc and put the proving ground under the gts?

Doesn't really matter, if you're going to build everything, the first power relay is only temporary.
For maximum efficiency, have four staffable slots near the workshop. Generally speaking, plan it so you have a comm center and a power relay adjacent, since you'll always have at least one of each maxed out.
I'd say put a relay where you're excavating now under the GTS, workshop under AWC, comm center under paused excavation, whatever you want under the workshop. After you build relays on coils, tear down the first relay and build psi or whatever.
That's of you need a workshop right now. Otherwise wait and build it on level three of the center column.

I guess I'm not 100% certain on that. Most mods that are still working would have been fixed because DLC would often break stuff, so if people didn't update their mod no one would use them. Just check the last update date, and if it looks really old, check the comments to make sure the mod is still working order.

Its not an issue I've heard come up for months though, so chances are any mods not completed neglected don't have this issue.

Lethal Cook (would probably be my name in the piratez universe), a good runner, but cowardly and not great at putting bullets in doodz. Hopefully she gains some courage as she sees our successes. (The starter 6 troops appear to be free now, as opposed to earlier versions, so in addition to sentimental value it makes sense to try to keep them alive.)

Are you going with country coverage over landmass coverage there? Just asking, I'm not sure what the optimal strategy is for this game even being halfway through a .99 campaign. And curious what starting locations others think are best.

I did a normal .99a campaign for a year. Thing is, radar coverage really doesn't matter initially because with your small radar and trash bus, its pretty hard to get any landed ufos at first and you can't shoot anything down. Since your main staple of missions are the generated ones, like ratman rodeo, warehouse wars, and scorpion hunt, I am going off the theory that it is better to optimize your first base for optimal coverage with the max radar range instead of your starting small cover.

Once I get the overcharged radar, I'll cover all of Europe with a nice chunk of asia and africa. If I was going for pure country coverage for the initial radar range, I'd start near southern Germany. As it is, I usually dedicate my bases to make sure they can cover at least all of one continent.

tl;dr I think Initial radar coverage doesn't matter and once I get the big radar I'll cover all of Europe and more.

We've downed two academy troops. It's worth noting that we have not succeeded in killing them outright: no death scream, they simply collapse. Our weapons are that poor.

Still not sure what we'll do about those drones. We may have to run up, grab what we can from the corpses, and evac, if it comes to that.

When the hit percentages are 50% kneeling, that may be what's called for.

Morale is running low again. Storm goes berserk with her ammoless musket, causing no harm (earlier, she managed to down another Academy Researcher, but apparently that wasn't enough to keep her spirits up...)

We've cleared the facility proper. Now all we have to do is hunt down the remaining Academy organic units.

Storm is seriously injured by return fire from standing in the bushes like a panicking dumbass, but our gals get their revenge. Hilda runs up and guns down the Osiron Yeoman, while Combo Rashidova inflicts a gruesome death-by-chainsaw on the Researcher.

I think there's only one or two more enemies out there. We'll have to stay sharp.

An Osiron Yeoman jumps out of one of the ziggurats for a surprise stun attack and downs Hilda. Thank goodness it was only a harpoon stun gun, Hilda has contributed a lot to this mission.

We get our revenge on him and find another Academy Researcher who we land a lucky killing shot on, but the mission doesn't end...

Head to defaultgamecore.ini and gut down aircraft time(repair, rearm, transfer) by half. You'll be fine not tweaking the rest at the start, the more you play the more you'll see what annoys you and what you could try removing.

Don't start in Russia. Decent starting bonuses but you'll cry over interception times.

Buy motion trackers and don't be afraid to use them. Do consider defensive tools a lot, your soldiers can't hit everything.

Oh and, unlike X2, aliens usually care for their lives and treat Suppression and Overwatch with respect. Use those to pin aliens down and to advance into otherwise more dangerous positions. Suppression is probably god in this regard, because nothing short of a flank will have an alien budge while being suppressed.

Every single class is useful and has more then one viable build. Ask if you need any build advice. Defense, Support, and Offensive roles/abilities are all potentially good and you can't just go pure offense unlike vanilla xcom games.

The 1st month, you want to train as many as rookies as possible. Try to only take experienced soldiers to ufos for handling the outsiders. Outsiders are extremely scary. They are basically minibosses now with decent health pools, regenerating health and really good aim. They will kill people if you don't handle them carefully. I personally like to take gunners to early ufo mission to babysit the rookies and make sure I can pin the outsider in place if I can't kill them right away.

On abduction missions, a rookie needs one kill + the mission experience to rank up. On UFO missions they don't need any kills because there is a mechanic that awards extra xp for seeing advanced aliens (outisders count for this) so the bonus xp + the mission xp auto levels them.
There are now 3 subclasses: Psi, Officer, and MEC. A soldier can only be one of these, and only one. Both psi soldiers and officers want high will.
First research is xenobiology so that you can get council requests for corpses in exchange for scientists. In Long War, you actually will get alot of your engineers and scientists from council requests. After the xeno, go for the usual beam rush.

Once autopsies start rolling in, make F1 your best friend. Aliens will start getting all sorts of perks, and you really don't want to be surprised by them. Probably the one you'll have to be vary of the most is Covering Fire, as alien overwatch is common and a surprising amount of aliens will start receiving getting that perk. Obviously you won't get them at the start, but they'll be a nasty surprise once they do start showing.

Yes and no.
The problem with modded classes is that too many of them are minor variations vanilla classes (which I don't want to remove) so they all seem redundant.
Really, the only thing I'm looking for are classes that can fulfill unique roles (Rouge, Infantry Anarchist) or I guess something that mimics the old LW classes without the use of LW perk pack to avoid incompatibilities.

Get openxcom. Refer to the UFOpaedia page for any help with specific mechanics. Its different, but the mechanics of XCOM are all derivative of the original game, so laser rush, explosives, and killing everything the turn you find it is still a thing.

Never, NEVER split your men up solo, groups of 2 minimum, ideally groups of 3. That way when an alien walks around a corner and blasts them or reaction fires them, there's someone in position to shoot back keep eyes on the bastards.

Pass the first turn after the smoke otherwise the aliens will have their entire TU bar to reaction fire with and will rape you if there's any watching the ramp.

Lids have enough TUs to run from outside vision range and still hit a soldier with a OHK turning them into a zombie.

Just because you're out of sight range doesn't mean you're out of shooting range, everyone has squadsight in that regard.

Going to expand on this a bit. It's not just valid early, and not just in UFOs. If you're clearing barns or houses or just anything with a lot of corners, which involves splitting people up, put a live HE block on the point men. If they get downed, that entire area will get nuked and either the alien is going to go with it, or you'll have clear LOS to get back at him. This is if you don't opt to just chuck those HE in those areas at the first place and want to use those buildings somehow.

A much safer alternative than potentially having your squad blown up is giving live smokes to every second or third soldier in your squad. If they get shot and killed, the smoke will drop and hopefully help the rest of the group survive.

The first ethereal collective just pulled the "omg volunteer ur so worthy now you can join us, all according to plan" because XCOM awakened their own psionic ability and used it to kick the shit out of ayy. The abductions were the ethereals' attempt to gather some test batches and juice a few humans to see what's up with us, but they never got to establish bases and get work done without XCOM smashing their shit and walking out with all their labor.

The second game is them doing the same thing they were doing with the alien abductees from the first, they just do it peacefully now. Everyone signs up to live a healthy life, and the good ones get processed into enduring bodies with extreme psionic power so the ethereals can ditch their bodies. In XCOM EU they make a big deal about how they "failed to ascend." They couldn't find a way to live without a physical form, and their current bodies were succumbing to extreme atrophy to the point of uselessness.

I always leave the two worst rookies in my initial roster alone, their names change between campaigns and don't really matter but I call them Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

I consistently have a character I root for to die. In EW it was usually people from some country that didn't match whatever theme I was running. I'd run them out like a retard in most situations and see how far they got because it's fun to have someone survive or just die on their first mission. If they survived the crucible of fire(which was favorable perks since I always run training roulette) they'd presumably stop fucking up everything.

As of XCOM 2 and the ability to customize everything if there's any two or three squad members that I usually run together or perform particularly well together I make them the same nationality and give them gear to match each other.

Also I could never stand intentionally losing base personnel even though it was pretty much necessary in LW. Throwing away these average joes who picked up guns and decided to shoot aliens bothered me.

Thats the entire point in xcom though. That humanity IS special for some reason, which is why an conquering empire on a galactic scale stopped in its tracks when it found us. And given the aliens in xcom are all either psionically stuck at a very low level or physically a child, I'd guess it's our jack of all trades status.
You know what would've happened if we weren't special though? We'd be the next chopped up floater with all its higher brain functions removed and slaved to a psionic hive mind as we get used as disposable footsloggers till the ethereals do find the special race they are explicitly searching for.

I found that same issue but what has been helpful was to switch it down to commander periodically - I just did it in order to get my troops promoted (because legendary's time table is so long you'll probably end up with a squad mostly of purchased higher rankers since it takes something like 172 kills to reach top rank). That pretty much solved the too much difficulty for me.

You could try and start commander and switch legendary when it ges too easy, too.

Obviously this is for filthy cheets not hardcore mans who play legendary unmodded.

April 2601. I've been insanely lucky and had gals knocked out instead of killed so far... but I know that luck isn't going to last. The cause of 4 of those wounds was an assault on a Church cutter(?? what's the one that looks like a + shape?) which proved to be just too difficult and I retreated. Church matrons are actually scary hard to stun/kill in superhuman, it turns out. Not to mention the pain in the ass that is the warmaidens (I don't have too many weapons that can reliably punch through their armor yet).

Heh, I haven't been nearly so lucky. Lost 3 gals (all from the original crew) in my very first mission. Had some bad luck with the panic mechanic which snowballed into me having to make aggressive plays I would never go for.

Doesn't really matter though, as I've already stabilized so far. I made it to smoke grenades which is a huge boon for crew survival and just picked up the swimsuits for the juicy bonus TUs and stamina.

The main thing I've been noticing is just the sheer number of enemies that are packed into nearly every mission now. The toughest mission I did was an Academy cutter (forgot the exact name) and that ship still had like 10-12 people packed into it.

To be fair, it sounds like you fucked up by triggering every pod at once. The Queen is managable if you handle her alone. Stacking damage over time effects can chew through any of the Rulers quite quickly, and she needs to get in close so Rangers built to reliably crit can rip large chunks of her health off. But if you've got to deal with her stunning your soldiers and destroying cover while being shot at by other enemies? Yea, you're boned.

Use Battle Scanners or a Ranger with Phantom to scout. If you see a Ruler, set up an overwatch trap for them. You effectively get a whole round of shots at them before they react, which makes it a lot easier to chase them off.

Also, since no one actually answered, get evac all; overwatch all, though last I checked it locked you in neverending turns if you used overdrive with a spark; grab either free camera rotation and additional icons in the ability bar or what it's called, or grab the LW toolkit.
Toolkit already has a fix for the bar not showing any abilities and the toolkit camera control overrides free camera, or at least it does to me.
Grab perfect information if you enjoy seeing ayys landing 17% shots on you.

Aside from innate defense and dodge, because of course it has those, it has 120 hp in Legend.
Freeze lasts only one action.
If he uses devastate, you can save ONE soldier, the others will be disoriented, stunned, or incapacitated.
He also may or may not decide to whack one of your guys when he lands.
Devastate also cannot be stopped. Even if you kill it.
Other than that, normal archon attacks and icarus drop, but at least that can be nullified if you manage to hit him.
Also, at least on my toaster, audio starts lagging horribly when in proximity to that fucker, so you may or may not have a turn to shit your pants.

Why is this game so hard? I enjoy playing on Ironman in every game where it's an option, and naturally I do it in Xcom2 as well. Now, I'm on my third restart since I got the game. The first few missions are always fine and things generally progress smoothly. But then the same thing happens every time.

A few of my most useful grunts get wounded and I have to send rookies to bolster important missions. Missions that seem to have a sudden cliff-rise in difficulty. There's a metric fuckton of enemies and tasks that need to be completed in no time.

The latest mission was the worst. The objective was to destroy a relay. So I sneaked real close to it and got my guys in position. I blow it up in one turn and simultaneously take out two guards, dandy. But this triggers a troop transport, as well as alerting two patrols on the map, that ALL get to fucking move before I could do anything. I was completely demolished before I got a chance to move again. And I'm only playing on veteran.

Have you guys cleared the vanilla game on Ironman? Give me tips pls.

The one exception is in avatar facilities if you know exactly what you're doing. Even then, it's hard.
If you're having problems on veteran it's because you're not treating this game as you should, especially the concealment part.
Concealment is a bonus for the first patrol, not a long term tactic in missions.
Exception being a phantom ranger. Give him phantom when you can, then keep him out of sight. Scout ahead for pods, if possible overwatch trap them. If you're on a time limit, you at least know if it's safe to yellow move or not.
Aside from that, better weapons>better armor. If possible you should kill everything before they get a chance to shoot at you.

Plus, it actually gives a bit of health.
Still, if you don't play your cards right you could end up fighting mutons with ballistics.
Sure you have 3 more health, but the guy will shoot one of yours dead in the two turns it takes you to kill it.
This is for Legend, though. With the reduced health in lower difficulties it might be an acceptable strategy.

Shit, I can't remember what research unlocks the smoke grenades. I was thinking it was contacts:merchants but clearly not. Been trying a bit of a different approach this time, trying for captures since I'm usually already in melee range (have one or two sharpshooters ready to go if it doesn't work) and researching them back at base. I also feel more relaxed about research now that I am familiar with the tech tree from my other playthrough and feel like I'm making good progress there.

Agree with you about the # of enemies - have hit one or two landed scouts (the small square ships) and there's like 8 people in there!

The thing I notice about this run, and I'm not sure if it's due to difficulty 5 or the new version of Piratez, is that the early game weapon slog seems less bad - enemies come equipped with advanced weapons almost right off the bat, especially on landed scouts and the + ships. I found a rechargable laser pistol on the one church matron I managed to down, whereas I remember being stuck with muskets for a while in my original .99 difficulty 3 playthrough.

Honestly, for right now, I don't think I'd choose difficulty 5 for my typical play. I'm going to keep going with this campaign and hope it helps mitigate some of the snowballing, but it's almost too stressful. Difficulty 4 may be the sweet spot for me.

I shudder to think what the terror missions are going to look like, what with the number of enemies on every mission and the advanced weaponry they're coming with now. I've had two and ignored both (since I haven't contacted the mutant alliance yet). I think I'm going to try to put them off as long as possible.

Anyway, Contact Smugglers is what unlocks smoke grenades and lot's of other goodies you'll want. I've been skipping Progroms as well. Even on normal difficulty, I couldn't complete them with a six man squad, though I never did try with smoke grenades. There were just too many enemies, and even with weak weapons eventually people were wittled down and eventually knocked out or killed. There better be some serious benefits for doing the Mutant Aliiance research because I can't imagine how tough its going to be on superhuman. Honestly I'm probably going to skip it until I'm back to my comfy Bonaventura 14 man squad. Its risky business, and you can make plenty of money and progress initially just spamming the generated missions and going hard on capture research.

Even though its stressful, I'm still enjoying it. I wanted to enjoy .99A on regular, but I actually could tell I was snowballing the campaign before I even ended the first year. Amazing the difference between my full first play-through and this one even.

You came in the Raider class troopship with your squad of warriors, chosen by the Star God himself for a special mission. Gradus, Emeco and Tu'chan were with you, armored and sporting the heavy plasma. Everyone around you was dead, and you thought to yourself you would be soon, as well.

Hell it nearly saved me a mission once, except I rolled the dice on a 6% shot to kill the mind controller and actually hit them. I would've used the commissar shot to kill him otherwise since he was a max rank grenadier fully capable of killing 2 people and seriously injuring and removing the cover of another 3 on the aliens turn with salvo fired plasma grenades. I tested the save afterwards and that's exactly what he did end up doing too and it caused a squad wipe.

So yeah, if I hadn't got extremely lucky with a 6% hit it would've saved my squad.

Both new EU/EW and X2 are pretty buggy, especially in regards to LoS working however it feels like at the moment and questionable pathfinding. Stay here for a couple threads and you'll notice a quarter of the posts are about some bug or another. You'll no doubt come across more than a couple.

Basically your XCOM soldiers are a special ops team, not an army platoon, so you want to look for quick resolutions via flanking or rhinoing through their cover with grenades

If you fire a shot at an enemy in full cover you're doing it wrong, ESPECIALLY if it's your only choice in that moment

So when /xcg/ say git gud it's because they notice from the stats that players sometimes do drawn-out high-cover upfront engagements with the ayys--who are literally stronger and better armed at most stages of the game--and then complain because their soldiers don't behave like Master Chief or something
