Some more genetic algorithms - first time something actually evolved to follow a target.
They're pretty bad at it, but it's pretty cool that they actually try to reorient themselves when they veer off course. They do it with this inefficient full twirl, I'm not sure if that's just the way they learned it, or a bug in my code that leaves them no other choice.

A multiplayer ecosystem simulator, basically.
You'll design a creature, add things like sensing organs, claws, poison glands and stuff, and let it loose. It can then appear in other player's ecosystems and multiply.
I fully expect players will turn this into some hyper-agressive deathworld, which sounds pretty cool to me.

Like hardcore Spore creature stage, I guess.
Hardcore in the sense that creatures must actually be viable to survive, and they can die out.
It will mostly be like this old game called GooGrid, I had loads of fun with it before it died.
It was really cool how players competed with each other indirectly. If someone made a really effective swarm of bugs that filled the whole map, someone soon designed a creature that was specialized on only eating those.

I know, I know. I stopped following GM updates after the dissaster 8.1 was in my opinion, and started this project on 6.1 out of comfyness/lazyness. The looked on studio and found out is not that bad.
Eventually I'll probably move it to Studio to make an android version of the game, but is not my priority right now.

It's too cheerful compared to your other works. You should have a DKC 1-3 icy theme, in my opinion.

Other than that, the last music you've posted on your Tumblr… Man, holy shit.

I like the art style, but, l don't know, it's really hard to explain, but I always get the feeling that something is missing. Shadows maybe? Or just some life in general, some detail. That cat snowman, I mean, snowcat is a good start, but it should have more, in my opinion. Some track in the snow, for example.

>>151615328
Thanks, it's supposed to be cheerful with a bunch of cats walking around but I'll see how slowing it down changes it. The rest of the snow area where you are alone is cold drone music

>>151615418
I'll give that some thought, DKC ice themes are great. I kind of want the cat city to be cheerful and fun since of the 4 races they're the playful/comedic group, and the rest of the snow area is cold drone music, so after you go through the lonely cold snow region you are finally home at the cat city. But if it's too cheerful I'll definitely go for DKC style stuff as you said.

And thanks man, glad you like it!

I agree, right now I just have basic tiles from my artist (maybe like 6-7 tiles for each area total) since we're still making progress, soon he will go back and do more tiles and sprites. I have a huge art assets needed list and there will be a lot more to make the area more interesting, along with npcs walking around, cats throwing snowballs at each other etc.

save references to the transforms you are going to be accessing frequently in variables and assign them in Start(), that way you avoid lookups, just remember to handle them properly if you are destroying and creating them constantly.

I thought of a cute thing that I would put in a game if I were selling it and somehow figured out how to put a flag in the game that tells the game whether it was purchased or downloaded.

I would make it so the first boss you fight keeps respawning whenever you kill him. It just reboots the script that brings in the boss whenever you bring his health to zero.

Also realized that at some point the function which calculates which tile you're mousing over stopped working properly.

stop now. and don't do it.

That's the only advice I can give for an engine dev.

They're literally re-inventing the wheel, while not learning anything. If you want to learn about engines, the best starting point would be to contribute to an existing engine.

So, if you really want to get into engine dev, find an opensource engine and contribute to that, and learn from the codebase.

Unless the engine contains a bunch of links to references about each section of code the renderer is going to be completely indecipherable for a beginner. You can't just read the source code for some shit like voxel cone tracing and go "aha, I get it!", there's multitudes of papers published on that shit because it's fucking complicated. And if you don't already know how it works you're never going to be able to look at the source for it and know what to google for to find an explanation.

Hey guys pls help
I am using GameMaker and am having problems with resolution.
When I set view in room to 160x120 and Port on screen to 320x240, it looks fine both windowed and full screen.
Any other resolution (been trying to do 640x360 up to 1280x720 for HD) looks fine windowed but when I go full screen the pixels look uneven. When I move around, certain pixels get bigger and smaller than others and it's fucked. I haven't been able to find anything helpful online yet.
Pls help, I need to figure this out.

No I'm not, just because a source can be viewed online doesn't mean it's open source.

holy shit!

The open source definition is maintained by the open source initiative. There's a very particular definition. https://opensource.com/

FOSS just means Free and Open Source, that is GPL like and Open Source. Whereas Open source licences doesn't always have the GPL like clause to copy the license.

MIT is an open source license. GPL is a free software license. FOSS just includes both.

UE4's code base is different. UE4 is entirely a propriety license. Just because it can be viewed doesn't mean it is open source.

Can you change and distribute UE4 codebase?

How is collision resolution (NOT detection) handled in an entity component system?
I can detect just fine, but I don't know how to code reactions to collisions, especially if they affect the other entity. Like a sword would hurt the other entity, if its able to be hurt. A teleporter would move the other entity. How do you code that?

This is a very complicated way of saying you're not smart enough.

Which you should never say about yourself by the way. The first step to being able to do something is believe you can do it, the next step is to keep trying until you do it.

The thing most people do is not believe in themselves or give up after trying only once, but most people also can't make games or program, you don't want to be like most people.

- Look at real life deserts and the towns and villages that are located there. Are they like that city in Uncharted 3? The tiny oasis outpost in ATLA? A bustling hub of activity like Vegas?
- Look at different geological structures and landscapes that exist in deserts around the world.
- Add some fantastic elements, like areas where the ground is littered with glass or gems (maybe they glow in the dark?): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libyan_desert_glass
- Don't be afraid to do weird shit with the environment, either: it's a game, so anything goes.

Shadow Hearts: https://youtu.be/C9TEFC1vDAo?t=41s

They are probably tons of older ones that also break up the mold, but can only think of semi-recent ones at the moment. Resonance of Fate does interesting things depending on the type of firearm you use; maybe you can do something similar depending on the type of sword you use.

Can we try listing some of the genres and the skill levels required to do them at a "Basic" level. Add 2d or 3d if you want to be specific.

3d novice:
FPS (A model for a gun and bullet and knowing how to manipulate a camera using mouse movement and shoot by clicking)
Third person platforming (Getting familiar with player collisions, and animation blending)

3d: Intermediate
Mech with customization (Or games that primarily rely on the player moving/interacting with interchangeable parts)
RPG (Requires knowledge of having multiple actors interact with each others variables and how to make status ailments)

You got any others or suggestions you want to add?

It's basically searching for the component that's attached each time. It's not bad if you're not accessing that component multiple times. But if you do need to fiddle with the components a lot, it's better to just do something like
>T newObject = gameObject.GetComponent<T>()
and access it that way.

Has anyone used Javascript in Unity? From what I've seen it looks like ass.

Does it allow lambda functions or treat functions as first-class objects?

https://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/Array.html
There's no map, filter or reduce methods on arrays? Literally what's the point?
>>
>>151672368
it's not about which engine is better, it's about which engine has the most support

if you're literally asking what engine to use, you need the one with the most support because you're a dummy with no experience

that's why the 3rd option exists - once you know what you're doing you can branch out from GM/unity

I'm making a pokemon go clone for learning purposes and was wondering how they "store" all the pokestops? I mean you could have millions of pokestops in the world at once, I feel like the sever having an array of them to search for every time a player updates their position isn't going to work. Quadtree? Still seems it would get way too big though.

I'm guessing one "stop" would simply be 2 floats (long/lat).

The destination_x/y variables store the position it's moving to on my grid and sets it as OCCUPIED while it moves. It's to prevent my objects from overlapping each other and choosing the same spot.

The moveX/Y variables add to the x and y position to give the player that sliding effect when it moves.

Here is the code.

Please stop this engine meme. You don't need to and you shouldn't use engines to make literally everything, especially 2D games, it won't make it much easier, it's just bloat and loss control. C/C++ with SDL and OpenAL for sound and you are set for 2D games, provided you don't need shaders or graphical acceleration( If you do, OpenGL is not that hard to use either ). So long as you don't link anything else, it will even work cross-platform (including android, ios and even raspberry pi).

For 2D games it certainly is. Unless you're using something really simple like RPG maker but that comes with incredible loss of control. Even for 3D games general engines introduce certaon amount of bloat and some loss of control, that's why you see most AAA companies using in-house engines that were built to fit specific games. I mean if you really think a game like Overwatch would run on Unity as well as on the in-house engine they use then you are simply put, a retard.

New to programming, I'm playing around with C#, making sort of a pokemon rip off.

How would I go about structuring classes for pokemon esq attacks? I have a class called QuickAttack, then I have a function that inserts QuickAttack's properties into the UI. How do I make it so I can use this function for ANY attack? Do I have to make an Attack class, then a QuickAttack class within that?
>>

>>
>>151677402
and it runs like shit. they made it for as cheap as possible
>>
>>151677416
Just have one class Attack that contains all the data an attack contains (name, PP, damage, type, special/physical, etc.). Then you can create a map from name => Attack and put all the attacks you want in that map or load them from a file or something. IMO doing it with a bunch of subclasses and that kind of shit is just going to slow down how quickly you can create new attacks.

In a different type of game where the attack actually does something and isn't just a bunch of numbers I haven't found a better solution than subclassing yet.
>>
>>151677416
you shouldn't have a class for each attack, you should have just one attack class, and some sort of file that lists all the attacks and their properties that the Attack class uses

>>
>>151677880
>>151677938
Ah okay. So the Attack class is just a bunch of empty properties, then I add values to those properties when I create an instance of the attack. How would I use a map/file? I only know how to do I/O streams with text files. For example, would I make a quick attack text file, then open a stream to it and have the first line be the attack name, second line be the accuracy etc?
>>
>>151678458
You could do that or use a format like XML. C#'s standard library contains an XML parser I think, and it would allow you to make files with the properties in different order and whatnot. Basically making your shit a little bit more robust. But your way would be fine too.

It might get a bit slow if you're reading a ton of files during gameplay, but if you do all the reading when the game starts you can have it be a part of the "loading screen" anyway. It would probably be preferable to have all attacks in a single file desu but starting out it's fine to have them in separate files.

The map would just be a static Dictionary<string, Attack> in the Attack class, so if I wanted to look up an attack by name I could do Attack.attacks[attackName] and get an Attack back.
>>
>>151678385
just saying that AAA companies aren't obliged to use their own engines just because. Heck, many of the are already using proprietary engines. Also, Unity actually runs pretty well as long as you don't be a retard when making your game.

I'm working on making that control changing working. I have two options to choose from before I finish:
- let the user change every single control
- leave some things set so they're dependable, (like Escape to bring up the pause menu and Enter to accept options)
Which one should I go with?
>>
>>151699428
You can't really go wrong with allowing the user to change everything. Most people don't bother and those that do, generally know what they are doing.
>>
>>151699428
Allow full customization. And have a button to reset everything to defaults in case someone fucks something up somehow.

I do truly feel honored that you ask. I really do. thank you. but making a game for me is not something you take lightly. I think of this as a very serious proposition that asks for a very big commitment. a commitment of years of endless hours of restless nights, with a skilled and professional team that fully respects and trusts one another. sharing the same passion and vision.

if you truly feel no doubt about yourself and you are honest serious then then contact me in skype at "bnyueto" then maybe something can. I can't guarantee

good idea
I just had another idea: have the menus accessible the same way as in Windows-- that is, Alt-(first letter)

Holy Shit!

I now know what Jim Thompson was talking about in Savage Night, about the girl walking on the foot of her one tiny leg. I thought it was just another one of his demented drunken passages.

Okay, so since No Man's Sky is DoA, how would I go about making a better game than it?

Hover vehicles, land rovers, much more variety, more items, an actual skill and upgrade path, light multiplayer elements, base building...

What else?
>>
>>151711145
MULTIPLAYER.
