Alright, you guys telling me to animate win; here's some roughs for the Dryad boss fight. Her two major attacks are going to be a root slam attack, and the other is a piercing attack where root tendrils shoot from the bottom of the screen. (she has two major roots, animating one at a time)

Added some weapon enchantments. I'm not thrilled with the system but it's good enough for the demo. Basically it just supports raw stat and skill modifications, but nothing fancy like bonus damage, changing weapon delay, return damage, etc. In the real game I will probably move towards prefixes/suffixes that have fixed effects.

Anyway all the bonuses in this video aren't very exciting because they're all tier 1 items. The higher the tier, the more enchantments it can get, and the better those enchantments can be. A tier 5 item can modify up to 5 skills/stats - stats up to +15 and skills up to +5.

ok i changed my light to be in the same direction as your's and i ended up with the same pixel problem. doing higher sampling does make it "blend in" more but you really can't do much else besides keep upping the sampling because that side is shadowed and because its such a small image =/

i would say anywhere from 2500 - 3500 samples and i can hard see the pixel difference anymore on the "shadow" side of the cube image

all "combat" is, is a process by which you delete pieces from the playfield.
1HK means one "hit" returns one deletion. if you have a system by which multiple "hits" are required for one deletion then your system is bloated. you havent added complexity, you've added a buffer, grind, repetition.

Enemies can now inflict status effects through their melee attack. Right now, there's a 5% chance and it always lasts for 60 minutes, and strength is based on the enemy level. I'll change it if it ends up being necessary. Right now only spiders use it, and they poison you.

Exactly, we agree then, the problem is not that there's not much that can be done. It's that marketing requires a proper budget.
The amount spent doesn't have to be huge anyways, $2k would give you a pretty decent audience if you spent them wisely. If you don't have $2k to invest in your game (which is your business), then you are probably better off working for someone else until you can raise the funds, otherwise you risk killing your game (you can only release it once).
If you have $2k and don't want to risk investing in your game, then it's probably shit anyways.

Thinking that your game is going to automatically sell because it's on Steam is beyond retarded.

Speaking about point and click, check out Fungus for Unity, might be just what you need to make something more than text.

I have a few quick questions.
Why aren't there more engines listed, like roblox etc.
Is it because they're inferior to what is linked here or those are just few to start off.

Second, do I need an IDE if I'm going to be using an engine.
I've been reading a book on C# programming and I've been using windows visual studio IDE but I still don't really know what an engine is.

And third, is it a good idea to try and make a playable game without real art graphics using basic representations (simple lines) and then ask an artist friend (which I have but he's busy for a few months) to do the art for an already somewhat ready game prototype that runs on stick figures?
Or is that a godawful idea?

I can't speak for everyone, but I'm pretty sure it's because people only like engines that are very generalized and allow you to build whatever kind of game you want.

From an engine like Unity, you create and attach scripts in the engine itself, and then just click them from the UI to open them in a text editor. I don't know if there's some more advanced techniques that would warrant an IDE, but you'll know if you get there I guess. You definitely don't need one to start with.

This is the IDEAL way to do it. There's a bunch of advantages with this; the artist has something concrete to work on, they know you aren't just a worthless ideaguy who isn't actually going to do anything, you're less likely to have decided to quit the project since it's an already working prototype

Also Godot doesn't support C# until the next update (2.2)

An IDE is basically just a text editor which makes compiling a one-button-press task.

An engine is a totally different thing. Engines usually come with some sort of support with usual tasks. Like built in physics, loaders for the assets, they can make menu creating more easy etc. Most engines (but not all of them) has some sort of GUI for this task, thus level editing, and basically game creating ends up a rather visual task (while if you don't use an engine, or you use an engine without a GUI (like Löve), you will only see the results of your code after compiling or when running the code). However a GUI for an engine is not the same thing as an IDE.

Inventory added.
I made it flexible, so i can grab any item and slap an inventory component on it and then as soon as the player equips it, he has an access to it.
In the video i placed the inventory on the backpack model, so if the player equips it he can store items he found in there, and if he tried to for example reload a weapon, it will automatically check if the backpack has any valid ammo for that weapon stored in it.
He can also get another backpack, load it with items and put it on some friendly npc to log it around as a pack mule.
The next step will be providing some simple interface to allow the player to throw stuff out, in case he carries like 20 milk bottles and needs space for more ammo.

Basically there will be couple of open maps where the player will run around and do some storyline quests, the gameplay itself will pretty much be fighting with couple of varied weapons, couple of puzzles, and some physics based movement with the grappling hook.

May I ask how can you monitor GPU performance? I never understood all the specifications of a video card. I usually just check the CPU usage and the RAM usage of my game, and there is this monitoring tool which came with my video card, however I don't know what values should I care for (I just usually use it to check the temperature). The only thing I have noticed so far is that VRAM usage increases by 2-3 MBs if the game's running.

The little bullets gray out and lower as you fire your weapon, and the glass tube at the top fills up to show you how many rows of bullets you got left. The meter itself fills up for charging/overheat, and while I feel like it's not amazing, it works.

But I got a problem, I plan on adding two extra modes for the player to toggle between, but I need to add something to this meter that shows the player they're switching between the two modes. I don't have a lot of room to work with here. Someone suggested I add a piston that pops up, seeing as the HUD is mechanical looking. I just don't know where would be a good place for it.

Yeah, something like that. The bottom bar is actually your Hustle Meter, which fills up and increases your reputation, which is the stars. The stars act like multipliers when earning tips.
The Special meter fills up when you take care of customers whose interest meter is still in the "hot zone". Once its filled, you can hit up customers for private dances and earn even more money.

In my game, I use a "base gun" object, with defaults for every possible property. I also have some "gun type" objects when I want a particular template (missile weapon, laser weapon, etc) to base other weapons upon.

Actual weapons are created using this method:

gun.randomized_property = random_range(1,50);

etc.

But I want to give each weapon instance a custom, unique bit of code to run when they get an upgrade (their event_user(10)). How can I do this when creating a new weapon as shown above? I don't want to give my "base weapon" object dozens of pre-defined upgrade types for actual weapons to use with shit like extra_damage_percentage_on_upgrade, that sounds absurdly time-consuming.

How do I make unity read from a text tile properly? I have it so it reads it fine on the first load but then when I change the file by writing to it the text does not update when it is read. I even try to make it reload the file so it can do that but nothing happens.

I'm in UE4 not Unity, but what I did was very simple. I made a material, made it translucent and added a vectorparameter and plugged it into the emissive channel. Then I just instanced that material and changed the gradient colour of the vector for each sign. For a bit more glow I used point lights just in front of the neons to make it look a bit brighter.

There's another way to make a material light up like that that I know of (at least in UE4), but it probably doesn't play well with textures. It's essentially making the material a 'bounce' card, aiming a spotlight directly at it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4c8JCfsgiJQ here at 6:23 you can see it in action. Unity is PBR now iirc so it should perform relatively similarly, I'm not sure how it goes displaying textures but it's another thing you could try.

Idea guy here.
Multiplayer class-based team game. One team plays as ants, the other team termites. The classes are things like "worker ant", "warrior ant", etc.
Each team has a queen that they must defend, if the queen dies they lose. The queen is AI controlled, it can't move, just does some very weak attacks in an attempt to defend itself.
Of course there needs to be climbing on walls, maybe some basic fortification building as well.

I would make it but I don't know anything about multiplayer.

Hey, so remember that $2,500 I was offering if you could port my game (Future Fragments) to HTML5? Turns out you don't need C++ experience, just a high amount of GameMaker and HTML5 skill. The original programmer had the following to say;

"they dont need to know cpp for the html because they wont have to port the pseudo cpp parts at all since a) browsers dont even support libraries afaik b) the html build will be a vastly simplified version of the whole thing so they wont need shit like the editor, proper memory management, or a custom sound engine--they honestly only need to port like half of the whole thing, and native gm is enough for what they need

native gm--they load all the sounds in the project and reference that in audio_play instead of my wrapper methods. like not all parts of my code are clean but my simplistic choice of words doesnt ever leave any questions as far as what this or that line does, its self explanatory, and i comment arguments in the very first block of every script

i commented a lot of the stuff in there, but if they cant figure something out i can just hold their hand through it. tho iirc just the entity loop is a bit of a mess, coz gm doesnt have proper scoping, but other than that the port should be pretty straightforward for any english-speaking coder"

It's not working though it just looks creepy. It's because of the hands: the hands are disproportionate to the body but proportional to the head, which is oversized. An oversized head looks fine, but oversized hands look fucking weird. Add the longish fingers on top of that and it just looks really unsettling.

That shit's not really part of the engine.

The main menu is a separate scene from the gameplay. Loading simple scenes even from disc is so fast you might even be able to do the pause menu as a separate scene. Or just set timescale to 0 and turn off the physics engine when the game is paused and assuming your shit's correctly written everything should stop.

Hi again, it's music-anon. This game still has my heart, and looks very Capcom-Disney in a good way. I hope you don't mind me giving some feedback on the game design, but here I go nevertheless:

Nice window-shutting transition, by the way. Do you think you could put a timer on the score tally before it starts, so there's enough time to process each piece of the score individually? (Skippable at the press of a button, of course, but it's a bit counter-intuitive to have the score separated into pieces if there isn't enough reaction time to read them)

Is the HUD a WIP? I noticed you got rid of the score/villager count, and I thought that was very useful while I was playing before.

Thanks for adding (what I think is?) a health system, too. Are you sure you want to give the player more score for time than grabbing more villagers? I've been playing the latest demo on your itch.io for a while (I got to Level 6, Hi-score 6308) and I realized that it might be more fun to grab as many villagers as you can before the timer runs out. In fact, I wonder if you could make the timer score worth more the closer the timer is to 0 instead of the opposite, because then there's a tradeoff for finishing too early versus trying to rack up points and risk running out of time, and I think that could make the game even more interesting.

(I'm also curious about the lives counter in the score: Somehow I feel like multiplying each life by x1000 is too much, especially given that it racks up for each level you beat... Do you think you could make it significantly smaller, like x50? It would be very subtle, but would become more apparent as the levels go on.

... Of course, this is assuming the game is heavily score-focused, at least, that is the impression I got while I played/looking at this .gif.

If you're hand-drawing your rotated pixel art, it shouldn't look like garbage unless you are also a garbage artist.
(Caveat: If you're drawing at an incredibly low resolution, e.g. 16x16 player sprites, you will rarely be able to draw good-looking rotated pixel; most games get around that by displaying their rotation frames for as short as possible.)
