Because UE4 doesn't have proper render layers. masking, or custom depth that works like I want it to I use some really fucky vector math to drive an alpha mask to make some objects only visible when viewed through a 2d circle placed in 3d space. Means that right now I can only have one circle in the world at one time, but for what I plan to use this for (a cariable magnifying glass that reveals hidden spoops in VR) that's acceptable.

I've been looking at this too long and can't decide if it looks fluid enough. The raise the bow section is a little wonky, but I'm pleased with the rest of it.

I got suggestions here about zooming out the camera when the player dashes. So here's the result.

Apart from that, I am slowing down the camera movement each time you press the dash button. So the more you press dash, the slower the camera will track you (once you stop pressing the dash button for a certain time, cam speed goes back to default).

This is to prevent the cam from frantically trying to chase around the fast moving player. The effect is worst when you dash back and forth between two points.

I think it needs more work, but I'm itching to fix other parts of the game, like making the enemies finally fight back.

Thanks for the kind words. He closes his eye to aim for that attack because all other attacks he does the same. It's a priming thing so the player knows he is planning to attack. It's also hard to rotate his head to have him more looking up with so few pixels, and it looks good enough to me to have him not move his head as well.

Arrow would be close to the feather, it would make it move.

I haven't played Witcher 3 but here are usual methods to address that:

1. increase the space but keep items the same pixel height and width, so you see more items on screen

2. have HD versions of all item images and use those. scale everything to maintain the layout of everything. you'd only need to do this if the resolution increase is so significant that the current assets look blurred when scaled

3. the least ideal: you do nothing to the added space. it becomes whitespace

Why not have two arrays. One for current position and one for planned position. At the start of the checks, have each character write their current position in the planned positions, then when each character selects their new position, have them write in the planned movements their current position as open. It's red vs blue for teams, but attacks can hit any team regardless of affiliations. A big part of the game is a bunch of the attacks have like a charge state and then other characters have moves that can move you, so you can be pushed into teammates attacks, or the casters orientation can be screwed up.

Yeah, I had it zoomed in to make sure the arrow object was spawning in the right place and never put it back. I also need to make sure the back end of the pointer is on the same step as the front end. And I need to create a camera object that shifts in steps instead of all at once.

For right now, I'm just working on mechanics issues and trying to get a playable game. All those things will be fixed later.

I'm a tad worried the characters don't pop enough, and when I add trees and grass in the back with environmental stuff, they will blend in too much and strain the eyes. The color of the ranger already kind of does this against the tiled grass sections.

this is a very broad subject but i'm gonna try and fly over it. in my opinion, there are 2 major schools of thought.

-the first school of thought-

change your way of thinking. a game isn't actually a real thing. "game" is just an abstract term we use to describe a set of rules, which is how you should think of games if you want to create them. what you need to do is find interesting rules and combine them with other interesting rules. the "playing" part then becomes finding solutions to those rule sets and if successful, collecting rewards. fundamentally, this is really all there is to games.
if you are successful in creating a set of rules, you have to conceal it by, for example, finding real world analogues for those rules. "this point can not be enclosed within various geometrical forms" becomes "these flashlights can not shine upon this man". "this variable will be decrease by one per second for as long as this point is enclosed within this geometrical form" becomes "this man will be shot if seen". and so on and so forth.

-the second school of thought-

go the other way around. instead of creating rules and finding analogues in life, look at life and derive the rules which govern it. then change the rules and think about how those changes would affect things.
to give some examples, you can make rules less complex to give people a taste of things they'd otherwise not understand. you can make rules more complex and make boring things interesting.


in closing, i'd like to say that i personally think that it's much easier to come up with ideas if you follow the second school of thought while the first school of thought makes better games. my shitposts will typically consist of ideas created by following the second school of thought.

Undertale had 101 tracks, but at least one wasn't used, and it also used slowed-down versions for the Genocide route. But I think it depends mostly on the type of game you're making. If your game has a ton of worlds/levels/characters/etc. and you want them to be unique, you might end up with lots of themes. On the other hand, if it's very straightforward and somewhat short, you might not need a lot of tracks.

I was briefly serializing each object in the list as a string individually, then saving it in a list of strings, and then deserializing the strings one by one on load, but I figured it would just be cleaner and easier to do it with XML. Now I'm having an inheritance issue(XmlArrayItem that's a derived class). I know I've solved this before but I guess I just can't remember what I did right now.

Thinking it over is actually why I switched back to XML. This was my first attempt to do JSON because it looked cleaner, but after working with it for a bit and encountering the same problem as >>150909684 I figured I'd just return to what I know. If your game is decent enough for tons of people to pirate it, you'll probably get a good amount of sales, too. I wanted to cut out the cruft and process into a consistent naming scheme because the arbitrary mix and match of python_case and CamelCase as well as inconsistent use of abbreviations and blah blah blah all made me want to throw up in my mouth. Do you know a library for writing a "schema" to convert from one data format to another? Otherwise you're no help to me. Yes, I know using the raw XML would have been much easier, but meh. There was kind of a lot of it too.

I use BSON for levels and JSON for dialogues and event scripting.
I have methods that can be called from the JSON files if part of a whitelist. Used for triggering scene changes and such.
