my reactions are on point but i need to start memorizing the character specific combos and work on my defense. ill even put myself in blockstrings in real matches to practice seeing strings because there's no way to otherwise. my pressure sucks too

I used to go to my locals often, but haven't been in months.

I go 2-2 pretty much guaranteed, but have made it to grand finals before when none of the killers showed

I've also been to a couple majors and there are a LOT of people with massive venues. Try not to get overwhelmed, warm up in casuals or training before you play if possible. Do NOT warm up against a total noob EVER; playing against their bad habits and mash DPs can tilt your strategy for actually good players

You're not going to win your first time. There are a lot of bad players who still show, so 1-2 isn't a bad goal.
Losers is a lot easier than Winners.
0-2 is not the end of the world. Have fun and learn from the players who beat you. Play as much casuals as you can after the tournament; the general skill level at a meetup is far higher than online.

You are most likely going to lose hard. Consider it a learning experience.
Calm yourself before you start. Deep breathe in good order and focus on the game.
Don't try too hard. What I mean by this, if you cannot do more "complex" combos reliably whenever situation allows it go for something more reliable you can pull off. You don't want to have tons of dropped combos in a match.
If you drop something carry on. Don't fret "oh shit I dropped a combo" and focus on the game. Shit happens. I've dropped critical combos against better players and still managed to clutch it out because carry on.
Play solid. Focus on anti-airing and raw basics and see what your opponent likes to do you. If they jump a lot you can start to anticipate and look for it and all succesful anti-airs are free damage, especially if your character has good anti-airs and on top of that, it keeps them away.
You could take the risky strat that if you lose one game, you just got good info on your opponent and then turn it 2-1 against you. Up to you.
If your opponent can anti-air reliably don't jump in like an idiot.
Ask for advice when you lost. If your opponent cares about learning process he might share some basic tips or even explain in-depth. Keep a notepad and pen with you if necessary.
Remember v-reversals exist.

And most importantly have fun. Seriously, if you are playing just because you want to win you're in for immediate burnout that kills motivation.

You'll know what you want to do when it happens. Games generally run all night at meets, so if you can contain your BabyRage , you might be glad you stuck around.

Going with friends is great too - you can give eachother info that the other may not have seen. Try not to play casuals with your friend and instead mix with as many non-shit players as you can.

The top players in your local scene have probably been going through multiple games for years. Don't be too upset when you lose - use it as a learning experience.

Every attack that hits you is a learning experience; you're being taught by a better player about what works.

Nerves hit everyone, depending on the person it can be good or bad but the good news is; if you get used to it, it will affect you less than you think.

Look at your bracket and try to find out who you're playing next, catch a glimpse of how they play either by searching for replays on youtube or find them practicing.
If you know who/what you're facing there is less reason for fear and/or surprise.

If you get excessively anxious or nervous, bring chewing gum, best case scenario it helps alleviate the pressure a bit. worst case scenario it's annoying for the guy sitting next to you but that's all good in the face of winning.

Stuff I recommend is try not to eat or drink anything with too much caffeine or sugar before tournament/match, this is different if you happen to be addicted to caffeine in which case only take the minimal amount.
The reason I recommend this is a sugar crash+staggering loss can literally defeat you for an entire tournament.

And finally, most importantly, you are not one of the greats, it's your first tournament.
Go there to learn and even if it feels weird walking up to a good player asking for tips
maybe you know a guy that knows a guy and you can talk about matchups and strats and all that jazz.
I played Dudley in SF4 so there wasnt much help for my character personally but just by exchanging this type of information with other quality players you can perhaps explore other characters and get pretty convincing subcharacters as a result.

I'm pretty serious about learning and improvement when I play in tourney, so I take things harder than normal.

There are actually a lot of situations where your opponent is positive after a normal; most alpha counters reset the situation and give you a nice chunk of grey life to work for.
They're mostly(?) free to a tick grab style option select, but ticking honestly isn't great in 5, since post-throw oki is very weak for most characters. Your opponent will want to be throwing heavier attacks for damage anyway, and most medium attacks get clean hit by alpha counter.

The higher level of it is determining when you need to counter vs. saving the meter for VT combo/pressure/comeback.

On wakeup, neutral jump, backdash, or DP beat grab. They are all very risky since you will get hit by attacks and forced back into a similar situation.

-Lp spd doesn't leave that much benefits. You can always mash jab on wakeup to beat any post lp grab dash or so if they press anything.
-Lk to running grab is very common tickthrow. Just mash fastest normal if they did it afar or try jumping.
-Any fully charged st hp is very punishable by most of the cast. Just backdash if you are in range and punish with whatever you can.

Sizelimit is 3mb for normal boards and 4mb for /gif/.

Just to add on to this, LP SPD is -2 on dash up meaty. Everything else is +2.

You can just sweep the charged fierce. The armor doesn't protect low. Also, if you see them going for a charge and react fast enough, it isn't armored until later in charged start up. It's pretty fucking unsafe in regards to start up.

because her unique thing is extended parries. asuka "players" like that because it busts scrubs easily. it's already pretty rooted into her and her mom's style, like wavedashing with mishimas, so given the general avoidance of huge change/overhauls since tekken 4, there's no way he'd bother changing her gimmick.

she's just been designed as a character for scrubs and fit to beat other scrubs. and that's it. she's fundamentally flawed, but even then he could start by making chicken parry not damage her and just kinda throw break instead. now there will always be a reason to try and make reads with parries.

Why Capcom? Why don't you care more about this game? Why don't you care as much as we do? I WANT this game to be awesome, it has never had so much traction and yet Capcom is almost deliberately hampering the game in every way possible.
From the lack of communication to stuff simply not working and promises not being fulfilled.
We're half a year into the game and the fight statistics are still broken, dailies are still not present, keyboard rebinding isn't in, DirectInput is still busted, fight history sometimes doesn't show up, overpriced DLC... The list goes on and on! It frustrates me greatly that a game that I really love gets this treatment from its creator.
What is it Capcom? Incompetence? Arrogance? Glee?
You can bet your ass I'll be avoiding any game published by Capcom like Nurgle's Rot, if only to get some kind of vengeful satisfaction.
I know this post isn't very constructive, but I needed to vent my frustration. I don't want to stop playing this game, but Capcom is doing their very best to bully me away from it!
