So yesterday I got the feedback that I needed to make falling on death for Boku more understandable when trying to get a puzzle cube to a lower area.

One of you suggested a snake biting him but not the cube, and I loved that idea but the QT snake modeling went badly as you could have seen in the last thread so I replaced it with a plant monster coming out of a log.

Since he doesn't kill the puzzle cube you take a different route back down, if you were to push the puzzle cube on the smaller routes down, it could be against a wall so you couldn't get behind it to push it away from the wall, unlike if you push it down the plant monster route.

I'm hoping that design will be understandable enough for me not to need text/terrible tutorial bubbles or something at all.

That's why i had to have an image of him on the title screen. If the player sees that before they start the game they should know how to look at character correctly.

I did want his movement to be kinda camp/clumsy and non-threatening,
I will be adding more skeletons to the game but I wanted to portray that he is one of the good guys.

The more important part I think is that you see the cushion pretty much edge-on. Should be able to see a bit of the top, assuming your head is above the cushion.

My original intention was to have the colors fade darker as the background got farther away but it came across as a shadow so I tried to roll with that. Light sources are supposed to be the two white bits on either side of the door. They may or may not eventually be replaced with candelabras or some such, as those were providing the light in the reference I used and it adds to the decor.

I see what you're trying to do. I think that's still a little confusing (WHY does it not kill the cube but it kills you?). That being said, if you put one of your little hint kitties at the start that says the monster has a hungering specifically for bunny-shaped cubes then that may be passable. Problem 1: It's not just drawing the boxes. It's hooking them up to their data sources and tracking what the user interacts with. It's three times as much code as you think it is, easily, even without accounting for all the bookkeeping necessary to do animated transitions and that kind of thing.

Problem 2: If you change ANYTHING this code touches, you have to do that part over again. If you haven't correctly anticipated what kind of changes you'll need to make, that means you're doing a ton of work to come up with exactly the same results you had before. But setting up your code for that kind of rewrite is ten times more painful than doing it "the wrong way" in the first place, and the only way to learn how to do this is by fucking up many many times.

Experienced UI programmers are jaded and not fun to work with. Intermediate UI programmers will hate you for wanting them to self-flagellate. And programmers so inexperienced that they've never done UI will invariably get in over their heads and bring down the whole project.

Changed it to a Poison jelly cube inside since the puzzle cubes are made out of jelly it survives the jelly, but the player dies if he falls into it/touches it

There are two different ways to do movement in classic 2D platformers.

1.) it's all just scripted. If you press the jump button, it tells the game to move your dude upwards for "x" amount of time and then to go downwards until they collide with the floor.

2.) you use physics. If you press the jump button, it tells the game to apply upward force to your character and then you have gravity that is always pushing your character downwards.

With momentum "physics" based movement, disappearing/reappearing blocks for an instant will push you out of its bounds when they spawn and that momentum violently threw my character out of the level.

This depends on how your physics engine handles intersection, and what you've described is simply a common hack-ish solution. Anyway, physics-based can cheat. Day 18 of trying to make video games

Started very, very rough early work on animation. Never really done animation before so it's a bit of a challenge.

It's really simple actually. Background is divided in depth layers.
Layers close to the camera will move faster, and layers far away will move slower.
For a floor with heavy details like the ones on a carpet it can get a little tricky, and would need a lot of layers, but is not imposible either.

New day/night mechanic.
When the time's up the sunlight will rise from the bottom of the screen giving you a few more seconds t reach your goal. It also looks way better than having everything light up suddenly like if the sun was a spotlight. Still have to tweak the speed a little and may do the gradient at the end more subtler-

I assume you use CharacterMovement Component. It has a function called "Set Movement Mode" It turns out this component has many modes for moving, including flying. So I'd bet on going back and forth between setting the mode to walking and flying. Also tweak some defaults, it seems that default flying has a lot of inertia

Added ways to bound the camera based on the player being in certain regions.

Something I learned is that the player detection region should be shorter in places where they should be able to leave the region than on the sides that are bounded with walls or the entrance to the boss room. Thus leaving the first bounding region higher up transitions smoothly to unbounded camera movement before the harsh transition into the boss room.

Ok, finally after some more fiddling I think I got something that was fine. I wrote a bunch of custom code to manually set the velocity each frame and it was close, but I ended up deleting it. I finally found a suggestion to jack up the acceleration speed and that seems to have removed most of the floaty-ness, and I only have it enabled for when flying. Unfortunately this means you basically instantly accelerate to max velocity instead of taking about a half-second to get there which is noticeable but not detrimental (though it felt strange when walking, which is why I only enabled it when flying). Anyway, good enough for now. Now I have to figure out how to make enemies walk towards the player even if he's not on the ground.

Let me explain my game a little more, maybe that'll help. You fly a plane, you have air-to-ground missiles, you get a target over the radio, which you have to identify, lase and then fire the missile(s) at. Plane and bomb are only assets I'll make in 3ds max, I'll make the target and like a small settlement out of primitives in whatever editor I end up with.

UE. Blueprints are different than coding. I'd say once you understand them a bit (which is easy) you'll work faster than if you were coding, no need to worry about syntaxes, most errors you can generate are only in logic.

Also UE4 has built in flying game example.

As an UE4 user, honestly blueprints are not that different than coding. You are still coding, it's just a more streamlined experience since you don't worry about memory management and pointers, and also no specific "syntax" to learn, if you want a loop you just right click and write "for loop" and get a node for one, if you want a switch case statement you do the same, etc.

I'd definitely recommend it to beginners ,since they will actually learn "programming" without realizing it. And when they finally switch over to code it'll feel like their limiters were removed and they can do anything.

I know, what I meant by different is how Execution pins and nodes like sequence or branch not always correspond to what you would put in code. A little bit of both in my opinion, agdg will give you raw and honest feedback most of the time, sometimes if you are unlucky you will catch nodev's attention and your game will get shat on a lot, you will get confused at first, but after a while you'll learn to differentiate real negative feedback, from people just trying to fuck with your motivation.

What Art does is:

Thats why it's so important.

Cubes and Boxes don't look as cool as a dude running around. Adding a really trivial thing like motion blur or a dust kickup on landing adds a shitload of visual feedback which makes it really easy to assert what just happened.

I'm guilty of it too. Last demo day I disregarded a shitload of games that had very early art or had shitty art. I think visuals are just so ingrained into us that it's hard to play something where the visuals are weak.

You can play your game and know how it functions easily, but other people don't. They need the visuals to generate interest and intrigue.

Its why the biggest games iirc from Demo Day were Idol commander, Clarent and Frogs Life because they had good visuals.

Last thing for tonight. I implemented fall damage, and now the Feather Fall spell actually does something (negates fall damage). You take 0 damage for the first 5m, and 7 damage for every 1m after that. Jump currently launches you about 20m in the air.

Idea for a new jam: Secret Jam.
Basically the organizers gets the e-mail addresses of all the people that want to enter and the day the jam begins he sends a mail to each with a different theme for a game.
Alternatively, anons propose themes and the Jam host chooses one theme at random the day the Jam starts.

Just prevent objects from entering squares in which others intend to go. It looks like your objects all move independently even though it's turned based, so it shouldn't be too hard.

I made one of these for a demo I released on DD9. Each AI decision is a seperate turn on the queue carried out sequentially. Technically everyone moves immediately so there are no issues with two actors trying to move into the same space, but then when the event queue reaches an important event (player turn, enemy attack) it freezes until the movement animations complete. Thus it looks like everything is simultaneous when it really was sequential.

I just have to update the grid before everything moves. I thought it was doing that before, but I guess not.

I'm using gamemaker. I have a ds_grid (pretty much a 2D array) that flags each square coordinate as either EMPTY (0), PLAYER (1), WALL(2), or ENEMY(3). So all I do is check if the square I'm moving on is EMPTY. If not then it won't move.

The enemies move when the players move, but I have them added to a priority queue (ds_priority in gamemaker) and that allows me to make them move in order according to who's the fastest. If multiple objects have the same "speed" it sorts them from who was created first according to their instance id.

you could smash out regular content and release it immediately for free. could make wacky ideas that aren't commercially viable, wouldn't need to worry about polish, can release source code and all kinds of extras.. it would be pure dev, and you could interact with the fans directly
