I'm currently directing my own project. In the writing department, everything is fine. I have over 400k words of content to adapt, with the story still being unfinished. (Six story arcs, large cast.)

I've been making a ton of art direction errors along the way, but I think I've learned a lot in the last year. I have a 40 minute or so demo which is nearing the final stages of completion.

Why do amateur western VNs look so...amateurish?

Japanese works look like commercially distributed goods even if they're made in a basement by a single guy dedicating an hour a week to them.

On the other hand, you have dozens of western works that not only look like a fifth grader's computer class project, but they have the gall to open patreons and kickstarters, as if they deserved a single dime.

They want to be paid, FOR A FUCKING HOBBY
THEY WANT TO BE PAID
FOR SOMETHING PEOPLE DO FOR FREE
SINCE THE INTERNET EXISTS
And for something INFERIOR TO THE FREE OPTIONS

I'm baffled.
But disregard the money issue, I got carried away there.
I just can't understand why, in the western sphere, everyone will just shit out whatever they can, without the slightest writing or drawing ability, and expect to be praised (and sometimes they are, with blind fans complimenting art that looks objectively bad just because it caters to their fetish), while in the Japanese market even someone's first project will be ironed out until it's indistinguishable from a professional production.

Does the west lack shame?
Are we not insulting fledgling developers enough?
I think the western world would benefit a lot by telling beginners who are fucking garbage that they're, in fact, fucking garbage.

I'm not in the know with Japanese shit, do you have any that come to mind for this point? I'm certain Japan has a lot of garbage as well, I mean even a bunch of their very successful VNs have shit tier writing. I'd use Fate/Stay as an example of that.

They're paid to produce something subpar. People have been making amazing games FOR FREE since the internet exists, and these pathetic wastes of life want handouts for being mediocre at A HOBBY.

Not a VN, but Cave Story was made by one guy. As a hobby. And then he distributed it for free.
A western fucknugget would have asked for at least 600k on kickstarter for something like that, and then they would've taken a minimum of 4 years to deliver a half-functioning demo.

I agree that money shouldn't be given to anyone who has yet to released anything. Authors will say it's "To sustain themselves", but it's not like they have jobs to get to, and it's not like they're leaving their job to work on whatever project they're peddling.
It's just greed. And the amount of time they dedicate to the project won't change once you give them money.
Only thing it's going to do is make them lazier. A person works much faster and better if their thought is "If I don't make a good and succesful game before next year I'm going to be out in the streets", instead of "I better take as long as possible to half-ass this shit, or else people won't keep spending money on my patreon"
