The player is going to glide and dash a lot but I don't want to make the mech too futuristic(ZoE), which makes jet nozzles kind of required, so I figured I slap a jet-engine in there to make it look more functional.
Arms are going to have more details but this is basically the "naked" player-character. The player will be able to slap different types of armor on(light, med, heavy), like the ab-armor you see.

Reposting cockpit controls with a bunch of useless flickering/moving lights and external view monitor to let you know what’s going on with the robot (and to show the animations). Every button/lever is working except the blue one which will be used to raise the shield. I also need to add a few more levers and cranks. I’m thinking of making this “BOOST” switch that would let you make the next button you press “stronger” (move forward faster, punch harder, shoot faster, etc.).

You can always search for sprite sheet of games with similar movements in google.
Megaman for example have one leg extended and the other flexed for the impulse, but both are partially extended during the fall trying to get to the floor standing, and that looks a bit more natural.

I mean, if you downloaded Photoshop, you'd probably be inclined to change after using it for a while, I don't think the same thing can be said for the other way around (unless you're actually paying for Photoshop, in which case you probably would be more inclined to change.) Templates are better than generics.
No Gosling absurdity with awful design choices.
Tons and tons of libraries in all spectrums of dev.
Gosling fucked up trying to make his own C++ with it.
UE4 uses it if you ever want to try 3D dev.
As well as many open-source engines if you want to try your hand at that.

There's really no reason not to use C++ for gamedev.

I tried to tackle AI for the first time. I'm just trying to make the red boxes move randomly to an empty spot on the grid. are you only running the game when the player moves? because that's a bad way to set it up.

You should always be running the game loop, and when the player makes a move trigger all other entities to make their moves instead, this way you can have idle animations etc. and enemies will always reach their target tile since they aren't tied to the player moving.

Yesterday I added water damage when traversing water (though you technically just walk on the water plane, not swim). Today I added a skillcheck for the new swimming skill, and the spell check for the new water walk spell.

With water walk, you never take damage. With swimming skill, each piece of equipment adds to a weight based on its material, which is then reduced by your mastery in swimming (master == 5 plate armor pieces for free). Then, the percentage of your inventory that's filled is calculated, and reduced by 8% for each skill point in swimming. The final damage is EquipBurden + InventoryBurden / 6, plus an extra 5 if you don't have the swimming skill at all. So a knight with 5 pieces of plate armor and 80% inventory full will take 0 damage at lv10 master swimming, but without the swimming skill, he'd take 38. Damage occurs every in-game minute (2.5 seconds).

If capturing rows is a strategic advantage, be careful you don't end up in a situation where whoever captures the first row is always the winner, because 5 rows vs 3 rows is a huge advantage.

If you have adjacency bonuses for units, or effects that only work in certain locations like darkest dungeon, the row capture becomes useful.

Day 15 of trying to make video games

After repeatedly trying and failing to figure out a way to determine when the player was about to hit a leader, I accidentally discovered distance_to_object while beginning to name a variable "dist", and using my absolutely baby-tier understanding of the code, I've managed to make something that actually functions for the first time.

Sort of.

It does prevent the player from trading with the leader and dying at the same time they destroy it, but it also just makes the player invincible for no good reason if they happen to hit the magic sweet spot where they're the right distance away but aren't about to destroy it. It also keeps them invincible until they leave the screen, which may or may not be a good idea depending on how I want to do things later.

I also did some really basic GML tutorials and worked on artwork today (I discovered that the difference between my skills in replicating an image and my skills in drawing something from imagination is hilariously vast).

It's not much, but it's a fucking start.

Porting from PC to mobile in unity is easy, but if you code directly for your platform then you can't port as easily. The tradeoff is unity runs slower than if you code everything from scratch, which IS a concern on mobile (I'm making a shmup and I can handle about 200 bullets, while other games on android I've seen have 400+)

PC can emulate most behaviours on a phone but there are a shitton of design things that feel fine on PC but feel awful on phone. Not to mention your PC is going to run your game at 2000000 fps, but on phone you might be pulling 12. Plus certain bugs will only manifest on one platform or the other, and you need to test certain functionality (did you know if you release a game on google play it has to have achievements?) that only works on phone.

There are plenty of recommended books using real languages to teach you some decent technique and practice that you can carry over to GML, you know. You read one book on C because C is a small (yet powerful) language that is easy to cover the whole of, then you get a couple of design patterns books and an algorithms book, and you're pretty much in the top 1% of coders.

Doing something every day is great, and I took your approach to PHP (lol) 15 years ago, but it feels rather pathetic compared to where I really took off when I stopped being afraid of real books. Good luck in any case.

Not him, but in my opinion you should take a few CodeAcademy lessons on Javascript (you don't need to complete the program). The reason I say that is because the syntax and flow are largely the same in GML (the lack of classes, how you declare variables and whether they're public or private by default) and it will help put you into the programming mindset.

Then I'd suggest you follow along with Shaun Spalding's "Your First Game!" tutorial. He does a good job introducing the mechanics of GM:S and is good in my opinion at teaching GML too.

Love2D is a great and fun way to learn game development.
There's also a Love2D Android branch thats already quite advanced (the iOS and WP branches are not that good yet).
But if you use Love2D there is no handholding.
It will exactly do what you've told it to and not more.
Luckily Lua is easy to learn and quick to understand at the basics

A lot harder to convey jerky movement without hair.

you'd be really fucking surprised what comes up. I've had lots of really weird stuff I built or put together that I didn't keep, but then it came up another time out of the blue.

For example I used hashmaps to store data on positions, which taught me all about how to use hashmaps which are super useful.

Then 3 years later I built a game where you match tiles to make words, I had to iterate over a dictionary with 55000 words in it every time a player moved any tile, and I had to do this like 5-20 times in a row (since I have to check every column and row that was affected by the switch)

Implementing that the brute force way took over 2 seconds of runtime, after a shitload of attempts I realised I could use a hashmap style hashing function to compare strings rather than do a hard string to string check. Instead of taking 2 seconds, it took 2 frames.

I'm pretty proficient with UE4 blueprints, have a decent portfolio, even something I've sold (6 copies of.. but im proud)

So I've been working on redesigning the player info box UI. It's a lot easier to read the HP/PP/AP now. I'm also planning to use it when you hover over enemies.

I'm still not sure about the rest of it though. On the middle left it shows your level and XP (100 XP = level up). On the middle right it shows your attack and defense. On the bottom in the black bar it's meant to show any active buffs/debuffs (e.g. the platformer dude has a shield that lasts for 1 turn).

I don't really like how that stuff looks. The icons seem confusing and the layout looks messy (esp the black bar thing). The buffs look too much like stats too (the number next to them is meant to be how many turns they last).

Any ideas? I guess I could do it like Paper Mario and just show the buffs above the character's heads, but since the game is 3d-ish and lots of characters can be together that seems like it'll be messy.

So a week ago I had 4 spells. In the previous few days I added 2 more. Today I added an additional 13, bringing the total up to 19 spells currently. I have room for 4 more fire spells, 1 more air spell, and 4 more body spells.

For the 13 I added today, none of them currently have icons, half of them either don't do anything or add status effects which currently do nothing, and the 2 projectile spells are using the same projectile as the fireball. So there's a lot of art to catch up on. Tomorrow I will try to finish implementing the remaining spells and status effects, then spend the next day or two adding some bad art. All the tooltips, spell strengths, durations, spell descriptions (mana, target type, ...) and hooking everything up is all done, though.

It's made with unity, I wonder how it will perform on ue4 (the collision mesh generation is kind of slow with unity).
Almost all assets are free stuff I've found here and there (trees are from turbosquid), I just modify the texture when needed.

Just google higurashi download or umineko download. I found them on an eroge site ages ago, which is weird since they don't contain any H material.

I haven't seen the steam version, but judging from what they did to the ps3 of umineko, just download the version with the old "ugly" sprites.

Years ago I tried to work SDL 1 with openGL 2.0 and ended up with a hotmess that made me quit programming for a while. Now I am coming back with SDL 2 since it has hardware acceleration. Stamina/food is a nuisance to the player by definition.

If you want the player to feel good about it, give them buffs for the different kinds of food they have in their stomach, but make them slower if they eat too much.

Players like bonuses more than penalties, even if the numbers are the equivalent between the systems. A base of 100 with a bonus of 50 if you do something is better than a base of 150 with a penalty if you don't. Blizzard had to learn this lesson TWICE, in Diablo and WoW.

Whether a setting or a mechanic is a theme, a lot of generic and uninspired games will be submitted. Setting themes will encourage games that are reskins of well established games.

But mechanics themes will have a different kind of generic. They encourage the same shallow interpretations of mechanics. For any mechanic word (and you can't use an actual mechanic as a theme, you have to use a word that implies a mechanic), there is an obvious interpretation. Say the theme was "gravity". You'll get 50% of the following:

because those are the obvious interpretations of "gravity", the first step of lateral thinking. What we call really "creative" art is taking more lateral steps from the theme, but not all devs will take those steps.

It's a rigidbody with a custom built controller script that I built from the ground up. I did not take anything from the default Unity controllers, even though I first thought about editing the Unity controller and built on that, but it seemed easier to just make my own instead of trying to decipher what does what.

Well, normally the controlls are relative to the Camera, so when you press forward on your keyboard or forward on you Gamepad's Joystick you walk/turn straight ahead from the camera, when you walk left or right the character is exactly at an 90 degree angle to the camera.

When on a loop that obviously does not work because the character turns to the camera, then turns wackwards from the camera again while being turned upside down. I tried for a couple of days to get it right, in the end I decide to just switch to a different controlling sceme when on a loop, similar to tank controlls(like in Resident Evil 1) where the camera position doesnt influence the controlls, which means if you press forward your character just walks forward from its curent position. As you walk mostly forward in the loops anyway(as I put booster pads infront of the loops entrance that put the player into the right rotation and you only need to go forwards from there anyway) Maybe I should disable sideway movement on the loops all together as it is not really needed.

Character Controller component isn't just a default unity controller, it's the way of having a physicsless character controller without having to write all the collision stuff itself. It's easy to confuse with the default first/third person controllers though.
