Well, here's the class declaration. The constructor is only called once. Really, if I add that last float to the public members list, the game just freezes when I start it.

Moreover, if I add two more other variables to the list (three in total with the float), it will run again.

MinGW.

I have solved the issue in the mean time, thank you for the help anyway!

The problem was that I was using a totally different variable which was only declared, but not set to any value. I just had to set it to 0 right at the beginning, and now everything is working again. I still don't understand why this issue got triggered now, but it makes sense. It's my bad. I've got used to JS, and there this was not an issue.

It's not about depression but about this fucking place. Nobody is supportive and they're all a bunch of assholes so it's not like you're going to get any motivation from here.

The best thing to do is show your small progress to friends or places like tigsource and only come here to shill monday and shill your release. That's all agdg is good for.

True, but disagree that GL doesn't belong in the OP, we already did it for some games so it'd be wrong to do it for some but not for others. A Greenlight isn't about popularity, its a sign that a yesdev reached a milestone of progress, which is something to celebrate.

I don't understand what you mean by "making it". I know I won't earn a dime with it, since I don't have the artistic skills for a proper looking game, I simply don't have the time to work on a game with enough content which would worth others' money, and I don't want to look for gaps in the market which I could fill, and I don't want to pander to any fan base.

Game dev is my safe haven. I just enjoy it. That's it. If the algorithm is working at the end of the day, I'm happy, since I've done something. Game dev is just a set of problems which I enjoy solving. Some people do crosswords, I try to imagine a feature which I then try to implement. It's this simple.

If you want to "make it", then apply for an actual game dev job, or make demos and prototypes until you have something KickStarter-worthy.

because everywhere else is shit, and its true that anonymous communication does give good critique, its just that agdg doesn't do enough of it. Thats why its frustrating to see anon pat themselves on the back like we're somehow better than reddit because reddit is so full of smarmy fluff, but at least reddit bothers to jerk eachother off, here many games just get ignored

another reason is I dont want to have to learn a whole new culture of memes, my rare pepes are worthless outside of this environment

Ok... enemy is like siamese twins, but they weren't born that way. They are sewn together front to back (like carrying a backpack on your front) and chained at the neck. One is the bottom...tall and has thick thighs and ass, she is the mobility, and can hear but not see, she has no arms. The other is small yet busty, but has no legs, she is the arms, and can see but not hear. They communicate through shudders and screams... feeling the vibration through the chain to communicate. Together they act like one.

A little game play mechanic progress. So there's now a bar which shows how tired you are. You get tired from jumping and running. If you fill this bar, you lose one life. However you can collect flowers, and you can use them any time you want to heal yourself. I plan to have more power ups/usable items, but first I'll need to implement the obstacles which they could be used against (like enemies).

That's the intention. I think I'll go with it for now, and see how it works/plays with the other mechanics in the mix. If it's really not that fun I'll just have it as a usual fatigue feature, so you don't take damage, but if you fill it up, you won't be able to run for example until it goes down again. I'm crafting a huge ARG-styled game, inspired by seeing anons trying to solve the SOMA ARG and that shitty video hoax in /x/. The sort of thing with a lot of secrets, minigames, puzzles than a bunch of people can try to solve together, where maybe you're not good at one thing but you can help otherwise.

Do you think that everyone should be able to solve every puzzle (i.e. it's all clue collecting and logic) or some puzzles should require specific knowledge (e.g. referencing literature or music in clues, hiding stuff in files so that you need hex editors or other /g/ wizardry to uncover).

Thanks for any input.

Getting some serious Rayman 1/2 vibes. Got a tumblr/website?
>>
In my player's update() function, I check to see if he's pressing the mouse button, and if so, fire a bullet. How could I make it so that in some very special cases, he could only shoot one bullet, and then have to do something else before he could shoot again?
My first thought was a "oneBullet" boolean, but that seems extremely inefficient, since it's such a rare occasion. I guess I could make his update() function state based, and give him a oneBullet state, but I'm probably overthinking it.

Your engine, if it's a big bulky 3d one like unity, is probably running a million statements per game loop anyway. Do you really think your 1 extra is going to matter?

Yes, but remember this is video game based.
Which means, that, for example, let's say a clue is hidden after a minigame like flappy bird, where you have to score X points to unlock it.
I know there are people who can't even beat the first pipe in that game, so getting X points should be rather troublesome for them, but maybe easier for someone else.
That's how I think I can handle the "can't be done by yourself alone" part, but if you think it's not enough I'll consider specific knowledge-based challenges.

prepare for the lewd jam. Easy idea process: think of what makes your pee pee hard, and imagine a game that uses that. Even if it's a normal platformer or something with lewd characters, that's enough. Although a story based game of some sort would be cooler.

Top tier would be using that fetish as the center of the gameplay in an innovative way.

Gang Beasts is essentially bare-bones gameplay with cool physics and everyone eats it up though including me and my friends

So basically if he just threw in some kind of goal, coins, or made us shoot each other in that one stage, that's a full enough game to be fun.

I'm really just a normie nodev who eats up fun and shits out money though. Not a critic.

make a game like super squat simulator where you repeat-press buttons to thrust into the woman. Consensual Missionary Simulator.

Maybe something like pressing the up and down arrow keys back and forth as fast as possible to try for a high score.

Even better would be a "pleasure" meter on the side, so if you just go as fast as possible with no limits, you'll burst too soon. So you have to try not to go over the top but stay within the sweet spot without popping, but going too slow or stopping would make you go soft and you lose then too.

Rust is better in C++ than every way besides the library support (though the popular libraries have all been ported) and potential for micro-optimization by hand (macro-optimization by hand is the same, micro-optimization by compiler is debatable).

As an AGD there's really no reason to use C++ over Rust unless you shouldn't be bothering with a systems language in the first place (which is most of the time).

Your instruments are great for the most part, but personally I find the drums out of place. Personally I'd say do some kind of 8-bit drums, mix in some low static kicks and such, or maybe find a good bitcrushed drum pack; something like what you'd hear in the Scott Pilgrim game soundtrack or some of Anamanguchi's earlier stuff.

That's obviously true, because it's newer. It's also not much of an issue for gamedev because there's no reason to use a systems language in the first place if you're not writing a lot of stuff yourself. A lot of the useful libraries for enginedev (like SDL2) have been ported.

Well, it's not structs that are the problem, because they're very fundamental. You can implement the OOP you see in e.g. C++ with just structs and pointers.

You just need to get a bit more creative than saying "each item type is a struct type and item properties are fields and there's nothing else to it".

>How's the GL support though
No worse than any other language, OGL is just an API.

>Of the language
It's a very simple language and it uses LLVM for the "hard parts" of compiling. Most bugs are with the borrow checker not being clever enough for certain situations, not anything that can manifest at run time.
>ports of libraries
If you're worried about the wrappers, lots of libraries also expose the raw C API through FFI, usually autogenerated from the corresponding header.

>Newer language -> less people using it ->less experienced people out there to answer your questions or help you if you run into bugs -> less solutions to problems already out there

First of all, the compiler itself catches most issues. The point of the language is that there aren't any more nasty shoot-self-in-foot opportunities. >>150446431
Having actually tried Rust (starting back when ~ sigils were in the language) and up to 1.0, and having written software in Rust. Fuck it.

You spend more time fighting the borrow checker than writing useful code. This is reflected in the standard library with many ways to subvert the borrow checker without dropping down to unsafe{} code. For example, there are types (like Cell) that look immutable but are actually mutable - they break the typical guarantees that the borrow checker offers. Then there are magical things like phantom types that let you simulate the existence of a field to enforce type checking at compile time. Why are there so many tricks for subverting the borrow checker when it's supposed to force you to write correct code in the first place?

For game development in particular, you need to do a lot of inherently unsafe things when writing low level code. OpenGL for example has tons of global state, something Rust does not let you model very well. Just look at the OpenGL wrappers that end up simulating the entirety of OpenGL's state themselves. Either you use these wrappers or you write a bunch of code wrapped in unsafe{} which is definitely not idiomatic. You might as well use C or C++ at that point.

Why don't you stop shilling for rust until you have a game to back it with.

>You spend more time fighting the borrow checker than writing useful code.
Probably because your notion of "useful code" is "hacky code" and you're too stubborn to learn how to work with Rust.
>This is reflected in the standard library with many ways to subvert the borrow checker without dropping down to unsafe{} code.
https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/choosing-your-guarantees.html
Unique ownership is what you want MOST of the time, and the borrow checker reflects that. When you don't want it, there are different approaches.
>For example, there are types (like Cell) that look immutable but are actually mutable
This is one of the things I hate about Rust. They say "immutable" and "mutable" when they really mean "shared" and "unique". Shared is always safely readable, and unique is always safely readable and writable. There are certain things that are shared and also safely writable (like Cell, under certain circumstances).

If you want to make it in the indie crowd, you need to be a jack-of-all-trades (master of none, don't worry about it) to start. The other option is to just focus on your one skill for nothing, post 3d art shit on the internet, and hope that someone who has something under his belt reaches out to you for help with his project. That's not very reliable and you're not getting equal partnership, you're getting contracted to pump out assets and then dumped until someone else is in need. If you want to get recognized, be the one with something under your belt, no matter what your specialties are.

The biggest skill for game dev is google. This applies to code most of all, which I suspect you are most afraid of since you do (3d) art. If you can avoid intimidation and do research, you will go far. So learn the skills you are lacking to a far enough extend to be independent and get shit done. Only then will anyone competent pay you any mind for collab. Otherwise, you will be stuck with worthless shits who want a cut for free and run off when you present them with real work.

Sure i can point at some super type instance from the struct and climb up and down the hierarchy but to what End if the alternative is like a couple oft code redundancies which dont cause any trouble?

The Problem already starts within the data tables and with the lack oft proper foreign key relations, which i originally faked but turned out to be unnecessary for what i'm doing (except in a single case).

Also polymorphism becomes a massive bitch when you start doing the OOP approach since logic in UE (given that you are not going with a blank c++ project) is contained within actors of a scene.
So unless i extend the API every actor that parses this struct hierarchy has to carry a parsing actor or retrieve it from some centralized instance.

And we havent even talked about type checks and how that potentially fucks extensibility.

Doesnt really seem worth it to me. Loads of potential bug sources too.

>>150454879
It's a combination of two words that programmers attribute special meaning to. It means don't stuff your fucking input code into your keystroke handler. Make "agnostic" action functions that could hypothetically be called in response to any type of input, and then call them from your keyboard input handler, and call them from your joystick input handler, et cetera. Makes changes easier, for example if you ever supported controlling two different characters, or if you add a new input method.

thats essentially how I have it setup now, slightly different maybe. I have a section of code for the tools where it has one input check, then within that checks what tool is held and does what that tool does. same deal with moves, some are a combination of key presses tho and they get more nested. I don't have separate scripts for each thing because sometimes I need it to exit the step event while doing one of the actions, and if you exit in a script, it just exits the script.

Remember that half-assed is okay when you only need half an ass. Pay attention to how much ass you need. There is this whole spectrum, from full-ass to titrating that ass one drop at a time. Programmers naturally operate at a high-ass level, though unfortunately often not high enough. If I go out of my way to explain the 1 life, randomly generated level mechanics in a story way, would it just be annoying since everybody is already familiar with these mechanics?

Like if the story is that the final boss destroys the world and reverses time because he wants to create a perfect world if the hero never defeats him. Would that just make people roll their eyes and say 'yea it's a rogue-lite I get it'. I mean in games like BoI it is never explained and I don't think it needs to, but I thought it might be neat to make all most of the mechanics relevant to the story.
Games like Rogue Legacy do it by saying every new life is the child of the character who died last time. Which I really like but idk.

Maybe I should just make it a bit less heavy handed, and make it like, when you die, it goes to a stats menu showing your scores, with the earth spinning in the background, you hit "new game", and the earth explodes and transitions to the first level.

Mixel - mixed-resolution pixels. Games like Terraria or Half-Second Hero put some art at 100% size and other art at 2 or 300% size and you can see how upscaled it looks, the contrast generally isn't pleasing. This style was actually popularised by the SNES and games that used Mode-7 to stretch and distort graphics.

Rixel - rotated pixels. Take a sprite and rotate it 25 degrees - if it's a bitmap it'll be a pixellated mess; if it's vectorised then the pixels will also be rotated and it'll be a Flash/Newgrounds mess. Also popularised by the SNES with rotating sprites.

One artist in a year is at least $25k
One programmer in a year is at least $30k

Yacht Club Games has 5 employees. They Kickstarted Shovel Knight in March 2013, after having already done a vertical slice, so let's assume that took them 6 months to prepare (September 2012.) The game officially released in June 2014, so that's 21 months of development, or a little under 2 years.

Assuming they paid themselves $25k each, which is absolutely unfathomable in Los Angeles, that's a total of $125k per year for the whole company. Two years of development is $250k.

Do you really think your measly 120k/year job can support a team like that? I hope you have at least 300 grand in savings.

It's really the other way around. The majority of stuff is scaled up but there are minor things that give the illusion of a smaller resolution away.

>if it's a bitmap it'll be a pixellated mess; if it's vectorised then the pixels will also be rotated and it'll be a Flash/Newgrounds mess.
The former is not rixels (although it still looks horrible); the latter is rixels.

Let's be real though. If you're making pixelshit you either:
1. Suck at art
2. Don't want to spend time on art
3. Both

Your game is going to look awful anyway, no point in doing extra work just to do things the "proper" way.

I actually think about that at the start of the project after getting the basic idea and concepts and see how hard to make it would be, for example I was thinking about making a beat em up as my first serious game, but I noticed how hard it is to get all that isometric stuff to work, and how little information there is about how to do or learn these things.

>What would go in the acceleration function, if I just wanted to move an object forward? Just some basic physics formula that finds acceleration given speed, position, direction, etc.?
Usually acceleration would depend on forces or just input, not any of that stuff (except direction with tank controls, speed with air resistance, etc.)
>Going along with that, does that mean that every object that behaves differently needs a different version of that function?
More or less, yes, if you want every bit of the logic integrated with RK4.
>In the integrate function, why does he multiply by (1/6)?
It's part of RK4.
>The dt value is supposed to be fixed, right? When do you use variable deltaTime?
Could be either, there are pros and cons of both. Separate concern.

I am in Unity and having issues with multiple layered transparent objects flickering from front to back. Mainly when using multiple decals over top of each other, particles or planes that have transparent materials on them.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Weapon assembly is started! Next I have to write some more rules for item placement and rotation. Right now it just requires you to place the grip, which functions as the origin point for all other parts, and then the body piece, which can only attach to a grip, and other body pieces. The fun is just beginning!

That's Z-fighting. There are many solutions, including:
>higher precision depth buffer
>higher depth separation between decals/particles
>disable depth test, draw from back to front
The first only goes so far, the second is not necessarily doable, and the third is sometimes too expensive. Pick your poison (for the decals, the 3rd is good because the order is static).

You don't really have a proper inventory; you have 4 max slots for guns, which can hold any size weapon, and then your parts list, which I suppose is a limited inventory that holds <x> amount of parts. Haven't decided what the max will be.

The crafting grid here is just for building. Whatever you build on it is stored in one gun slot.

Art advice: Be aware of competing contrast. Your background is really high contrast and moving in a way which emphasizes that contrast. The character and manta things, on the other hand, are relatively low contrast. You don't want that. You want the player's attention to be on the main character and the action.
