no actual dev would willingly say "fuck older pcs" when developing something designed to run ok on underpowered hardware, aka, fucking 2d platformers.

even in general, any programming major would fucking flog you for implying that competent programming relies on superior processing power to cover up for inefficient coding.

i know some devs who work in workaround for d3d deficiency, because it's THEIR job to make sure that their software runs on older machines.

Implemented a new AI system I'm pretty happy with for implementing multi-entity AI (cooperation). It's a huge improvement over using behavior trees.

So I decided to implement an action queue type of system that works well. Actions have start, update and finish functions. Start runs once when the action starts, Update runs every frame and Finish once when the action is finished. On top of that I have the concept of Sequences and Parallels.

Sequences will execute actions in Sequence. So if I say,

Sequence(chaseAttacker, pressAttack('Punch')),

then it will execute chaseAttacker until it is finished and then once it's finished it will execute pressAttack. In this example chaseAttacker is finished once the enemy gets close to the player, so this means the enemy will only punch when close enough to the player, which is the behavior I wanted.

Parallels will execute all its actions at the same time, so if I say,

Parallel(
Sequence(isHit, holdAttack('Block')),
Sequence(chaseAttacker, pressAttack('Punch'))
)

This will execute both sequences at the same time all frames, which means that on top of chasing the player around and trying to punch him, the enemy is constantly checking to see if it's been hit, and if it has then it will block for a while.

Another thing possible with this system is adding Decorators on top of those constructs. For instance, if I create my action queues with only those commands I gave in the examples, then they will be executed once and the enemy won't do anything afterwards. But I can create a Repeat decorator and make those actions be repeated forever, like Repeat(Sequence(chaseAttacker, pressAttack('Punch'))).

Most importantly I can just say action_queue:add(SomeAction) anywhere in my code and give the entity some command to perform, which makes it super easy compared to behavior trees to make entities follow orders and consequently to create multi-entity behaviors.

Really wish we had more time to work on this and polish it. We scoped down a LOT because our real lives demanded it, so we couldn't do all we wanted.

In any case, we did our best! I hope you guys enjoy it.

It's very similar but it isn't. The implementation is much simpler because Actions, Sequences, Parallels, etc have more complicated logic in BTs than what I'm doing right now. I realized I didn't need that extra logic and that it made things more complicated when I wanted to expand upon the system.

Googling "easy flash sound maker" returns a few sound generators. Bash the "random" button in any one until you find a really nice sound.
If you feel like actually making music, I'd suggest OpenMPT or FruityLoops. Put some sounds from the random generator or use midi instruments. Don't forget to use more than one instrument and give it a good drum beat.
Alternatively, you could make silent games or ones that don't need good audio.
If you have a weakness, build around it.

The guys rabbit isn't a real human, and I am willing to concede that a human with those EXACT proportions is likely outside the scope of whats real, however, I will still challenge you on the idea that it is outrageous for a person to have thigh measurements as large or slightly larger than their torso, sans bust.

They look alright in isolation but in-game you can see that the details are noticeably finer than everything else on-screen. Your geometry is ultra-blocky and untextured, your characters are made from solid blobs of color, and then the coins have all these tiny little lines and shapes etched into them.

preliminary migration.webm
3MB, 1752x1040px
Progress:
Finally managed to implement the migration simulacra. Phew!

The white-grey circles represent desirability of the star. The bigger it is compared to others, the more people will want to migrate there.

General vision of the system was to make the population migrate from smaller circles into bigger circles.

In the WebM, the top right star is the only inhabited star. Its base desirability is average. But since it has 1000 billion people living there, its effective desirability is almost 0.

I like how this system naturally replicates the "colonial America" style colonization of stars.

Btw, natural pop growth in the WebM is turned off and migration rates are a bit exxagerated and one frame equals one day.

If it works in Linux it is trivial to make it work with pretty much every other platform, unlike Windows.
It's very Platform Independent.
x11 Means I can run extremely expensive licensing software natively on my pc over sftp.
It supports pretty much all hardware, way way more than Windows.
Cheap on resources.
Centralised Application Installation (apt-get).
Transparency - it's not a black-box like windows.
Bash.

It has a steeper learning curve but if you're doing software development it should be trivial to learn. And once you master it it is much more powerful than windows. The only reason I can think of as to why Windows is so popular is because it comes pre-installed on all computers and pretty much 99% of computer users never ever want to have to install their own OS.

Looking really nice.

Is your game going to be arcadey or will it have a story and levels and such? The HUD really lends itself toward the former but I think your game could do really well with stages like Metal Slug.

Each trap block takes priority over the one before it, and an explicit listen block (ie. temporary traps) has the highest priority. If you assign a trap to a pattern that's already assigned, it just gets overwritten.

Inside any type of block, the first match wins

ok? Great argument.

>linux has hardware support
Linux runs on just about any hardware you can name, from mobile phones to supercomputers. It dominates on all platforms except the desktop computer. The open source nature of the kernel and software means it can be ported to another architecture by a third party if the existing developers see no need. The end user doesn't need to care about the underlying hardware.

>walled gardens are good so long as all packages are approved by comrade stallman
You can add other repositories if you know how to open the terminal and type on a keyboard.

programs are not supposed to add themselves to documents but do so anyway not windows fault, appdata is the user specific folder, and program files the system specific folder, allowing arbitrary programs and libraries to be correctly separated from other programs and libraries across a multiuser environment

public bool getset is used
if (object.Stop)
object.Stop = false;

public bool is used
if (object.Stop)
object.Stop = false;

what's the difference? the caller doesn't give a shit if it's getset or not, if you need to make object.Stop = false; result in Stop = true; then you just add a setter.

Changing the behaviour of a property isn't necessarily API breaking. Changing a field to a property is a breaking change due to reflection.

Since there's no performance difference, nor is a trivial property much more typing than a field, why wouldn't you use a property?

is it unethical to simulate a universe which can spawn intelligent life? if you've created such a simulation by chance, is it ethical to shut it down? do we have an obligation to communicate the truth to the inhabitants of such a universe? as the creators of such a simulation, do we have an obligation to extend aid to the inhabitants of such a simulation should the inhabitants request it? is it ethical for us to study such a simulation even though we'd wish to not be studied were we to learn that we ourselves inhabit such a simulation?

Shutting it down? Depends on your inhabitants' degree of free will and intelligence, I think. If they have achieved sapience then pulling the plug is probably unethical. If they're only sentient, it depends on whether the simulation is accomplishing anything (we allow animals to suffer so human lives can be improved, so why not simulated creatures too). If you can't tell, don't turn it off.

Yeah no one gives a fuck for a SHMUP, but it's kind of a required skill for a VN or a lot of character driven games (stuff like Bayonetta or Nier).

At any rate, maybe I didn't clarify, but that's part of the issue here for sure: many projects don't need writers as they're designed. We don't bring a lot to the table for many types of games, and something like Nier would still be a complete game--if decidedly lackluster by comparison--without it's writing.
