The Maker is the boss of the Seneschal/god (ie, you, god)

You're the Senechal/god. Your job is to sit on your throne and oversee the world and create and destroy life in a good manner.

You send out a dragon to find an Arisen when you get tired of doing this. This will probably be after 100 years or so.

Your first new dragon will be one that you made all by yourself. Afterwards, new dragons are failed Arisens.

the Duke killed his pawn for the same reason you do if you choose to sacrifice your love and become duke

The maker is the maker, he makes things then pisses off leaving the world behind. The Senechal is in charge in his absence.

The Senechal creates the Dragon to find the next Arisen, which begins the cycle anew. Since you killed the Dragon and Senechal and becomes the next Senechal, you create the next Dragon.

Pawns cannot be killed, only sent to the rift. We don't know if Duke killed his pawn, or just barred them from the castle.

Go read up on the wiki for who's Death and Daimon.

On console you can search by user name but Steam version doesn't let you. The best you can do it narrow the search by class and gender, then keep looking over and over.

There aren't that many male pawns so you might be able to find those easier. If you really want to hire one in particular try a friend request.

I love the lore/backstory of this game, it isn't entirely told to you outright, but it's complete and you don't need a fucking excavation team and you don't need to head cannonize everything to make the pieces fit together like soulsborne. Don't get me wrong, that's cool too, but in a different sort of lorey way.

So I entered the penultimate area in BBI on my way to Daimon Mk.II. A Wyvern flew towards me then Noped into the ceiling. I then encountered some Living Armor and at the exact same time the BBI Dragon encounter music started. Now I am trying to fight the living armors on the stairs while there is an infinite chain of spells being cast at me from basically nowhere and the Living Armor is never not facing me.

I shouldn't have laughed when the ThunderWyvern noped into the cieling.

The exact nature of the maker is never really made clear. Some people theorize that the Seneschal--Savan[/spoiler] in your first run (followed by your Arisen)--is the maker, but the name and nature of the Seneschal's task sort of suggest that he may only be a ward. Either way, presumably the maker is some manner of god in a monotheistic pantheon. What his role is beyond what is generally assumed about such gods is never really made clear, though it's fairly certain that the people of the faith, at least, believe he's the creator of the world.

The Seneschal's role seems to be one of preservation. All worlds are trapped in a cycle, and the Seneschal's job is to make sure that his world, at least, remains in that cycle in order to keep it from falling apart--as we begin to see happen once the dragon is slain. It's heavily implied that the world is to some extent a product of either the Seneschal's or the Maker's will (assuming they're separate entities), and that the will of the Seneschal is required to maintain it. This process is draining, at the very least emotionally, due perhaps to the nature of the cycle or the nature of how the world interacts with the will of the Seneschal, so replacements are necessary. This is in itself part of the cycle, and so the Seneschal uses dragons to seek out candidates to replace him.

Anyway, as for the time he must wait, this is entirely unclear. All we're told is that countless lifetimes have come to pass between Savan's encounter with his dragon, and your Arisen's adventure. It's sort of implied if you complete an NG+ in offline mode that the Seneschal can send a new dragon out nearly immediately, but this is based very tenuously on the idea that your pawn who has become human is the same Arisen who will come to defeat you, for which there's no real evidence--in fact, in many ways it doesn't really make sense. The nods in NG+ may simply be there to reinforce the idea of the cycle.

There is no evidence to suggest where the new dragon comes from. It's possible there are multiple concurrent dragons--one of the merchants in Gran Soren's markets who comes from the mainland says "the dragon" attacked near where he lived at the time. It's quite possible this was some other dragonkin, but judging by his age--he doesn't look any older than 40 tops--this must have been after the Duke's encounter with Grigori. Since Grigori, when he explains the cycle somewhat, speaks as though the Duke were the last Arisen, it seems likely that if the dragon the merchant speaks of was a true dragon, then there could be more than one. As to whether there's a system to replenish the ranks of dragons is unclear.

What happened to Edmun's pawn is also never made clear. Whatever happened to him during his trip to the dragon, and during his decision, he clearly came to hate pawns for some reason--there's really no other reason for him to have barred all of them from the castle. It's unlikely that he found some way to permanently kill his pawn, though some have theorized that Lenore WAS his pawn.

As you accept missions from the notice board on Bitterblack Isle, you'll find some of them were written by a previous arisen who traveled through the isle before your arisen arrived. Reading the descriptions for these quests will gradually explain Death's identity.

Daimon's identity and motivations will likewise be explored as you travel through Bitterblack, though suffice to say the reason for his anger is that a choice he was forced to make came at a great personal cost no matter the outcome.

Your successor in NG+ is a combat expert and probably have slaughtered Daimon on that beach in Cassardis. Is this significant or just an artifact of the NG+ gameplay mechanic?

Iola from Cassardis is a really good source of information.
She's the one who tells you that the Duke should be her age, and that she's wondering how someone so old can hold the duchy.
Then she tells you about dragon legends, how some Dragons just "come and go" or some "cleave through the country destroying everything."
The Dragon is also said to roost somewhere before going on a rampage through the country, probably to gather strenght.

You could theorize that Dragon that come and go are the ones that don't find their Arisen or whose Arisen's choose the Duke's way.
Dragon that rampages through the continent are the one whose Arisen's died in their duel or before, meaning the Dragon needs to find another one and motivate the population to try to stop him.

Honestly I had more luck climbing than trying to shoot him out of it as a ranger. When he starts to do the vortex attack, liquid vim and grab on his legs, climb to his chest, pop 4 x conqueror's periapts and hundred/thousand kiss away. He should be dead before he can recover from the vortex attack.

I just did a quick playthrough of the game and ended up with Fournival as the beloved. How did this happen? I did not speak to anyone after Mercedes in Pride before a Fall and killing the dragon. Does it count if you run past them and they greet you?

So my Arisen is a level 32 Assassin and my Pawn is a level 32 Sorcerer.

I realize I want some balanced stats so I can do the good ol' switcheroo between vocations and play what I feel like playing currently. However I don't want to go full paranoia and level 5 levels as Warrior then 10 levels as Sorcerer then dance the hokey pokey while leveling 17.23 levels as Ranger etc. I feel that kind of defeats the purpose of an "I'll play whatever I want to play" build.

How do I salvage this? Switch to Sorcerer for a while to get Magick Attack and Defense?
Then some Warrior/Fighter for HP and Defense?

My first opening of the second phase Daimon chests resulted in 3x Perfect Rift Crystal and the Moonbeam Gem. My second go around got me a pair of Framae Blades once the uncursing commenced.

I got those blades goldforged and just went to go visit the Ur for the first time in ages, Used 8 of each Conquerers and Demons Periapts over the course of the fight and broke the damage cap.

Left one has better offensive stats and gives good knockdown/stagger resist but the sword clips like hell in the cape.

Today I remembered that my Strider's Brain Splitter ring had another effect to buff Stepping/Leaping Stone, and wondered what that skill actually did. So I bought it and equipped it and now I'm kicking my enemies into the air then turning into a buzzsaw. How did I not know about this skill until now?

There's something pretty satisfying in imagining how Barroch or Caxton use materials to enhances weapons.

Would be pretty nice to know how Barroch use Moonshimmer pelts and Thunderwyverns Horns to make a weapon more powerful. Reduce them to paste and use their magical properties to enchant it ?

Also using bloodred crystals made with the blood of your own pawn to enhance stuff is pretty metal.

You have to get out of the Utilitarian/Scather mindset friend.
Pioneer lets her explore on her own, open chest and retrieve materials. It also give her a bigger leash so that she won't despawn after aggroing many mobs.
Mitigator is to counter Scather's propency to scale the big monster the first time they sea them.

Shield Drums helped aggro Sirens. It may not work against an Eliminator or an enraged Elder Ogre but then nothing can realiably aggro them.

She has 3star in almost every monster except the rarest. I must admit that I didn't watched her enought to see if she perfect block reliably but I have seen her tank through a High Frigor from a Frostwyrm and through Daimon's second form claw attack thanks to Divine Defense. In the latter case she gets the Guard Break animation but as there is no further attack she is safe from retaliation.

Impact is 100% not working reliably for me. Arc of Obliteration is a guaranteed Knockdown on death. I'd rather keep Grit on my pawn so that she's always active in combat than put an Augment I'm not sure even works in the first place.

Acuity is a magick damage book that will replace Eminence. She's using a Goldforged Ascalon, so the magick damage boost would help with the total damage.

Pioneer never let me down as an inclination except in the rare case my pawn was mining Rubicite at the opposite side of the room when a Cursed Dragon appeared.

I can always try out Utilitarian as primary for a while, or Utilitarian/Pioneer,.

Literally just play want you want. I mostly did that my first playthrough and got through BBI 2.0 once with every vocation without using stat buff items and mostly using perma-enchanted weapons because I didn't know better back then.

If you're afraid of going full OCD autismo, avoid the wiki page in stat growths, but otherwise, you can always check there if you feel like one of your stats is lagging behind. Really the only way I can think of to completely and utterly fuck yourself for a switch build is if you spend most of your 11-100 levels as warrior and/or mage, because they both have absolutely shit stamina growth, and some vocations need a lot of stamina. Even that can be partially overcome with items like Liquid Vim, though.

Her knocking down with Dragon's Maw/PB is much more noticeable than a 2s faster recovery time, unless you're playing on Normal where everything staggers pretty easily with Lv 3 weps. If not Impact, then Proficiency will let her use more skills, or Arm-Strength to be able to disable monsters with shake-off animations for longer

Don't use split damage weapons please, they're terrible in BBI

Melee pawns should never stray anywhere, Rangers are acceptable because they can snipe effectively, MAYBE Sorcs, but not melee

This game has been out for a long time, there's some tried and true methodology, especially for melee pawns, which are much easier to train than ranged/support

To be honest there isn't a huge amount of difference between the various versions, though obviously a halfway decent PC rig will get better performance than either console (plus ENBs if you like those). The PC version does have more active community, meaning your pawn will get more hires, which is helpful but not critical. I don't play on hard mode and I don't use Dragon's Maw for my pawn. Last time I used it she would spam it constantly and, while nice, left her too many time out of breath.

I'm using a split damage weapon because I like Ascalon's look. I know they are not optimal, I know it's no Devilsbane, but then again my objective is not to make the most meta and optimal pawn possible. I want to make my pawn a solid tanky fighter that can handle an ennemy magic attacks and gets in their face.

Even if she strays, one Blitz Strike and she's on the ennemy again. She has been able to keep up with the Ur-Dragon wild repositioning thanks to it and not following me all the time.

The game has been out for a long time, true, and I've been playing it for a long while, PS3 and PC. That's why I'm looking to add a little variety to my pawn training, not get another cookie cutter.

How effective is hunter bolt against death?

Is Challenger/scather a good inclination setup for a ranger? They won't cancel each other out and make her braindead, will they?

It helped a lot that I was a sorcerer with Gicel. Even without high gicel, synced casting, or the quick casting augment, you can sprint around and hide behind rocks to stay out of its warpath. It took a long time, but it ended up being pretty doable.

If I'd planned ahead I'd have brought some throwblasts, but I did it on a whim.

They're not hard to find without the tears and just killing Ur gets you all you need to finish.

Something to keep in mind is that despite their size, ogres are extremely durable, even more so than Cyclopes. This is exacerbated by their lack of a weak point.

Torpor is very useful, and I think blinding and poison work well too.

The best trick for ogres it to always pick up skulls around caves. If you manage to hit one with three skulls he'll be cursed, cutting his attack stat massively.

Boss monsters can be defeated at very low levels, but you need to know their moves and their tells, and it helps to bring along the right items--throwblasts, for instance, are a huge help for taking things on at low level.

You should ignore the guide and just play the game naturally. You'll likely miss a bunch of sidequests, and you may need to just run away several times, but you'll get a feel for combat, how your skills work, what pawn teams work for you, how to deal with boss monsters, etc., etc. Eventually it'll all seem really easy, even if you aren't overleveled.

And if you do finish all the sidequests, you'll probably end up massively overleveled for the "final" boss. I leveled up like six times just doing escort quests recently (but I'm on my third Arisen so whatever).

I wonder if it would be possible to make a viable "gimmicky" Sorcerer.

For exemple, an Earth/Volcano Sorcerer that would take Seism, Comestion, Bolide, Lassitude, Voidspell and one pact (Possibly Fire Pact.)
Or maybe a Storm Sorcerer ? One that would take Maelstrom, Fulmination, Brontide, Blearing, Voidpsell and Thunder or Dark pact ?

Actually it's just shitty for pawns because the AI doesn't know how to use it. It's a little helpful for your arisen--it gives you a decent chance of killing critter-type enemies that launch themselves at you--bats, snakes, leapworms, that sort of thing. It won't block all of them, but it'll help.

Strider has Cloudfall Volley which Rangers don't. There's some abilities that earlier classes have which later ones don't.

How bros? The quests are shit tier, the story is shit tier for 3/4s of the game and even the world is pretty bland and generic for the most part.

It's not all that important, except for the most powerful enemies in the game where it helps to make the fights less drawn out.

The only stat that I would consider generally important to improve is stamina, which means you got to play ranger for a few levels because they have the best stamina gains in the game.

The basic vocations are all useful for their own things. A lot of people will keep a fighter for a dedicated tank pawn or to Dragons Maw everything.
Strider has access to Helm/Skull/Brain Splitter, which does outrageous damage when used while jumping with the Eminience Augment.
Mage is kind of meh outside of early/mid game because they don't get access to the top tier of spells, their staves aren't as powerful, and Anodyne is vastly outperformed by consumable items, especially spring water. They do have unique access to Grapnel though, which can keep the Boss of BBI completely incapable of moving, though pawns don't use it that well.

It still baffles me how combat is such a hard thing for RPG makers to master. Souls games handled it well (still inferior to DD imo) and so did DD but they dropped the ball in other areas. If an RPG can release with DD/Souls tier combat and Planescape Torment tier writing/dialogue then that game will be the best RPG of all time.

What's surprising to me is that the combat isn't even that complex. If anything it's almost as simple as Musou games' combat. What makes it really addicting to me is optimizing your methods of taking down big boss monsters (perfectly brainsplitting an unarmored Gorecyclops' head is fucking satisfying). Oh and the fact that the game mechanics aren't that intrusive either.

The world becomes pretty interesting once you finish the game.

The localization is also god-tier, as is the voice direction, and the VAs really put some effort into the delivery. I didn't pay much attention to it on my first playthrough, but since then I've really come to adore the characters, some of whom aren't as shallow as they seem.

DD as a whole is deceptively well done, it just doesn't beat you over the head with cutscenes and exposition and handholding. It's similar to Souls in that regard, but without the complete clusterfuck of lies and ambiguity.

You go beat up big demon guy who was an arisen given a choice too soulbreaking to make, then the island wakes up. You fight your back to where you fought big demon guy who is back but now has different dialogue, kill him again, but now something else takes over the body and your pawns can't stop shitting themselves. You kill it and it keeps coming back for more while Barroch ponders just what the hell you woke up.

There's a lot of small things that mesh well together and explain a things without needing hindsight to make sense of it

The whole revolt at Windbluff Fort is particularly well done; it's the main event of Mercede's drive to earn herself a reputation but there's a bunch of sidequests involving it that hint at the revolt long before it happens. I remember someone posted a good synopsis of everything in the game leading up to the revolt, wish I remembered it better.
