thanks
the webm shows a homing weapon pickup
it allows the player to deal a steady stream of damage while dodging the hazards
due to the fact that bullets automatically aim at nearest available target, it makes dealing with enemies attacking from distance tad more difficult; also the bullets are launched further away from the character, making close encounters more chaotic too

keep iterating. You can do a lot with GM. As long as you keep going at it. If you're really new, stick to something really simple. Work your way into more complicated stuff, becauyse that requires more time and focus.

Unless you're already used to working crazy hard, in which case, go nuts.

So I would like to implement a Logger for my game. One, ideally, which could write to an in-game dev console (which will double as a means for editing the game during runtime). But Loggers can write to a variety of places (the first that come to mind are the console, the in-game console, and files).

I've come up with an idea to create an interface for each type of Log and have a main Logger class use that to write its logs wherever the Log itself decides.

example code given: http://pastebin.com/nGDcfmcq

How does this sound? Viable?
I'm attempting to write my engine as loosely-coupled as possible, which is a hard exercise for me.

anyone know wat de fakking secret is to using GM's with()? I swear it's almost like it works or doesn't at random.

with(instance_create(x,y,explosionController))
{
passedtarget = other.id
}

For whatever reason I get an error saying the calling instance cannot be found/does not exist

default create event for the object

passedtarget = noone
if(!instance_exists(passedtarget))
target = allyCorvette
else
target = passedtarget

x = target.x
y = target.y

anyone know what it is im missing?

Hey, /agdg/, first timer here. I have an idea for a game pretty much fleshed out in my head and the only thing stopping me from working on it (besides motivation) is knowing what type of database to use. What type of database is good to use for video games? Ideally I want to have multiple tables each with potentially hundreds or thousands of records easily searchable/sortable but I also want it to be portable, i.e. I don't want anyone playing this game to have to install SQL Server or some shit. Do you guys have any suggestions?
>>

Lua is kind of databasey with all its tables

>>
>>150041018
You didn't have the manpower or the resources to make a game similar to NMS anyway
>>
>>150040942
Hundreds OR thousands doesn't require a real database. Hundreds OF thousands does. Chances are pretty good that you can just store the data on disk (maybe slap on some encryption if you feel like it), then load it all into memory when you start the game. If that's not good enough then SQLite is pretty much made for what you are asking for here, but in some cases it might be overkill. Depends on the data really.

I realize it shouldn't require a database just for the amount of data, but I would like to use one simply because I am very familiar with using databases and being able to read/write/search/sort as I am used to doing would greatly simplify the project.
>>
>>150041508
it doesn't look intimidating though.

Size isn't everything. A lot of the scariest enemies in games are actually small.

Quite honestly, this looks like it will be a really boring fight. Its one of the problems with big enemies, they are largely passive and stationary, which makes them uninteresing.
>>
>>150041205

Ah okay, I understand.If I would like to actually sell it for money I would have to do some changes, mostly changing colors on textures that should do it for most things. But as for now I planned to make it a free game and I dont think Sega goes after free games like Sonic fangames and satire games like "Sonic Dreams Collection"

Even though I have thought about ways making a bit of money from it, It's not really a viable option unless I change up a bunch of things and then joke would be lost mostly, so no real way of monetization.

True! The way I plan on having the fight work is more of an autoscroller battle, which involves the MC running until the Leviathan gets stuck and you end up attacking while its movement is hindered. So while you won't see the entire monster onscreen at the same time, you would end up seeing the whole creature.

I appreciate your input. Suggestions on how to make it more intimidating?

I think we can subvert the "slow colossus" trope by having the chase section be fast paced, and keep the player on their toes during the actual fight with environmental effects and maybe a beam attack that keeps you constantly repositioning. Arikado has already mentioned he really hates bosses that just spawn enemies, so we'll be avoiding that a much as possible.

>>150043165
Thanks! I'm also a huge SotC nerd as well as drawing inspiration from Berserk, you're gonna see plenty more big enemies in the future (animating is gonna kill me)

Well that depends entirely on what you're using

Have a central manager for this
>input handling
Your handler should turn actual devices into game input
Like your character shouldn't be checking if the keyboard key A was pressed, it should check for the jump button or move button. Your handler maps that to whatever keyboard or gamepad key the user changed to.

Micro-games will be back, just in the form of 'ultimate' skills you can charge up during combat (sort of like the Star Power moves in Paper Mario).

They'll be a lot more powerful too. Like, the Shooter's one will turn your mouse cursor into an aiming reticule that lets you freely shoot any enemy on the screen in realtime for a few seconds (like in a rail shooter).

Right now in the concept stages you take control of monster girls and try to trap unwilling men to take their semen.

Don't worry, first jam games always suck. My first jam game had literally no gameplay and I could probably remake it in an hour now.

I recommend getting it all together as soon as you can and spend the last few hours making sure it's working as intended and relatively bug free. (But you can still submit a buggy game and fix it up a bit after the jam finishes, no one minds)

it really has nothing to do with cartoony or not, it's that they're separate objects and the force on them is from the squash movement of the character object so naturally they should have far less force than the main object but they're squashing as if they're part of him.

Working on the giant punch crank. To punch you have to crank down the lever and release it to unleash the punch. This is just me forgetting to have the forward dash's speed decay.

You'll also have a button to trigger the integrated telescopic baseball bat mid punch to obliterate your enemy.

Just need to add animations, damage system (easier than it sounds), shield crank (the blue one will raise a bbq cover shield) and the guns. Also I need to work on the hud so it looks like the inside of ironman's helmet.

Fights will feel like goemon's great adventure giant robot fights but with more control.

>you are a government agent tasked with the study and containment of paranormal phenomena

>you are assigned cases to investigate.

>details include location, witness testimonies, photographs of objects or bodies found at the scene, etc. They don't directly give you the cause of the case but give you indirect hints as to what happened.

>gameplay consists of the player running around trying to piece together what happened for each case.

>you find and photograph evidence, interrogate witnesses, and discover clues as to what is behind the events all while trying not to get killed.

the player eventually find ways to contain the creatures they encounter

they could then view them in a gallery of sorts

which could also lead to a chapter where some or all of them break out and you have to escape the facility where they are kept. just like that one cabin in the woods scene.

If you've never programmed before, download Game Maker right now. If you have programmed, consider Unity, but GM is still the best for 2D imo.

If you're a good self learner, just use GM's manual while making a simple game like Pong or something. If you're not a good self learner, look up GM tutorials on Youtube.

Once you get the basics of GM (specifically GML syntax etc) then you can just like make game. Little by little you build something big. Post progress as you go.

Good luck.
>>
>>150037482
>>150046948

I'm really liking what you're doing here, but is there really a point to moving your character one step at a time during their movement phase, versus clicking or selecting the end position? I see that you can still move after attacking, at least the Contra man did, but that could still be possible with that kind of control scheme. That would get rid of any weirdness people could have over the 8-direction control scheme.

Either way, glad to hear minigames are back in ultimates.
>>
>>150066621
95% of games posted here are either Game Maker or Unity, with Game Maker being the most popular. Don't worry about any other engines.

GM in particular has had a lot of success with games like Risk of Rain, Hotline Miami, Nuclear Throne, Undertale, etc. and in-progress /agdg/ games like Sourcerobe, Dungeon Break, Clarent, Zero Quest, all the Frog games, etc. etc.

If you just want to start making a 2D game - go download GM.

I've considered mouse movement, but it just feels awkward and slow when you're navigating the world outside of combat. There are also real time elements in the game that require quick reflexes (e.g. cannons that shoot cannon balls outside of the normal turn system), which don't work too well with mouse movement.

Now that I've made the S key move down (instead of being the wait key) I think the controls are a lot easier to use. You can generally just use WASD and occasionally use one of the QEZC diagonal keys as needed.

Mouse movement is also a bit hard to implement - when I add more complicated terrain (e.g. a fire tile that hurts you when you walk on it) I'm not sure how I could make the mouse movement handle that - if you click next to an enemy on the other side of a fire tile, would it walk through the fire tile (hurting your character) or walk around the tile (potentially using up more action points that you might've needed)?

I'll see what people think after the next demo, but I've grown a bit attached to the controls...
>>
>>150067563

I think thats one of the fundamental problems with game dev.

You know the nuances and quirks of your game, so a lot of stuff isn't a big deal.

I think the S being down is a good change, I was clicking it instinctly during demo day and it was going wait. I totally get why you configured it that way, but I'm glad you changed it.
>>
>>150067563

Right, I forgot about the canons in the demo, even if that example doesn't seem like it NEEDS diagonal movement, I wasn't really thinking about how the rest of the game outside of battle used the same movement controls. Like for example, Fire Emblem or X-COM have ALL movement as turn based, but your game has free movement between fights, which is an important difference, and it might be jarring to switch movement styles in battle, so what you have now works fine.

In any case, making S key act as "down" is a great change, and that pretty much fixes everything anyway.

>>
>>150067957
Heh the game I'm playing right now (Underrail) does that shit horribly. Always wasting turns unnecessarily walking around AND walking into damaging tiles.

If your mouse moves ever so slightly while clicking, you'll often walk around an enemy instead of attacking them. The hitbox is so goddamn small.
>>
> Want just like make game
> Don't like Unity or >gamemaker
What do?
>>
>>150067957

I'm not the dev, but I think the problem is that choosing the end tile wouldn't let you make the decision to walk through a damage tile to get a better angle on the enemy, vs going around and using more of your movement. I haven't looked at Exile, but I don't see how that problem can be avoided.

>>150068169

Yeah, but Valkyria Chronicles has a ton of real-time elements during each turn. What I saw from the combat of Zero Quest in that video did not.

I've played Exile 1/2/3/Blades. It's one of my main inspirations. Here's a screenshot from when I first started making the game and was using Exile sprites as placeholders (although I'm still using the Ninja with slight modifications... I should probably redo that one).

Exile's keyboard movement works similar to my game's current movement (although it uses the numpad). Exile's mouse movement relies on the position of your mouse relative to the character, which I didn't think would work well with my game's tilted perspective. I could give it a shot though...

Does anyone know how to make a camera in unity snap to the same pixel units you specify when it moves? The camera moves in vector 3 which means it does so in a float which causes issues when it comes to moving the camera because things snapping to the pixel grid will jitter as they move.

I would just use another engine but I'm too used to using unity and accustomed. the camera movement is the only thing I need to fix anyway so I'd rather figure out how to round it somehow. I tried rounding the float to a double but it still had issues.

Because fuck downloading a game just to try out its movement system. It wouldn't even run on my system. I looked up a video, and it took the guy like half an hour to even start moving.

And in the end, all the mouse movement Exile uses is just that you move on the tile out of 8 that's closest to your mouse, when the problem was that clicking directly on a square to move to it would have issues when dealing with damaging terrain, not just turning your mouse into a glorified 8-directional pointer.

Does anyone else have a yearly return to /agdg/ during summer?
Basically every year looks like this for me:

>spring - fuck agdg, fucking cesspool
>summer - okay agdg might not be that bad, let's check back on them again

I do the same but it's not necessarily seasonal like that, I check it every few months for a couple of days.

I used to do that too but it stopped working when I got a decent job and the money became less significant. Ultimately you need to develop productive habits to reliably make content in an enjoyable manner.

Try playing chronicles: Runescape legends. The IP might be shit, but it is actually pretty good looking and has some fresh ideas for a card game.

If you don't know, you have two choices:

Use an existing engine and learn as much from it as you can, and then make your own.

Or

Just start making your own and improve the architecture iteratively. Read the book on Game Engine Architecture as you go

I know I've even assisted during one but I'm doing field surgery of WW1 and not aiming for 100% realistic stuff
>>
>>150079269
Not him, but I'm guessing whoever hired her fell for the gamer gurl meme. Maybe she had good references, or even fake ones.
I worked with a girl that had friends making papers praising her work as a teacher and recommending her for jobs, and she never worked with them, and never worked as a teacher before.

3500 in 3 months is 1166.67 per month.

That's below minimum wage in americuckland son.

Since he's not making any money right now, it's safe to assume he's living with parents so he has no rent to pay.
