I was makng a smash clone some time ago, but masking the lag in actual character collisions is a pain in the ass, so I decided to make all the attacks, ranged shooter-like attacks, since is way easier that way.

As with most game types, it needs to be really good in order to sell. Some game types can exploit the market for free sales though, such as let's play bait meme games and survival crafting shit.

That's pretty insightful of you.

Keyboard is only problematic for the quarter-circle obsessed type of input. Maybe don't make a garbage input scheme and your fighter will be fine on keyboard.

Forcing an input method onto your players is a good way to alienate part of your audience for no reason whatsoever. You can know what you will use, but it's a good idea to let others make the choice for themselves.

The fact that he has three fingers as well as such long claws makes that hand shape look weird.

I recommend using the standard "cartoon snap" animation, in which the character touches his thumb and pointer finger together and then quickly draws them apart, as though flicking a booger.

It has nothing to do with the input system, the style of game just simply doesn't work well with a keyboard. Just like how racing games suck on keyboards, but are still doable.

I'm trying to access some variables from a static class, I'm using this line of code to do so 'DreamController dreamController = DreamController.instance;', but the problem is that after I run the code I get an error saying 'Null reference exception: Object reference not set to an instance of an object'. why are you trying to use singletons and static classes? there are few to none reasons to do it in unity. i mean in my last game i only used a singleton to keep music playing between stages without stopping. just create a normal class and reference it. like so : you create a class (Nodev) make the shit you want to access public like "public static NodevMethod(){doshit};" and then in the other class you do
"Nodev _nodev" and to use the method you do _nodev.NodevMethod. Dont forget to attach both scripts to an object and manually link the nodevscript to the empty fild that will show up under the object on the inspector. if you didnt understand google "how to access variables and methods from another script in unity"

Yeah that looks like some old Singleton code I found a long time ago. Here's some better stuff I'm currently using:

Make that a class, then make your DreamController class have this header: "public class MenuSingleton : Singleton<MenuSingleton>".

Then you should be able to shove anything you want into that DreamController and access them from any other script using DreamController.instance.someVariable. But this means that you can only have one DreamController object. I assume this is what you wanted though?

I think I'll just leave the fancy iron-sights for other games down the line.

Not completely sure. I think real time would be more fun. You would have a basic map of wind directions, and maybe predictions of future weather. I don't know if the player should be able to directly control the ships, or if the player must plot the course and then AI does the rest.

I think being able to personally control ships would fit better for a game where you are actually sailing a ship. So that would need to be something separate.
There aren't any games where you have to actually control a sailboat yourself, positioning the sails and the hull so you go the direction you want. Maybe a racing sailboat game? Like Hydro Thunder, it can even be 3D, the wind vectors only need to be 2D still because you're sailing on flat water anyways so it wont make a difference.

Personally I stand in the position where I can say if you have a PC that can't play my 2D game perhaps you should be focusing on more enjoyable things.

But I think it's a realistic problem for GML people. And if i were forced at gunpoint into an environment like that I'd probably see where I find the experience still enjoyable. For a game like TF2 that's not an issue.

There's really no excuse though, peoples computers are mad strong these days. If you can't run your game passably on a phone (ignoring input issues) then you're a bad programmer.

"A week of practice" doesn't sound so bad.
But you also need:
1. Some okay tutorials or documentation(Blenders documents are generally horrible, but they occasionally do the job)
2. Some concept art to start making 3D of
3. A introduction to both extrude modeling and box modeling
4. Realize you are not suppose to touch the sculpt tools until your topology is acceptable
5. Cry a lot once you try to Rig & animation. Both are painful to do

Shit like UV unwrapping(literally creating bear skins or cardboard cut outs), texturing and Quad flow is things you do best as you improve.
Thats easy.
Rigging is okay, once you figure out how to do it. Rigging for IK setups is literally painful.
Animation is the hardest part.

It's a space thing. You have a mid ranged weapon.
They have mid range damage (same as player but with a wind up shot) with a cooldown (fire if the player gets in range than reload)
Some have contact damage figure i could give them a charge or leap type attack. Maybe have them face the player while he's in a certain range and than when he leaves go back to patrolling...

Just ignore it, its a meme here, the only things you really have to worry about are:

Stealing "complex" assets. A cube is not, a soundclip is.
Using other people's characters/names is dangerous, if an idiot in a hurry could think that your game was infact an official game in the characters franchise you can get sued to hell and back.

But for example. stealing an soundeffect, or a hundred, most likely won't get you into trouble, because you aren't stealing a brand, and in most cases they will lose money and public opinion by fucking over an indie dev by pursuing it.

See the VR-Studio ghibli thing for example, he stole a whole ton of characters but all Ghibli did was to force him to take it down.

The archer is a basic ranged unit. 2 panel attack range (vs. basic knights 1 panel) but has weaker attack and hp than standard knight but more movement speed.

If you're gonna sleep there get a pillow or your head will fucking hurt in the morning.

Never work with more than 3 people for a small game.

Get the main idea done in an hour. Your gane is gonna be small, don't make it big, plan something small, could even be a simple minigame or a single boss fight, the core can be expanded if its well done.

Bring mints and arm pit spray deodorant for you and your possible coworkers so you focus on the game and not on their putrid smell or your own smell. Of course, take a shower before you go. People amazingly forget basic hygiene for these things.

don't use the shitty block actions "set movement speed to something" in keyboard events and give diagonals/pressing opposite directions proper treatment - just code movement like you would in a normal programmed game

I like gamemaker for the organization and ease of deployment more than anything. The easy to use scripting language is a bonus.

Classes would be nice though, but there's alternate ways of doing it.

The first four years were self-taught, after that I started Uni. Keep in mind that while you can learn a lot there they don't teach you how to program. I had Java and C courses, but these are only able to tell you about the absolute basics of the language.

Writing a disassembler is the same as writing anything else, try and error and reading other peoples code for example Capstone and LLMC. Panopticon went thru 4 rewrites, that's normal. Much of the architecture and the analysis was implemented directly out of research papers, tho.

Nice, my experience was similar to that although I haven't programmed nearly as long as you.
I've had two courses that dealt with assembly which I enjoyed and actually learned things. The other programming courses were pretty much useless since it was things I already knew before even getting into Uni.

I started by following a C++ book aimed at teenagers, it was mostly a series of tutorials to build a some GUI windows applications. I added more and more stuff to these after I was done with the book. My first own project was a tool to generate entries for the rules.ini file of C&C3. Building this stuff was simply more fun than playing games, it never felt like a chore for me.
