The Zeti could work too! I love the fact that they can control electromagnetism which is why they can control Eggman's robots. That's actually kind of a cool idea. I wish their attacks were more visually electromagnetic or something. I also wish their personalities were more like traits that defined their characters rather than, their whole character. The difference between the deadly six and the Koopalings is the Koopalings don't talk. They HAVE to be over the top stereotypes so that you can understand their personalities based on their appearance and body language. But when you have characters that not only exist in a story where everyone can talk, but also a story where they try to actually have a semblance of a plot.
They have potential, but they'd work better either mostly mute, like the Koopalings, or if you developed where they came from, what they are and their abilities more.

Knuckles had a pretty good character progression to his position among Sonic's Shitty Friends™.
S3&K: first contact with outside world, gets tricked by Eggman but helps Sonic save the day.
SA1: still a bit too trusting of Eggman for someone who almost got killed by him, but comes around once the facts are obvious. At peace with not knowing everything about his past
SA2: only gets involved because Master Emerald already in danger, but doesn't hesitate to help out Sonic and co once he knows they're in trouble.
Heroes: enough of a trusted teammate that Tails picks him up off of Angel Island before they go find Sonic.

I honestly don't know what to expect. The video seems to imply boost gameplay heavily, but I don't know. After what Iizuka said about boost I'm confused and find it hard to believe they would go back to it. Classic boosting was weird though.
The video also makes it look like there will be some 2D gameplay in the Modern levels. I don't really have a problem with that, unlike some other players. I'm really curious if they'll implement some sort of 2D gameplay where you can switch the lane you're on like on the trailer, but that was probably just to show something cool on it, and it looked pretty cool.

However the story didn't mention anything about the past other than "Hey this looks familiar!". The Sonic Twitter is genuinely a great thing.
But it exists because of the Sonic source material.
If you make a game referencing popular culture and all it's older stuff, it becomes dated quickly and the humour wears off fast. A whole game of just that would do so oh so much.
You make a game with it's own great (or not so great lines) you have an instant classic and then the Sonic Twitter can make jokes about it.

Ever seen a Seltzer and Friedberg movie? Scary Movie, Epic Movie, [Insert Movie here] Movie, etc.? They're pretty much fueled by memes, but they're so forced and old that their humor wore thin pretty quickly. Try playing any given Borderlands game and marvel at how stale their references are.

It shouldn't be taken too seriously, but the Death Egg was considered a serious threat.
It's like Mickey Mouse adaptations of stories or originals, there's some character developments and Pete is always a dickhead who poses an actual threat, but it's lighthearted overall. And seeming as Sonic was based off those kind of cartoons it's not a bad comparison to make.
Same with Mega Man, the classic series is a blue robot stopping a mad scientist, it shouldn't be taken to SA2 end levels but it should have some stakes raised, a boss battle with some characters in between like Blues, and then an ending climax where the scientist runs away for another day.
I agree, trying to have political and military shenanigans and girls shot in the head was too far for Sonic really. I love SA2's corny ass story but it lead on to Shadow and that.
But I don't think it should be COMPLETELY devoid of story just because of the characters appearance or because it's for kids. Kids like a good story too. Just not 06 or Shadow or Muh-ria levels.

After a week of getting frustrated with myself and coming up short in a bunch of my work, I think I've finally decided to just stop drawing Sonic fanart altogether. Been drawing a whole hell of a lot though, getting back into traditional mediums, focusing on human anatomy and other technical art stuff that isn't remotely Sonic-related.
I think drawing Sonic fanart almost my entire life really ruined my ability to draw anything else. Stunted my growth, I guess. Maybe I'll come back to it once drawing people feels normal.Also next OP should have Amy.
