Really? There are tons of VNs with blatantly under 18 characters (from late teens to actual lolis) with ero scenes. Japan is fairly lax with lolicon manga, not sure why VNs would be any different.

I'll also point out that steam allows nekopara even though the VN directly states that they're like the cat equivalent of 15, and even though the sex scenes don't come with the steam version the patch is officially supported and even in Western countries I don't think anyone has gotten in trouble (could be wrong).

There's nothing inherently wrong with 'build a relationship with someone and then sleep with them because you both want to' which is the story generally promoted in most dating sim routes. It can get formulaic, and it's nice to shake it up a bit and have some characters that sleep with you early and some late and so on.

The objection tends to come from people who are making a couple of leaps of logic, neither of which is 100% wrong, but not 100% right either. First, they think players don't really care about their waifus but just want to get laid by a character, feel entitled to that reward, and get angry if it's denied them. There ARE players who are like that (watch the rage explosion from people who weren't allowed to fuck some character in a game because he didn't have a route or he was gay or whatever) but obviously many players do have much more tender feelings towards characters and can be sad about things not turning out the way they wanted without having the urge to shoot up gyms.

Second, they think that players are translating the worst possible interpretation of route-structure mentality into the real world, and therefore coming to expect that if they give a woman 10 diamond necklaces to raise her Approval score, she should automatically sleep with them. While, again, this sort of opinion does exist in the real world, I don't think it's reasonable to tie it to video games, because frankly most people are aware that video games are not real.

There are so many factors. How annoying this "emotionaly unstable" thing would be? Straight or gay relationship? Are they childhood friend/sibling/ex/coworkers, to explain why MC sticks around? How this LI and MC's personalities fit together, how do you intend to resolve the conflicts?

I mean, anyone can write whatever, but making players like it it's another thing. It depends greatly on who your target demographic is. If it's the standard eroge players looking to rub one off and have fun, there are plenty of more fun-sounding options out there. If it is the "I'm here for the story" crowd, you need a a good story or great characterization.

I wouldn't be able to pull it off myself, but a part of that is because the idea has no personal appeal to me. If you really care about this char, you should write about her. It's always better to write the story you want to write.

Has anyone tried Lifted Dreams? It looked really polished and the premise seemed interesting, so I thought it might be a nice little experience.

I was very wrong.

The VAs are shit unsurprisingly. But it's more than that, the writing itself is really awkward, like they're trying to sound deep and artistic but it's obvious they don't have much experience. This game has never heard of subtlety, that's for sure. Plot events just happen with no build-up, and scenes don't have any real impact due to poor use of music and visual assets. I couldn't stand more than 20 minutes before giving up.

It's just some noob's first shitty VB, and usually this wouldn't bother me so much. But the thing is the game actually had a pretty decent production value and premise, and they wasted it. I want to steal their nice assets and make an actually decent game.

We've been working on it for about three weeks. We've made some pretty good progress in that time.

The most fun and the easiest part is flowcharting everything. Give me a mindmap and rough goal I need to work out and I'm as happy as a clam. Not to mention, taking our experiences with drama queen mall goths and using them as a springboard for the characters is fun. Plus, it's satisfying to break down the characters and make them more rounded and understandable.

The hardest part is working through those days when motivation, energy and enthusiasm for anything is gone. Sometimes I can do it but some days I can't even force myself out of bed.

For the next project, I want to work on implementing basic Ace Attorney style evidence presenting so I can do a little murder mystery set within an animal enclosure at Zoo.

Yesterday I had a real shitshow of a working day, then went ice skating on the company dime, which was kind of cool. In the evening we played Kings at the house, which is kind of pedestrian since that's the game we pretty much always play, then went out to our usual bar. It's a bar with a dance floor and the dancing was, as they say, lit. Here's an example of why constantly using "he", "she", "him", or "her" when the characters interacting are the same gender is confusing. For simplicity sake I based it on text I'm sure most of you are familiar with.

I saw Raithfyre at a sex shop in LA yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face.
