I figured out it works mainly based on luminosity (instead of colour), which means that you need to darken the middle part for a splat to extend outwards.
Here's an earlier attempt with more uniform luminosity, where everything sort of shifts sideways instead.

Next I'll work on actually moving a unit. Not exactly sure how I'll do that though. Right now each tile stores its neighbors to the immediate north/south/east/west. I was thinking I'd select a tile, look for whichever neighbor is in the correct direction, then repeat until I get to the destination.

Some progress today, but mostly just spent my time rebuilding everything and rewriting scripts so that I could get it all working in a 3D scene instead of 2D. I'm happy with the results and it gave me a chance to clean up some spaghetti code and other housekeeping.

So yeah! Landing! It's a lot easier to see what's going on now that you've got that third dimension. The only thing I'm not sure about is whether your trail should have a shadow or not. Would that make it easier to read the scene or just clutter it up more?

And sorry for potato quality gif. What software should I be using for making gifs/webms of my game?

Tried improving this with some more transitional elements.
With some particles it should look pretty splatty.

Think I'm going to use her as a boss, and have her drop fruits/nuts from the top, which sap your HP if they land on you, or grow into little enemy plants if they land on the ground.

I was using unity to make a simple game but I regret it now. Unity is great for 3D projects and some 2D projects. But if you're making something simple like a VN, or a 2D puzzle game like I am, it's a better idea to switch to something more basic. Unity is overkill for games like that.
I switched to monogame, and wish I did earlier because now I have to re-do a lot of stuff. But I have so much more control over everything now, and its not running all of that extra unused unityengine code.

my only complaint are the jumping sound effects jesus christ my ears. atleast turn it down or make the bleep less agressive and more cute or nuetral. if you plan on sticking with this style maybe deck the game out with particle effects which tend to compensate for a lack of geometry. really go nuts with particle effects, like little dust clouds for each foot step, motion lines for jumping, ambient floating objects like sparks or leaves, physics based particles coming off of objects when you collect them, etc.

smart use of particles can really sell a game world with a minimilist look. look at tearaway or windwaker.

Help me out AGDG, I am a bit desperate now. Few months ago I was looking for some 3d character creation software, since I am lazy as fuck and cannot into modelling. I remember finding one that would fit my needs, but I lost the name somewhere. All I remember about it was that on the website they had a gallery of a postapo-looking guy with his dog. Dog had several mechanical parts, if I remember correctly.

Chances are this was something else related to 3D and I just remembered it as character creation. I will be really grateful if someone could point me to what that software was.


Also - does anyone have experience with iClone Character Creation? Most searches point me to them but their models look so shitty. Is it just because of low quality content in their demos or is this software incapable of producing something that looks right?

One last update before I go to sleep. After a misguided evening spent trying to implement more and more intricate landing mechanics I have come to my senses, realised that landing your spaceship isn't the focus of the game and instead settled on having you automatically pull up if you exit a landing zone before you touch the ground.

HOPEFULLY this will make it a lot less punishing trying to touch down in hard-to-land areas whilst still keeping the challenge of actually, y'know, pulling off a good landing.

What I would do is figure out a simple formula to figure out the "objective" worth of something, and use that. It doesn't have to be complicated, even just something like a direct 1:1 of gold spent on a potion per HP that the potion heals, or weapons being priced according to their damage per hit.

Then rebalance it during playtesting if you see people gravitating towards one thing for clear cost effectiveness reasons
