I downloaded this sound bank and every sound has a name with like "door open,slam,creak,handle,metal.wav" but whenever I open them only the first few seconds play. It's like they put a bunch of them on the same file and somehow vlc won't play the next ones.

Any idea how to play all of them? I tried windows media player, vlc, audacity and nothing works.

I'm sure this will have to change eventually, but it's good enough for now. Added some price algorithms for all my item types. The store only sells tier 0/1 items so the buy prices are pretty low. Sell prices are 1/3 of buy price, and identify price is 1/10 of buy price. The merchant skill can modify these by up to 50%, which means the minimum buy price and maximum sell price are both 50% if you increase your Merchant skill to level 17 and become a Master.

Postan progress of my archer tower.

So far I've got quite the list of mistakes I've gotta figure out for the next one I'll make:
1. Make a variety of planks and bricks so it doesn't look like one cobbler made the whole tower with bricks that somehow look exactly similar to eachother
2. Better color theory
3. More worn out details
4. Be consistent with the shadows and the light, half of the tower looks like there's complete darkness between the bricks, on the other it looks like they're not, even though they're the same bricks under the same shade.

Will probably find out more stuff to fix until I finish it.

Hey, /agdg/! I noticed the thread was kind of shitty so I decided to post some progress. I've been lurking for a few weeks, but this is the first time posting "progress".

I made a debugging thing for my controller, since I've been testing the player input system. I finally got the configurable axis deadzones and sensitivity working for each axis, cause Unity's sucks balls because you can't edit them at runtime.

The game I'm making is a platform fighter, but you can create your own custom characters and stages. It's basically MUGEN + Smash Bros. The engine is almost "done" and ready for testing. There's just no custom content yet!

Ok, status effects seem to be working. I'll have to do something about their display in the future... icons or something, I dunno. Letters below the HP/MP bars are good enough for now. I implemented Poison and Regen, and now I have to do Resist Air, Resist Fire, Shield (Chance to avoid projectile), and Heroism (+damage for melee attacks).

Then I can start adding spells to create these effects.

Reposting progress.

After a misguided evening spent trying to implement more and more intricate landing mechanics I have come to my senses, realised that landing your spaceship isn't the focus of the game and instead settled on having you automatically pull up if you exit a landing zone before you touch the ground.

HOPEFULLY this will make it a lot less punishing trying to touch down in hard-to-land areas whilst still keeping the challenge of actually, y'know, pulling off a good landing.

Also someone might be making me some music which is nice.

Plans for today are to start putting in some enemies n shit.

The Shield status effect turned out to be a pain because my damage system currently doesn't know the difference between melee/arrows/spells. So rather than fixing that, I decided to add Fire Spikes instead. Any incoming damage will trigger the spikes on any enemy withing a 4m radius, which do 1dStatusEffectStrength damage.

Help me make refine my trade system in my strategy game, pals.

I don't mean the diplomatic trade deals, but the trade on the private level.

My setup so far is that there is 3 stats for each star (star is the private economy level).

>Goods Industry
>Resource Production

The flow of trade is as follows:
Resource Production produces Resource
Goods Industry consumes Resources
Goods Industry produces Goods
Population consumes Goods.

Stars also have natural stats, which give bonuses to any of the three stats above.

(There is no star stats that give bonuses to Goods Industry)

Trading itself. First a price is determined for star's resources and goods. Resource price equals Local Industry divided by Local Resource Production. Goods price equals, Local Population divided by Local Industry.

Then the star goes through all the other stars and finds all the stars whose resource or goods prices are cheaper than its local price. It then "buys" goods and resources from them. Well, it doesn't really buy anything, it just increments +1 VAT to their trade income, whose prices are cheaper.

Not many games even bother with trade. But trade is very important part when it comes to colonization. Without it, there would be no point to establish space colonies - you could just improve your home star for ever and ever.

I also want to turn "Establish Trading Rights" into a double edged swords. So that if you make that deal with the wrong empire, you can end up causing their income increase 300% while yours only increases 5% or god forbit reduces your VAT income by 50%, because resources and goods are as cheap as fuck and the stars in your empire buy all their shit from there instead of your empire.

Well basically unity has a functionality when you can subscribe to an event and when you hover a mouse cursor over shit you get that mouse over event.

Hopefully I'll be able to express this.

I'm using Unity3d and don't know much coding.

There are lots of characters the player can choose from. Each one has a single script that has both:
>a generic way to control a character (keys to move, rotate, aim, attack, etc also physics and whatnot)
>the specifics of that character (stats, mesh, skills, etc).
The first part is and should be equal for all characters.

I could continue like this but I'd like to change this to having 2 scripts per character, one a generic controller that would be shared between all characters, and one with the specifics of the character.

That way if I want to change something in the generic part if affects all characters. Does this make sense? What's the best way to do this, make them communicate, etc?

For example, if the player presses the LMB, the controller script detects it, decides an attack can be performed and then tells the char specific script "you may perform attack1, whatever that means".

How is that last part done? Should the generic controller raise a flag and the specific part check each tick for actions to do based on the flags? Or how should this be structured to begin with?

You only need to add the Archer class to your character player entity, because the Archer class has all of the functions of the PC class.

This is literally the most basic example of OOP that they teach in any programming course. I'd suggest going through a good programming book in the language of your choice before continuing your RPG, as that is probably the gametype that gains the most from following OOP principles, and it will make your job a lot easier.

The way you explained it is a bit confusing, but I think what you're looking for is "inheritance". Basically the way it works is you have one "parent" class, and then "child" classes, which have all of the features (variables and methods) of the parent class, but they can "override" methods from the parent class. So you want your "parent" class to have a generic method called "Attack()", which you then override in the "child" class. That way if the script is an instance of the child class, whenever you call "Attack()", the new one will be called.

Just Google "c# inheritance" for the specifics.

I think I need to flesh out the population mechanics first.

I find the conventional 4X method kinda lacking, where you just plant a small seed population on a planet and it grows by itself and thats all there is to it. It is unrealistic, since people migrate and natural population growth form birth is not that fast. Also, pop caps don't make any sense.

So, I already have Habitability stat. Habitability stat in other words simulates how much would people want to live there. So, pops from overgrowded worlds might want to migrate en masse to new colonies with high habitability. But to prevent all pops in existence from gathering on the best planet on the map, the habitability should be reduced by each pop on the colony. I think that it would make the population cap off naturally at empire wide optimum. Kinda like an analogy to osmosis. And I also think that it would make the "open borders" policy a double edged sword aswell. If one makes that deal with the wrong empire, one might find that 30% of their pops decided to migrate to the other empire, because their colonies had better habitability scores and now 30% of your tax income is gone. Real world analogue would be like the middle eastern economic refugees, coming in millions to live in the better living standards of Europe.

The above is very simple to implement. Just calculate some numbers, easy peasy. But I also want my population to have ideologies. I want them to have differnet ideologies. How should I implement that while also retaining the migration mechanic.

I am thinking of having population as a units called pops, Each pop is subscribed to a certain ethos. Each pop represents like 10billion people or smth.

Another solution would be to implement ethos scores for the star. Each ethos has a percentage score representing how much of population holds that ethos. The percentages of all ethoses summed should be 100.

Just gave it a little play and just barely scraped past Stage 1 on my last life with 30 or 40 helath left.

It's pretty fun, only feedback I can give is that it needs a period of invinsibility when you respawn after a death, other than that it seemed fine.

How do you think XP should be distributed in a party-based RPG?

Some of my characters don't engage in combat very often (e.g. the Cursor that stays back and applies buffs/debuffs), so they'll miss out on a lot of XP in a typical "kills = XP" system.

I was going to try an "assist" system (e.g. if you buff a player that kills an enemy, you get the XP too) but it seems complicated.

Another idea I had was for enemies to drop XP orbs on death that each character can pick up (so you can basically assign the XP yourself if you're careful). It can even be sort of a challenge to "avoid" XP orbs mid-combat with your overleveled character... or maybe that's just annoying.

I kinda want all the characters to be around the same level, so maybe I should just give every character XP at the same time (with some randomness thrown in so it's not exactly the same).

AAA games are made by hundreds of developers. Watch a credit roll and look at how many different people worked on that one game. Even with a small team behind you, you're going to be limited in scope to simple games if you want to finish them in a reasonable amount of time.

That said, if you're getting super depressed then play a bunch of games on Kongregate or something. Most of those are by small teams or solo devs and you can get some idea of what to look for design-wise. The best part is most of them have tens of thousands of plays.

Would you play pokemon go but set in a steampunk world?

The idea is that you catch cogs and cogs monsters. The cogs help you evolve your cog monsters, then you use it to help build gigantic towers (at the same places as the gyms in GO). You can place only one cog monster per cog tower. There are four teams: Order, Liberty, Wealth, and Chaos.

At every tower spot, the four teams compete to have their tower reach the cog roof first. The first tower to reach the roof gives a huge cog boost to everyone within 1km of the tower spot, and resets all 4 towers.

There are special cogs that you can find at Cog Stops. They can either buff your cog monster, or debuff another team.

I have tons of other ideas like that for this game.

Also, any idea where I should start to do something like that?

Since I would only use GPS I don't really need a server right?

What's the context of this one? If it's a random background loop I think it's better if it started at the 0:20 mark where it's softer.
The throat singing starts and stops too abruptly, I would either remove it or keep it droning on for longer and less loudly.

In a real language, I would start implementing composite types with a damage type that encapsulates a range and can in the future be extended with other details. All of your existing damage variables would use this type. From a quick google search, I could not find composite types in GML. That's disturbing if true.

I've coded a crappy version of that before where I dug the corridors then placed the rooms in any position touching a corridor. What ends up happening is a bunch of dead ends that don't lead to rooms. It's much easier to do it the other way around.

the solution is to use more and more variables. That's always the solution to any problem I run into.

It really doesn't matter, my GM game has an incredible amount of variables, it doesn't slow anything. It's even a bit of a mess in some Create Events with variables being initialized that I don't even use any more. It seriously doesn't matter, a single collision check is what you need to be concerned about.
