You have to play smart until T7 where you get 2 fighters. At T4, you can strafe them headon (preferably sideways or in line) to gain the advantage since 4 hosho fighters are stronger than 5 langley fighters (mathematically).

At T5/6, use your friendly cruiser/BB's AA to weaken enemy USN fighters before engaging (by baiting).

T5 is a good learning tier since there are potential strong AA botes like Texas/Cleveland and you will learn how to deal with 201 bogues.

How long ago did you ask that? Back when they were freshly release, people bought into their meme. They've proven to be worthless for some time now.

IJN Cruisers are great through the entire line.
US cruisers are fun at T5. Maybe at T6, but this depends on who you ask. After that, it's not worth grinding.

Low tier battleships are bad on purpose. They get a bit better at T5, and pretty much reach their best at T6-T7. After that they are still good, but you get diminishing returns due to high-tier META. Just keep in mind that their gameplay will always be slow, and their accuracy always be low when compared to cruisers.

Now then, german cruisers ARE playable. They may not even be particularly painful, specially if it's your first line. But once you've gone through other ship lines, particularly IJN and Russian cruisers, you begin to realize how massively inferior they are. The effort you need to put in to get a decent performance out of german cruisers it's just not worth it. If anything, go for the T5 german cruiser and stop there.

They make up for it through sheer alpha damage. It may seem you're not doing much, but those single 4k dmg hits pile up quickly. Also, the occasional citadel.
IJN BB's are generally faster than USN, with T5 kongo reaching 28 knots, T8 Amagi something similar. USN begins going fast at T8, and the T9 Iowa goes up to 33 knots.

German BB's are coming soon™, at some time in the middle of August, maybe. They're getting 25 second reloads (but with less damage, and maybe worse accuracy) and should be faster (at least 30 knots).

If I had to redistribute all of their skills before I played them, I'd be sitting in front of my computer for hours trying to remember the build for each of them. I'd forget that I was working towards AFT on this one, or that I wanted to experiment with SE on that one, or that this one was also my captain for that premium and needs EM. It was a HUGE relief to me that I was not having all of my captains forcibly respecced.

Sounds like you got completely outplayed. Tier differences aren't nearly as overwhelming in this game as it is in tonks. Aoba's 203mm will wreck you as badly as Ibuki's since it's the same shell and same gun. If you wouldn't position yourself that way against Ibuki, you shouldn't do it against Aoba, either. Low tier does NOT mean not dangerous in this game, especially when it's a bote as comfy as Aoba.

If you're getting hit, then you've already fucked up. They have all the tools in the world to just not be spotted if they play smart in most situations, and even if they do get spotted they can dodge a hell of a lot of fire just because of how maneuverable they are.
