Nah, it's not because they don't have a base class, it's because they're such copies of other jobs.
AST is pretty. It fits Ishgard very well since they use Astrology, but it wasn't what I expected from something like a Time Mage which we will never have ever. ;w; Also it's too similar to WHM and borrows some from SCH.
DRK is just a DRK by name. It's not that life-surrendering, life-stealing DPS we knew. It's okay though. It's too similar to PLD.
MCH is fine for most people but I think they wasted potential to make it a Garlean job that uses gunblades, and I think it shouldn't have been so similar to BRD.

There's really not much to do, honestly. Dancer as TP healers would be the same anyway.
(Al)chemists might work, but they might just become a copy of WHM/SCH if they mainly have their own skills unless they incorporate using potions with them. Maybe it could be a job where you can use unlimited amounts of that potion (as long as you have one it in your inventory) in exchange for something. Maybe MP? And the capacity on the potency doesn't have effects on them.

lightspeed is somewhat unique, but that's one of the handful of abilities that AST has that are. it's also less beneficial than PoM when it comes to DPSing since it comes with a 25% potency nerf.

synastry is also unique, but again, handful of abilities.

aspected benefic is regen with the first tick applied immediately.

how about the rest of the kit, which is basically "white mage -10 potency"? about the only thing with a potency bump over WHM is collective unconscious with a 50 potency gain over Asylum, but it's also more awkward to use for tank healing, especially on large bosses with cleaves. you could also make an argument for essential dignity, since it goes up to 1000 potency, but tetragrammaton's 700 potency is in some ways better due to its reliability.

I remember back when AST just came out. All the guilds were using ASTs in dungeons because they had something to prove.

Very seldom did I ever actually feel comfortable with an AST healing me. No problems with SCH/WHM though, or when the non-AST healer picked up the slack of the AST. It's the worst having to pick up slack of stubborn players who want to prove something even if they have to play a bad class.

Well, if I were to balance it then make its fairy weaker, maybe affected by Cleric Stance. It's clearly designed as half DPS/Healer though.
Although the point is that there's really nothing like it, same with WAR as a better OT because it does better DPS.

If sch is nerfed WHM will just replace SCH.
AST will feed ewers to the WHM to keep dpsing. The way the fairy works will just be replaced by a constant medica II and the lack of burst healing that AST has will just be covered by the WHM tetra, benediction and cure III.
