Have you considered forcing yourself? The "hard" parts of coding are shit you don't have to deal with when using an engine. I think everyone should learn simply because I consider basic coding/scripting to be "moderate-to-advanced computer use". If you've tried before and had problems, consider two things: lots of resources are garbage, and a big part of learning is pushing yourself past the frustrating parts. The most important programming skill is google-fu, know how to figure out the information you need and make the right search.

I don't know much about discalculia but I find the "mathematical" nature of programming very overstated. Logic would be a better comparison, but really it's just chains of events/functions. I suppose the primary comparison to math is in its "terse" presentation. I hope you tried books and not web tutorials, because web tutorials are almost all trash. Lots of books are trash too, but the good comprehensive books on languages are the best way to learn.

Glad you have posted! I was playing your demo again, and I've noticed that you can "bounce". What I mean is, that if you keep on pressing the jump key, the character will keep on jumping. In most games, if you jump and reach the ground, you have to press the jump key again for the next jump, and the constant pressing of the key won't do anything. I don't know if it's intentional or not, but I wanted to warn you.

Another thing: You have mentioned that you process the bitmaps via command line. May I ask why you just do the same with the game engine itself (so with C++ and SDL)? I've just crafted a small algorithm which reads a 24 BMP image and creates a tile map from it.

Your progress is nice, nevertheless. May I ask: do you save the changes? So if the player restarts the game, will the changes persist?

Day 6 of Tryin' to Make Vidya Games

Oh fuck I should be in bed, but this death animation is taking way more time than I expected. It's in the webm above in unfinished form when he gets hit by the laser.

Waves are working how I want, and now there are actually penalties for getting hit, little life icons and a game over screen. I think I should either make a life bar and have the bullets do damage or make the bullet hit animation more dramatic, because at the moment the laser death is just so much more intense.

I've been melting that turtle pixel by pixel for the past two and a half hours, but I think it'll look cool when I'm done.

Also got a local music guy to agree to make a background song for it, though it's pretty short notice for the jam.

Starting to think I'll actually have this thing done in time.

I've read some Unity books but they were rather shitty as they don't try to teach you concepts, they flat out tell you to use X built in feature / download Y asset. Which translates into: if what you want isn't exactly the same as what we're offering, you're fucked. If the feature is Pro Only, you're fucked.

For video tutorials, Sebastian Lague is a patron deity for Unity. Quill18creates has quite a lot of basic material you can download if you want to see the code for something in particular.

The resolution setting currently only changes the window size, fullscreen is always at desktop resolution.

It is intentional but not necessarily final. I'm not a big fan of the strictness of having to be on the ground when you press jump, but I might change it so each press only results in one jump.

I made the mask converter right after the level converter without really thinking about it, there's no real reason why it couldn't be done in-game. The tool still uses SDL for reading the images anyway.

Yes, everything is saved on exit and loaded on next startup. You can actually see that happen in the demo as well, it will remember whether it was windowed or fullscreen.

In my opinion, don't look for a book for Unity, look for a book for C#. You want a comprehensive book on the actual language, and polish your google skills to find the relevant library documentation and some short examples to see how to carry that knowledge into a library or an engine (Unity).

It's done. The working title for the game and the name of the playable alien race. Now that I have these elements in place, I can start typing up the actual text that will appear in-game, since I have a solid ground base to build off of.

Progress:
This is a difficult one, because people can love it, or hate it. So they will go or stay according to the received feedback.
New MC sprites, got rid of the gray color on the palette, fixed the glowing duck face, and they are more close to her final desing, since the older sprites were done based on early sketches. Tried to make them cuter too, adding small details like the ears, and bigger eyes.

Own setting, albeit I'll be taking some cues from PW in terms of style etc. I'm not exactly sure what it's going to be, but I have a few ideas in my head. It's in the air though, so who the fuck knows what it's going to be.

Some of them are alright, but most of them fall short for a variety of reasons - most of them being small things that help make AA feel better to watch and play (it is, after all, a visual novel when you get down to it). For example, AO is fun, but it's boring to watch due to how rigid everything is (screen-shakes, moving benches, and all of that makes a huge difference for gameplay). AAO or that online case-maker is slightly better, but something about it feels cheap. The text goes too fast, animations are fucked at times, or everything just feels... off, I guess. It's hard to describe, but you can notice it when you try it out. Those little touches that make it look and read better really impact the enjoyment people have.

There's just this fine-line with AA-style games, and you either make it, or fuck it up. And while most of that is writing, a lot of it is presentation. You can have great writing, but shit presentation - it will hamper your writing. However, if you have shit writing, but great presentation, your writing will be made better. For a decent example, look at Danganronpa. The writing is, honestly, pretty shite. But, you ignore that in-game because the style of the game sucks you in, and gets you engaged. AA also does this. While it lacks a lot of the juice that DR has - it has enough to get the player engaged, and the writing is decent enough to hold up on it's own.

That's my little rant on AA games and their clones, at least.

Because reasons, I would really really like a material in UE4 to react to sound.

Specifically I have a character which will lack a mouth, but whos "aura" i'd like to increase and decrease in volume as it speaks.

Anyone know how I could do this? Is the only way to manually map out the volume or is there a better way?

If worst comes to worst, I could just "lipsync" it with a "virtual" bone, but I rather not.

UE4 (blueprints especially) is very fucking limited in terms of the information you can get from a sound cue. I would write a program that analyses the sound and can export the syncing data to a format UE4 can read. You might even be able to leverage the UE4 plugin for sound visualization to get the data. LOD is level of detail. It exists to save computing power. Take for instance a 3d model very close to the camera. you want it to look good, so its better to use a more complex model. So your LOD1 can be a 50k tris model. Get the camera more distant and you can swap this model to a lower level of detail model. Lets say 25k. keep doing that until you have a 3k model very very far from the camera. All those numbers i posted are aproximations and are no rules to the number of polys each LOD should have. its totally based on what you need to achieve.
Tessellation simulates more detail where there was none using math that i dont know since im not into shader coding, it uses the actual geometry and maps to generate detail with displacements and subdivisions on a simulated manner. Its different from normal or bump maps that will not displace or subdivide the vertices in any way.

So I went into C# with brute force. Now I can display system stats and have a clock in my window.
I want to add sound volume indication, but that's where this shit completely drops the ball. Windows has a CoreAudio API, but all of its tutorials (of which there are basically none) are for C++ and were written during Windows 7 times. My first issue was even finding out that I couldn't call an Include of this system functionality but actually needed to use a wrapper.
Then I found one, but it's just slightly different from all the other C# people who used the API, so everything that I try to do is slightly off.

I'll either have to rewrite everything in C++ or do my COM wrapper implementation myself. Which, I guess, is a good learning opportunity either way.

My gamedevving is done with UE4, mostly with blueprints. I'm not averse to using C++ for that (in fact, I already attempted some stuff but then the editor shat itself), but currently I'm mostly in a prototyping stage where I want quick success.

The C# thing is a thing on the side that I do to make my vidja life easier. I have it pinned on my second monitor while playing.
That's why I said it's outside of the scope of this thread. It's technically not gamedev.

In ue4, is there a way to use custom depth to render objects ontop of other ones? Imagine having a wall with a character behind it, and the character being treated by the renderer as being in front of the wall? Ergo the verticies behind the wall being sorted ahead of the ones of the wall.

Doing custom outlines and colorins is easy, but I'd like the object to be "normaly" rendered.

Units in Starcraft are simply very disposable. The amount of units controlled by a player is a multitude of the amount on Generals, resources are available in higher numbers, more than two production facilities are the norm and the only thing limiting growth is unit cap.
C&C Generals doesn't have a unit cap because coming back is easy by setting up a well-executed micro move to even the numbers.
Which, from the description, sounds like a thing that happens in Starcraft, but is actually completely different.

Hey fags I have an idea for a game and I need a programmer to program all of it. Kthx

I was working with a friend on an idea but he ditched it to go work on his own game. So now I'm looking for a programmer to take his place. The game is a 2D sidescroller, 7 worlds, 4 levels with a reoccurring miniboss every second level and boss at the end of each world. Different weapons can be built with scrap enemies drop and blueprints found hidden in levels.

The style of the game retro-futuristic mixed in with a TOTALLY RADICAL '90s attitude and a big focus on gadgets and toys. All the enemies and weapons are some kind of toy or gadget, like enemy toy soldiers, toy dinosaurs, which'd you fight with water guns, yoyos etc. A very boyhood kind of game.

My role in the project besides useless idea guy was game designer, level designer and some roles related to art like concept artist, character designer, tileset artist and shit like that. I also had some marketing ideas but those still had to be worked out more.

So, if that sounds interesting to anyone feel free to reply.

i went to unity because i came from 3d. and while i was doing freelance i got to learn some unity, like the mecanim system. then a dude asked me to add some scripts to make some bones move and then i started learning C#. After a while i was thinking about making a game. I asked on the agdg chat if i should keep using unity they said learning another game engine would just make me loose time. so i learned some c# and started a small game got it released on mobile.
