In 2 stock, you lose a life and your enemy goes straight to "extra credit" on you, and the hits he gets on you then are going to last the entire rest of the match. In 4 stock there are more opportunities for a losing party to claw back to an equal-stock-equal-percent middle ground, which is fair in Melee considering the game's relentlessly fast juggle-to-kill-move/gimp centric gameplay. I think 3 stock is a good middle ground considering SSB4's life expectancy.
