So maybe. Try clouds of dust. or something once you get some graphics in.

Pachinkos are a fucking hit on japan right now, they are going to control all the market in the next years.
And you are talking more from your nostalgic feelings than other thing, people right now don't want to spend money on only one life in a game when they can play all they want in their homes.

just remember that plenty of games with average or less visuals have become hits because the game itself is good. Focus on gameplay and the user experience. Your art should exist primarily to complement gameplay.

I don't want to be rude so I'm not going to name it, but there was a game I really liked in DD and because it didn't have any graphics it seems like no one really payed attention to it. And I was one of the few ones who give him feedback.
>>148958424
But you can always make your game around arcade mechanics, like make it only with one life, short but difficult, nice art etc.

>>
>>148959060
What does "style over substance" means?
>>
(Reposting from the old thread)
Factions are now in: allies and foes. Shared enemies and rogue ships are also supported.

You can also see the player (blue-grey ship) using two weapons at once, the regular peashooter and the bomb-like attack.

Stacking weapons will be the main way to keep up with the red side's ever-increasing firepower. Allies will be occasionally available through calling reinforcements or attacking an enemy ship with a lucky shot of the Point of View Gun.

Does this look too difficult? Simply not fun? Feedback would be welcome.

Here's a card game idea for you. Got to try this game with my family, pretty fun although it often got us to Monopoly levels of shadenfreude

All players are dealt 5 cards face up from a double deck of standard cards, no jokers
The rest of the deck is left on the table and a card is dealt from it face up in the middle of the table

Players take turns clockwise from the dealer to play their cards
Each turn, a player can either draw a card from the deck, or play a card onto the face up card in the middle of the table. The players aren't required to have 5 cards.

However, if the card that is on the table matches the value of a card the player has, the player has to play a card with the same value.
If the card that forced you to play a card belonged to another player(which will be the case beyond the first card), the matcher "punishes" the player who the card belonged to.
When you punish a player, you choose between 3 actions after playing your card:
>Steal a specific card from the player
>Tell him to play 2 cards(he gets to choose which and in which order)
>Tell him to draw a card from the deck.

If the punished player is the very next player in turn, skip that player.
If you draw a card with the same value as the table card during your turn (not while punished) you have to also play the card and punish.
You do not have to match/punish a card that you yourself placed.

Each player wants to get the sum of their cards to precisely 14.
>Ace=1 or 11, Jack=12, Queen=13, King=14
When a player has precisely 14 in his hand, he puts the cards away in a pile for scoring and draws 5 more cards face up

When the last card is drawn from the deck, whoever drew it adds it to his pile of collected cards and all piles are counted
Whoever has the most cards in his pile wins the round and the next player clockwise deals the next round

Arcade-like games are fun and all but there's also the type of games that take awhile to finish or are more slow-paced but relaxing to play.

After using a bit-wise tile method to map tileset, and getting poor results, I manually modified any faulty values as I found them to map them properly, this is the result, there are still some incorrect tiles, but I can't be bothered fixing them with this mess.

If it's your first programming language, it doesn't matter, since the basics are all the same. Once you get into coding, the language, once again, won't matter, since you will get into anything easily.

If you're here, thanks so much for the feedback on Ball Run.
This is why I post here. I would have never thought that using the default cursor would be better because I would have thought moving objects around by mistake would be annoying. But you and the people who made videos both made it clear that I need to make that a priority.
I'm in the process of reworking the entire game but fixing a lot of bugs as I do so. Including the worst one: The simulation doesn't always have the same results.
Also the game will have a goal, but that part is probably a few demodays away.

A recursive function is a function that calls itself.

A very basic example would be this:
http://pastebin.com/ZgFiERNG

And the the equivalent iterative method he mentioned would be doing it with the standard for loop.
>>
>>148964683
>The simulation doesn't always have the same results
Does it depend on delta time somewhere? If you're not feeding a psuedo-random number generator with the system clock, that's the most likely source of irregular results.

I assume pushing the return address on the stack and the other variables is more time consuming.
Personally i don't really like recursion my self due to the limited stack, if you have a complex function that uses like 200 kB per stack frame you might run out of the stack quite quickly

Isn't recursion the most effective performance wise?
>>
>>148965221
The issue was with Unity's physics engine. They use PhysX which does have some level of randomness to it.
Now I'm using Farseer which delivers the same results every time (as long as you're using the same PC).
Supposedly the difference isn't too big on other computers, but whether or not the user has an Intel or AMD processor can make the difference bigger from what I've read.
Evidently the only way to get perfect determinism is without using floating point numbers.
>>
>>148965468
No, it's only more convenient and intuitive to use in some cases.
>overhead from function calls
>possible stack overflow if you fuck up
>>
>>148965569
or without using cos, tan, or sin. But you need those in a physics engine.
>>
>>148965468
Recursion continuously allocates memory for the next recursive function call on the stack while still executing the calling function, meaning that deallocation doesn't happen for any function call until the recursion has reached its termination criteria and the initial function returns.

There are now two firing modes
>Player locks into the direction they were facing before firing (either left or right) but can move about freely.
>Player stops moving but may change directions including up and down while shooting.
I think this could work well if I design most of the combat to be carried out mainly horizontally and leave the vertical shooting for the odd encounter or player creativity. It reserves two buttons though which I don't like so much.

That's not an issue though, I know what it does and why it does it. There's nothing accessing or referencing this outside of this one thing, which can't break since the values will always be the same.

If I end up refactoring it at all, I'll do it in a proper way. Even a simple switch would be about 10 times better than this as well, but I am not going to bother since in reality I am just making it slightly more readable.

LET ME TELL YOU

I love Star fox 64's branching paths and how they work. If you just go through the level without doing much of anything extraordinary besides surviving then you go down the easy path BUT if you manage to fulfill a certain pre-requisite you get a shot at the harder path. A WHOLE NEW LEVEL THAT'S HARDER AND MORE FUN.

Like in Katina, you've gotta destroy the core when it appears. You've only got ONE minute. If you don't destroy it you'll be forced down the easy path instead of losing a life. Which is almost more painful.
Or how you've gotta destroy ALL of the spotlights in zoness. MISS ONE AND YOU'RE OUT.

Fuck I love it so much.

Star fox zero was insanely dissapointing to me in that regard. In a lot of regards actually. It just plain sucked. BUT I did like the one concept it introduced and that's... Taking down bosses in different ways. But only the first boss did this. Literally none of the other bosses have this feature.

So you can either shoot all of the satellites on the boss or After blowing off a quarter of the boss's thing off you fly INTO it and shoot it's core. If you do this the boss won't escape and will instead blow the fuck up. That is really cool.

I also enjoy house of the dead 2's civilian saving mechanic. How if you save someone you get to go down another path. And if you saved enough civilians in a level you get a health bonus.

I also like saving the POWs in metal slug games. Saving people in vidya is fun.

A lot of games are masterpieces.
But each in their own way.
For instance DeusEx looks like shit but the different approach to a shooter interesting.

But not every game can re invent the wheel
Ori and the blind forest had mediocre gameplay at best. But the visuals are just so beautifully.

Dark souls had a interesting approach to story telling witch is to set up a world and let you discover remnants of it very DnD

Hell even flappy bird was a master peace in it simplicity.

I have. You're right, it's a shit game.

The branching paths system is a system I am absolutely in love with but if the game itself is shit that system will not help it.

The levels were just not very fun to play through I liked some of the ideas like finishing a different objective rather than just going through the ring at the end but ehhhh. It doesn't really work with the objectives they set... Being "kill all of these guys" or "destroy all of these things" and if you manage to miss one you have to take a teleporter back to the beginning of the level. That's just no good. The levels aren't replayable and enjoyable. It's not fun.

I don't know of any regular guides, though I've heard good things about HeartBeast's tutorials.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WB2alpO62GM

Game Maker has a few built-in tutorials of its own for making simple stuff, you should check them out.
After you've made Babby's First Apple Clicking Simulator, you should try modifying the example games included with Game Maker to understand how they work.
Next step is cloning a very simple, pre-existing game, then making a simple game of your own design, and finally moving on to a regular project.

I think "tiny house" might fit best if you want to keep things nice and tidy and traditional. Look to Super Mario Land's micro zone for inspiration.

Otherwise, if you're going to shift the tone towards weird after the "inside the monster" level, then go for it.

If you're going to mix the two ideas like the other anon said, you could also have a giant house which turns out to be inside the belly of an even bigger monster.

is this your first attempt with pixel art in general, or just large pixel art?

Judging by his feet you took a small sprite and upsized it, adding more details. Generally you can do more if you just draw the sprite to begin with, IMHO.

One thing I might recommend is try this guy again, but don't use outlines. at the very least, don't use black outlines.

I have a question about vector animation.
I want to make a simple animation of one line gradually changing shape, like pic related. The problem is, I think that Adobe Flash (now Animate) only allows animating shapes as symbols, and you can't make this sort of distortion during the animation - you can only rotate, change size, etc. but not this.
Am I missing something or is Flash really this limited? What other program can I do this in? I know After Effects has animation tools but it seems like an overkill

>but as soon as you mention OOP you get insulted especially Java for no reason at all
there are reasons, but most of the people saying them don't understand the reasons. In the case of java, it's slower than compiled code, but open GL is doing most of the work anyway.
OOP isn't suitable for all tasks, but it's ideal for game dev.

Is there a neat way of separating controller and player logic?

For example, say I want to make a simple game of pong. One player should respond to manual input whilst the other should be AI controlled. I could easily make two separate classes/functions that each handle this differently, but what if I want the player controls to become automatic at some point, or if I want the AI to become easier/harder.

Should such behavior be handled via parsing/state machine through scripts, or are there any better ways?

Don't know how is LMMS but FL Studio's piano roll is 10/10, subjectively the best of professional DAWs, please think about changing your program of choice.
I've started with akai lpk25 which is dirt cheap and works well with a nice arp on board. For ultimate fun experience (imo) you need keys and knobs for that sweet automation of synth's parameters and feeling like you are playing a real instrument. Akai mpk midi is a solid choice I now use to control traktor during gigs. In studio I use ableton launchpad, because it can be used as a 4 octaves keyboard (with pads though) that takes minimal space

Dear aggy daggy,
I'm on a crusade to design the most comfortable game that has ever been made. So far I've assembled these references:
Joe Pera talks you to sleep
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trfHP5LHVNY
Glen Hansard - "McCormack's Wall"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghxweF1WuZ8
Tokyo Road trip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flYiCf2-mFo
This level from The Beginner’s Guide
https://youtu.be/DatJlgN8ZqE?t=33m53s
Vagabondia poems:
http://quod.lib.umich.edu/a/amverse/BAD9506.0001.001/1:11?rgn=div1;view=fulltext

Anyone else want to throw in some more influences that are in the same vein of what I've collected here? I'm trying to build a world for a group of adventurers who seem like good natured people who just woke up from a nap and are kind of grumpy. Any other in depth analysis of what makes these things work in the aesthetic they create would be appreciated as well.

so im making a third person shooter where the thing that can temporarily absorb shots for the palyer will be 4 small rotor drones with iron plates on the sides of them that hover in a circle around the player and deflect rounds. they take damage and have to be repaired with scrap the player finds, the player would buy new drones or find them.

they would fly into the path of a physics object up to a certain velocity. what kind of detection parameter would achieve this?

weapontype = "laser"

the instances create event:
source = noone
weapontype = "laser"
beamtype = lasertestr
if weapontype == noone
{
with(instance_create(x,y,obj_turret_barrel))
{
source = other.id

else if weapontype == "laser"

Buy 2 things:

Get working 3 amateur people (and hook the on a half year contract):
> An artist
> A programmer
> A PR guy/gal
One of these could be you, so you could save s third of the pay

After that, buy a big ass tall table and comfy chairs

Put your goddamn PCs in the table and make a decent game

I've got a pretty good artist friend who wants to do some 2D assets and put them up on some store and sell them. What's the best place for it? He's really good at animating characters but can do general pixel art really well. He doesn't want to do commissions because he says he'd feel bad if someone said ok but felt like he didn't like it.

I want a movement system similar to tribes, with some wing suit like gliding.
Flying on a broom won't be as fast but more relaxed and good for gaining hight.

Its progress time! The last update for Dungeon Break was that I got some new rooms added, as well as some room hazards, and the ability to smash those stupid skull nests and sometimes get treasure!

Tonight I'm gonna try to finally get the Journal working, and maybe if I have time, implement crouch attacks.

Is there any way to make the Godot engine halt the execution of a function for a certain number of seconds?
It doesn't seem to have a sleep() and yield() seems to be built for halting a function until a certain line, not a certain time.

What would be an appropriate engine to use for a simple 2d porn game? No platforming or anything, something on the same level as breeding season, or defiler wings where you visit a town and do a little quest. I'm looking at ren'py and it seems like a good place to start.

If you're just doing a VN, renpy is perfect, if you need actual gameplay you would have to tinker with python which is what renpy uses,

otherwise you could go gamemaker, you can't go more casual than that, I think, the construct2 guy should reply to this too, and the Lovefag too.

Not the C2 guy, but a C2 user and I use it to make 2d porn games. However, the free version has a 100 event limitation so not recommended unless you have the personal edition. I don't know the limitations on Gamemaker, but I'd look at that too.

There's also Unity with Fungus, both are free so I'd check those out too.

Why do I have stupid ideas that require a lot of processing power to work so I have to optimize like fuck? Every little thing I add feels like a punch in the face.
>>
>>148984216

watch some Doctor Who episodes, they had some of those "adventure" episodes which didn't had a large role in any bigger plot but were masterpieces on their own.

-weeping angles (though they have been done to death)
-bunch of people locked in malfunctioned shuttle, one of them starts repeating everything she hears, quicker and quicker, at some point she starts talking BEFORE things are spoken to her
-Empty child, absolute classic, kind in a gas mask spooks everyone by asking them if they are his mummy, everyone he touches grows the same mask after some time
-Entire race that makes you forget everything about them when you loose them out of your sight.

There are some briliant ideas there. Also maybe read through some SCP? It might give you some inspiration, or straight up an idea to adapt.
