RE: Chloe's funeral, can we maybe talk about it being a little weird that Victoria attended?

So we're led to believe that whatever happened that week (events we didn't see), autopilot Max and Victoria managed to cozy up to each other and become friends enough for her to show up. This despite the fact that many of the other girls that Max *is* much better friends with didn't attend. I mean, ok, it doesn't make sense that Vicky and autoMax would make friends so quickly given that her confidence-boosting powers don't exist this time around, but we'll assume it just happens naturally.

Nathan and Victoria were best friends. Chloe - the girl whose funeral it is - was murdered by Nathan. At least a little awkward, no? I'm not sure how everyone would be feeling about her attending due to this relationship ... I mean, it's not like she was involved ... but, yeah, awkward?

On the other hand, presumably this is where the Max/Victoria friendship comes from? Again, probably awkward, but I doubt Max is the kind of person who would hold Victoria's friendship with Nathan against her? We know that Victoria thinks Max is actually pretty cool, so maybe she would try a bit harder than the other girls to comfort her in that week?

Victoria attends the funeral partly to support Max, partly because it makes her look very compassionate and she wants to capitalise on that (yes, Victoria plays popularity games using tragic circumstances, we saw her do it with Kate to Jefferson), and maybe partly because she did feel bad about the death of someone she knew but was on shitty terms with and she wanted the resolution of saying 'goodbye'.

Sure, I didn't mean to imply that Victoria is a bad person or anything, or that her association with Nathan is necessarily a bad thing (I'd argue it's quite sympathetic, given that she seems to be the only person genuinely worried about him).

I don't think anyone would object to her being there on the basis of her own personality/actions. It's just that given her "tension" with Max prior to Chloe's death, and her association with Chloe's murderer, it seems a little odd that things would be all patched up in those 3-4 short days between the two events. If I was Victoria, I'd feel a little awkward attending.

The issue is that Victoria was seemingly one of the few people who was genuinely worried about Nathan, and concerned about his continued mental breakdown. He had problems.

I think she'd be very conflicted at the very least. Probably happy that he is in a place where he can get the help he needs, even if the circumstances that led to him getting there were horrible.

Just as in the game, we learn that Victoria isn't just the Queen Bitch exterior she throws up to the rest of the world. I can see this. Autopilot Max might not have the memories of a future in which she can understand Victoria better, but not only was Max pretty cognisant of Victoria's own insecurities at the beginning of the game week already, but in this new timeline Victoria and Max both are in a dire time of need. Max loses Chloe - granted, she doesn't know just what they would have been to each other, but it's still something absolutely horrible to experience, and we know Max had still been thinking about Chloe. Her loss would still hurt. Victoria loses Nathan, both to prison and insanity. She realizes that her "brother" has been abusing girls, some of whom she had been antagonizing. And that he had apparently even been planning to abuse her in the same way. We've seen how fucked up she is in the Dark Room, in this timeline - between what she finds out about Nathan, Jefferson, Kate, Rachel, herself - it's that and more.
Both having lost a friend, I can see them somehow ending up seeking comfort in each other. Nobody else knows what it's like. While Warren and Kate, Taylor and Courtney would be there for them, they are not really fit to help. They don't understand, and Kate has to deal with her own stuff too. I can see Autopilot Max and Victoria turning to each other and then growing closer through crying sessions.

Her attending is a little awkward. It's practically only not awkward if she does cozy up rather significantly to Max. To a degree where Max would have told her about the childhood they'd shared, Victoria "getting to know" Chloe a bit, wanting to pay respects. Wanting to feel better about herself too.

Definitely. It's heartbreaking to see Max alone, hugging her teddy bear. Having one or two of the girls comfort her would have been better. And since they wanted to bring Victoria in at the funeral, it could appropriately have been her, I agree.

They left the motel that evening and starting driving back up to Seattle. It's like 3am there and the only thing playing is some smooth jazz station, so that calming noise is playing while they pull over and Chloe sees for the first time a major city with her own eyes. It seems as though Jefferson and Nathan were on rocky terms with each other following Rachel's death. Nathan certainly seems to have helped out with Kate, but it also seems like he might have screwed up the drug dosage, given that she partially woke up. We know there was a cut letter in Episode 5 which Nathan had written to Jefferson begging that he let them work together again (it's cut content, so it's questionable whether it's canon or not). This would imply that Jefferson had cut Nathan loose, presumably after all the shit that went down with Kate.

So it's possible that Victoria was a Jefferson-only target? That said, we know Nathan still had access to the Dark Room (and visited it), and Jefferson had left an empty "Victoria" folder laying about. Jefferson knows that Nathan/Victoria are close, so it's questionable that he would have been openly planning her kidnapping in a room Nathan visits. Maybe Nathan did know about it? And if this were the case, yeah, I can see Victoria having an easier time dropping him, regardless of their existing friendship.

Yeah, the "planning" part might be a bit much. Either Jefferson kept his folder locker locked (it seems he doesn't - but he should have. That would have also given us more incentive to explore the Dark Room finding that key, if you remember the conversation we've had about how awkward it was to find the folders and run off before having explored the room in its entirety), or Nathan did at least know. I still have this theory that Nathan didn't know about Rachel's death prior to her being dug up, and so Nathan not having access to the folders would make that more feasible too... Anyway, I agree he probably wasn't actively planning Victoria. I still think it's likely he knew.

Yeah, not disagreeing. Like I said, they would "be there" for them. And Taylor does have that thing with her mother, but maybe she wouldn't be able to "get" Victoria's grief like Max? Maybe even supporting each other through the police questionings and stuff.

This may well be the case. I guess we never really learn very much about how Jefferson/Nathan targeted and kidnapped people in the past. We've long assume the Vortex Club druggings were standard, but they don't really seem like a reliable or safe way to do it.

We know of at least one similar situation - Nathan's drugging of Chloe. Jefferson isn't involved at all, Nathan just takes advantage of the situation. It's *possible* that his plan was to keep her sedated, contact Jefferson, transport her to the Dark Room (somehow?) and do a proper photo shoot ... but that she just woke up too soon? I doubt this is probable though - how do exactly do you transport a doped out Chloe through the Blackwell dorms/campus without being seen?

Jefferson seems to have been associating with Kate for a fair while before her drugging/kidnapping (her being his class assistant). And Jefferson speaks about Kate in the Dark Room as if he had properly wanted her for his collection. So my guess would be that he WAS part of the planning; it wasn't just Nathan acting on his own at the party with Jefferson being brought in after the fact. Arguably their presumed cover of "Kate just couldn't handle her drink and got loaded" worked perfectly. Sloppy as hell, but effective?

Yeah. Nathan and Jefferson both obviously know about the folders, so there's no real use locking the cupboard if they're the only two with access to the room ... so I'd assume that Jefferson wouldn't put anything in there that he wouldn't be happy with Nathan seeing.

I like the "Nathan not knowing Rachel is dead" thing too (given his reaction to Max in the diner in Ep 3), though it feels a little unbelievable. I'd argue something more like, he "knows" she's dead, but was passed out the whole time and doesn't really know any of the details ... so he's just kinda play denial about it all, which is contributing to his deteriorating mental state. Or something.

I mean, at the end of the day, it's probably a little odd to have a "Victoria" folder marked anyway. Why wouldn't he just label it when starting to put together the portfolio? It seems like it's only labelled in advance for narrative purposes. Just a minor quibble. What seems clear is that he (they?) had only been targeting Victoria for a day or two - it was dependent on who won the Everyday Heroes contest - which Jefferson wanted Max to win, thereby being the next target ... but she never entered. And I guess you could argue that his totally shutting Victoria down on Tuesday night indicates that he wasn't targeting her until after this point (surely leading her on a bit would make it easier to lure her away from the party days later?)

Yeah, this. It's frustrating how little we learn, and how little sense the little we do learn makes at times about the operational reality of their Dark Room shenanigans.

But between the letter you mentioned (Jefferson shutting Nathan down or out, Nathan desperate to make it up to him), and the sloppiness/opportunism of Kate's abduction (that mirrors Chloe's), it seems possible that Nathan both targeted and executed her.

But I agree it's more likely Jefferson had his eyes on Kate, had been planning to do her at some point, and Nathan just saw his chance at that one party. Whether Nathan slipped the drug into her drink herself or not, the fact that he later hastily had to get more drugs from Frank alone is proof to me that Jefferson was only called into the whole thing later. Surely Jefferson wouldn't plan half a year after his last victim to then have lacking amounts of anesthetics (for a girl of Kate's stature, at that). Jefferson's been doing this shit for a while, he would not tolerate these amounts of sloppiness - let alone ~plan~ for them. Videos of his victims fucked up on drugs, people seeing Nathan leave with her, ordering Frank to come out to the shed?

Chloe doesn't fit what Jefferson was after. The whole "loss of innocence" thing. He didn't know Chloe until Episode 4 and after he reads her Blackwell file he's not impressed and just insults her when talking to Max.
Drugging Chloe was all Nathan trying to do his own thing to either prove to himself that he can do it, or to show Jefferson that he's a worthy assistant. Nathan figured Chloe was no stranger to dangerous things so if something bad did happen it would just be written off as her own fault.

On the topic of Rachel; she also does not fit what Jefferson was after. I think Jefferson was just using her as a willing model and seeing how far she would go for a shot at being famous (And who better to launch your career than an already well known photographer?) Judging by the difference of quality in the photos of Rachel and Chloe, I do think Jefferson was involved with Rachel and was using the camera while he let Nathan do all the drugging. Which is why Rachel woke up- Nathan fucked up- and then either panicked and gave her more or was told by Jefferson to just kill her since she knew too much. In the end he still blames it all on Nathan he would still be technically telling the truth.

The three people we know that were drugged and woke up were Rachel, Chloe, and Kate. Which were all given not enough of a dose to knock them out long enough, all three of these drugging were supposedly by Nathan so it suggests to me that his failures were really starting to piss of Jefferson. So that, plus any resistance he gave when he found out Victoria was next, was what made Jefferson decide to kill him.

When it comes Nathan and Jefferson, it's not puppet/master. It's accomplices where they both contribute, even though Nathan's a liability at numerous times. Jefferson because he's insane and thinks what he's doing is "art", and Nathan because he's sick, likes that kind of thing, and has fooled himself into believing that when things go right nobody gets hurt.

Also, I can't quite remember what Jefferson says, but aren't we told that Rachel was kidnapped/drugged entirely by Nathan in an attempt to impress Jefferson? In this case, we'd have Rachel and Chloe both being clear Nathan targets, and Kate's being at least partially botched by Nathan. So yeah, I think it's entirely reasonable to suggest that Nathan might have just drugged Kate of his own accord, then brought Jefferson in after the fact. And given that this would have been the second time Nathan had done this (to Jefferson's knowledge - he doesn't know about the Chloe attempt), it would be good grounds to finally cut Nathan off, as the cut Ep5 letter suggested.

On the other hand, we also know that Jefferson is still active. Whether Nathan was involved in the planning or not, we know that Jefferson DOES happily take Victoria from the Vortex Club party in Episode 4. And he does this despite all the other shit going on ... which you could also argue is sloppy. In fact, undeniably so, given that both Max and Victoria properly wake up in the Dark Room. Max already knew too much, she was never going to leave alive ... but Victoria probably could have been released like most of the previous girls ... if only she had remained properly sedated.

Absolutely. First of all, she is an odd victim anyway. We know there's more to her, but just surficially she is not his typical victim at all. I agree that Nathan didn't know Rachel is dead. I could see it being that Jefferson had to dose Nathan himself when he started panicking and that's why there's photos of the two of them laying in the junkyard. By that point Rachel is dead and Nathan is sedated and will not have any memory of what happened. As far as he knows, they did a drugged photoshoot with Rachel (Which even Chloe doesn't see outside the realm of possibility, although that may have also been the final stages of denial that Rachel's really gone) and she was paid/ released to go wherever she wanted.
Then even if Nathan has free access to the Dark Room and the binders, as long as there's nothing that makes clear Rachel is dead, Nathan would just think it was a part of the planned shoot. Which is why he's surprised and happy for the brief second he thinks Max is Rachel, it's dispelling any fears that he was lied to and that Rachel has returned.
His discovery that Rachel really was dead may also have been what kicked Nathan in the ass and made him realize that he has killed someone and Jefferson lied to him about it.

Yeah, I've argued in the past too that it's realllly fuggin suspicious for a teacher to be meeting with a student near midnight (after curfew) for something that could otherwise be done during a lunch break (looking at her portfolio). It's easy to miss, but in the scene when Chloe jumps Max on the front lawn, the light to the photography room IS on. Given that they're just standing in plain view of the window while having a discussion, it's possible that Jefferson just saw them out the window, and aborted his further plans.

I think the photos of her paint this picture: Nathan gets her to the Dark Room, somehow (they were friends of sorts, maybe they even hung out there?), drugs her, takes the shots. He fucks up the dosage and she wakes up and finds herself tied up, is scared and furious. Nathan gives her another dose, this time too much. Jefferson walks in on this, sees what's going on, maybe Nathan is freaking already. Maybe Nathan even called Jefferson since he was freaking out. Jefferson assesses the situation, drugs Nathan. The following shots are better, Jefferson presumably having taken them. Then poses and shoots Nathan with Rachel in the junkyard, for artistic and blackmail/scapegoat purposes. Tells him he paid and sent her off the next day.

Nathan only later realizing she really did die that night when he finds her dug up in the junkyard (either he saw the folders now that they had been thrown on the table, or he had seen them before), having another freak-out and scribbling that Rachel IS here in the hideout.

I know it sounds ridiculous. But Nathan also likely knew Rachel loved Jefferson, that she had wanted to get out of Arcadia all the time. I mean, she asked that trucker one time. That could have been it, right? One moment to the next, Rachel gone. Given all that, some such story along the lines of "You are lucky Rachel loves me, I gave her money, arranged for her to get set up in L.A., gave her a contact to some agency I used to work with" or whatever could at least distantly reasonably work out? Especially considering that Jefferson is his beloved suggar daddy that Nathan did all this insane shit for to begin with, and considering that Nathan is losing his grip on reality just by nature of his illness anyway.

His "RACHEL IN THE DARK ROOM" craziness I could see arising from his uncertainty about her whereabouts. That he knows, faintly remembers, that something awful must have happened, that Jefferson is lying... But pushing that aside, in denial both for the sake of his relationship with Jefferson, his own sanity, his conscience? The "RACHEL" scribblings being periods where all that shit breaks through to him. And again, it could also explain his relationship with David better, and why David didn't look into him, Nathan supplying him with (obviously limited, so as to not incriminate himself) intel and sincerely tasking him with finding Rachel (making David believe Nathan really doesn't have to do with her disappearance).

I think that deep down both Chloe and Nathan knew that Rachel's disappearance only meant one thing. They just didn't want to accept it because for Chloe it meant another person she loved died, and for Nathan it meant he killed/help killed someone. Someone he considered his friend.
The six months with no closure was getting to them both. With Chloe she was on a quest to find Rachel and up until the final moments of that quest she had hopes she would find her alive. With Nathan his mental illness grew and lead to outbursts, the RACHEL IN THE DARK ROOM drawing, and the RACHEL IS HERE inside the junkyard clubhouse.
They were both in denial because they didn't have all the facts and because they didn't want to face what the facts they did have were pointing to.

We've had conversation here before about how they are similar, how... ironic? it is that they end up being the pivot for it all, that moment in the bathroom that neither of them really wanted, but did want somehow, in the context of the "perfect storm" their lives and personalities represent, "blue and red" colliding, warm and cold, creating an actual storm - tornado.

But that's getting more abstract. And if anything, this kind of plays into Renderfriend's side of the argument. Since this denial is such a great narrative theme, such a great piece of characterization to have brought up for Nathan, why didn't they make it more clear that he didn't know? Maybe they are geniuses of the subtle, but really the only thing we have as a real pointer is his reaction in the Diner...

Anyway, I'm just saying it is not entirely impossible (and not enitrely unreasonable... ;;), that Nathan did not have certainty about Rachel's death.

One thing I will say though was how poignant the simple "I WANT TO DIE" note found in the junkyard was because it could easily been written by Nathan or Chloe. Nathan's madness beginning to consume him since he keeps going along with things he knows are wrong, and Chloe just giving up which is why she puts herself in dangerous situations.

I don't agree with Chloe being suicidal. I'm more the type of person to read into Chloe's denial of Rachel's death primarily her own personal problems, her deep-down knowledge that Rachel 1. was not in love with her, 2. even if she was, would not have been able to heal her, that her love wouldn't have been enough, 3. was not the "angel" she thinks of her as (certainly a close and good friend, but they were not even near what her and Max become) and 4. ...was simply not Max.

I think this is what Chloe's denial pertains more to: that Rachel was not the real deal, their visions of the future just daydreams, tied by a certain caring friendship, by moments of shared carelessness and fun, but not much more than that; sweet distraction and sexy delusion. A futile dream of running away and being able to leave her past demons behind.

And that's why she can in the end deal with Rachel's death too without becoming suicidal as a result. Because it was always about Max. It had taken Max to make her laugh and cry like she used to, Max to love and be loved. To face her demons, start to overcome them, truly heal, "be saved".

That said, it could have been Nathan. Getting into fanfiction territory here again, but there's two scenarios: one where he did know Rachel was dead. Or one where he at least suspected she was, and roamed the junkyard (either because he'd seen the pictures Jefferson had taken of them there or because he'd hung out with Rachel there, it reminded him of her?). Anyway, in both cases the hideout could have been where he had his frustrated maniac periods, scribbling shit like "I WANT TO DIE" - the Rachel (un)certainty and his illness driving him insane. That he went there to act out his pent up craziness.

I don't think Chloe was ever outright suicidal. She would never try to do anything to harm herself intentionally, but she would do things without regard to her safety and didn't care what happened. Which she realized was wrong when Nathan pulled the gun on her and she realized she didn't want things to end like that.

Chloe handled William's death very badly because nobody was there for her and because she looked for reasons to blame everyone so she could place the blame somewhere. She started turning to different vices to make up for the emptiness but then Rachel showed up and made her happy. This is where I think the "She saved my life" and "She was my angel" stuff comes in. Rachel turned Chloe away from a bad path and gave her something to focus her energy on and be happy about. She showed her life could be good despite past losses.
Chloe handles Rachel's disappearance poorly because, again, nobody was there for her. The hardest thing for her was thinking that Rachel was in trouble and being hurt that entire time.

But she will make it through discovering that Rachel is dead, and will do so without becoming any worse. Because this time she has so many people there for her: Max, Joyce, David, and Max's parents. Chloe realized that people do care about her and that her overall view on life has changed, thanks to Max.

There was a time after Rachel disappeared and before Max returned, and even if Chloe had the vague knowledge that Rachel was not her angel, there were certainly dark times there. Not outright suicidal, always having that endearing optimistic energy of hers, dealing with the shit she's handed with humor and sarcasm, surviving, but definitely having moments where she would at least write out something like "I WANT TO DIE", if with a bit of punk music in the background and feeling particular edgy that day.

Anyway, the dynamic between her, Rachel, Max and the respective circumstances of their lives is both heartbreakingly terrible and beautiful at the same time. Would have been great to see them together.

I can't say this isn't a somewhat understandable stance.

Maybe with the distinction for me personally that I could see him make it in the Sacrifice Arcadia timeline. We've talked at lengths about this, but bottom-line there is a chance he survived in this reality, and I have hope for him. Well, more hope than in the other timelines, anyway. He revolted against Jefferson here, however weak that revolt ended up being. He defied Jefferson, even if only in cowardly doing not much more than warning Max. Either way, Jefferson gets busted, Nathan confronts himself at the prospect of dying, and accepts that death in remorse, in hating what he'D done. A sign that his "good" side, the revolting side has a winning moment here. A weak, cowardly and silent win, but a win nonetheless. So if he survives here, that's one reason to be hopeful for.

In the Sacrifice Chloe ending however, I really think he's a lost cause. He went insane with guilt over having killed Rachel (or potentially even over only the suspicion of having killed her). In this reality, not only is there Rachel... now there's Chloe too. He killed another person, this time even more gruesomely. If David doesn't beat him to death once he enters the bathroom, I can only really see Nathan hanging himself in his cell at some point.

He has mental issues, and they've been getting worse ... but he's otherwise highly functioning. He just isn't getting the help he needs, he's being (partially-) manipulated by Jefferson, he's abusing drugs/alcohol, he has his massive rich-boy I-run-this-town ego, etc. And he's carrying an awful lot of guilt about everything - especially the Rachel stuff. He's just majorly in over his head at this point, and has had nobody to turn to for at least the last 6 months.

I don't think there's anything that proper care/treatment can't address and/or help him manage. I'm not sure he'll ever be "fit" to release without massive conditions (after all, he did willing want to partake in the Dark Room druggings/kidnappings, he essentially murdered Rachel, etc), he *is* a properly dangerous criminal regardless of anything else. But I'm not sure it's a "he's totally fucked, just end him" situation.

I have hope for him too. That he can at least work to get the proper help with his mental issues and if he truly wants to get better then he can fight for it. He knows he's done awful things and hurt a lot of people, some he can never even offer an apology to, but for those that are still alive he can show how remorseful he is by trying to be better and accepting how he wronged them.
At least that's how I see things. He is no doubt an extremely troubled individual and his situation is very complicated. But he does have a few true friends that could give him hope and inspiration to get better. I'm normally not one for tragedy, at least not in LiS, and I do see that "he's 100% doomed" is not a valid stance either. Realistically, there are ways there, treatment possibilities, a judicative situation that does not see him get fucked for the rest of his life.

But with Nathan, I have always been inclined and even preferred to think of him as the one truly tragic character in LiS. Maybe with Rachel as a distant second.

How he died in that storm timeline, alone, afraid, in shame, regret, remorse. But how he also embraced that death, narrative tragedy and personal tragedy harmonizing. That felt right to me. People failed or abused him, a lot of shit in his life went wrong, there is that perfect storm into madness feeling to it. But he is also at fault himself; he is what then, the eye of the storm? And it's kind of great that he in the end sees that, and decides that the perfect storm has to be thought to its proper end, and the end can only be his death. It makes sense. It's not a proud death either, him staying off-screen for the entire last episode representing how ashamed he is of himself - he can't show his ugly fat to the world anymore. But it's a death he embraces, that he thinks he deserves, even if there is a part of him that does not deserve it and knows it too, but is too far gone. A perfectly tragic death - a personal tragedy, a narrative tragedy, a "cinematographical" tragedy (people had wanted to see him again, but he plays no role at all anymore).

I think there's beauty in it. Whether that's artistical beauty (intended or not), or a more general beauty. Like I said in some other post earlier, there's the idea that this death was salvation for Nathan, and that in accepting it was not merely a surrender, but a triumph too: maybe he wasn't strong enough to revolt against himself and prevent himself from doing all that shit he knew was bad. Maybe he didn't get the help it had needed for him to do that. Maybe Jefferson prevented him in one way or another, deliberately or not, from it. But here is one moment where he seems to be strong enough to revolt against himself and accept death at least at the hands of someone else.

That death itself being the price he pays for all that he has done, but a sort of winning price too. Accepting death is pretty much the ultimate act of showing remorse, it's obviously his good side coming through in the end. And so finally, he gets to have quiet. It's still a horrible thing, but he gets to die with a bit of clarity, lucidity, a bit of self-respect that he gains from that introspection. Not putting a bullet through his head in one of his crazed meltdowns, but a quiet and conscious death. One that he embraces. The only silver lining to it he could have ever hoped for, maybe a small smile tugging faintly at his lips.

As for her smoking. As other people have mentioned, she is not a heavy smoker by any means. We never see her smoke once, and the week obviously has a lot of nicotine crave-inducing shit going on.

As an ex-smoker, I also agree with >>148764348. There's a romance to smoking. The body movements, smell, the movements of the smoke, having to go outside, having to take a break. Little timeouts that non-smokers just don't give themselves. It's rationally stupid. But that's exactly what romance is, I suppose.

I wouldn't make her stop smoking.
