some code progress for better sounds.

I think I have found the simplest way to maintain audio files that doesn't result in bugs.

stop audio at the start so that repetitive sounds don't overlap and cause issues with music. Made my own global to control mute because game makers mute function is kinda bad.

Have an int dx to represent your player's direction and switch it to 1 or -1 depending on what direction they're moving in on the ground. Have a bollean isGrounded and only change dx if isGrounded is true.

I downloaded Unity because I want to make a fightan gaem to learn how to make a better fightan gaem.

I have two major roadblocks though.

How should I handle how characters flip to face each other? I was thinking of having an object that compares the x values on the transform for the two characters, and flip the sprites if p1 is on the right and p2 is in the left. Is there a different/better way I should do this?

How should I handle inputs for special moves? Like how you do down, down-forward, forward and lunch to throw a fireball as Ryu.

Boy an I glad you asked.
Unsurprisingly, he's a great dev.
You should know him already.

Frankly, he's one of the greatest.
And his games are superb.
Luckily, he's still working in the industry.
Like any other great individual, he deserves all the fame he has.
Of course, he doesn't make games alone.
Undoubtedly, th team he works with is also deserving of praise.
Truth be told though, it's thanks to him that the games are so good.

4 all of you who still don't recognize him that man's name is Todd Howard, you better remember him now.

I'd like to incorporate a walljump at some point, using the opposite directional key, and I feel like my programming skill is way too low to give the player slight influence, I can only do full movement or none.
>>
>>148616183
Sure? I mean, I plan on making a silly platformer or something to get the basics down, but damn if I can't stop thinking about how I want to make a fun fighting game.

We all do.
But it's a tedious fucking genre to do.
Just flesh out all your oc and why your fightan' will be better or add something of worth to all the other fightans' out there.

Or if you really want to, keep it as a side-project and just slowly iterate/improve it while you take breaks from your main projects.

GM is a good engine that has proven itself with many successes, but if you're more interested in the programming aspect of gamedev I'd recommend libgdx, monogame or even LOVE. Godot is fairly new and I've heard good things about it, but I don't have enough experience with it to feel confident in making a recommendation.

Alright thanks it seems like GM:S is the way to go. I would like to learn how to program so I might mess around with lib, I might be too dumb though idk.
>>
>>148623785
GM won't teach you to program.
GM will teach you to hack together code to make a game.

If your goal is to program & make a game. Study a language and then pick a library.

If you just want to make a game, go GM.

Why isn't this working in c#

public PoopClass {get; set;}

...later in the code

PoopClass.poopAmount = 1; // Error here

But if i change public PoopClass {get; set;} to public PoopClass; it works fine

What the shit? The error says it's not a variable.
I need to have that {get; set;} there because reasons

Got some great ideas for a game but it takes a shit load of coding before I can test out the implementation.

Been programming weekends here and there but making little progress. I work as a programmer so just feel worn out coming come after programming for 8 hours and never feel like making progress.

Got about 6 months of living expense in cash and 3 years if I cash out of my equities when they're at all time high now.

Looks like it might be time to bite the bullet and quit my job to dev full time. If I don't succeed before I run out of money I'll just kill myself.

What's the best way to make vector animations nowadays?

Drawing in Illustrator + animating frame by frame in Photoshop?
Drawing in Illustrator, animating in After Effects and then exporting as .gif?
>>
>>148632950
>exporting as .gif
do not ever use gif in games, it's too shit to use.
If you're doing frame by frame animation you'll want to export animation sheets or export the animation frames as separate files.
If you want to do bone animation you'll probably want to do that in-engine because most engines have built in ways to handle 2D bone animation and it will be smoother than frames.

Depends what kind of vector animation you're wanting to do. I used to use Flash to draw everything and then you can export sprite sheets or sequences with transparency, which makes it super easy to import into Game Maker: However, digital painting in Flash is super limited, so if you're going for that kind of style, you'll need to use Photoshop.

A lot of time has passed since i last visited agdg. For some time now i was itching to make a tower defence game and finally i have some free time on my hands. Space jam seems to be ideal for this type of game so i decided to join. I will be using unity for this project. First i want to create a space background so for some time now i have been experimenting with shuriken to create particle effect that looks like nebula. The webm shows what I got so far. Do you guys think it looks ok? Also i woud be interested to hear how others contestants make their space background.

GM:S dev here.
Is it sane to structure my game like this?
>Player and enemy ships both inherit from "ship"
>Can have 1 to N weapons, which are actual (invisible) objects stuck to the ship
>An enemy ship's weapons are autonomous and fire whenever
>All weapons inherit from "weapon"; they have default properties that can be overridden by the ship they're set up on
>All projectiles inherit from "projectile"; similarly, properties can be overridden by the weapon object firing them

This means I could have a "damage" variable on a projectile changed by "my_projectile_damage" on the weapon firing it, and changed again with "my_weapon_damage" from a specific ship.

I feel like this could devolve into spaghetti very quickly.

Unity for example if your play with a tight loop it can be hard to get it to stop. You can lose project settings, but your IDE will still be functional.

You can use Monodevelop's Attach to Process feature to edit variables while the program is running, allowing you to escape infinite loops by inducing a runtime error or otherwise changing the value that's causing the loop.

My grid movement works perfectly with 5x5 tiles. But as soon as I change it to 5x6, if I press the down button it moves diagonally instead of vertically, and sometimes I can't move horizontally. Here's the code:

GameObject[,] grid = new GameObject[gridxtiles,gridytiles];
for (int x = 0; x < gridxtiles; x++) {
for (int y = 0; y < gridytiles; y++) {
grid [x, y] = GameObject.Find ("tile (" + curnumber + ")");
curnumber++;
grid2 = grid;
}
}

The movement just adds 1 to x or y.

Anyone help?

I hate myself and my life and I want to commit suicide.

I've started to play around with blender, here is my plan
>Make rocks, basic walls, and some metal boxes
>Learn how to texturize it
>Build a small "collection/bank" of basic stuff
>Import models into unity
>Put my models out on a desert map, do the basic leveldesign
>Much later = Get backup from programming friends, add some weapons, projectiles

The game is going to be simple as dogshit, topographical view, shooting monsters.

So I dont even know what I'm trying to say? Does blender work for Unity games? Which format do I save it in? Since it's topographical, should the models be super low poly?

Please help me with something i'm scared and i want to die
>>
>>148638921
Buying the engine doesn't have to do anything with making a good game but its about the appearances. Its not even really just a Unity thing itself: people are used to expecting shit after seeing a default splash screen because usually people who don't bother changing it when they have the opportunity are just making absolute trash.

It's not about bothering to. Changing it would cost money. Not even a one-time fee either, you need to pay monthly for the privilege of not having that splash screen.
>>
>>148639084
Should still look nice (not super low poly) but you dont need to put as much into the fine detail unless you're having up close zoom ins for some reason. Given computing power, there's no real reason to not go all-out with the models though, esp. since thatll give you experience in making them and you can use that skill for other things outside of the game (ie making models for new games, or using that skill to make money from applying it as a profession

As long as your textures look good you can cover up it should work. Though you could even go for an "ARTSTYLE" approach and make it super shiny simple colors, make a futuristic shooter where you jump from platform to platform shooting nontextured shiny metallic guys and it could sell well because it'd be "TRUE INDIE"

That'd even save you from having to make sensible level design, just scatter shit in space, gravity need not apply. Make an interesting backdrop and some "2DEEP4U" story about killing the concept of your past self or some shit.

Is it wise to have one script handle most of the logic?
>>
What do you guys think of the idea of "Spirit Experience" system for a roguelike where your highest experience value on history is recorded, and any other characters you have gain a bonus experience modifier until you hit that S.EXP value?

ie,

>Soul Experience is 40k
>New character gains a +4x modifier to exp (+1x per 10k distance)
>EXP bonus wears off the closer you get to your last high score
>this allows you to get an even higher experience score easier, which allows for faster progression through levels

But I believe stuff like movement and attacking, for example, should be separated into their own scripts if you're going for an ECS approach.

Alright, the Function Chips can now assign projectile types as well. Currently the type is mainly cosmetic, but eventually the different shot types will have advantages and disadvantages.

Ice will rarely overheat your blaster, and can freeze enemies, but is pretty weak in terms of damage.

Fire overheats your gun quickly if you don't have a good cooling chip, but will deal additional burn damage to vulnerable enemies.

Plasma has a high heat cost as well, but the ability to penetrate enemies is pretty nice.

no

if you're afraid of the player grinding 2 win, either make level capped, with the cap becoming higher as you advance in the plot due to events, or make the enemy exp gain scale (down to zero) with player level, so you can't grind in the same spot forever.

Measure loneliness. If someone lives in an area with low population density, they're more eager to reproduce and/or find a settlement to live in. If someone lives in an area with high population density, they develop a distaste for human contact and swear oaths of celibacy. If the population around them keeps increasing after that, then they have a chance of turning terrorist and blowing up the city.

Also, these should be long-term changes in their personality, so you get people who are shaped by their life experiences.

So, one of the non-obvious things is, a component can be either a property inherent to the entity, or a transient piece of state calculated from other inputs. A common example is how you might have a Velocity component and a PositionInWorld component, and there's a system that reads from one and modifies the other. But then maybe you also have a PositionOnScreen component, and there's a system that writes the on-screen coords for any visible entity, and removes/disables them for anything that isn't visible. (This is exactly what my game does; I use the visibility check for several other purposes.)

Every system should have a loop that essentially checks every entity for the components it wants, and operates only on entities with that particular combination of components. (In ECS parlance, this is the system's "aspect.") In most cases, you want to just skip entities that don't have all the right components, but sometimes you only want to look at entities that are missing certain components, or only check for the presence/absence of a component in a particular section of the loop. Depending on how your component storage is set up, checking for each component can be kind of a pain in the ass, or result in some boilerplate. There are a couple ways to solve that though.
>>

The outermost layer of your main loop should do something like this:

- Calculate the timestep for this frame
- Invoke EVERY system, in order, passing the timestep and World object as arguments
- If any of them raised a signal saying the game should end, then quit

And that's it. If there are systems that only run sometimes, they decide that in their own run() method (or whatever you called it). If there's data that needs to be passed from one system to another and there's no particular Entity that "owns" that data, then create a component just for holding it and put it in a throwaway Entity that won't be rendered (because it doesn't have a graphic or a position) and gets deleted at the end of the frame.

Ah, yeah, in an Actor-model-style engine, that's exactly how it would work, and in my experience they are indeed pretty hard to understand and keep organized.

By "ECS" I assumed you meant a modern DOD-style approach, where your Entity object is just a UUID, and all components are stored in a World object containing an array or hashmap for every component type. This makes writing systems a lot easier, actually, because for each type of component you're working with, you only fetch the storage once at the top of your run() method, get a list of keys from any of those, and then use that as your list of Entities to examine.

You misunderstood me. I didn't say Pokemon GO was popular because of AR, just that it would easier to hype something AR right now _even if_ AR is peripheral to GO's popularity. It's how hype cycles work.

That said, I disagree with you. I think that exploring the your real-life surroundings is a major part of Pokemon GO's appeal. Ingres, while no worldwide phenomenon, had a non-trivial following before. Maybe this aspect of the game should be called geo-something (like geocaching and similar GPS-based entertainment) instead of AR.

DOD is data-oriented design. It's where you design your engine's data management around avoiding cache misses. See pic related.

The Actor model is a pretty old way of working with concurrent control flow, and a progenitor of OOP as we know it. The basic idea is, you have a bunch of processes with "inboxes," and they can send messages to each other. Each actor can just ignore any messages it doesn't understand. If you've ever worked with Erlang, that's pretty much the core concept there.

I haven't done much with Unity but IIRC it's closer to the Actor model than a modern data-oriented ECS.

I wouldn't even call pokemon "AR". AR would imply that it interacts with the environment in some way. Simply drawing a model on top of the camera image isn't AR. I mean, fuck, it doesn't even attempt to give the pokemon an actual position in 3D space, it kind of just glides all over the place and you can't walk around it and view it from different angles or anything.

I had actually already thought about doing stuff like that, lol. I hadn't thought of that specifically, but I had thought maybe they'd walk over and roll your body over with their foot, or put a laser in your head or something.

I'm a big fan of games that do after-death stuff like that, like Arkham's game-over-taunting screens and such.

You split into your light and dark selves. You must now finish the game as your light self while your dark self tries to hinder your progress. If you split again, you become your REALLY light self and your Light-but-with-a-bad-boy-streak self and so on and so forth.

If the game isn't tile-based, then it's not very likely that the player will manage to hit the wall EXACTLY diagonally.
That being the case, the player should move along whichever side of the wall he's closer to.
If he DOES manage to hit it exactly diagonally, just pick a random side of the wall for him to move along.

Alchemy is a fun skill. It could involve a base set of ingredients together for various effects, but you have a limited number of base ingredients per battle and gathering a new one takes a turn.

the real question is whether it's possible to make a fun 2D sonic game

you can't see ahead so any real speed sections have to be on rails

3D sonic went wrong by trying to be a scripted movie, and had shit fucking controls and camera angles which they never improved, ever

unleashed daytime and generations modern were bearable because they were basically racing games, colors was bearable because it was pretty much 2D 90% of the time

2006 came the closest to being an actually good 3d sonic, but being rushed killed it because of bugs and a furfag storyline

so basically good controls, good camera, good level design

that's literally it, that's how to make a good 3D sonic, team sonic is simply incompetent and have been for 20 years so that's why it seems like 3d sonic is just a bad idea in general

check the sonic GDK green hill demo for something that's closer to the real thing

please don't steal my good 3D sonic idea ;_;

Maybe I should have given Krita a little bit more time, and I know that MyPaint lacks some features, like selecting and cutting, but it's just what it is: a drawing tool. Krita felt like a PS or a Gimp with drawing tablet support. When I want to draw, I just want to do that, and MyPaint basically gives you a huge canvas, some pencil tools and that's it. If you put it into full screen mode, your monitor just becomes this huge paper you can draw on without any UI. Maybe the problem was with me, but I couldn't even find how to save transparent PNGs in Krita, yet in MyPaint, it asks you right away if you want to have a transparent or a colored background. When I want additional editing, I can do that in other programs which I'm already familiar with.

Easy. A "Jumpscare" meter that fills up over time. When it's full, the player can push a button to get a jumpscare and be scared. The tutorial I made the last couple of days include a little bit of animating (much simpler stuff, though):

Yeah, I never use keyframes, because I'm stubborn idiot.
Drew that directly in MS Paint, with zero testing before the final stage when I put the frames together in Gimp to create a gif.
Need to get my shit together and make a properly keyframed walk cycle soon.

Pic related should probably also be redrawn

well i dunno. i dont think it will be scary. you know the killer is another player, its predictable and human. at least with an AI, its spooky cause you dont know and project an identity onto it. imagine amnesia with a player controller monster, that shit wouldn't be scary - it turns into a tactics game. horror is in the mind, not the gameplay which is why horror games have such shit gameplay or the gameplay is abstracted into meta-game shit like map navigation or item management
>>
>>148656252
I cant into AS3, i wanted to move to gamemaker because a friend of mine brought the pro license and didnt use it.

>>148657702
when the player gets too close or killer spends too much time fucking around let the AI take killer's role

> Any ideas on how to make the player gradually speed up to a run and then slow down when the key is released?

This shit is the worst thing to happen to modern AAA games. They favour animation and realism over gameplay so your character moves another 1-2 meters after you release the button.

tried first time with isometric
i guess im making super sonic 3d blast

this is for space jam. i like to try things ive never done before...how should speed be handled when going up and down stairs?
>>
>>148658090
option 1: define the path separately, use it twice

option 2: record the first path, make object 2 follow the recording

option 3: make the simulation deterministic and the starting conditions identical

maybe if you're a nostalgiafag, games without momentum feel disgusting and are harder to control
>>
>>148657880
Have the events of this secret thing going on all the time. There's no specific start point, but the AI for the secret faction should be able to tell when something's wrong, respond accordingly, and eventually start singling you out. It can be as simple as a stray arrow flying from off camera hitting you, only to find a shadowy figure off in the distance disappearing into the brush. To something as grand as you are going up a hill at night and you hear metallic clanking and whatnot in the distance. You stop and look, and see at the top of the hill a whole army heading your way. They stop, and the man in the middle holds up his weapon, lowers it, and you see the light of the moon reflect off his blade that he's pointing at you.

Start making people disappear, weather changes, longer nights, shit moving around in the darkness, physical effects to prove the presence of strangers in areas that are supposed to be abandoned, mysterious people off in the distance observing you, strangers watching you in towns, sounds slowly fade into silence, etc.
>>
>>148657924
Thank you for the tutorial.
>>
>>148658354
>are harder to control

Maybe if you're a tard. Your character goes exactly where you want them to. That's the point.
>>
>>148658462
the human brain is wired to understand physics, objects without momentum are non-physical, and therefore harder to predict
>>
>>148658124
A group of soldiers disconnected with the rest of the world in the middle of the desert try to not to lose their minds while exploring the desert itself and trying to complete missions set by HQ. It's more like Oregon Trail than Darkest Dungeon, but I'd love a narrator like in DD.
>>
>>148657701
v = velocity
a = acceleration
v is 0 when idle. When the key is held down, v += a. When the key is released, v -= a. Then just have a check to make sure you don't go over maximum speed or under 0. a can be whichever value, the bigger it is the faster you accelerate. So for a racing game for exemple different cars would have a different acceleration value.

>>148658032
That's because AAA games have a terrible acceleration rate so whenever you're trying to start or stop moving it feels like you're moving in molasse. This shit didn't start with AAA, even Mario Bros on NES had this.
>>
>>148658010
I don't know anything about gamemaker, but I switched from as2 to as3 and it took me about a month.
As3 is similar to C# and many other languages as well.
But learning the interface is a bitch. Linking images and having them not work because you forgot some shitty little extra thing. Fuck As3
Maybe you should try Gamemaker.

I tried to install this google picture algorithm thing but I am just too dumb. (you know the one that creates those horrific pictures made out of cats and dogs)

I wanted to create a high res texture of jupiter using a lower res texture, scale it up and let the algorythm create small details in the scaled up picture (I dont know if you understand or if it even makes sense)

Anyway, I couldnt find a high resolution picture with resolution as big to my liking. The best I could find is 4096x2048, which is still too small for what I want to do.

Maybe it would be best to just try some auto generating planet shader or something, but it should look like jupiter. I just thought the google image algorithm thing might have worked(or not)

Sorry for blogpost.

>the human brain is wired to understand physics

No it's not, do you believe that if we were born in a world where the laws of physics don't apply we would find it odd that moving objects don't have momentum? We're not wired that way, we're just used to it

it's a game that is against violent video games, blames the player directly for following the only scripted path possible, while simultaneously being the most generic and dull violent shooter humanly possible

not even aeleweis himself could tip this hard. at least gears of war knows exactly what it is, and isn't a copy of another game

so is hotline miami also pretentious, because they're pretty similar in themes?

i dont think you really know what pretentious means, i think you just read it on 4chan and started overusing it as a nebulous "cover all" term to critique anything that isn't a complete copy/paste of most games

play some indie "art games" and you might understand pretension. spec ops executes on its themes brilliantly, and theres little to no pretense, it also functions as a decent cover shooter with a fresh setting and atmosphere

Anyone know of an easy way to make a beam weapon that can be aimed 360 degrees and cuts off when it collides with another object?

I tried making one with GMLs draw even and while it looks good making it so it stops drawing when colliding with things, and making that look good seems like more effort than it should be
