w-will you senpaitchis accept me?
I only played the old games back in the day, what has changed since then except for superior graphics?
>>
>>148626092
Nope. Do it fucking late. It's JUST about possible to do it on ballistics but I really wouldn't.

Bring a lot of Combat-Protocol Specialists if you do. You probably won't have Bluescreen rounds at that point but it's recommended.
>>
>>148626184
Wait, but I thought Shen's robits fall off really hard in the late-game?
>>
>>148626170
Quite a lot. Movement are double-action based instead of granular TUs now. Skills increase set amounts per experience-based level up with special perks per level instead of action-based skill-training. You can now customize every bit of your soldiers like paper dolls. Since there are less troopers (up to six from four) each loss is more devastating and changes the dynamic of gameplay much more than in 94com. The GeoScape is much less analog and much more flowchart-based.

>>148626271
Yes, which is why SPARKs are shit. You get a free SPARK with the mission but they still cost the equivalent of four Rookies and two Heavy Weapons and some alloys.

There is ONE viable build right now (cone-fire powered weapons are actually REALLY USEFUL on a properly perked tank SPARK, much more than a Volatile Mix heavy) but they aren't really good otherwise.
>>
>>148626271
To be clear, you do it when you have mags.
>>
>>148626170
Give a hint at the general. I would imagine a lot of long term generals descend into shitposting from time to time. This one isn't any exception.

In regards to games, depends on which ones. The latest iterations have stripped out, or down, a number of features.
>Don't build multiple bases any more
>Inventory management was streamlined to picking one or two items to bring along and what armor to use (all weapons/armor in the squad upgrade at once when completing research)
>Air game reduced, or removed
>Base defenses mostly gone outside of special circumstances
>Instead of having a number of points to dedicate to movement and actions, you have two 'units', and each one (or both) gets eaten up by any action (such as move [set distance] -> shoot)
That's not to say the new games are bad by any means. They're just different, as less management means you can focus a lot more on the what remains instead of having to worry too much about macro gameplay.

Like >>148626556 said, they did add the ability to customize soldiers as well, so you can make your squad feel a lot more personal. You have to worry more about each loss as well, as they noted, which means the game doesn't end up being a meat grinder that you throw rookies into.

So essentially - different. Some people are even still playing the original 94com here, or a modded version of it, but there are others playing the latest two as well.

I gotta say, taking up a position inside a darkened room can really make you appreciate the dynamic lighting in this game. I reloaded my save post-mission specifically to get another shot at screencapping this with F12, apparently trying to just use print-screen results in getting a picture of when you last alt-tabbed instead.

>>148626184
>>148626271
I managed to do it with ballistics without any losses but that was on commander, I'd wait for at least mag rifles just to be on the safe side.

Are faceless supposed to be triggering from 10-15 spaces away?
Last I played was on release and they only triggered if all other aliens are dead or if you walk ontop of them. In my last two ironmans I've lost because I somehow trigger the two faceless seemingly randomly.

Assuming you're not exagerating with the 10-15 spaces thing, then no, they aren't supposed to do that.

They sometimes trigger when you're close to them even if you don't actually go touch them, but i don't think they do from 10-15 tiles away.

Unless all the other aliens are dead, then they immediately transform.
>>
>weapon types simply displayed as 'unavailable' even though that class is flagged to be able to equip them, and said weapon can be equipped by rookies

is there some kind of retarded limit on the number of primary weapons that can be 'available' for a soldier?
>>
>>148635613
No. Some classes are borked due to mod updates and you have to go into their .ini and change a setting. I don't recall the precise setting though, sorry. Check that class's comments on the Workshop, you'll probably find people talking about it and the solution as well.

Missionposter anon returns, with a new mission (and a dope fucking Skyranger). Here's the crew we're taking out to our first Supply Raid. I've got a few new guns (Matt Hudson has Backfire, a XCOM X-9 rifle with Hangfire Propellant and I think an expanded mag; Boyd has Chuckles, an automatic shotgun with a lightweight frame and something else cool). Ben Hudson is carrying Betsy, a XCOM LMG with a mag I slapped on it. We've also got Tariq Rose, apparently some ex-ADVENT trooper who wanted the XCOM life as a rookie.

Let's see how this goes, anons.

Engaged the pods. Took a nearby building, managed to draw both pods with everyone in decent spots. CQC+Fleche did work on the viper and the sectoid, rookie was in low cover but survived the wrecker's shot, stun lancer went for the stun, hit Hudson, but didn't stun (thank the king), current projections are positive.

Don't place sharpshooters within aliens LOS

That can actually help you set up flanks by the way. Move your sniper away from the lane on which your regular troops are advancing, and when a pod is triggered, you could get flank shots with him

>Also, new mission. Neutralizing a VIP. Here's the team.
So, I loaded the mission and X2 immediately crashed. I reloaded the game, my closest autosave was about 5 minutes of dicking around earlier. I finished things up the way I did before, but I got a different council mission. I've now saved and exited, to try and figure out why it crashed to start with (also, True Concealment appears to be bugged, it's not working and I'm unclear why).

tl;dr: Technical difficulties, stand by.
>>
>>148650390
Yeah, not implying you're cheating or anything, just surprised. Your team would have been fucked for a few weeks on legendary.

Well, we're back. True Concealment still seems bugged to not work on VIP neutralization missions, but oh well. Same exact team as above (I did change out Pierce's weapon for a Magnetic Compact Carbine though, on second thought). Here's the situation, taking this roof and seeing if we can't sneak up on and murderize some ADVENT before they know we're here.

Yo /xcg/. Just picked up XCOM 2 and it just kicked my ass to the point I'm probably going to start over clean. But before I do, I was wondering- any mods you guys think are good and don't ruin the experience for a first playthrough?

Also, I remember in the first game, there were options for rookies to have more randomized stats and to mix up the skill trees, but I'm not seeing them here- do you have to beat the game to unlock them first, or are they just not available?

So I assume this is known, but if you use a ranger (or shinobi if you are on LW2 perks) in concealment to spy out an enemy patrol, then sent your sniper to long overwatch you can do the pre-release beagle trick of baiting them into your overwatch ambush on their turn. Just have your squad in position not in sight o the enemy but where they will run towards when your sniper makes the shot.

[CAN'T WAKE UP]

Seriously though, modding OpenXcom is like trying to piece together a jet engine with only a picture of the final product to guide you.

There are so many pitfalls and esoteric knowledge points behind both game mechanics and the community modding tools, it becomes psychologically draining: Did you know that armor will only take damage if it fails to stop damage? Did you also know that the amount of damage armor takes has a hardcoded limit at 10% of what passes through? Did you know that if an attack is missing some animation, the entire fucking program just shuts off without a crash screen?

... Someone calls you on the phone or away from the computer, that's it for the day; you've spoiled your focus and can't return to working on the project because you WILL come back and say "What the fuck was i doing?" while looking at a 2+ megabyte plaintext file, 3/19ths near the bottom of 2000+ lines in notepad (not wordpad) that follows specific YAML coding rules, where even A SINGLE SPACE OR PERIOD OR SEMICOLON ENTRY can cause the entire fucking thing to crash the interpreter on load-up.

I honestly have no idea how the Piratez and FMP guys managed to stomach their way through it, even with the power of mega-autism guiding them

I actually stopped playing Piratez because in a few maps the terrain was legitimately bugged out with floating bits that had no business being there.

It's a game that's been put through the wringer of a new engine, old assets, old rules, and then further tortured with seemingly ad-lib mod constraints.

It's a fucking miracle of legitimately hard work that OpenXcom works at all, to be honest.

If you do it late (advanced/elite advent) then they are fucking WORTHLESS. Maybe it's because of ABA and all other mods and shit but holy fuck I have literally now had spark1 and spark2 die on their very first op and spark3 die on his second op because he was hit twice. Once by an auto-doc MEC and once by a sectoid and gg no re. It's fucking ridiculous:
-they cost as much as >>148626556 notes
-they can't take cover
-they have on predator armor tier literally 1 more armor than a grenadier with blast padding (and if you have heavy armor item then a grenadier can have as much armor as a MEC and take cover).
-Their aim is dogshit and unless you mod-cheat you can't put accessories on their weapon
-They don't get the 2-3 grenades of a grenadier, just a single heavy weapon attack. I think, either it's one of the mods I am running or it's true in vanilla but that you can unlock a tech that may allow you more than one shot.
-You can't ever buy a new one at the black market or HQ so if you don't have one leveled up real high by mid/late game you're never ever going to have a use for one. I can either buy a high grade soldier for cheaper and quicker than a Spark and better.

I'm getting pissed how there has been literally one thing in all the DLC so far I really love and it's the fucking frost grenade. I like Firaxis, I like Solomon, and Xcom2 is a pretty solid base game but what the fuck is going on there with these DLC?

>>148698114

Makes me want to compare it with the MEC in Xcom1, the same way they made flashbangs dogshit outside of anti-psi compared to Xcom1 (-25 disorient in Xcom2, -50 in Xcom1).

http://xcom.wikia.com/wiki/MEC_Trooper
http://xcom.wikia.com/wiki/SPARK_(XCOM_2)

Base attributes:
-MEC gets either CQC damage reduction (-33%), closest enemy aim penalty and critical hit immunity from closest, platform stability or distortion field.
-All Mecs get 60% protection against critical hits
-All mecs get immunity to poison (http://xcom.wikia.com/wiki/Poison_Spit) and I am pretty sure immune to fire too.

-Spark gets overdrive with -15% aim to each shot, being cumulative (first is -15, second is -30, third is -45), shreds armor, immune to fire/poison, can hack.

So Spark has advantage with shred armor. Disadvatange (at first at least) with overdrive, cannot be healed by medkits parity with immunity. MEC gets better critical hit protection, same immunity, can be healed by medkits. Only thing else a Spark does better is it gives high cover to any friendly while distortion field is just a hit negation chance for allies.
>>
>>148698114
I'm in the exact same shoes. ABA and a ton of other shit, and I haven't even gone and done Shen's mission because I know it's just going to be a waste of time as I'm not going to be using SPARKs. They were decently fun in a vanilla campaign but that's long gone, something that I'm never touching again.

Even back there, in pressure situations they would routinely fail to perform under anything but a tank job. Garbage aim, no special equipment, special abilities being vary lackluster in a variety of ways, it's just an all around shit show.

>>148698823
I miss MECs. Their aim tended to be equally as dogshit as SPARKs(outside of Jaegars anyway), but you could offset that easily with powerful tools. Take a flamethrower(or two), the KSM, tac sensors and an incendiary module and now you got a MEC with a solid job, to dismantle groups of organics and to shit on single targets with a guaranteed hit. That's just one set up.

SPARKs? No special equipment or anything, everything relied upon from the abilities, most providing either piss poor damage or not enough practical use.

Is it unfair to compare Long Dong MECs to Vanilla SPARKs? Possibly, but here's the thing. In making XCOM 2, they were obviously learning from what we liked in Long War, and took it as an inspiration. So why on earth did they not look to how MECs were handled in Long Dong?
>>
>>148698823

Also advantage spark is that it is immune to mind control or other psionic mind attacks. I'll spare the spam of comparing the rest but I think just removing that obnoxious aim disadvantage on overdrive would do wonders to make them more competitive. I can't see anything that is an actual disadvantage like that for a MEC. All their abilities were a positive, not a backhanded positive like overdrive.
>>
>>148698401
Archon ruler is such fucking bullshit. His pinions shit stunning is way too strong with the area covers and how it only takes 2 ruler reactions and happens way too often.

I'm still furious his first appearance for me was a fucking blue move from the avenger ramp on a defense mission.
>>
>>148699552

>So why on earth did they not look to how MECs were handled in Long Dong?

Because Sparks are just a cheap shit hack job they did for a DLC just because one of the first mods was "playable mecs", maybe with the expansion we'll either get useful sparks or a better class.

Could you refrain from spewing this kind of crap with no facts to back it up.
>>
>>148699552

Since you are in the same shoes as I was:

-Bluescreen and AP and magnetics and it will be almost boringly easy. I even took only 6 people (Lily and 5) instead of the 7 I had unlocked. Since the pod increase of ABA doesn't seem to apply in that DLC it was fair.

(And since I just bitched about the mecs there >>148698823 replying to your second bit): you're right on the money about how their specialized abilities made them really great.

Admittedly I am thinking more recently of LW Mecs rather than vanilla MECs, but I remember in vanilla at least they were fun and solid if not highly specialized like they were in LW. And look over their vanilla abilities and it's all pretty good if 'boring' stuff. Another advantage for spark over MEC is jetboots are pre-included without having to choose a perk & one-for-all is vs bulwark bringing one-for-all + armor in one package. Spark Repair has the potential to be better than repair servos..problem is -getting- there. Fuck, just looking at the vanilla abilities and you know maybe a spark isn't half bad - but it's damn well impossible to actually level one up in mid to late game because they are so fragile.

Also what you said at the end. Even without long dong you had at least the base class upgrade to a MEC give an influencial and always present ability that dictated your direction of the MEC.

And as long as I am bitching, I feel like "fighting against the fog of war" is a lot more of an issue in Xcom2 than it was in Xcom1. By fighting the fog of war I mean having to maneuver and move in gimmicky ways to avoid activating another pod. I'm not talking about going YOLO running into the fog of war but "if you move one tile to the left against this low fence in the middle of the road you will activate an enemy pod." but a single step to the right and you're in the clear.

I don't know what the solution is because having them stand idly by until their turn means you would slaughter them mercilessly the second you encountered them. Maybe they get -1 AP on their turn following discovery so they can still attack you but they can't get a free 2AP move on discovery and then 2action points on their turn. Or I need to install that "all pods activate on concealment break". I don't want it to be a cheat, I'm just getting bored with how the safest option is still like in Xcom1 a WW1 style "hunker down and blow up their cover and snipe them". Even doing a little tactical move of a blue move to get a flanking shot and you'll proc another pod. So 9/10 I'll aim to have a Shinobi/ranger in concealment 24/7 so I can have my sniper bait the enemy squad with a long watch shot during their turn into wasting their free move into my overwatch ambush. It's not fun, but it's a lot safer than dealing with the dogpiling of Xcom2.

Honestly the introduction of hard-timers was treating the symptom of overwatch spam and not the disease of why it was such a dominant strategy - it's because of the obscene risk of doing anything aggressive.

Yea, it really is

I honestly thought it was kind of shitty but manageable up to this point, flawless went out the god damn window when that stupid fucker walked around putting more caps in peoples asses than ferguson police.

At this point the only strategy I can think of is everyone in high cover and pray to god that I can survive for the 15 or 16 turns it will take of overcharges/hacks/zaps.

Yeah those missions go 3 ways for me :

a) pods all drop on my starting zone with a convenient elevated sniper nest, my assault just destroys everything because CCS is balanced and my sniper cleans up whatever is left alive
b) pods arrive at the other end of the map, get automatically activated and the whole thing becomes an overwatch fest
c) I spawn on a cliff and I just close my eyes and spread my legs

A gets a bit boring, but B and C are still a lot of fun, the haven usually looks like a Worms map when I'm done with it.

Shen's Last Gift is pretty good, the Sparks are fun but they start to become a bit useless during the end game, especially with mod ayys that are almost always overpowered.

Do it as early as you can. Robots are good tanks in the early game, but they get shittier in late game. I did Shen's Last Gift mission with 2 rookies and 2 liutenants (and overpowered Lily Shen obviously). One of my liutenants died, but it was worth getting Fisto.
>>
>>148753108
I'm sorry, but Tank Sparks with the Rainmaker perk are downright broken. That expanded cone and range and +2 damage? Can wreck up to a dozen guys you can't hit with Blaster Bombs/Grenades, and Sparks can get to places Grenadiers can't and survive.

That is however, their only purpose. They're a bit useless after that.
>>
>>148755878

>>148757462
The hunter protocol rank is pretty much shit no matter what you take in my opinion, Sparks don't have the aim to justify either of those.
>>
>>148757703
I honestly feel like the right tree got nerfed badly because if you give a Spark the base stats needed to make it useful, it makes base-level tank Sparks broken.
>>
>>148727064
I know that if you shot down ships trying to assault you're base, they would just keep sending a never-ending supply.

But no, I don't think it's an intended feature, for the original or the current iteration.
>>
>>148736524
I'm sure you already made you're decision, but packing it up on a terror mission is very bad for your end of month report.
>>
>>148759550
Nah it's intended behaviour. I mean it's kinda silly to think the aliens just up and forget where your base was after you shot down a single ship, naturally they're just gonna try and assault it again later on. It's not like the alien hive mind really gave a shit about it's minions dying and it had an interstellar empire worth of cloned soldier resources to spam with.
>>
>>148661401
Gassed him so hard he turned from jew to muslim.
>>
>>148759550
I don't remember it from the original either, and nor does UFOpaedia. But it's right there in the code: two places where infiltration missions are special-cased to repeat, with comments to confirm it. I can't see how that can be anything other than deliberate.

>>148760119
Infiltration (make a country cut funding), not retaliation (attack a base).
>>
>>148760119
Its not intended behavior. From your reasoning they shouldn't give up after their ground team is defeated either and should spam base defense mission till the end of time. But they do give up after beating them on the ground which means they should give up if their first ship is shot down as well. Certainly by the 5th battleship, or 10th, or whatever else after that.

The developers didn't give you base defense facilities that target ufos just to annoy you with infinite UFO raids when you actually are successful.

It's still a game first.
>>
>>148760503
Well see if you can turn it off without breaking your game. Backup your save obviously.
>>
>>148760724
Oh I can stop it easily enough. OpenXcom's save files are just YAML, so I can just remove it. Or it looks easy enough to "fix" the source, even knowing fuck all about C++.

The thing is, I don't actually want to fix it much. The countries in that region stopped funding me years ago, so I'm not really losing anything. And getting a steady supply of landed UFOs to pillage. Which is just as well given that I apparently need to scrape together 25000 (h)elerium to get to mars in this stupid mod.

But I'm still baffled as to why it's there.
>>
>>148762043
I don't know why the would implement that. Sure the campaign takes awhile, but for the most part, as long as the tech tree keeps moving I don't feel like I'm just grinding. If you actually made it all the way to the end of hte tech tree that should be good enough. I might just edit it down, I have a hard enough time finishing x-com campaigns as it is.

I need the Academy to show up right now, been on a bit of a dry spell. Some more demons would be nice too, but they are optional. Really map reliant to get the most of it out and I had plasma/archangel by the time I made one but man is this a fun build. Not sure about using it in another campaign though, marksman rifles are just really unimpressive until plasma tier and that's a long time to wait. This might just be some build I use on lategame council recruits that join at SGT or something.

There's nothing quite like turning on flight and flying just barely behind a car two muton elites are hiding behind and one shotting both with hit and run. Plays like a weird mix between a sniper and a pathfinder.

It's an old one, but hey.
>>
>>148792221
base building missions and infiltration missions are different. a country doesn't need to have revoked funding to have a base inside its borders

>>148792530
openxcom is a custom engine that runs the old game files. everything that could happen in the old dos version can happen in openxcom, except for the various bugs relating to gameplay and engine behavior which have been mercifully fixed.
HOWEVER, because the old game file had a possibly intentional oversight, Russia can not be infiltrated; therefore you can not lose the game purely through infiltrations.
Any country (including Russia) can still decide you're not doing well enough to prevent the alien threat and reduce or pull funding due to lack of activity in their region, or general lack of acceptable end-of-month score.

-1000 to -500 relative to beginner through superhuman difficulty level; an ignored terror mission is -1000 score, and a terror mission where you simply "land and leave" always means every civilian on the map is considered dead, which is approximately a -500 score.
Two "failed" months in a row means termination of XCom.

Be aware that at the end of the month, every country looks at the score you've generated in their space VS how much the aliens did. You can have a great score 10k points, but utterly fail inside Brazil with -1245 score and they can *eventually* choose to leave XCom.
Simply: Don't go negative score.
>>
Is there a build order or something for XCom 1 on Classic?
Satellite spam seems to cost far too much. What exactly are the losing conditions? Tactically I'm fine. It's just a mixture of running out of money and having two-three countries leave by month two that has me worried
>>
>>148800290
Satellite spam has a very high initial cost but considering it's A) The only way to increase income and B) The only way to get countries to calm the fuck down and stop aliens from doing abduction missions there (And thereby avoiding the loss condition of losing 8 countries), it's pretty much the go-to tactic. Obviously you need to weave other facilities and field equipment into your budget too but getting that 2x2 square of satellite beacons is a top priority.

They scoff at them because they are considerably less threatening then X1 berserkers. Honestly for most pods they should be your last priority. They also do stupid things like attack their own units when enraged.

Aside of my framerate going to shit I've found it's fairly reasonable if tense. Though I waited until I had 6 squaddies to go ABA pods (where it's 4-6 size pods) and then 7-8 squaddies to go Aba pods + (where it's 5 minimum 7 maximum, though I may have seen 8 man squads before).

Legendary though was a bit of a mistake for how long it's taken. I've just got power armor but I haven't gotten plasma yet and I am finding myself losing interest. I liked LW's dynamic campaign being 50% shorter (but I'd say 50% or more longer than vanilla) as a golden setup.

>>148718613

I haven't tested it in the field yet but grab the MEC mods that lets you do proving grounds upgrades to it and the one that lets you equip weapon mods to its weapons. No real excuse for that not being the case in vanilla and it provides an immediate and tangible viability of a spark when you can have +10 or +15 or +20 aim.

I love not created equal, even though I think it's allowed me some really broken setups. I've got 120 aim rangers and shit (100 aim + 20 scope and such) so that I can hit full cover enemies like they are half cover flanked. Also with PCSes.

Turnabout being fair play for legendary's bullshit though.

I can't help but feel like the halo armors on that black bodysuit are a lot lighter in the crotch/stomach area than I figured they'd be. They clearly aren't but I guess I am used to Halo1 and 2 masterchiefs. It might also just be the skintightness of the bodysuit, because the halo reach armors feel nice and beefy despite having the same gaps.

Guaranteed shot's worth of damage on 1 or 2 soldiers that also blows up their cover is exactly why I live in fear of Mutons, who in of themselves typically require two soldiers to shoot down because of their armor. Slap a few of those on top of a giant slab of meat that will charge indiscriminately at your soldiers until you put down the ludicrous amount of firepower required to bring it down and you've got a recipe for disaster. I actually ended up losing two soldiers here because the second Muton/Berserker pod decided to waltz right in right as I activated the first one and all fucking hell broke loose. It took a whole lot of lucky shots to get us through that mission, I'll tell you that much.

PISTOLS ARE USEFUL.

>>148815310

Backspace key will do that if you click the reply window out of focus. My suggestion would be to open the thread up in a completely new tab. That way there's nothing to go back to, and it's impossible for that to happen.

>I don't think it was backspace (though I've definitely done that before too), it was like 'e' or 'r' or something.
It's pretty easy to do - click outside of the reply window, and it's not in focus any more. Then you backspace, and suddenly you're sent back. It seems odd that a random key would do it.

Either way just opening the general in its own separate tab will resolve the issue. Browser can't send you back if there's no previous page for the tab.

/g/ basically expects you to find the answer yourself, and post informed decisions on the matter. From what I've seen they're usually okay about asking for advice, specifically since if they don't like your question they'll usually just completely ignore you. At least I find that better than other boards that sperg out.

I'd offer advice myself if I had any, but I don't. Never bought a gaming laptop, never had any interest. I'd say give /g/ a shot, it can't hurt at least.

...Half out of curiosity and half out of being lazy enough to want to avoid re-downloading EW, I have to wonder whether it would be feasible for someone to beat the entirety of XCOM 2 with only a Pistol-focused Sharpshooter (Obviously you could tell the Avatar self-insert to fuck off and sit in the back of the map on the final mission).

Funnily enough, while Viper binds and lucky Sectoid mindscrambles would instantly lose you the game (Though the latter could at least be countered with a Mindshield), Alien Rulers wouldn't actually be anything more than just an enemy that happens to have a shitload of HP since they'd only be able to do 1 or 2 actions per turn. So, I guess it can be filed under "Unlikely, but technically possible".

Well, I suppose the real question would be "How the fuck are you going to be the 3 Avatars in the final boss room?". Maybe a mematic Reaper-Ranger build with a good ol' Laser Sight and Talon Rounds could do the job, but then your only way to kill multiple enemies per turn will be something on a 5-turn cooldown that gets cockblocked by Mutons.

...Okay, maybe it's not as feasible as I first thought.

...That... didn't take very long at all, I'm afraid, and after an hour of figuring out how to make Julie guaranteed to be my Grenadier on Gatecrasher. Managed to run most of the map without finding any pods, then when I activated a 2 man Trooper/Sectoid pod by dealing 4 damage to the Sectoid another waltzed right in and I was surrounded as I sat around doing nothing for a turn because of a Mindspin that rolled 'Panic'. When I moved to flank the damaged Sectoid I activated the final pod of Trooper/Captain and proceeded to be gunned down without mercy by all 5 of my remaining combatants.

So it's just as I feared, the gimmick early game aliens that otherwise are negligible at best become absolutely game breaking because you only have one soldier to lose, and that's not even considering how impossible an 8 turn timer is to beat when you're shooting 1 shot a turn at your opponents instead of 4. I think I'll just go ahead and re-install EW to do this challenge for myself.

In XCOM1 pistols have infinite ammo and the same accuracy as you're standard rifle. Any soldier can swap to them to kill a low health enemy to conserve enemy.

Assaults using shotguns get a weapon that can be used accurately at range. Snipers without snapshot get a mobile option.

A sniper with gunslinger can deal very good damage with pistols once you finish the foundry projects (about light plasma rifle damage with the plasma tier). Not a bad idea for a sniper with squadsight.

In X2 sharpshooters have excellent action economy (read shooting multiple times). When it comes to removing multiple low health enemies they excel, and since they can almost always shoot twice per turn are a good choice.

They also are excellent for applying dots like poison and burn to debuff multiply enemies and make them less dangerous.

Fan fire gives them the ability to hammer even big targets, and with blue screen rounds they can just about solo sectopods, not too mention other robotic units.

>>
>>148892179
Yeah, I have been trying that mod which adds in more mission variants. I got given a defend heaven mission as a retaliation, where the objective is simply to defend a location for 12 turns and then take out all ADVENT. Without fail, all pods spawn in the same spot and all get activated at the same time, while during the mission, what feels like endless troop ships come in and drop off another pod, and the biggest guy I am facing at this point is the berzerker.
>>
>>148892590
Haven sieges seem to be hit or miss. I did one earlier today where the drop ships were coming in from opposite sides of the maps. Ended up in some kind of no-mans land desperately searching for cover from both sides. Others have been sitting there while reinforcements come in at the same spot and die to overwatch. I think it has to do with how the map gets pieced together.
>>
>>148894184
I have observed that from the few I saw. I had one where it was a total turkey shoot after taking out the initial guys on the map since the drop flares were always in the same spot, so we just all sat there on overwatch.

I do like the new take on extraction and elimination where the skyranger has a delayed return.

Just some general questions about the new LWS content;

1.) Is any of it actually good, in terms of balance or game play?
2.) Is there a laser gun for the SPARK class? If not, is there plans to create one?
3.) Should I hold off on starting a new campaign until the next mod is released, such as the elite alien pack?
>>
>>148895906

The perks seem unbalanced (in you're favor) but are fun

2) Nope, No idea, I'm sure someone is working on it

3) Up to you.

It's good, i wouldn't say the perks are balanced but the lasers are fine.

No, and i don't think there are.

We don't know when that's coming, a few days ago some anon said that in the next couple of weeks but who knows if that's true or not, so it's up to you.

Fuck no, it gets kooky in terms of getting OP as far as the perks are concerned. Rangers and sharpshooters wreck shit.

Only 10 turns in and I've cleared then entire base. All my troops have excellent stamina and most were packing super shotguns, making short work of any enemies in this close quarters combat.

Only two soldiers were even lightly wounded. Despited having rudimentary laser and plasma weapons, the sectoids were just too brittle and un-conditioned by comparison.

A by the books sweep and clear.

Not much that was too valuable to me this late in the game. The biggest items were rocket launchers and good armor (which I can make at this point). Earlier in the game most of the weapons and armor would have been quite a haul. I was more curious then anything to see if it was worth it (Not really).

Is ABA really good? I'm still traumatized because of Long War's complete disregard for balancing so i feel a bit wary about downloading a mod that changes so of the game
>>
>>148915225
Until the LW releases their alien pack, its the most MAGNIFICENT thing we have
>>
>>148915225
ABA's pretty darn good at mixing things up, that's for sure. Make sure you grab it with Pods Plus.

It's tough to balance a mod that throws berserkers and lids at you in normal missions, giving enemies the chance to do an ability on reveal(from smoke grenade to the codex's psi bomb), and making mid-late game reinforcements drop in an entire UFO worth of ayys on you.

But it's damn fucking fun. It beats Vanilla by a mile and I honestly can't find myself ever playing without this mod now, I'm addicted to the variety it provides. It's obviously tougher, especially with Pods+, so do account for those things somehow(I have squad size starting at 6 and up gradable to 8).
>>
>>148916348
>>148916220
Guess i'll try it then.

>(I have squad size starting at 6 and up gradable to 8).
How does one do this?
>>
>>148915225
ABA is pretty good. It doesn't give enemies crazy dodge or insane HP. Gives some armor and shields, mixes up when enemies first show, adds lots of different variants with varying abilities, and AI improvements that are much needed. It is the cornerstone of building a tougher XCOM2. Combo it with Improved AI and better pods plus and then balance it out with other mods to your own personal tastes.
>>
>>148916348
>>148916632
Is Better Pods + literally just Better Pods but harder?
>>
>>148916583
This is what I use for the squad size increase. I heard it was just a simple ini edit but I preferred to have it as a mod for ease of enabling/disabling.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=619922328

Only issue that you'll have is two soldiers T posing during the cutscene(if you have max size) where they rapell down from the skyranger. Works fine otherwise
>>
>>148916749
pretty much just better pods with an extra enemy or two. sometimes more I think, based on what type of pod it is.
>>
>>148916749
Yep! It's exactly the same thing but with the additional pod numbers all being boosted by one.

Pods
>First tier is vanilla squad size with an occasional +1 here and there (Forcelevel 1-5)
>Second tier is global +1 squad size (Forcelevel 6-11)
>Third tier adds the occasional +2 squad size. (Forcelevel 12-17)
>Final tier is a global +2 squad size (Forcelevel 18-20)

Pods+
>First tier is +1 squad size with an occasional +2 here and there (Forcelevel 1-5)
>Second tier is global +2 squad size (Forcelevel 6-11)
>Third tier adds the occasional +3 squad size. (Forcelevel 12-17)
>Final tier is a global +3 squad size (Forcelevel 18-20)

Personally I recommend Pods+ over normal Pods
>>
>>148916632
I'm not sure how well of an idea it is to use a Better AI with ABA. ABA advises not to take other AI mods with it as it modifies the AI itself, and there's going to be conflicts. Example being a Better AI might tell a lancer to keep back and just harass with a regular potshot, while he's equipped with a shotgun and ABA would be telling him to get the fuck in there
>>
>>148917698
I meant Improved AI, ugh

>>148917698
There was a post by the author of ABA that said they were compatible, but there might be some times were they act strangely. I can't remember if it was on a better AI or improved AI's page though. I haven't noticed any strangeness aside from the fact that they tend to set more overwatch traps with improved AI.

@Rex705: Author of A Better ADVENT here. Running ImpAI and my mod together won't produce any hard technical bugs, but since both do extensive edits to AI.ini file, there is bound to be some overlap that might produce unwanted results. FWIW, i apply my new behaviour trees only to my new characters while ImpAI trees would only modify standard enemies, so at least that potentially huge minefield is avoided.
I don't feel like needing ImpAI anymore and removed it recently, but it's your call. You should be fine either way.

There's nothing quite like watching a Sharpshooter use IT'S HIGH NOON to shoot at every single motherfucker on the map, simultaneously finishing off almost-dead aliens that would otherwise be happy to return their pain in kind as well as just getting good damage on everything that still has over half their HP bar left.
