I just read what's the most interesting at the time. I picked this up mainly because the art looked nice and the textbox was unique. Gotta be in the right state of mind to absorb it's brilliance, but the right state of mind never comes. It's like I want to absolve all my own flaws so I can full appreciate whatever the work is. It's kind of like watching a comedy and being afraid of being too sick in the heart/mind to laugh and spoil it. That's why I gravitate towards such works as, ah, Nanairo Reincarnation, Suheisen, Kizuato, stuff people like but aren't praised as kamige. Even though I tend to end up enjoying kamige more than anything, I can't bring myself to read them.

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Still, that doesn't dispel the disappointment. I haven't played an amazing VN in a long time. I really hoped that this one would be better than it was, but sadly, the mediocre story aside, it follows the boring system that the majority of VNs employ.

Prologue > common route > specific character route > epilogue. The prologue and epilogue are fine of course, but the whole common route & heroine route system is very artificial. Instead of interweaving the story, characters, and their relationships together, they dissect them into segments. Why is this method of storytelling so predominantly popular? Ah... Never mind, I think I answered my own question just now. It's because most VNs are kinda like dating simulators. After all, they cater to very specific demographics. The girls themselves are the actual meat of the matter, which is frankly quite disappointing.

For instance...

The common route in Koiken Otome is all about winning the interschool tournament, after which, depending on your choices, you're thrown into a specific heroine route and continue on her own story, completely disregarding all the buildup and achievements from the common route. But why? Instead of time skips between battles, can't they include character scenes and other story important choices in the common route itself, so that by the final battle (obviously it would have been drastically changed) the game would be already approaching it's conclusion? This is not all that difficult to do when I think about it. Simply add a lot more choices to various events and don't lock out heroines until dating is underway, and even then I'd keep a possibility of a break up as an option, just to spice things up. And the fact that everyone seems to be okay with whatever choice the protagonist makes and remains on friendly terms with other characters, especially ex rivals in love, is honestly absurd. 2000/2000

It was pretty great and really felt like a long story that made sense and flowed naturally (albeit going from rougoku to the castle in like a month was a little odd...). The only flaw with this system I really felt in Aiyoku was that heroines didn't really show up past the end of their routes much except for the final route. So each heroine really only has a presence for 3/10th-4/10th of the game, their route and the final route, some in the prologue some not. But, having a single story to play through in one go made that worth it in my opinion, and even though they were pretty dumb plot-wise, it showed you could have heroine routes in a moe-y game and still preserve the main plot well.

I find it hard to believe that they enjoyed some of those titles to SUCH AN EXTENT to devote hundreds, if not thousands of hours into translating them. It baffles my mind. The only reason why someone would do that for free, aside from getting recognition and being altruistic in general, is because they want to share their love for the game and what they experienced with others.
