How can I achieve slow player rotation in unity with a virtual joystick?

This is what I want to achieve: https://youtu.be/WFbOcqvHK6c?t=434 and this http://hastebin.com/otuzoyohud.avrasm is my virtualjoystick script (intended for android/ios touch screens).

The virtualjoystick's movement works perfectly (just not the rotation)

Sadly I still haven't figured out what to replace if (Input.>>>Getkey(Keycode.RightArrow<<<)) with so it works with the virtualjoystick instead of the right/left/up/down arrows.

Honestly this question comes down to what the other game mechanics are.
It's like in monster hunter, you've got the great sword which is slow but deals a lot of damage, it's best used for pure raw damage. While the small fast dual blades are best for applying status effects because status is applied every hit, not based on damage.
It also depends on if enemies get hitstun invulnerability after every hit, or only after a certain threshold, and it depends on what that threshold is.

If you have a bunch of units who would all do the same action (like telling units in an RTS to attack a building) would you have an action class that contains every action a unit can perform or would you give each unit their own methods?

Starting to learn Unity/C#, still completely inept, using this tutorial: http://www.lessmilk.com/tutorial/space-shooter-unity-1

How the fuck does C# handle method declarations?

http://pastebin.com/iYjsypda

I'm getting "The name 'getInputType' does not exist in the current context" and "The name 'shootBullet' does not exist in the current context" errors, so clearly those methods are out of Update()'s scope, so how do I get them there?

Also getting "A namespace cannot directly contain members such as fields or methods" errors.

Anyone want to help me fix these fuck-ups?
>>
>>148352957
Don't worry, senpai, I'll make them look cuter and post pic of them later.
>>
>>148352936
I would have all units have their own action which is inherited from a base unit class. So all I would call is units.attack(target) and all the different units would go do their thing.

I think it's because there are a lot of things like the keys have to be rebindable and there are things that happen when you press a key or when you release a key or that keep happening when you hold down a key and also the input has to affect different things at different occasions. The input events come from the same place the close window events and I have to send them to the right classes

The plan would be to have many different ones, but they would all be pretty short (like 2-3 seconds). One example would be a series of semi-filled tic tac toe games where you have to quickly put your mark to win each game. Stuff like that.

We're gonna do it we're just gotta keep goooing.

I am trying to make the controls more tight. I still can't think of too much variation to game play besides the rock pushing, and bosses though... I kind of want to spice it up a little bit just so people don't feel too bored playing. Someone suggested maybe you could grow and be large but I'm not sure how that would change things.

You can now press charge to shoot forward without input because people said they wanted to try lining it up and I added a spinning animation, that I need to fix but now it's more obvious you're charging and when it ends.

WASD (Vertical and Horizontal axis if you have a controller) and a Charge button (J, but can be set to a joystick button through unity's input layout). I may try to find a way so you can remap this while in the game through options so you can change it there too. not sure if it would recognize a joystick if you did it there though. It looks weird because I think my controller died so I have to use WASD. At the very least it means I play the game with the worst possible controls which might help with handling difficulty.

I generally try to turn everything into functions when possible to make it easier to understand the main control flow of the game/program.

http://pastebin.com/SYHg5FcB

Here's what I ended up with, if anyone's curious. My main issue was that the tutorial only allowed the ship to move in one direction at a time (eg pressing Left and Up would only move you Left).

Current issue I'm grappling with is firing bullets. I'm getting the error

"MissingComponentException: There is no 'Rigidbody2D' attached to the "bullet" game object, but a script is trying to access it.
You probably need to add a Rigidbody2D to the game object "bullet". Or your script needs to check if the component is attached before using it."

Bullet script posted below, I'm not asking for help on this one, but any input would be appreciated.

I wanted to make welds with normals but I can't do it. Tried with some gimp plugin, but it's looking very bad. I guess sculpting would do it, but I can't into it.

Either have it so if you have both pressed, you don't move or have the new key override the old one.

Like if you're doing precision while moving forwards and you press back, most players are either trying to stop their character without thinking about what they're pressing or are trying to move backwards.
Of course this will only be a problem for like 1% of people so just pick a solution and go with it.

Generally I only have the player have a rigidbody with an actual box collider. everything else is a rigidbody with a trigger collider and walls have no rigibodies so they wouldn't ever move.

There's a thing called angular and linear drag. Inceasing their value to something big helps with stopping the object going floaty but you have to accept that unity is a 3D engine trying to do 2D whereas something like xna or godot I think have actual dedicated 2D aspects.

Hello, fellow game-designing Anons.

For the past week I've had a project idea burning in the back of my head, so I decided to try Unity (with the help of a friend).

I made some sprites, loaded them in and started making a script for the playable character.
But after trying to enter Play Mode, the following message popped up:

>All compiler errors have to be fixed before you can enter playmode!

After a little messing around, I found out that creating a script causes this error (doesn't matter if C#Sharp or Java).
Seems like no other Component does this, as I was able to enter Playmode as long as it wasn't a script.

So I was hoping any of you experienced Unity users could help me find a solution for this.

Anyways, here are the things I've tried so far that didn't work:

>Restarting the computer
>Uninstalling/reinstalling Unity
>Manually reinstalling VisualStudio
>Deleting the project and starting over
>Upgrading to Windows 10 (But I also reverted back to 7- Did all of this because of a reoccurring VisualStudio installation error that I kept ignoring that mentioned Windows 10. This error doesn't happen anymore)
>Putting down some seemingly-legitimate code in the script
>Checking if the code really is legitimate with the help of answers to similar problems on the Unity forums (Most notably- [void start] in 4th line; [class name] and [script name] identical)
>My friend and I even compared the code in each's newly-made scripts (Me and him have different computers), and it was identical (He hasn't bumped into any problems himself in Unity yet)

Here's a snip before I drop the demo which should, with the grace of out lord Jesus be completed before the weekend.

Tool: Photoshop
Technique: Photomanipulation/Collage
Motivation: 70%

In this case I took an image from a catalogue of old cabinets. I needed a tool cabinet to do an interactive object which is the last interaction of the demo (or is it). This model in particulas caught my attention as it had those garlands that look like eyes. I want to use lots and lots of pareidolia in this game.

I've remade the left part which was covered and cleaned the objects that were in front of the wardrobe, which left a mark that you can see in the comparison. I could get rid of it and probably should but I liked how more decayed it looks with it.

I also made the 'eyes' a little bit more tense by adding a slight rusty drip texture below them.

Result: I'm satisfied with it. 20 minutes of focused work to do this piece. I feel like I could do better but since it's only a demo that'll do for now.

i made this thing that measures how long you hold down spacebar so i can learn how to transfer information across the network. press spacebar -> timer goes up -> let go -> textmesh gets updated to show the timer. the player prefab for networking is the textmesh itself with the script in the picture attached to it.

can somebody explain to me what i'm doing wrong?

I think most people work on a thing up until they reach a point where they're forced to work on something they don't enjoy.

Some people can't do art so they make some basic stuff with programmer art and then give up when they need to add graphics, some people hate designing stages so they make all the mechanics and then give up on making levels, etc.

Make an integer variable, while that integer is a certain number it will execute a particular function when you press the OK button. Up and down increase and decrease this integer accordingly.

As for the visual, it's just a matter of mapping out where your cursor is going to be. While integer is 1, cursor's location is top of list. While integer is 2, cursor's location is moved to the second spot under it. So on.

That's how I did it.

linking you to lmgtfy was kind of rude, i also apologize about that.

have you tried doing:
if is_undefined(i) { stuff } else { more stuff }
?

but yeah, i'm afraid scripts do not keep variables after they are run, so "i" will never be anything other than 300 anyway.

you don't need to keep your code in scripts though. in fact, putting everything into scripts is bad practice that will slow your game down. you can simply put this code in a parent object's step and alarm events; all child objects will automatically run it as long as you use event_inherited() on a child object's custom step/alarms (otherwise, it will overwrite the parent's).

Thanks for the advice. I guess it didn't click for me that local variables are reset after every step in scripts anyway. Whoops. I suppose I'll think of a way to do this with alarms. Pick an engine, pick a language and go to town.
Are you looking to put out game as soon as possible? Look into Unity.

While your technique is a nice one, if your intended audience is the beginner I feel it's wrong to start with dodge and burn, and more basic stuff like pixel banding and stuff would be more appropriate.

Not to mention, dodge and burn will create a nightmare palette.
>>
>>148377548
That's pretty sweet.
>>
>>148378656
ps1 had no FPU's of any kind, so everything was ints, not sure of the exact precision but basically there were rounding errors all over the place which led to that characteristic shaking of the polygon edges

redbook is simply the CD audio format, lots of games had their soundtrack on the disc as actual CD audio that could be played in any CD player
>>
>>148378970
Yeah, I'm going to make some much more basic videos next.

>Not to mention, dodge and burn will create a nightmare palette.
Colour Balance, man. So good.
If it's still too messy, just desaturate the whole thing (based on luminosity) and then run Colour Balance. Foolproof stuff.

It's situational. Say you prevent 1 damage. Green is worse than red, but better than blue.

If there's a damage floor of 1, then blue immediately rises to the top, because it's not effected by the damage drop, and green is the worst in that situation. If there's a possibility of missing, Blue is the obvious winner, with green at #2. On a miss you lose 50 damage with red, 10 damage with green and 1 damage with blue. With crits doing x2 damage Red wins out.

100% is situational, but green would never be the best, assuming speed means 1 attack per "turn". It's always going to be second best or the worst.

Yay progress finally. Thanks anons who helped me with my retarded questions.
Fixed the KO system. When you unpossess an NPC they'll be knocked out for about 5 seconds atm. Now I need to make it so that happens if you jump from NPC to NPC as well.
Also gonna redo the line of sight system. I currently have the body and head two different objects which is a nightmare to sync up and work with. It's not worth it in the end so they're just gonna be one entity.

can somebody help me understand what it is that i could be doing wrong which leads to client->client not working while host->client and client->host works?

here is the script, really sorry about the messy formatting http://pastebin.com/NGeU9nuE

the "game" is supposed to measure how long you hold down space and then the game is supposed to send that time as well as your unique network id to a list which sortseverything and then displays the various times in order. the list works fine.
the problem is with the automatically spawned player prefab, which is nothing but a textmesh with the above script attached. the textmesh is supposed to display how long you've previously held down space, updating when you let go of the space bar. this is working from host to client and from client to host however, from client to client it does not update at all.

please help, there's also a webm where you can see it for yourself. tyvm

Then try FL/Ableton/etc.

Fl Also has built in templates so you don't even need to arrange stuff yourself. Not sure on Ableton or the rest.

that's just bloody impressive m8
>>

peeeeeersonally I'd recommend stuff like orgmaker. it's pretty limited but exceedingly simple to use.

yesterday i found the first game i ever made, in 2010

had good fun playing and laughing at how shite it is
>>

It's not hard for me to read code /I/ wrote, but hell if I can read and understand anything anyone else writes.
>>
>>148389058
You should re-purpose it for a System Shock like game m8.
>>
>>148388971
In the future you will just use natural language to tell the computer what you want your game to be like and it will generate exactly that.
>>
>>148362514
If it's 2D you can use Kenny's assets, he has shitloads of stuff with a consistent style. He's even started doing some low poly 3D stuff.
http://kenney.nl/assets (You can get about 90% of his stuff free, the bundles include the free stuff with some extras)
>>
>>148389168
Well thats obviously the near-end game. End-game being direct Ghost In The Shell-type stuff.

But I'm talking about /near/ish future.
>>
>>148388236
what makes you think I can write game music when I just posted some shitty synthpop?

but my answer is via imitation and some basic theory, I suggest you leave production for later. pick up a simple tool to learn composition, like orgmaker as >>148388630 suggested, that new site someone posted yesterday (it was actually really cool) or if you feel like staring at spreadsheets, famitracker or modplug

it literally does not matter.
just work on your space game if you want.

This is exactly what Space Jam is for! Make that game, anon. Jams are a perfect way to relearn gamedev. The jam lasts til the end of the month.

>>148389731
Stop trying to ruin the fun, jams are fun and a great way to learn. Just because you don't like jams doesn't mean they're shitty.

OBS for recording.

Webm For Retards for converting to Webm format.

OBS will allow 60 fps capture.
Webmcam is shit.

/agdg/ ones certainly are though.

No they're not. I have over 600 downloads from my /agdg/ jam games alone. And I've learned a lot while participating.

/moebadev/ here. Don't get down fellow dev. Practice and you'll get there! Trust me when I say my old models were shit and barely on point and it took a lot to get where I am, but you can't give up!
